Abstract:
Abstract The concept of holiness has played a significant role in Pentecostal identity. Worship has also been a defining feature of Pentecostalism, and for British Pentecostals, the ultimate locus of worship was historically around the Lord’s Table at the weekly Breaking of Bread service. Here at the Table holiness and worship met in the presence of the Lord, and in that meeting of the two the Gifts of the Spirit flowed, healing was found at the Table, and the Spirit-filled gathered congregation were sent back out into the world, renewed and refreshed as witnesses of the living Lord. While the Breaking of Bread could involve either intense joy or tears of repentance, it constantly bore witness to the seriousness with which Pentecostals took the holiness of God and His sanctification of His people. This article draws on historic British Pentecostal Eucharistic worship in working towards a Pentecostal theological account of holiness.

Abstract:
The aim of this article is to describe the nosographical contribution of the Italian psychiatrist Sante De Sanctis (1862–1935) to early twentieth-century child psychiatry. De Sanctis first proposed the category of ‘dementia praecocissima’ in 1906, and it was recognized by Kraepelin. Dementia praecocissima has its roots in a theoretical and methodological conception of mental disorder based on ‘psycho-physical proportionalism’ and the ‘law of circle’. This article deals with De Sanctis’s model, which has so far been neglected by historiographers; it shows the pioneering role that this Italian psychiatrist played in child psychiatry in Italy.

Rodney Aist (Course Director, St. George’s College, Jerusalem) has written an insightful book about Jerusalem pilgrim texts with a focus on three interrelated texts in the genre: Eucherius’s Letter to Faustus, Adomnán’s De locis sanctis (Adls), and Bede’s De locis sanctis (Bdls). All three pilgrim texts were written at a distance from Jerusalem itself. The writers synthesized their works from secondary sources in their home countries of France, Ireland (Iona), and England (Wearmouth and Jarrow, Northumbria) respectively. The parameters of Aist’s study are clearly set forth in the introduction:

Abstract:
The article makes a brief exposition of the context of the first persecutions against the Christians, particularly highlighting the persecution of Diocletian, to later analyze the effects of the Constantinian peace. The importance that within the context of the Constantinian peace acquired the cult of martyrs, like the first Christian heroes, is exposed. Later the importance of the literature about martyrs of the first centuries is revealed. In a second part of the article, the sermons that Saint Augustine dedicated to Saint Vincent are studied, namely, sermons 4; 274-277 / A; 359 / B. A detailed study is made of each one of them, both at the rhetorical level and mainly in terms of content, to highlight the ideas and Augustine’s theology. The role that the sermons of Saint Augustine played in the transmission of the Passio Vincentii is particularly stressed.

Full text
Abstract:
The article deals with the problem of creativity and scientific heritage of Niccolò Machiavelli in the system of historiographic assessments by Francesco De Sanctis (1817-1883). The author states the importance of addressing this issue in the era of globalization, since the era of the Italian Renaissance reflected cardinal changes in the interpretation of the historical process. In addition, in the era of globalization, the question of the system for forming the stages of historiographic assessments of Machiavelli's scientific heritage has significant methodological potential. Of particular interest in this regard is the Italian historiography of the 19th century, which developed under the influence of the emergence of a single centralized Italian state. What the Italians failed in the 16th century, what Machiavelli dreamed about in the final chapter of The Prince, became a historical fact in 1861. Of course, before the Italian historiography, a natural question arose about the creation of a holistic picture of Italian social and political life, within which the name of Machiavelli was to occupy a significant place. Thus, after Italy gained its statehood in the 19th century, representatives of Italian historiography faced the task of determining the true place of the entire scientific heritage of Machiavelli within the framework of Italian historical development. This task was brilliantly solved in the framework of the «History of Italian Literature» by Francesco De Sanctis (1817-1883).Consideration of the problems of creativity and scientific heritage of Machiavelli in the system of historiographic assessments by Francesco De Sanctis allows us to state the deep theoretical and methodological significance of these assessments. In de Sanctis' assessments of Machiavelli's heritage, not only a dry academic approach prevails, but also the desire to tie these assessments to De Sanctis' contemporary Italian political life of the 19th century. The scientific heritage and work of Machiavelli is considered by Francesco De Sanctis as a kind of lesson for the present. Machiavelli, who relies on realism and yet pays tribute to Fortune, is regarded as precisely a modern author. The assessments of the outstanding Italian scholar expressed in the second volume of the «History of Italian Literature» laid the foundation for a significant part of the modern interpretation of Machiavelli. In the era of globalization, the appeal to the key aspects of the formation of assessments of creativity and scientific heritage of Machiavelli within the framework of Italian historiography of the 19th century is of considerable interest. Thus, the views of Machiavelli were formed in a complex and rich atmosphere of the decline of the political influence of Italy, which became a fact after the military events of 1494. This allows us, in turn, referring to the heritage of the Florentine thinker, to see the content of his concepts in the light of the challenges of the era of globalization and the formation of a new world order.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Perhaps our most learned and knowledgeable informant concerning both the heretics and their persecutors is the great inquisitor, hagiographer and Dominican historian Bernard Gui (1261–1331), who has been immortalized as the personification of evil by Umberto Eco inThe Name of the Rose. In his manual for inquisitors, Gui issued the following caveat concerning the conduct of inquiries into heresy:It is worthwhile noting that if too many questions and answers are raised, the truth is distorted and destroyed as a result of the diversity of persons and events. Rather, it is suitable not to write down all the questions and answers, but only those which touch directly on the substance and character of the event and which more closely appear to express the truth. If in one deposition too many questions and answers are found, another deposition will appear thereby diminished since too little is recorded. When so many questions and answers are written down in a trial, agreement can scarcely be found in the depositions of the witnesses, which should be both considered and avoided.

Abstract:
This essay seeks to reconnect two intellectual events of major import in nineteenth-century France: Jules Michelet’s “rediscovery” of Giambattista Vico as a viable source for a critical review of modernity’s task and the scholarly, artistic, and moral accreditation of commedia dell’arte, something inaugurated by George and Maurice Sand in their landmark Masques at bouffons (1860). Together, I contend, these scholarly events mark turning points in the romantic revision of the Renaissance, Baroque, and Enlightenment legacies. In the first section of this essay, I examine Michelet’s Vichian obsession, itself so often studied in isolation, to account for its hybridization with a specific brand of Italian Vichianism imported to France by Italian Risorgimento expatriates. As I explore in the second part of the essay, this connection informs the Sands’ recuperation of commedia dell’arte, another important part of Italy’s early modern legacy, as itself a Vichian event mediated by Michelet’s historiography. In conclusion, this rapprochement will allow us to elucidate a larger reciprocation between French and Italian thinkers at the same time that Italians were reckoning with the legacy of the Risorgimento, as we see through the eyes of one of its major proponents, Francesco De Sanctis, who in his influential History of Italian literature (1870–1) reappropriated Vico to argue that the rebirth of Italy may depend on the obliteration of both its Renaissance and comic traditions.

Abstract:
Several genetic disorders caused by defective nucleotide excision repair that affect the skin and the nervous system have been described, including Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP), De Sanctis–Cacchione syndrome (DSC), Cockayne syndrome, and Trichothiodystrophy. Cutaneous photosensitivity with an increased risk of skin malignancy is a common feature of these disorders, but clinical manifestations commonly overlap these syndromes. Several genes have been found to be altered in these pathologies, but we lack more genotype-phenotype correlations in order to make an accurate diagnosis. Very few cases of DSC syndrome have been reported in the literature. We present a case of a 12-year-old Colombian male, with multiple skin lesions in sun-exposed areas from the age of 3 months and a history of 15 skin cancers. He also displayed severe neurologic abnormalities (intellectual disability, ataxia, altered speech, and hyperreflexia), short stature, and microcephaly, which are features associated with DSC. Genetic testing revealed a novel germline mutation in the XP-C gene (c.547A>T). This is the first case of an XP-C mutation causing De Sanctis–Cacchione syndrome. Multigene panel testing is becoming more widely available and accessible in the clinical setting and will help rapidly unveil the molecular etiology of these rare genetic disorders.

Abstract:
Jerusalem – a holy city in medieval guidebooks for pilgrims A literary genre, typical for the high and late Middle Ages, connected with pilgrimages to the Holy Land, were lists of holy places. The tradition of making such brief, impersonal, and often anonymous catalogues of places worth visiting dates from the 12th century. Such registers were prepared for people guiding pilgrims or even pilgrims themselves who travelled from Europe to the East. That is why, the literature tends to treat works of that type as “guidebooks”. Comparison of three medieval guidebooks i.e. Descriptio de locis sanctis by Rorgo Fretellus (ca. 1137), and two anonymous textes: Les sains pelerinages que l’en doit reqquerre el la Terre Sainte (ca. 1229–1239) and Peregrinationes totius Terrae Sanctae (1491) allows us to analyse changes of pilgrims’ needs and expectations. Creation and collapse of crusaders’ states, as well as development of Ayyubid and Mamluk empires changed political situation in the Holy Land and had a serious impact on pilgrimage movement. Forced modification of pilgrims’ routes took place during decades of important changes of piety of Latin Christians, so pilgrims needed updated guidebooks.

Abstract:
The article deals with the prayer of Jesus in Gethsemane, as presented by St. Augustine in the Enarrationes in Psalmos and in the Sermones de sanctis. An exegetical introduction of the New Testament texts of the prayer of Jesus in Gethsemane is offered, as well as the pre-Augustinian patristic tradition, highlighting the various points that Augustine’s previous Fathers of the Church underlined in the Prayer of Jesus in Gethsemane. It later discusses Augustine’s Texts where He addresses this topic, highlighting particularly the ecclesiological interpretation of the Bishop of Hippo.
