Abstract:
The paper aims is to present and evaluate the Review the History of Serbian Literature A. N. Pipin's as a classical history of Serbian literature that became part of the national culture. The development of the history of literature among Serbs, as an independent discipline and its modest beginnings, can be found in the first decades of the 19th century, in the time of Dositej and Vuk. In its beginnings, the history of literature was a "story" about the literary past of a nation and at its core was - criticism. This main idea as an axiom is a signpost that leads from the history of literature, which has long performed the function of criticism, to the genesis of literary criticism as the youngest branch of literary science and the way it formulated and exercised its functions in conditions when literary history was in a certain measures and history of the people. The Serbs received the first History of Serbian Literature (1865) from the pen of Pavel Jozef Šafarik (1795–1861), a Protestant and German student who served in Novi Sad. The next history of Serbian literature was also written by a foreigner, the Russian Alexander Nikolaevich Pipina (1833–1904). His Review the History of Serbian Literature (1865) has not been fully translated into Serbian. When marking questions from the new Serbian literature, Pipin's approach leads to a synthesis of ideas about cultural and political and national development. Slavery replaced the idea of revival "among Orthodox Serbs who fled to Austria". From that perspective, he views the development of national literature as an important part of culture and identity. Pipin also deals with the issue of national identity and the awakening of the national consciousness of the Slavs in his extensive study "Panslavism in the Past and Present" (1878), in which "the Serbian national question is incorporated into the general critique of Russian official policy and Slavophile orientation in the Balkans during Eastern Europe crisis". In this paper, we value his competence, cultural mission, the gift of the comparator, without which there is no great literary historian, and his practical contribution to classifying Serbian literature and culture in the European context.

Abstract:
The reality of violence is a reality in relationship that has never disappeared from human life, the triggers also vary, ranging from personal issues, politics, economic culture, even religion. Violence is an action that always results in a bad impact for those who are the object of violence, so that it is not expected to exist in human relations. Furthermore, it cannot be denied that religion is one of the causes of violence, this is caused by various factors, one of which is the problem is about interpretation of the biblical text’s, so that it is necessary to study or interpret the biblical text with the right approach. The description in this research will focus on Joshua 6:1-27 with a narrative criticism approach which is certainly supported by other approaches such as historical criticism and grammatical criticism. So that through this study it will lead to an understanding that the story of the destroyed carried out by Joshua and the nation of Israel is a legitimate act because they acted on God's command. So that Joshua's actions cannot be classified as acts of violence in the name of religion.

Vasic, Aleksandar. "Serbian musical criticism and essay writings during the XIXth and the first half of the XXth century as a subject of musicology research." Muzikologija, no. 6 (2006): 317–42. http://dx.doi.org/10.2298/muz0606317v.

Full text
Abstract:
The beginning of 2006 marked two decades since the death of Stana Djuric-Klajn, the first historian of Serbian musical literature. This is the exterior motive for presenting a summary of the state and results of up-to-date musicology research into Serbian musical criticism and essay writings during the XIXth and the first half of the XXth century, alongside the many works dedicated to this branch of national musical history, recently published. In this way the reader is given a detailed background of these studies ? mainly the authors' names, books, studies, articles, as well as the problems of this branch of Serbian musicology. The first research is associated with the early years of the XXth century, that is, to the work of bibliography. The pioneer of Serbian ethnomusicology, Vladimir R. Djordjevic composed An Essay of the Serbian Musical Bibliography until 1914, noting selected XIXth century examples of Serbian literature on music. Bibliographic research was continued by various institutions and experts during the second half of the XXth century: in Zagreb (today Republic of Croatia); the Yugoslav Institute for Lexicography, Novi Sad (Matica srpska); and Belgrade (Institute for Literature and Art, Slobodan Turlakov, Ljubica Djordjevic, Stanisa Vojinovic etc). In spite of the efforts of these institutions and individuals, a complete analytic bibliography of music in Serbian print of the last two centuries has unfortunately still not been made. The most important contributions to historical research, interpretation and validation of Serbian musical criticism and essay writings were given by Stana Djuric-Klajn, Dr Roksanda Pejovic and Dr Slobodan Turlakov. Professor Stana Djuric-Klajn was the first Serbian musicologist to work in this field of Serbian music history. She wrote a significant number of studies and articles dedicated to Serbian musical writers and published their selected readings. Prof. Klajn is the author and editor of the first and only anthology of Serbian musical essay writings. Her student Roksanda Pejovic published two books (along with numerous other factually abundant contributions), where she synthetically presented the history of Serbian criticism and essay writings from 1825 to 1941. Slobodan Turlakov, an expert in Serbian criticism between the World Wars, meritorious researcher and original interpreter, especially examined the reception of music of great European composers (W. A. Mozart, L. v. Beethoven, F. Chopin, G. Verdi, G. Puccini etc) by Serbian musical critics. Serbian musical criticism and essay writings were also the focus of attention of many other writers. The work quotes comments and additions of other musicologists, but also historians of theatre, literature and art philosophers, aestheticians, sociologists, all members of different generations, who worked or still work on the history of the Serbian musical criticism and essay writings. The closing section of the text suggests directions for future research. Firstly, it is necessary to begin integral bibliographical research of texts about music published in our press during the cited period. That is a project of capital significance for national science and culture; realization needs adequate funding, the involvement of many academic experts, and time. Work on bibliography will also enable the collection and publication of sources: books and articles by Serbian music writers who worked before 1945. A separate problem is education of scholars. To study musical literature, a musicologist needs to be knowledgeable about the history of Serbian literature, aesthetic theory, and theatre, national social, political and cultural history, and methodology of literary study. That is why facilities for postgraduate and doctorial studies in musicology are necessary at the Faculties of Philology and Philosophy.

Abstract:
For several years Sam worked on a regional interpretation team in the company's exploration department. During this time he participated in a number of meetings attended by members of the company's Global Exploration Assurance (GEA) team, top geoscientists from headquarters who traveled from office to office to assess the effectiveness of exploration groups throughout the company. One of these meetings in particular stands out in Sam's mind. On this occasion the regional studies manager and two of his direct reports, both interpretation team leaders, presented a status report for an ongoing integrated regional project. The study area covered a large basin in which the company had a significant acreage position and was seeking to acquire additional leases in two emerging plays. No one could have foreseen what would happen in that meeting.

Abstract:
Abstract This article evaluates the relationship between the texts of 1 Sam 2:22 and Exod 38:8 using a methodology that proceeds from textual criticism to literary criticism. According to a traditional text-critical approach of the available textual witnesses (MT, LXX, 4QSama), the short reading of 1 Sam 2:22 found in LXXB 4QSama is preferable to that of MT. By contrast, using a literary critical approach, this article proposes that MT-Exod 38:8 depends on MT-1 Sam 2:22 and not vice versa. MT-1 Sam 2:22 has greater affinity with Num 4:23 and 8:24 regarding the terminology used for the women’s ‘cultic service’ at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. 1 Sam 2:22b ought to be regarded as a post-P addition made after the text of the LXX had been translated from the Hebrew. For Exod 38:8 and related texts, we examine the role of the Vetus Latina in resolving this text-critical problem.

Volks, Carolyn Dana. "The representation of women in the plays of Sam Shepard." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002383.

Full text
Abstract:
In the endeavour to abolish from society all forms of ideologies that prescribe the domination of one sex over another, it has become increasingly important to analyse the representation of women in dramatic literature because dramatic literature reflects the philosophies and codes of behaviour which enable individuals to dominate one another in society, and assists in either reinforcing old ideologies or shaping new ones. Although Sam Shepard has been an influential force in the creation of modern drama, his plays reflect a patriarchal ideology that dictates that women are subordinate to men. Shepard's plays dramatise various male predicaments and his female characters are constructed and utilised to express men's experience, not women's. One of the conflicts which besets the male characters is that they desire to return to the womb of the mother, but simultaneously fear that their identities will be engulfed by the mother. In The Rock Garden, Red Cross and Fourteen Hundred Thousand, these desires and fears are demonstrated through the female characters, who are manipulated to represent objects of male desire and/or objects onto which devouring images are projected. Women are therefore represented in a manner in which they are best able to express the male characters' identity related conflicts. In Curse of the Starving Class and Buried Child, characters suffer from receiving insufficient nurture, are spiritually and emotionally impoverished or cursed and appear unable to transform their lives. The female characters are presented as being partly responsible for causing these predicaments since their nurturing, generative and transformative abilities are presented in a negative light. Women are also represented as objects of blame in the male characters' attempts and failures to undergo rebirths and are once again created to express male predicaments. In Fool for Love and A Lie of the Mind, Shepard focuses on the relationships between men and women, but is only able to present the male characters' perspectives and represent male desire. The female characters are regarded, and engaged with, as reflections of the male characters' selves and are frequently utilised to express male desire. If Shepard's plays are persistently applauded and seen as examples to be emulated, we need to closely analyse these dramas that represent women in a manner which expresses male predicaments and which places them in roles that allow men to dominate them.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is in two chapters. Chapter one is about intentions. Literary theorists have, by and large, dismissed their relevance to interpretation, so it will be useful to consider what exactly is being ignored. Therefore, I devote chapter one to a clarification of the nature and role(s) of intention within the interlocking network of basic propositional attitudes. I argue that intentions incorporate both a functional and a representational dimension, triggering actional mechanisms and structuring the process of practical reasoning.
Chapter two is about interpretation. I open the chapter with an examination of extreme conventionalist theses, arguing that their success depends on an unjustifiably strict demarcation between intentionality and textuality. Appropriating aspects of Donald Davidson's work in the philosophy of language, I argue for the recognition of linguistic communication as a form of intentional action. I then defend this thesis against more moderate conventionalist theories to offer a viable approach to the interpretation of literary works.

Meir, Amira. "Medieval Jewish interpretation of pentateuchal poetry." Thesis, McGill University, 1994. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=28842.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation studies parts of six medieval Jewish Torah commentaries in order to examine how they related to what we call Pentateuchal poetry. It examines their general approaches to Bible interpretation and their treatments of all Pentateuchal poems. It focusses on qualities we associate with poetry--parallelism, structure, metaphor, and syntax--and explores the extent to which they treated poems differently from prose.
The effort begins by defining Pentateuchal poetry and discussing a range of its presentations by various ancient writers. Subsequent chapters examine its treatment by Rabbi Saadia Gaon of Baghdad (882-942), Abraham Ibn Ezra of Spain (1089-1164), Samuel Ben Meir (1080-1160) and Joseph Bekhor Shor (12th century) of Northern France, David Kimhi of Provence (1160-1235), and Obadiah Sforno of Italy (1470-1550).
While all of these commentators wrote on the poetic passages, none differentiated systematically between Pentateuchal prose and poetry or treated them in substantially different ways. Samuel Ben Meir, Ibn Ezra, Bekhor Shor, and Kimhi did discuss some poetic features of these texts. The other two men were far less inclined to do so, but occasionally recognized some differences between prose and poetry and some phenomena unique to the latter.

Abstract:
Steinberg marked a gamechanger in the understanding of Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. The arguments with which Steinberg fought the limits of the formalist critics appear to have become unchallengeable from the 1960s on, the moment that Art History began to undergo a colossal transformation. Steinberg opened the doors wide to new critical focus on Modern Art. Among the doors he opened, were the biographical and psychological considerations about Les Demoiselles. This chapter presents a brief summary of the psychobiographic and contextualist interpretations of the work, including one of the most important by William Rubin who saw Les Demoiselles as a reflection of Picasso's psychosexual problems and presented unpublished documentation that would be of vital importance for future criticism and historiography.

Full text
Abstract:
The expressive systems in architecture consists of two components: the system of forms and the system of meanings, these systems are linked together by unwritten rules, which are a matrix of correlations / implications that determine any meanings associated with any forms. The designer remains unsure of the possible interpretations of his design, because of the variation in the nature of meaning, discovered by the recipient, and this stems from the variation of reliance on the theory of interpretation in this regard. Many studies of architectural semiology indicate some of these theories; Classical theory believes in the natural meaning, which influenced by form's geometry, Pragmatic theory believes in the common meaning, which stems from the use of form within different contexts and according to social custom. The research attempts to explore the aspects of interpretation adopted by two critics, in order to determine the theory adopted by them, so the designer will be aware to the nature and type of meaning comprehended by viewers. The results showed the adoption of common and inclusive meanings, also showed the variation in the role of architectural Expressions in confirming or multiplying the meaning, influenced by contexts and signal types. The conclusion emphasized the importance of historical references, stylistic trend, and spatial contexts in form interpretation.

Abstract:
The aim of the paper is to emphasize the importance of source criticism in etymological research. It is widely known that the main sources for the early history of toponyms in the Carpathian Basin are the charters created in the medieval Hungarian Kingdom, because these official documents contained a large number of vernacular proper names embedded in the Latin text. However, it is important to mention that the medieval charters were produced by the chancery and places of authentication along specific principles and needs. I argue that this circumstance must always be considered during the interpretation of the data. I will show some examples illustrating that – in certain cases – we have to take into account the nature of the sources in the reconstruction of the genesis of place names. My goal is to offer a brief outline of this issue through my own investigations.

Abstract:
The paper explores the use by Euthymius Chudovsky of Maximus the Greek’s achievements in the linguistic revision of biblical texts. Correction and translation of the New Testament by Euthymius in the 1680s demonstrates not only the appeal to the texts translated by Maximus as language patterns, but also the development of his philological criticism of the text of Holy Scripture and its interpretation.

Abstract:
The article gives an aesthetic interpretation of the art criticism judgment - “An everlasting day” in relation to the painting “Hunters in the Snow” by the Dutch artist, representative of the Northern Renaissance (16th century) Pieter Bruegel (Muzhitsky). In the context of the ideas of phenomenological aesthetics, the type of painting is determined, a conclusion is made about the applicability of the considered judgment to paintings of a certain type, examples of such works from Russian art are given.

Abstract:
Self-assembled monolayers (SAM) formed on gold or hydroxylated surfaces are well ordered organic surfaces that enable the control of interface property at the molecular scale. Microcontact printing is a simple technique that can pattern the formation of SAM in the plane with dimensions on the micron scale. The combination of SAM and microcontact printing makes a technique useful for studying a variety of fundamental phenomena in bio-interfacial science such as cell adhesion. However, the existence of surface roughness tends to impede the effectiveness of the method in generating the desirable interface properties. Studies have shown that surface roughness significantly changes adhesion of SAM coated material. The current study tries to understand the roughness effects on bio-adhesion of cell-SAM substratum. A current model of cell adhesion considers the effects of nonspecific and specific interactions between adhesion molecules and the substrate assuming an isotropic Gaussian distributed roughness. Simulation results show the change of pull-off force and contact area due to different scales of roughness. The reduction rate of cell adhesion due to roughness and chemical-mechanical factors are then compared to show the significance of roughness effects on SAM adhesion. Results suggest that caution must be taken in quantitative interpretation of protein and cell adsorption strength by using SAM device as a biosensor.

Abstract:
Abstract The major interest presented by a Scanning Acoustic Microscope (SAM) for microassembling technologies is to characterize system integrity without alteration in internal structures of the different samples. But ultrasonic waves nature, propagation diversity and spatial resolution obtained close to optical one, induce instructive information contained into images. So the interpretation quality images will be directly linked with samples nature, used tool thorough and spatial ultrasonic probe resolution. In this paper, we present first an analytical approach of spatial resolution of SAM. Moreover, we propose calculations about field depth within media. Then, we correlate theoretical results by performing tests on special calibrated samples with two microscopes: commercial one and specific acoustic system developed in IXL Laboratory. In a second time, we characterize few microassembling technologies with two techniques: A-SCAN and C-SCAN analysis modes. Both methods highlight some differences in ability detection of weak defects due to highest interface view (best resolution and contrast) in particular with the C-SCAN mode. In fine, we show typical microassembling technologies analysis and we conclude about the place of SAM in failure control and reliability analysis.
