Abstract:

In this article I describe the re-identification of two Targum manuscripts thought to be lost. (1) A Pentateuch with Targum formerly held in the convent of S. Salvatore, Bologna (Kennicott 532): I show that the lost manuscript is identical with MS. Vatican ebr. 608, and provide an updated catalogue summary of the Hebrew manuscripts from the convent’s library. (2) A manuscript of Writings Targums in Turin, National University Library, 22 (A.II.2): an examination of the restored remains of the manuscript reveals it contains a hitherto unknown copy of the Aramaic Dream of Mordecai.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Introduction sets the scene for the rest of the book, namely, the case of the lost and found masterpiece by Leonardo da Vinci, the Salvator Mundi. The book aims to set out a comprehensive analysis of this essential addition to Leonardo‗s oeuvre, which emerged in 2005. The aim is to serve as an introduction to the study of this painting and a reference for future explorations which it is hoped this text will provoke. The book considers three facets of the story but does not cover every aspect, leaving the case open for further discussion.

Abstract:
Abstract Veronica in the Latin tradition, and Bernice or Berenice in the Greek, is the woman who is identified in apocryphal texts (such as the Acts of Pilate and the Book of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ by Bartholomew the Apostle) as the unnamed woman cured by Jesus of her issue of blood in Mark 5: 25. The later apocryphal tradition in the medieval text known as the Vindicta Salvatoris (or the Avenging of the Saviour) names Veronica as the woman who wiped Christ ‘s face with a cloth. According to the legend, the image of his face was preserved on the cloth. The story in the Vindicta Salvatoris, from which the extract below is taken, tells how Titus, a convert to Christianity, came with Vespasian in order to destroy the enemies of Christ by overthrowing Jerusalem. The Emperor, Tiberius, then sent his kinsman, Velosian, to Jerusalem to locate Veronica and her cloth, so that through it he (the Emperor) could be cured of an illness. The tone throughout much of this book is anti-Jewish. (The medieval Latin text known as the Mars Pilati also tells of Veronica and her wonder-working kerchief.) From the eighth century a ‘veil of Veronica ‘ has been preserved in Rome, from the end of the thirteenth century in St Peter ‘s. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries it was the object of much veneration, as it was believed to effect cures. But Veronica has been given a place of continuing devotion in Christian practice because of the Stations of the Cross.

Abstract:
The Epilogue looks at two sustained and focused discussions by cataloguers of Leonardo paintings. The first is by Luke Syson in the London catalogue. The second is in the latest edition of Frank Zöllner‗s monograph, which has become a standard point of reference for information on Leonardo’s painted oeuvre and assessment of the status of each work. The Epilogue concludes that whatever the fate of this painting, the art world should regard itself as privileged to have such a significant painting in its domain.
