Abstract:
AbstractRe-actualization of the 19th and 20th Century Photographic Printing Technology: The Case of KOPPI Student Activity Group. The sophistication of digital photography technology does not satisfy some photographers, especially those who tend towards art photography. Instead, they looked back at old techniques, such as those of the 19th-century based on chemical principles, including cyanotype, salt print, vandyke print, and gum bichromate print. Most of the printing techniques are re-actualized by a number of photographers with different orientations. This paper examines how Old Photographic Processes Student Activity Group of ISI Yogyakarta(KOPPI) did more than just technical reconstruction, They used these unique media for conveying messages of personal and cultural issue. Participatory observation techniques were used during the four processes of creation: introduction, exploration, experimentation, and presentation. The finding showed that in using the old photo printing technique the participants had to negotiate three aspects, namely the technical understanding, materials, and cultural concepts. After they reached a sufficient technical and material understanding, the participants began to explore cultural issues. Cultural issues about deviations of society’s behavior, sadness, and society’s response to every day life have been raised to be the themes of the work through the old photo printing technique. Members of KOPPI take advantage of the old-fashioned impressions and flexibility of print media to realize these things.

Abstract:
A contactless label-free method using a diamagnetophoretic ink to rapidly print three-dimensional (3D) scaffold-free multicellular structures is described. The inks consist of MCF-7 cells that are suspended in a culture medium to which a paramagnetic salt, diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid gadolinium (III) dihydrogen salt hydrate (Gd-DTPA), is added. When a magnetic field is applied, the host fluid containing the paramagnetic salt is attracted towards regions of high magnetic field gradient, displacing the ink towards regions with a low gradient. Using this method, 3D structures are printed on ultra-low attachment (ULA) surfaces. On a tissue culture treated (TCT) surface, a 3D printed spheroid coexists with a two-dimensional (2D) cell monolayer, where the composite is termed as a 2.5D structure. The 3D structures can be magnetically printed within 6 hours in a medium containing 25 mM Gd-DTPA. The influence of the paramagnetic salt on MCF-7 cell viability, cell morphology, and ability of cells to adhere to each other to stabilize the printed structures on both ULA and TCT surfaces is investigated. Gene expressions of hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF1α) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) allow comparison of the relative stresses for the printed 3D and 2.5D cell geometries with those for 3D spheroids formed without magnetic assistance. This magnetic printing method can be potentially scaled to a higher throughput to rapidly print cells into 3D heterogeneous cell structures with variable geometries with repeatable dimensions for applications such as tissue engineering and tumour formation for drug discovery.

Abstract:
Concurrent administration of more than one drug is a common practice in medical science and in such case one drug may affect the pharmacology of another drug. Ciprofloxacin is a commonly used antibiotic in Bangladesh and frequently prescribed with paracetamol and zinc salt for concomitant use in patients suffering from infections. Therefore, the interaction of ciprofloxacin with paracetamol and zinc salt was studied in vitro at pH 1.2, 6.8 and 7.4 which are related to gastric, intestinal juices and blood, respectively. Analysis of drug-drug and drug-metal complexation was carried out by using UV/VIS spectrophotometer as well as the conductometric titration. It was observed that ciprofloxacin formed complex with paracetamol and zinc at pH 1.2.© 2012 JSR Publications. ISSN: 2070-0237 (Print); 2070-0245 (Online). A new type of solid state solar cell is produced by using Fe2O3 (working electrode) and SiC as a hole collector (counter electrode). Two molten salts, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (EMICl) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide (BMII) were used as crystal growth inhibitors with a SiC film. It was found that BMII shows about 10 times higher efficiency compared to an EMICI-based SiC film solar cell. Keywords: Fe2O3; SiC; Solid state solar cell; Molten salt. © 2009 JSR Publications. A series of polyimide (PI)-organically modified clay nanocomposites were made to enhance tensile modulus, thermal stability of PI. PI was made from 3, 3', 4, 4'-biphenyl tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA), p-phenylediamine (PDA). Montmorillonite (MMT), one type of layered clay, was treated by dodecylamine salt. XRD indicated that organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) layers were exfoliated and dispersed into PI-film. Tensile measurements indicated that small amount of OMMT (up to 3%) increased tensile modulus nicely. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the nano-composites are higher than those of pristine PI. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that nanocomposites have higher decomposition temperatures in comparison with the original PI. Abstract:
In 2010, 193 Member States of the World Health Organization (WHO) endorsed World Health Assembly Resolution WHA63.14 to restrict the marketing of food and beverage products high in fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) to children to prevent obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). No study has examined HFSS marketing policies across the WHO regional office countries in the Americas. Between 2018 and 2019, a transdisciplinary team examined policies to restrict HFSS food and beverage product marketing to children to develop a responsible policy index (RESPI) that provides a quality score based on policy characteristics and marketing techniques. After designing the RESPI, we conducted a comprehensive literature review through October 2019 to examine policies in 14 countries in the WHO Americans Region. We categorized policies (n = 38) as either self-regulatory or statutory and calculated the RESPI scores, ranked from 0 (lowest) to 10 (highest). Results showed Brazil, Canada, Chile, and Uruguay had the highest RESPI scores associated with statutory policies that restricted point of sale, cartoon, licensed media characters and celebrities; and HFSS products in schools and child care settings, and broadcast and print media. Policymakers can use the RESPI tool to evaluate marketing policies within and across geopolitical boundaries to protect children’s diet and health.

Abstract:
Purpose – The study aims to synthesise new thiophene-based dyes by an efficient method using sodium a-cyanoketene dithiolates as starting components for synthesis of tetra-substituted thiophenes, which act as a coupler for the synthesised dye. The synthesised dyes are applied for printing polyamide and polyester fabrics using the screen printing technique. Design/methodology/approach – Treatment of 1 with carbon disulfide in alkaline medium forming disodium salt 2, which act as starting point for heterocyclisation to prepare these dye stuff 7. Sodium a-cyanoketene dithiolates 2 react with two moles of phenacyl bromide derivatives, forming alkylsulfanylthiophenes which react with the diazonium salt, forming the target dyestuff. These prepared dyes are used to print polyamide and polyester fabrics by using a synthetic thickener in the printing paste using screen-printing techniques. Findings – The structure of synthesised dyes were established and confirmed for the reaction products on the basis of their elemental analysis and spectral data (IR and 1H-NMR). The suitability of the prepared dyestuffs for screen printing on polyamide and polyester fabrics has been investigated. The prints obtained from dyes possess high colour strength as well as excellent overall fastness properties. Research limitations/implications – The diazo coupling reaction of the starting tetra-substituted thiophene 5 with diazotised aromatic amines resulted in the formation of the corresponding dye. The synthesised dyes were utilised in preparing a paste for polyester and polyamide fabric printing. In addition, both of the variations of the substituents on the synthesised dyes and the fastness properties were also studied. Practical implications – The synthesised dyes are superior in terms of yield, purity, colour strength and fastness properties, which lead to valuable achievements for commercial production. Social implications – The synthesised dyes are superior for application in fabrics. Originality/value – The synthesis for novel thiophene-based dye stuff for application in printing properties on polyester and polyamide fabrics and study their fastness properties.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Vertebrate ichnology in North America has a long and distinguished history, starting with the remarkable discoveries by Edward Hitchcock of dinosaur footprints and trackways in the Connecticut River Valley. Hitchcock assembled a unique collection that is currently housed in the Beneski Museum of Natural History, Amherst College, and his work essentially constituted the beginnings of ichnology as a viable sub-discipline of paleontology. Although his original interpretation that these Late Triassic locomotion traces were bird tracks was incorrect, he indirectly linked birds and dinosaurs. Other talented amateurs including John Collins Warren, James Deane, Dexter Marsh and Roswell Field worked on these track sites and some were prolific authors. Three major books have significance, Dr. John Collins Warren published his book Remarks on Some Fossil Impressions in the Sandstone Rocks of Connecticut River in 1854 making it the second book ever published exclusively on ichnology and the second American publication (and first American scientific publication) to be illustrated with a photograph, a salt print, used as the frontispiece depicting what he interpreted as the fossilized tracks of prehistoric birds. James Deane published a book in 1861entitled Ichnographs from the Sandstone of Connecticut River containing photographs and etchings. Finally, Edward Hitchcock published The Supplement to the Ichnology of New England in 1865 that contained seven albumen prints by the professional photographer J. Lovell of Amherst. These volumes pioneered the use of photography in American scientific publications.

Abstract:
A hypermedia information system was developed to recommend trees for landscaping and to obtain information on these individual trees. Using the software HyperCard on the Macintosh computer, we developed a system that uses the idea of index cards with information being stored on separate screens called “cards.” Using a mouse, the user navigates from one card to another by click on a “button” on the card. The user may select from several criteria including tree type, tree height, soil type, drought tolerance, wind tolerance, shade tolerance, salt tolerance, and growth rate. The program then finds which trees meet the desired criteria and provides information on these trees. This easy-to-use system requires no typing except to enter a word to search for. The user can quickly browse for the desired information and save it as a text file or print it. The Farmer's Bookshelf provides a tool for extension agents, growers, and homeowners to easily obtain vitally needed information. The program has further application for landscape companies, Master Gardener programs, and in horticultural courses.

Abstract:
Changes in the mechanical properties of selective laser melted maraging steel 300 induced by exposure to a simulated marine environment were investigated. Maraging steel samples were printed in three orientations: vertical (V), 45° (45), and horizontal (H) relative to the print bed. These were tested as-printed or after heat-treatment (490 °C, 600 °C, or 900 °C). One set of specimens were exposed in a salt spray chamber for 500 h and then compared to unexposed samples. Environmental attack induced changes in the microstructural features and composition were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy respectively. Samples printed in the H and 45° directions exhibited higher tensile strength than those printed in the V direction. Corrosion induced reduction in strength and hardness was more severe in specimens heat-treated between 480 °C and 600 °C versus as-printed samples. The greatest decrease in tensile strength was observed for the 45°-printed heat-treated samples after exposure. A comparison between additive and subtractive manufactured maraging steel is presented.

Abstract:
In the autumn of 1874, Austrian popular society seemed ablaze with talk of ice. The Habsburg monarchy's first major polar expedition was returning, and, as the German geographer August Petermann put it, “No field commander, returning home with his army victorious from battle, could be received more magnificently and enthusiastically than this small band of twenty- two men.” The first published narrative of the expedition was released in Vienna around 24 September and had sold out of its print run of forty-five thousand copies by 27 September. This figure, however, is dwarfed by contemporary estimates of the multitude that turned up to welcome the explorers to Vienna on 25 September: around a quarter million, or approximately one-fourth of the city's entire population. Although such figures should be taken with a grain of salt, the festivities that greeted the explorers involved possibly the largest crowds seen on the streets of Vienna between the revolutions of 1848–49 and the mass marches of the Social Democratic Party in support of universal male suffrage around the turn of the century.

Abstract:
For on-site copper recovery in print circuit board factories, we propose a novel technology to obtain cupric oxide with a low content ratio of chloride from high chloride concentration waste, such as cupric chloride etchant waste. Our technology is designed to avoid formation of double salt and accumulation of cupric hydroxide. In the proposed method, etchant waste mixed with hydrogen peroxide solution is added to sodium hydroxide solution by stepwise addition. We performed lab-scale experiments on the influence of reaction pH conditions on the content ratio of chloride in recovering cupric oxide. The results show that recycled cupric oxide tends to contain a lower content ratio of chloride under higher starting temperatures and higher final pH conditions of the reaction. We also confirmed the optimized conditions; the starting temperature of the sodium hydroxide solution is higher than 70 °C, and the final pH of the reaction is 11.5 to 12. Based on the optimized temperature and pH conditions, we also performed a pilot trial to recover cupric oxide from real etchant waste. Then, we successfully obtained cupric oxide with a content ratio of chloride in 80 mg-Cl/kg-CuO.

Abstract:
The lightfastness of prints is an extremely important characteristic for assessing their print stability. The fastness properties of prints can be described in terms of print durability and image stability. Good lightfastness assures the good print stability after long use. This study has focused to describe the lightfastness of printed foil samples due to long time exposure. It may also be used for the authenticity or validity of the product. Moreover, any kind of deterioration in package print quality will affect the sale value of the product adversely. Little work has been done to study the fastness properties of printed films and foils. In this work, blister foils printed in the gravure printing process are taken as the sample as it has extensive usage in food and medicine packaging. The samples are exposed in artificial lightfastness tester BGD 865/A Bench Xenon Test Chamber (B-SUN) for assessing the light fastness of cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink on the foil. The spectral curves and colorimetric values of prints are measured in the ocean optics spectroradiometer (DH2000BAL) before and after exposure. An Artificial Neural Network model (ANN) is proposed to predict the fading rate of the printed foil. The optimal model gives excellent prediction with the minimum mean square error (MSE) for each color and a correlation coefficient of 0.98-0.99.

Abstract:
In the first part of the paper, the focus is on historical and technical aspects of the invention of photography, beginning with the first research works conducted by J.N. Niépce up to the patenting of daguerreotype in 1839 by L. Daguerre. In the further section of the paper emphasis is put on the fast spread of photography; short profiles of the first Polish photographers who contributed to promoting photography: J. Giwartowski, K. Beyer, W. Rzewuski, and M. Strasz, are given. Furthermore, the early-19th-century discourse between the artistic and photographic circles is briefly discussed, with some comments by e.g. E. Delacroix, P. Delaroche, Ch. Baudelaire, L. Daguerre quoted. Subsequently, the early displays of photographs in exhibitions and museums are described, e.g. during the 1851 First World Exhibition in London and at the South Kensington Museum in 1858. What follows this is a presentation of selected photographic techniques, shown against the events related to given inventions, e.g.: daguerreotype, salt print, techniques based on the collodion process, compounds of dichromates and chromates, calotype, cyanotype. Further, source reference is given to describe potential threats related to the degradation, damage, and a possible repair of images recorded in photographs. Another section of the paper is dedicated to presenting artistic movements in photography which formed in the late 19th century. The final part speaks of the questions related to e.g. storage humidity and temperature, display of photographic objects that are in museum collections, and pH of materials and frames; the author also reflects on the need to digitize collections.

The relationship between chemistry and biology is succinctly embodied in the often-cited statement "cells obey the laws of chemistry". In this context, it is also relevant to reflect on the opening lines of the famous paper by Watson and Crick: "We wish to suggest a structure for the salt of deoxyribose nucleic acid [DNA]. This structure has novel features which are of considerable biological interest" [Nature, April 25, 737 (1953)]. The elucidation of the structure of DNA and the understanding of its implications in the fundamental processes of life have laid the foundation for the transformation of biology into a truly molecular science. An important note of caution on the interaction between chemistry and biology has been wisely expressed by Arthur Kornberg (Nobel laureate in medicine 1959) "...chemistry and biology are two distinctive cultures and the rift between them is serious, generally unappreciated, and counterproductive" [Biochemistry26, 6888 (1987)]. Fortunately, continued developments have resulted in building highly significant bridges between chemistry and biology. Thus, the impact of genomic research has led to further erosion of the boundaries between chemistry and biology.Disciplines in science evolve over time, and new terms emerge which more adequately cover the evolutionary changes that take place in the disciplinary landscape. Today, there is an acknowledged recognition of a multidisciplinary area in which biological phenomena and biological processes are being defined in terms of detailed structural and mechanistic molecular events - this area represents the integration of chemistry and biology. The increasing role of molecular-level chemistry in biology has led to definitions such as biological chemistry or biomolecular chemistry.IUPAC is alert to new developments in all areas in which the role of chemistry is implicated. In an earlier initiative, the scope of activities of two of the IUPAC Divisions of basic chemistry (viz. organic and physical chemistry) was expanded to include the activities directed at understanding the chemical basis of biological phenomena. Furthermore, an interdivisional committee on biomolecular chemistry was established. Deliberations within this committee have resulted in the development of the IUPAC project 2005-042-1-300 on "Chemistry for Biology". The focus of this project was to organize a Symposium-in-Print that would illustrate the fundamental role of chemistry in a wide variety of biological topics. The project has been initiated by the Division of Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry and is actively supported by a number of IUPAC Divisions and standing committees. These groups have assigned representatives to the task group of the project in order to have an input into the project from their specific chemical background. Some of the task group members have contributed papers to the present Symposium-in-Print.It should be pointed out that the present Symposium-in-Print complements the contributions from several recent IUPAC-sponsored conferences such as the combined International Conference on Biodiversity (ICOB-5) and International Symposium on the Chemistry of Natural Products (ISCNP-25) in Kyoto, Japan, 2006, and the 9th Eurasia Conference on Chemical Sciences, Antalya, Turkey, 2006. Proceedings of these symposia are published in Pure and Applied Chemistry (PAC). Taken together, these contributions constitute a broad spectrum of illustrations demonstrating the role and the fundamental implications of chemistry for biology. It is a sad duty to report that Prof. Alastair I. Scott, one of the contributors to the Symposium-in-Print, passed away on 18 April 2007. Prof. Scott was Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Director, Center of Biological NMR, Texas A and M University. He was internationally held in high esteem as a scientist who built bridges between chemistry and biology with his work. Within IUPAC's Division of Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry, he played an active role in enthusiastically promoting the awareness of the relevance of chemistry for biology. Ian, as he was known to many of us, will be missed by all those who knew him. This issue of PAC is dedicated to his memory.Torbjörn NorinTask Group ChairmanUpendra PanditTask Group Member

Abstract:
Chemistry is a science emphasizing both theory and experimentation. After learning the theoretical knowledge, experimental operation can help students understand chemical concepts and transform them into practical knowledge. Considering the safety issue and the lack of teaching time and experimental equipment, some teachers often choose to demonstrate an experiment instead of letting students conduct it by themselves. This may affect their learning motivation as well as the construction of chemical concepts and hands-on skills. This study combined the augmented reality (AR) technology with the operating principle of the Daniell cell to develop a virtual experiment for the application in high school chemistry courses. Students can conduct the virtual experiment using mobile devices by selecting the required equipment and materials from a deck of cards to set up the experimental environment. In the virtual experiment, students can use the galvanometer to measure the current after mounting the salt bridge on the beakers containing zinc sulfate and copper sulfate solutions. They can also see the change of molecular structures and movement of electrons and ions during the redox reactions to understand the important concepts and knowledge. An empirical research has been performed, and the analytical results show that both the virtual experiment and the real experiment could improve students’ learning achievement, but the former was more effective for the low-achievement students because they could explore autonomously to enhance cognition by observing the submicroscopic view of the redox reactions. The post-test results show that the average score of the low-achievement students in the experimental group (41.60) was significantly higher than that of the control group (27.67). Questionnaire results reveal that most students were satisfied with the learning contents, user interface, learning motivation, system reality, and practicality of the virtual experiment, and the average satisfaction score was 3.98 out of 5. The application of virtual experiments is not limited by time or space. Students only need to download the application (APP) software and print out the AR cards to practice at home, so it is suitable for large-scale promotion in rural areas.

Abstract:
<p>This paper explains the techno-economical feasibility of very efficient direct energy conversion of standard seawater electrolytes to electrical energy based on solid state power electronics. It can be shown by applying free Gibbs energy concept and chemical REDOX reaction that the ions are in higher entropy than their associated solid crystal’s form, and therefore they have higher potential energy. The key problem is obviously to separate these free ions in separate subspaces according to its charge, since this separation will create electrical potential difference between them. The ions are essentially electrons carrier and therefore despites they are moving with random velocity magnitude and direction, the external observer will observe an increasing electric charge due to free ions influx. This separation and migration can be performed by a rather strong electric field created by a special varnish insulated wire grid, VIWG. It will be shown that the energy expenditure for the liberation of ions from hydrates structure containment and migrate them to separate subspaces is similar to energy activation for the oxidation exothermal process, which requires only marginal external energy. Thus the energy gain is 250 kJoule/kg standard seawater, which is only 0.55% of the fuel value of 1kg Texas’ crude oil, U.S.A. Unlike thermal energy conversion, this system may has 95% efficiency, since all rotating machines are eliminated. With this efficency, the “priceless” seawater feedstock leads to the electric energy tariff which can be as low as 30% of the current one. In addition, this system provides with a number of significant comparative and competitive advantages compare to any known energy generation technology today, a.o.: zero pollution process, significant by products (fresh water, hydrogen gas, pure solid crystal atoms precipates) renewable since the availabilty of seawater feedstock is unlimited, scalable, modular, small foot-print, co-generation of Sodium/Chlorine fuel cell, and table salt (NaCl), and conventioanl hydrogen/oxygen fuel cell. It can be modified as power house for any kind of ship, as small as traditional fishing vessel to ocean liner. </p><p><strong>Keywords</strong>: Gibbs free energy, REDOX, hydrates, zero polution, fuel cell, scalable, modular </p><p> </p>

Abstract:
Affine transform is to describe the same target at different viewpoints to obtain the relationship between images of approximate model. Affine invariant feature extraction plays an important role in object recognition and image registration. Firstly, the definition of polar radius integral transform (PRIT) is put forward by means of the characterization of affine transform mapping straight line into straight line, where PRIT computes the integral along the polar radius direction and converts images into closed curves which keep the same affine transform with original images. Secondly, in order to extract affine invariant feature, an affine invariant feature extraction algorithm is also given based on PRIT. The proposed algorithm can be used to combine contour-based methods with region-based methods. It has some advantages of fewer amounts of computations and feasibility of feature extraction for objects with several components. Finally, the capability of anti-noise (Gaussian noise, salt and pepper noise) of PRIT is discussed. The simulation experiment results show that PRIT can effectively extract the affine invariant features, but also the low order PRIT has very strong robustness to noise.

Abstract:
The commodification of tourism includes the production and dissemination of words and images used to sell experiences. Tourism marketers use highly visible assurances that the experiences available are pleasurable, safe and convenient. These assurances are projected into a promotion-oriented front region. However, fine print terms and conditions – the rules that define the rights and obligations of tourism providers and consumers – occupy a back region that, in part, runs counter to the impressions fostered in the front region. Tourism marketing, it is argued, involves two mutually supportive domains that drive the sale of tourism: conspicuous (front region) words and images as well as inconspicuous (back region) fine print. A more comprehensive conceptualization of tourism marketing should consider the functions performed by the fine print. The four Ps typically associated with the marketing mix – product, price, promotion and place – are used for the purpose of organizing the analysis of the complexly crafted small type that is often hidden in plain sight but sometimes receives highly publicized scrutiny within a media-generated front region. Fine print terms and conditions (whether successfully obfuscated or the subject of a media expose) are responsible for creating a ‘stipulation surplus’, money earned or saved via the imposition of restrictions. The marketing of tourism involves the making of front region promises tempered by the imposition of back region parameters.

AbstractThe conductance of Nal and Et4NI in methanol-acetonitrile and methanol-water mixtures was measured at 25 ± 0.005 °C for the whole range of the solvent compositions, the salt molarity ranging from 5 • 10-5 up to 1 • 10-2. Several equations describing the influence of the salt concentration on the equivalent conductance are examined and the Fuoss-Hsia equation with the Fernandez-Prini parameters is found to be the most appropriate one for systems with weak ionic association. Variations with the solvent composition of the limiting equivalent conductance, the distance between ions forming ion pairs and the association constant are discussed. Nonmonotonous changes of the association constant are concluded to be a feature of microheterogenous systems.

Abstract:
Purpose In promotional ads that contain both the Regular Price and Sale Price information, this paper aims to investigate whether changing the font sizes of these two prices has an effect on how consumers process the ad message. The authors use acquisition-transaction utility perspective to identify key differences in mechanisms invoked by the larger font size of the Regular Price vs that of the Sale Price. Design/methodology/approach Study 1 uses eye-tracking apparatus to study subjects’ responses to a full-color, realistic-looking ad for a digital camera. Study 2 uses a survey questionnaire to gauge subjects’ responses to a similar print ad. The font sizes of Regular Price and Sale price were manipulated while keeping all the other elements of the ad the same. Subjects were undergraduate students who participated in the study for a small incentive. Findings The authors find that making the relative font size of Regular Price bigger invokes a transaction-utility mechanism where customers’ attention is focused on the savings that can be had using the promotion. A bigger font size of Sale Price invokes an acquisition-utility mechanism that draws on the customers’ value consciousness. Research limitations/implications The use of student subjects and only one product category in the experiments may limit the generalizability of the study’s findings. Practical implications In print ads, managers predominantly use a bigger font size for the Sale Price. This study suggests that the choice of a bigger font size should really be driven by the objective of the promotion: a bigger font size for Sale Price is advised if the objective is to take an acquisition utility approach, whereas a bigger font size for Regular Price is advised for using a transaction utility approach. Originality/value This study is the first attempt at using an acquisition-transaction utility perspective for understanding the use of relative font sizes in the context of price promotions.

ArgumentScholars of modern Chinese publishing and book culture focus on the dramatic transformations that took place in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: the new technologies that enabled “mass” printing and the development of “modern” genres of print. They often neglect the fact that xylography remained a working technology through much of the Republican period and even into the People's Republic of China. Here I examine the continued use of woodblock printing and the continuing popularity of “traditional” textual genres from two perspectives. First, from a “bottom up” perspective, I examine the production and sale of woodblock texts in rural markets, often in the face of efforts by both the Republic and the People's Republic to prohibit their use. Second, from a perspective from the top, I consider the deliberate choices made by the government, some elite book collector-publishers, and Daoist and Buddhist devotees to print certain works xylographically.

Abstract:
Alasdair Mann, the noted scholar of book culture in early modern Scotland, has suggested that a significant change had occurred in Scotland's relationship with the printed word by the late seventeenth century. This study sets out to explain how the interregnum served as a ‘watershed’ during which a consumer demand was created for popular print and how this in turn necessitated a significant increase in the production and distribution of printed material. Beginning with the sale of the press and patent of Evan Tyler to the London Stationers’ Company in 1647, the article charts the key factors that transformed Scotland's printing industry from the production of official declarations and works for foreign markets to the production of polemical texts for a Scottish audience. These developments also witnessed publication of the first serial news journal and the growth of a competitive market for up-to-date printed news. More than just an anomaly that flourished during a decade of occupation, these fundamental changes altered Scotland by introducing the large-scale consumption of chapbooks and printed ephemera, thereby initiating the nation's enduring print culture.

The drawings in question were by the Englishman William Young Ottley and the Dutchmen David Pierre Giottin Humbert de Superville and Hcndrik Voogd. I confine my remarks to the latter, who lived in Rome from 1788 until his death in 1839. The drawings come from the bequest of the Milan art-lover Giuseppe Bossi, with whom Voogd had a good business relationship. Discussing a signed drawing by Voogd, Toesca attributed 21 other drawings to him. The signature on the Venetian sheet is not the only proof of Voogd's authorship. Further evidence is provided by the circumstance that it is a preliminary study for a worked-up wash drawing in Hamburg (Kunsthalle) and also that it was preceded by a sketch in the Amsterdam Historical Museum. The topographical particulars of these three drawings arc discussed here. The attribution of the other 21 drawings is made 'dubitativamente' by Toesca. In my opinion her doubts are justified. Neither stylistically nor technically do they bear a resemblance to the rest of Voogd's oeuvre. The fact that the motifs (landscapes, cattle, studies of trees and plants) do occur in Voogd's work probably led to the attribution. The back of one of the drawings is inscribed 'Londonio'. The sale catalogue of Bossi's bequest (1818) lists both the Voogd drawing and work by Londonio. Francesco Londonio (1723-1783) was a Milan engraver and draughtsman who is chiefly known for his prints. Various print rooms in Europe possess work by him. It appears that the drawings attributed to Voogd are really preliminary studies by Londonio which he used for his oeuvre of prints. Indeed, some of the motifs in a series of etchings in the Rijksprentenkabinet in Amsterdam derive from the Venetian drawings. I therefore conclude that the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice own only one (signed) drawing by Hendrik Voogd, purchased by Bossi personally from the artist during his second visit to Rome (1810), and that the name of the true artist - Francesco Londonio - was lost when the sheets were removed from the original collector's albums.

Abstract:
On several occasions during the late 1860s, the novelist Harriet Beecher Stowe exhorted readers to adorn their homes with chromolithographs, color prints which reproduced original oil-paintings or, less often, depicted images created specifically for the print medium. In her 1869 domestic advice manual, The American Woman's Home, co-authored with her sister Catharine Beecher, Stowe described chromolithographs (or “chromos,” as they were commonly called) as essential components of a properly embellished home interior. In proposing a hypothetical budget devoted to parlor furnishings, the authors recommended that almost one-fourth of the total be allocated to lithographic reproductions of “really admirable pictures” by some of “America's best artists.” Stowe's advocacy of chromos also appeared in the promotional publications of L. Prang & Company, one of the country's largest publishers of these images. The short-lived quarterly Prang's Chromo: A Journal of Popular Art (published in five issues from January 1868 to April 1869) printed a letter in which Stowe thanked Louis Prang for sending her several free chromolithographs. After praising the “beautiful objects,” Stowe concluded her note with the kind of testimonial Prang no doubt had been seeking when he sent her the complimentary items: “Be assured I shall neglect no opportunity of proving my sympathy with your so charming and beautiful mission, and bringing it to everyone's notice, so far as I can.” And, though it is impossible to know what exact role Stowe's promotions played in the overall sale of chromos, it is clear that she aligned herself with a hot commodity: from 1840 to 1900, chromolithographs in America sold by the millions.

Abstract:
Marketing means the strategies and tactics an organization undertakes for attracting consumers to promote the buying or selling of a product or service. Active marketing is about receiving messages from potential buyers to create ways to influence their purchasing decisions. Advertising is one of the most prominent marketing strategies to promote products to consumers. It is well known that advertisement has a significant impact on the sale of certain goods or services. In this paper, we consider two mediums of advertisement, such as Facebook (which is an online medium) and Newspaper (which is a printed medium). We consider a dataset representing the advertising budget (in hundreds of US dollars) of an electronic company and the sales of that company. We apply the quantitative research approach, and the data which are used in this research are secondary data. For analysis purposes, we consider a statistical tool called simple linear regression modeling. To check the significance of the advertising on sale, definite statistical tests are applied. Based on the findings of this research, it is observed that advertising has a significant impact on sales. It is also showed that spending money on advertising through Facebook has better sales than newspapers. The finding of this research shows that the use of computer-based technologies and online mediums has a brighter future for advertising. Furthermore, a new statistical model is introduced using the Z family approach. The proposed model is very interesting and possesses heavy-tailed properties. Finally, the applicability of the proposed model is illustrated by considering the financial dataset.

Abstract:
A series of 62 fact sheets on a variety of topics related to vegetable gardening were constructed in WordPerfect and, using a series of macros and styles, were modified to a standard format and printed to a file for storage. Sheets were organized into a heirarchal menu so they could be copied to the printer upon request using only DOS commands. A portable laptop computer and a Hewlett Packard Portable DeskJet printer was used to print files at such remote locations as nurseries/garden centers, shopping malls, fairs, and public events where Master Gardener volunteers set up and operated the equipment. Single sheets could be printed in about 20 seconds. At garden shows with larger attendance, a HP Laser 4 printer and a standard computer were used to print fact sheets at about 5 seconds each. Fact sheets consisted of text and tables but no graphics were included. Most sheets were single pages although several were 2 pages in length. Additional information was available from a comprehensive for-sale publication sold or available for ordering on-site. Costs of custom printed fact sheets compared to standard printing will be discussed.
