Abstract:
The article examines the historical and modern interpretation of the Japanese code of "Bushido", "The Way of the warrior", as the basic principles of morality and rules of conduct of warriors in life and society since about the X century. The penetration of the foundations of "Bushido" into the broad strata of society with the advent of the Edo era (1603-1867), gave it the character of national morality and equated it with the state ideology. An assessment is given of the transformation of the principles of "Bushido" into "Heimindo", "The Way of the commoner", in the XX century, an attempt to "elevate commoners to the status of samurai", preserving the ideals of loyalty, benevolence and justice in society. The preservation of the principles of "Bushido" in the Japanese national culture in the era of globalization is substantiated.

Abstract:
Though difficult to define as a clear set of moral precepts, aspects of so-called “samurai values”, the combination of orally-transmitted Confucian and Buddhist lore to which Nitobe Inazō refers in his Bushido, can clearly be discerned in Japanese society today. As evidence for the influence of “samurai values”, I have provided examples from two fields with which I am personally familiar: journalism and education. Although in recent years several academic works have exposed historical anomalies in widely-held beliefs about actual samurai behaviour, I argue that the effectiveness of ideologies does not depend on historical accuracy. For example, justification for the right of newspapers to criticise governments in Japan does not stem from inalienable rights originating with European Enlightenment philosophers. Instead, it is linked to the view that the former samurai who in the 1870s became Japan’s first news reporters could be trusted intermediaries between the government and the people, because as samurai they possessed higher standards of morality. That expectations of superior moral conduct continue to justify in the eyes of the general public the right of newspapers to speak truth to power can be seen by mass cancellations of subscriptions of newspapers whose staff betray these expectations through involvement in scandal. Likewise, the emphasis on “character building” (jinkaku keisei) in Japanese higher education is another link to perceived “samurai values.” Some of Japan’s leading private universities were founded in the late nineteenth century by former samurai. As in the case of journalism, the maintenance of superior moral conduct helps strengthen the claim to legitimacy of educational institutions in Japan. Finally, I will present a picture of Nitobe as an example of a former samurai who long after his passing continues to be revered for having adhered to the “samurai values” he both defined and embraced.

Abstract:
This research focuses on ethnocentrism in Edward Zwick’s The Last Samurai. It is intended to identify how ethnocentrism is depicted and reflected in the life of samurai in the movie The Last Samurai. The ethnocentrism theory by William G. Sumner will be used to analyze the movie. The data were obtained by watching the film, reading the movie script and cinematographic elements, identifying data based on the topic of study, and categorizing the data with respect to the theoretical framework. Based on the analysis, the findings show that there are three aspects of ethnocentrism; first, loyal to in-group norms; second, express in-group pride; third, judge and underestimate the out-group. These three features of ethnocentrism create a deep perception in their dominant culture to others.

Abstract:
Bushido as a moral teaching contains the principles of virtue to form the soul of a knight. A typical Japanese knight is a Samurai. The moral teaching is inherited verbally from generation to generation until now. Japanese people practice these teachings seriously into everyday life. They live every principle with full sincerity, honesty, and wholeheartedly to form a patriotic soul. The principles of teaching are formulated in writing into seven principles that are inseparable from one another. Because every principle underlies and animates other principles. A Samurai cannot abandon one principle of teaching because if he abandons one principle the quality of a samurai will disappear so that he does not have a patriotic soul. Therefore, Bushido is able to form a patriot who is always superior.

Abstract:
The path followed by Protestant Christianity in Meiji Japan (1868–1912) has frequently been viewed as an index to the general process of Japanese development up to World War II. The beginnings seemed promising. According to the accepted picture, the early converts included a significant number of young ex-samurai whose clan had not supported the winning side in the Meiji Restoration. The new regime dismantled the feudal order which had given their lives purpose and meaning, and they felt alienated and rejected as a result. They first came into contact with Christianity from a desire to study Western learning and thus make a new start in life; they were indifferent, or even hostile, to the Western religion itself. The early missionaries and foreign teachers who led them to Christianity in spite of such initial attitudes seem to have been, if not men with actual military experience, people of strong personality and puritanical ideals. Matching samurai stereotypes of courage and single-minded determination as they therefore did, they attracted the admiration and loyalty of their lordless pupils, who pledged themselves, through their teachers, to Christ. Conversion was often accompanied by the discovery of a new purpose in life, the task of spreading the new religion. This was a restatement of the samurai obligation to set a spiritual example to others, and also represented a patriotic mission to save the nation both morally and materially, through providing the proper basis for the adoption of Western civilization.

Craig M. Cameron of the History Department of Old Dominion University has written an interesting, readable, well-researched examination of the First Marine Division during the Second World War, the occupation of northern China, and the Korean War. As a former Marine himself, Cameron brings a unique insight into this study of "the myth and imagination" displayed by the members of the First Marine Division. Indeed, Cameron sees some close similarities between the Japanese samurai and their Marine counterparts. His book explores how a variety of institutional and cultural ideas influenced and continues to influence the Marine Corps.

Abstract:
The following is an exploration of the use of epideictic rhetoric strategies in nineteenth-century conduct manuals, Sarah Stickney Ellis’s The Women of England: Their Social Duties and Domestic Habits, and Harriet Martineau’s Household Education. In examining the rhetoric of the conduct manuals, this researcher has identified the audience, the rhetorical situation, the exigence of that situation, and the use of phronisis, areti, and euonia by both authors. Because the rhetoric of the conduct manual has not been discussed in current critical perspectives, this research is a starting point for further study. The different types of rhetorical strategies used by each author are the focal points used to uncover how epideictic rhetoric can be understood beyond the restrictions of funeral orations and ceremonial speeches. The primary critical research used in this project has been that focused on epideictic rhetoric and the conduct manuals themselves.

Williams, Corrie. "The Interplay of Prosocial and Conduct Problem Behaviour: Implications for Developmental and Life-Course Criminology." Thesis, Griffith University, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/402730.

Abstract:
This thesis explored prosocial behaviour from a developmental and life-course perspective. In doing so, I fill two gaps in understanding in the role of prosocial behaviour in the deceleration of conduct problem behaviour. First, I explore how a developmental and life-course understanding of prosocial behaviour may shed light on whether prosocial behaviour is a facilitator or measurable outcome of the deceleration of conduct problem behaviour. Second, I explore how the social support perceptions of adolescents are related to their prosocial and conduct problem behaviour. Addressing a gap in knowledge on whether prosocial and conduct problem behaviour are driven by the same underlying factors. Ultimately, this thesis answers the overarching question––why should developmental and life course criminologists explore prosocial behaviour? I explored this question through three studies that provide insight into the interplay of prosocial and conduct problem behaviour. The data for each of the three studies in my thesis were from the scales and sub-scales that form a part of the Growing Up in Australia: The Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC) questionnaires (N= 4969; Female: 2447; Males: 2536). The participants were aged four to fifteen. In study one, I explored the implications of different analytic approaches to empirically examining prosocial behaviour within a developmental and life-course criminology perspective. To meet the aim of this research a group based-trajectory model and a growth curve model of prosocial behaviour were estimated and compared. I examined the development of prosocial behaviour, by applying the two conventional approaches to empirically studying the development of antisocial behaviour. The findings of this research provide insight into where investigations of prosocial behaviour may conceptually fit within the developmental and lifecourse perspective. Also allowing for a deeper assessment of how different analytic approaches impact on the developmental and life-course understanding of prosocial behaviour development. The results of study one indicated, that for this sample of children and adolescents, the developmental trajectory of prosocial behaviour (from age 4 – 15 years), may best be described as a single trajectory with variations around this trajectory. Conceptually, this positions prosocial behaviour development outside the realm of categorical explanations of behavioural development. The results did indicate that the development of prosocial behaviour is relatively stable with many children and adolescents maintaining their rank-ordering. Moreover, there was also evidence for more than three distinguishable trajectories of prosocial behaviour. Most of these trajectories, however, did not vary in shape and there was an absence of a distinct group of children and adolescents who were very low in prosocial behaviour. Thus, these findings suggest that the development of prosocial behaviour is a complex process that may not be captured taxonomically. In this sense the findings support the notion that there is a link between age-graded factors, such as socio-cognitive maturity, and prosocial behaviour, but that these associated factors drive variation around a single, normative developmental pattern of prosocial behaviour. In study two, I expanded on the findings in study one by exploring how changes in prosocial behaviour and conduct problems are causally related over time. These investigations contribute to developmental and life-course criminology theory, an understanding of the role of prosocial behaviour in the deceleration of conduct problem behaviour. Many studies have explored the relationship between prosocial behaviour and conduct problems, however, very few studies, consider the longitudinal and causal direction of this relationship. Without a thorough understanding of the longitudinal and causal relationship between prosocial behaviour and conduct problems, it cannot be assumed that interventions that aim to foster prosocial behaviour will also decrease conduct problems. The aims of study two were met by exploring a generalised cross-lagged panel model. This approach controls for fixed and occasion effects to allow for examination of short-term and long-term bi-directional patterns of change. The results indicated that whilst prosocial and conduct problems have a moderate amount of shared variance, there were differences in the bidirectional relationships of these behaviours. Specifically, there were only cumulative, longterm effects of prosocial behaviour change on conduct problems. These findings revealed no short-term predictive effect of conduct problems in one time period on prosocial behaviour in the next time period. There was, however, a short-term predictive relationship of prosocial behaviour in one time period on conduct problems in the next period. Specifically, higher prosocial behaviour in one time period predicted lower conduct problem behaviour in the next period. Despite the lack of a short-term predictive effect of conduct problems on prosocial behaviour, cumulative changes in conduct problems, were strong enough to influence reductions in prosocial behaviour over time. This pattern also held for the long-term impact of prosocial behaviour on conduct problems. These findings suggest that although conduct problems may have a cumulative negative impact on prosocial behaviour, the strength of the short and longterm influence of prosocial behaviour on conduct problem behaviour may be enough to overcome this long-term impact. The first two studies in my thesis revealed important insights into the general development of prosocial behaviour and how prosocial behaviour may influence and be influenced by conduct problems. In study three, I explored how the social support perceptions of early adolescents relate to both prosocial and conduct problem behavioural outcomes. These investigations are important as previous research provides some evidence to suggest that social support may be leveraged for strength-based interventions that both increase prosocial behaviour and decrease conduct problem behaviour. Other findings also indicate, however, that relative to adolescents who engage in prosocial behaviour, social support interventions may not be successful for adolescents who also engage in conduct problem behaviour, as they are less likely to perceive social support in their important contexts. To meet the aims of study three, I explored a multivariate multiple regression to account for any covariation between prosocial behaviour and conduct problems and provide a comparison of how the social support perceptions of early adolescents may differently predict their prosocial and conduct problem behaviour. The findings of these explorations, indicated that adolescents’ perceptions of social support from their mothers predicted conduct problems and prosocial behaviour, as did perceived support within the school environment. There was no significant association between adolescents’ perceptions of peer social support and either their prosocial or conduct problem behaviour. Adolescents’ perceptions of peer social support, however, did moderate the relationship between adolescents’ perceptions of social support from caring adults in their school and their prosocial behaviour. Adolescents who perceived high levels of support from caring adults in their school environment also reported low levels of peer support, but this corresponded to high levels of prosocial behaviour. Overall, I contribute to a developmental and life-course criminology understanding of the interplay of prosocial behaviour and conduct problems. I found that there was variability in the development of prosocial behaviour over time. This variability may be captured by a theoretical framework, such as Loeber’s developmental pathways theory, that explores the sequencing of the behaviour of children and adolescents. My finding that prosocial behaviour may facilitate the deceleration of conduct problem behaviour also provides empirical evidence for Loeber’s development pathways theory. Further, my results have practical implications, expanding on the existing evidence that guides strength-based developmental crime prevention approaches. The strengthening of social support provided to adolescents by their mothers and caring adults in the school environment may foster the deceleration of conduct problem behaviour. Future research should focus on extending the understanding of how prosocial behaviour may relate to specific types of conduct problem behaviour and other factors that may both increase prosocial behaviour and decrease conduct problem behaviour (e.g., personality). Developmental and life-course criminologists already have a comprehensive framework for understanding the development of conduct problem behaviour. My thesis contributes an understanding prosocial behaviour from this perspective. Thus, not only should developmental and life-course criminologists explore prosocial behaviour, they are well placed to do so.

Abstract:
Abstract: This article describes how the life and works of Boris Pasternak were strongly connected with music. Pasternak began his artistic career as a musician, namely a pianist and student of composition. His interest in music was contributed by his acquaintance with the composer Alexander Scriabin, who made a strong impression on the young Pasternak and inspired him to music. Pasternak devoted several chapters to Scriabin in his short prose Safe Conduct and Essay in Autobiography. A few years later, when Pasternak gave up music, his sense of the musicality of the verse remained in his poetry. Even in his prose work, we can find several passages that mention music or musicians. Pasternak uses musical examples to describe the outer and inner world of his literary heroes. This article focuses on Pasternak's prose work, especially on the novel Doctor Zhivago and the autobiographical works Safe Conduct and Essay in Autobiography, but also gives a very few examples from his rich poetry. Keywords: Boris Pasternak, Doctor Zhivago, Scriabin, Musicality of the verse

Abstract:
A major portion of the Life Cycle Cost (LCC) of a modern high technology weapon system is determined by design decisions made very early in the development process. Many of these decisions affect the design so fundamentally that later changes become impractical. Although a computerized weapon system LCC methodology has been developed at Pratt & Whitney to evaluate engine trades, its complexity limits its usefulness during preliminary design when the largest number of decisions must be made. This paper describes a technique used to provide a simplified version of this methodology to design engineers to conduct configuration/cost/performance trades. By supplying the designer with a simple, effective evaluation tool, LCC becomes an integral part of the design system from the beginning.

Abstract:
The paper presents the results of a probabilistic creep life study on F5001P turbine discs and demonstrates the importance of using physics based probabilistic damage modeling techniques to deal with life prediction uncertainty in forged components. In physics based modeling, the influence of individual microstructural or thermal-mechanical loading factors on metallurgical crack initiation can also be studied with relative ease. In a previous study, Life Prediction Technologies Inc.’s (LPTi’s) prognosis tool known as XactLIFE™ was successfully used to conduct deterministic analysis to establish the fracture critical location of F5001P first stage discs under steady state loads. In this paper, the variability in life is further established as a function of prior austenite grain size. The analysis used typical engine operating data from the field in terms of engine speed and average exhaust gas temperature (EGT). The primary objectives of the case study are to show how prognosis can allow a user to assess fleet reliability for engine specific operating conditions. The lower bound deterministic creep life and probabilistic creep life at 0.1% cumulative probability of failure are very close in magnitude.

Abstract:
A large number of facilities and parts of the infrastructure on the Norwegian Continental Shelf are approaching or have exceeded their original design life. Many fields, however, have remaining recoverable oil and gas reserves which may be profitable if the field’s life is extended. From a safety point of view, the condition of systems, structures and components may not be acceptable for extended operation. Ageing and life extension have been a top priority for the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA) and PSA has asked SINTEF to conduct a study of various aspects of ageing and life extension. The paper presents main results from the study, including how to document the safety of an ageing facility and how to uphold the safety level by means of a maintenance programme balancing three aspects of ageing: 1) Material degradation, 2) Obsolescence, i.e. operations and technology being “out of date” and 3) Organisational issues. The paper presents six main steps of the life extension process and discusses important issues to consider for operators in a life extension process.

Abstract:
Abstract Pressure cycles in a hydrogen environment can seriously affect the fatigue life of pressure swing absorbers (PSAs). PSAs are typically designed for a 20 to 30-year life and by the time the intended design life is approaching, many operators are challenged with making decisions as to whether they need to purchase new vessels or explore whether or not life extension is a viable option. In many cases, towards the end of design life or during midlife (50–60% of design life), operators elect to conduct a life extension study that includes a Level 3 Fitness for Service assessment and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to evaluate the areas of high stress where fatigue cracks might initiate. The outcome from the FEA is used to develop an inspection strategy. In most cases, it will show that the areas of high stress are around the inlet and outlet nozzles. However, most PSA vessels are well fabricated with nozzles or manways having integral reinforcement and blended nozzle welds, making these areas less susceptible to crack initiation. In the authors’ experience, the real integrity concern is weld peaking in the long seams and/or weld misalignment, and this will not be highlighted by an FEA made from design drawings. Therefore, this paper examines the effect on weld peaking at the longitudinal seams on the fatigue life. However, other potential crack locations are at internal attachment welds, for example, where the inlet screen is welded to the bottom head and these should in general also be considered when inspection strategies and integrity management plans are developed for PSA vessels. The work described in this paper highlights how it is possible to operate PSAs beyond design life by developing inspection plan based on a fracture mechanics approach and basing the underlying FEA stress analysis on laser scan data to capture the level of weld peaking in the long seam welds.

Abstract:
Increasing concerns about global warming, resource depletion, and ecosystem degradation are pushing manufacturing enterprises to consider environmental impacts of the products they make. Tools such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has been developed to quantify environmental performance of a product, yet the implementation of LCA requires a significant amount of time/resources and its potential in assisting eco-design has been limited. Research has been done to conduct automatic LCA using the simplified database for electronics or to investigate the environmental impact of electricity consumption in a manufacturing process. However, a comprehensive and automated approach is in need to perform LCA analysis for a product considering all related materials and manufacturing processes. In this research, a framework for automating LCA analysis for eco-friendly product design has been developed and implemented with a computer program. A case study has been conducted using the proposed automatic LCA tool to perform life cycle analysis in the design process. The result of the tool can, with minimal time required, provide detailed distribution of life cycle impact indicators among direct inputs and assist in making design decisions to reduce the environmental footprints.

Children with disabilities living in orphanages get an ophthalmologic examination quite late, which leads to the further development of vision pathologies and the difficulties of their correction. Even parents of children with special need do not always have information about the necessity of an early ophthalmologic examination or cannot find a suitable specialist. It is recommended to conduct an ophthalmologic examination in the first month of a child's life, which provides sufficient material for predicting the development of the child's vision and possible pathologies. Timely assistance to such children and correction of vision pathologies contributes to the development of their physical activity, intelligence and communication skills

Abstract:
Economic downturn in Nigeria is worsened by the arrival of Covid-19 in the early 2020. By the time economic activities resumed, inflation had skyrocketed. Life became difficult for the generality of the people. Many people including tertiary institutions students are developing shortcuts in the name of spiritual activities. Continuing in this direction portends danger in the future. Therefore, this study entitled: Designing lifelong frameworks for graduates’ employability in Nigeria is embarked upon. The purpose of the study is to emplace lifelong learning frameworks that would encourage graduates in embarking on sustainable and legal jobs after leaving the school. The population of the study comprised final year students from some selected Universities in Nigeria. The study employed research design of survey type, using appropriate statistics for analysis. Focus group discussion also be used to elicit information from the respondents. Findings revealed that respondents disagreed with the view that obtaining degree programme could serve as foundation for building future career. Some students from public university reported that whenever they were given research to conduct, they hardly receive guidance on how to go about it. It is recommended that employers of labour and training brokers should make appropriate use of lifelong learning frame works that will be beneficial when training programme is organised.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common, preventable, and treatable disease characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and progressive airflow obstruction documented on spirometry. Acupuncture, as a safe and economical non-pharmacology therapy, has pronounced therapeutic effects in COPD patients. Several systematic reviews draw the conclusion that acupuncture could improve patients’ quality of life, exercise capacity and dyspnoea, however, the results about lung function were inconclusive. Recently, increasing number of animal studies has been published to illustrate the effects of acupuncture in improving lung function in COPD animal model. However, the efficacy of acupuncture for experimentally induced COPD have not been systematically investigated yet. A systematic review of animal experiments can benefit future experimental designs, promote the conduct and report of basic researches and provide some guidance to translate the achievements of basic researches to clinical application in acupuncture for COPD. Therefore, we will conduct this systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate effects of acupuncture on COPD animal model.

Hart and Jaske. L51957 Permanent Field Repair of SCC - Review. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), November 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0011271.

Full text
Abstract:
Implementing an engineering critical assessment (ECA) to guide the SCC flaw disposition is a valuable tool operators have in making a repair decision. When SCC is found by inspection, the effect of this cracking on failure stress and remaining life must be evaluated to decide what action should be taken continued operation, type of repair, or replacement. This is not widely practiced in industry because of either the unfamiliarity of the analysis or the costs involved. One option considered during this research project was to have operators conduct a generic ECA on their entire line ahead of time, which can be used in the assessment process if SCC is found at a later date. Performing an ECA often demonstrates that a less conservative repair option than what is typically selected by the operator is acceptable for certain SCC defects. A generic repair procedure was developed for this study. The applicable repair techniques depend on the degree of severity of SCC.

Lane, Roger, Larry Lewis, and Himayu Shiotani. Opportunities to Improve Military Policies and Practices to Reduce Civilian Harm From Explosive Weapons in Urban Conflict. UNIDIR, November 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.37559/caap/19/pacav/11.

Full text
Abstract:
This research paper seeks to contribute to further thinking and dialogue among States and their militaries that conduct operations in urbanized environments on what more can be done to reduce civilian harm by proposing practical measures in the form of options for consideration. UNIDIR seeks to enhance knowledge on ways to reduce risks and mitigate harm to civilians from the effects of explosive weapons in urbanized environments. This research frames the issue of explosive weapons in the broader context of protection of civilians in urban conflict and focuses on multilateral operations. The research takes a comprehensive approach to civilian protection from a ‘risk reduction’ perspective—that is, seeking to understand where the risks and uncertainties lie in the entire ‘civilian protection life cycle’, recognizing that civilian harm is the cumulative effect of numerous risks and decisions made from formulating mandates, planning, execution, assessment and response to lessons learned and institutional learning. Particular focus is placed on the targeting and weaponeering processes.

EIWO’s methodological approaches: A field report of the qualitative interviews in EIWO project III. Linköping University Electronic Press, March 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.3384/9789180750585.

Full text
Abstract:
This field report provides detailed information on the methodological approach as well as on the process of data collection and analysis in EIWO project III – “Mechanisms and Origins of Late Working Life Exclusion”. EIWO project III is part of the qualitative part of the EIWO programme and is – together with EIWO project VI, VII, and VIII from phase II – one of the four projects in which primary data is collected. EIWO uses a mixed-methods approach in its nine sub-projects, so that quantitative and qualitative methods are used in combination to investigate – from a life course perspective – the topic of late working life and the potential of extension of working lives on different levels (micro, meso and macro level). Due to the different methodological approaches, results from some projects provide evidence for further investigations in other sub-projects, whereby, for example, results of the qualitative investigations can be validated using large data sets. In projects in the field of life course research, a mixed-methods approach is widely used because it allows for a detailed investigation of the structural, institutional and individual factors influencing the life course. EIWO project III focuses in particular on the micro level by taking the perspective of individuals and thus provides a basis on which quantitative analyses, e.g. in EIWO project IV, can be built on. “The main aims of project III are to analyse the nature and sources of inequalities in late working life employment/retirement and to identify individual/family responses and coping strategies” (Application EIWO programme). Based on these aims, the following research questions were formulated for EIWO project III: What events and circumstances can be identified over the life course that lead to social inequalities/exclusion in late working life employment from the individual perspective? What are the explanatory mechanisms? How are exclusion risks and inequalities assessed on the individual level in late working life? Do persons experience social inequalities/exclusion? If they experience exclusion/inequalities: What coping strategies are/were used to reduce inequalities/exclusion? What can be learned from individual responses as to how meso-level organisational policies and macro-level social policies help or hinder transitions? In the following, it will be described why a qualitative research approach was chosen for this project and what characterises this approach. Then, the research instruments and the inclusion criteria for the sample will be explained. The third chapter illustrates the field phase, including the recruitment phase, the final composition of the sample and the conduct of the interviews, as well as challenges that arose during the field phase and the chosen approaches. Finally, the data analysis method is discussed and the report is concluded with a short summary.

Hoinkes, Ulrich. Indexicality and Enregisterment as Theoretical Approaches to the Sociolinguistic Analysis of Romance Languages. Universitatsbibliothek Kiel, November 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.21941/hoinkesindexenregromlang.

Full text
Abstract:
Social indexicality and enregisterment are basic notions of a theoretical model elaborated in the United States, the aim of which is to describe the relationship between the use of language variation and patterns of social behavior at the level of formal classification. This analytical approach is characterized by focusing on the interrelation of social performance and language awareness. In my contribution, I want to show how this modern methodology can give new impetus to the study of today’s problem areas in Europe, such as migration and language or urban life and language use. In particular, I am interested in the case of Catalan, which has been studied for some time by proponents of the North American enregisterment theory. This leads me to indicate that explicit forms of social conduct, such as language shift or the emblematic use of linguistic forms, can be interpreted with regard to the social indexicality of Catalan. I thus analyze them in a way which shows that authenticity and integration in Catalan society can be achieved to a considerable extent by practicing forms of linguistic enregisterment.

Kiefner and Rosenfeld. I7JUMPH Effects of Pressure Cycles on Gas Pipelines. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), January 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0011287.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this study was to determine whether or not gas pipelines have a significant degree of exposure to failure from seam defects that could become enlarged by pressure-cycle-induced fatigue. If there is a potential problem in this respect, then knowing the conditions and times over which defect growth becomes significant, a pipeline operator can prevent failures by carrying out timely pipeline integrity assessments. In this study, times to failure were computed for worst-case hypothetical seam defects that would have barely survived a hydrostatic test to 100 percent of SMYS and subsequently subjected to the pressure-cycle histories of typical gas pipelines. The predicted times to failure ranged from 170 years to more than 400 years, indicating that in most circumstances, gas pipelines are not at significant risk of failure from the pressure-cycle-induced growth of seam defects that may exist after a hydrostatic test because the times to failure for this mode of crack growth are much longer than the expected useful life of a typical gas pipeline. Therefore, there is no need, in general, to conduct periodic integrity assessments of gas pipelines from the standpoint of pressure-cycle-induced fatigue in seams.
