Abstract:
What does it mean to be a ‘shaman’ in present-day Tokyo today? In what way(s) is the role of the shamanic practitioner represented at a popular level? Are certain characteristics emphasised and others downplayed? This book offers an answer to these questions through the analysis of a specific discourse on shamans that emerged in the Japanese metropolitan context between the late 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century, a discourse that the more ‘traditional’ approaches to the study on shamanism do not take into account. In order to better contextualise this specific discourse, the volume opens with a brief historical account of the formation of the academic discourse on shamans. Within the theoretical framework offered by critical discourse analysis and by means of multi-sited ethnographic research, it then weaves together different case studies: three novels by Taguchi Randy, a manga, a TV series and the case of an urban shaman who is mostly active in Tokyo. The main elements emerging from these case studies are explored by situating them in the precise historical and social context within which the discourse has been developed. This shows that the new discourse analysed shares several characteristics with the more ‘traditional’ and accepted discourses on shamanism, while at the same time differing in certain respects. In this work, particular attention is given to how the category and term ‘shaman’ is defined, used and re-negotiated in the Japanese metropolitan context. Through this approach, the book aims to further problematize the categories of ‘shaman’ and ‘shamanism’, by highlighting certain aspects that are not yet accepted by many scholars, even though they constitute a discourse that is relevant and effective.

Youngstrom, Eric, and Anna Van Meter. Comorbidity of Bipolar Disorder and Depression. Edited by C. Steven Richards and Michael W. O'Hara. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199797004.013.003.

Abstract:
There has been speculation about the relationship between depression and mania for centuries. Modern psychiatry and psychology have mostly viewed these as different subtypes within a “family” of mood disorders. Conceptual models of comorbidity provide an opportunity to re-examine the association between depression and other pathological mood states. We examine the evidence pertaining to rates of “comorbidity,” which, in this case, refer to the lifetime occurrence of depression and hypomanic, mixed, or manic episodes in the same individual. We explore factors that could contribute to artifactual comorbidity. We also examine data pertaining to similarities or differences in phenomenology, longitudinal course, associated features, family history, and treatment response. Multiple factors are likely involved in the comorbidity of depression and hypomania or mania, and the problems of poor reliability and inconsistent diagnostic definitions and methodology attenuate the significance of most research findings. However, evidence appears sufficient to conclude that not all depression is on the bipolar spectrum, that bipolar features moderate the course and outcome of depressive illness, and that depression and bipolar disorder most likely involve a blend of some shared and some specific mechanisms. Research and clinical work both will advance substantially by more systematically assessing for potential bipolar features “comorbid” with depression and following how these factors change the trajectory of depression over time.

Matthews, Samantha. Album Verses and Romantic Literary Culture. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198857945.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
‘Will you write in my album?’ Many Romantic poets were asked this question by women who collected contributions in their manuscript books. Those who obliged included Byron, Scott, Wordsworth, and Lamb, but also Felicia Hemans, Amelia Opie, and Sara Coleridge. Album Verses and Romantic Literary Culture presents the first critical and cultural history of this forgotten phenomenon. It asks a series of questions. Where did 1820s ‘albo-mania’ come from, and why was it satirized as a women’s ‘mania’? What was the relation between visitors’ books associated with great institutions and country houses, personal albums belonging to individuals, and the poetry written in both? What caused albums’ re-gendering from earlier friendship books kept by male students and gentlemen on the Grand Tour to a ‘feminized’ practice identified mainly with young women? When albums were central to women’s culture, why were so many published album poems by men? How did amateur and professional poets engage differently with albums? What does album culture’s privileging of ‘original poetry’ have to say about attitudes towards creativity, poetic practice, and the print marketplace? Album Verses recovers a distinctive subgenre of occasional poetry composed to be read in manuscript, with its own characteristic formal features, conventions, themes, and cultural significance. Unique albums examined include that kept at the Grande Chartreuse, those owned by Regency socialite Lady Sarah Jersey, and those kept by the Lake poets’ daughters. Album Verses and Romantic Literary Culture shows that album poetry reflects changing attitudes to identity, gender, class, politics, poetry, family dynamics, and social relations between 1780 and 1850.

Abstract:
This book has addressed the paradox of rights: the tension between the need for human rights law to document and prosecute violations and the inability of the human rights framework to address the full scope of harm. Since the roots of transitional justice grow out of international human rights law, this same paradox is manifested in transitional justice mechanisms, such as the Peruvian Truth and Reconciliation Committee (PTRC). The story of Rosa Cuchillo and her endless search for her daughter, who disappeared during the armed conflict, highlights the endurance of love, the importance of legal avenues to register human rights violations, and the central role played by human rights advocates. This conclusion discusses the structural, procedural, and methodological implications of the book's analysis of Peruvian feminist and human rights movements, the PTRC, and DEMUS's Manta project in terms of future transitional justice endeavors both within and outside of Peru.

Abstract:
The German historian of medicine J. F. C. Hecker’s landmark essay ‘The Dancing Mania’ appeared in a definitive English edition at the same time as Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species (1859), a moment when fascination with antiquity was controversially at the forefront of modern science. Translations brought exotic literature into the mix, catapulting scenes of dancing into the purview of medical research. Attention to the genealogy or, after Diana Taylor and Michel Foucault, the scenes or scenarios, the archival repertoire, of choreomania’s discursive emergence, including the vicissitudes of writers’ institutional affiliations, new translations, a fashion for collecting, and practices of collage and montage, shows that sciences in the nineteenth century were more fluid than is often allowed. Cast as an ancient convulsive epidemic, ‘choreomania’ was articulated between the ‘two cultures’, science and literary art, as a medical curiosity and an archival find. Choreomania’s discursive history is thus found in the unlikeliest places: the medical anecdote, the footnote, the aside.

Full text
Abstract:
The spatial turn in the humanities has fuelled new ways of thinking about landscape as a lived environment which is radically affected by human hands and human minds, and which radically affects human experience. At the same time, scholars of Greek myth have become more sensitive to the contextual dynamics which animate the mythic tradition, having come to see storytelling as an activity which is both precisely situated in, and contingent on, its environment. This volume, which derives in part from the series of Bristol International Myth Conferences, brings together 15 chapters on the spatiality of Greek myth and its interrelationships with the landscapes of the Mediterranean. It displays the myriad ways in which Greek storytelling shaped, and was shaped by, its environment. The chapters display diverse approaches and introduce a wide range of material, taking in Greek poetic, geographical, mythographical, and historiographical texts, and archaeological and visual sources. Chronologically, they cover the full scope of Greek antiquity from the archaic period to the imperial period; geographically, they incorporate discussions of landscapes in mainland Greece, Magna Graecia, and Asia Minor.

Adelaar, Willem F. H. Imperatives and commands in Quechua. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198803225.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
The Quechuan languages of the Central Andes have a dedicated Imperative Mood paradigm featuring personal reference marking for all subject endings except first person. Non-canonical third person subject forms are part of this paradigm. Although there is a formal overlap between Future Tense and Imperative in marking of the first person inclusive subject, the former can be used in questions or be accompanied by validation markers, whereas the latter cannot. In imperative constructions negation is indicated in the same way as in other moods, except that it requires the presence of the prohibitive adverb ama, instead of plain negative mana. Conversely, ama can also be used in non-Imperative environments to express a mild or indirect command. It can be argued that Quechuan languages have two competing ways of indicating prohibition: Imperative structures with regular negation marking and obligatory presence of ama, and non-Imperative structures where ama introduces a prohibitive connotation.

Abstract:
Petani sering dikaitkan dengan aktiviti pertanian dan kemiskinan.Namun adakah petani hanya melakukan aktiviti pertanian sahaja?

Santiago Iglesias, José Andrés, and Ana Soler Baena, eds. Anime Studies: Media-Specific Approaches to Neon Genesis Evangelion. Stockholm University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.16993/bbp.

Full text
Abstract:
Anime Studies: Media-Specific Approaches to Neon Genesis Evangelion aims at advancing the study of anime, understood as largely TV-based genre fiction rendered in cel, or cel-look, animation with a strong affinity to participatory cultures and media convergence. Taking Neon Genesis Evangelion (Shin Seiki Evangerion) as a case study, this volume acknowledges anime as a media form with clearly recognizable aesthetic properties, (sub)cultural affordances and situated discourses. First broadcast in Japan in 1995-96, Neon Genesis Evangelion became an epoch-making anime, and later franchise. The initial series used already available conventions, visual resources and narrative tropes typical of anime in general and the mecha (or giant-robot) genre in particular, but at the same time it subverted and reinterpreted them in a highly innovative and as such standard-setting way. Investigating anime through Neon Genesis Evangelion this volume takes a broadly understood media-aesthetic and media-cultural perspective, which pertains to medium in the narrow sense of technology, techniques, materials, and semiotics, but also mediality and mediations related to practices and institutions of production, circulation, and consumption. In no way intended to be exhaustive, this volume attests to the emergence of anime studies as a field in its own right, including but not prioritizing expertise in film studies and Japanese studies, and with due regard to the most widely shared critical publications in Japanese and English language. Thus, the volume provides an introduction to studies of anime, a field that necessarily interrelates media-specific and transmedial aspects. In Anime Studies: Media-Specific Approaches to Neon Genesis Evangelion, anime is addressed from a transnational and transdisciplinary stance. The disciplinary and methodological perspectives taken by the individual chapters range from audio-visual culture, narratology, performance and genre theory to fandom studies and gender studies. In its first part, the book focuses on textual analysis and media form in the narrow sense with regard to filmic media, bank footage, voice acting and musical score, and then it broadens the scope to consider subcultural discourse, franchising, manga and video game adaptations, as well as critical and affective user engagement.

Coss, Peter. The Aristocracy in England and Tuscany, 1000 - 1250. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198846963.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Part I of this book is an in-depth examination of the characteristics of the Tuscan aristocracy across the first two and a half centuries of the second millennium, as studied by Italian historians and others working within the Italian tradition: their origins, interests, strategies for survival and exercise of power; the structure and the several levels of aristocracy and how these interrelated; the internal dynamics and perceptions that governed aristocratic life; and the relationship to non-aristocratic sectors of society. It will look at how aristocratic society changed across this period and how far changes were internally generated as opposed to responses from external stimuli. The relationship between the aristocracy and public authority will also be examined. Part II of the book deals with England. The aim here is not a comparative study but to bring insights drawn from Tuscan history and Tuscan historiography into play in understanding the evolution of English society from around the year 1000 to around 1250. This part of the book draws on the breadth of English historiography but is also guided by the Italian experience. The book challenges the interpretative framework within which much English history of this period tends to be written—that is to say the grand narrative which revolves around Magna Carta and English exceptionalism—and seeks to avoid dangers of teleology, of idealism, and of essentialism. By offering a study of the aristocracy across a wide time-frame and with themes drawn from Italian historiography, I hope to obviate these tendencies and to appreciate the aristocracy firmly within its own contexts.
