Full textThe dissertation entitled "Studies on the Latin Wisdom of Solomon" deals with textual criticism, textual history and the comparison of texts, namely with regard to the Vulgate tradition but also with regard to the other Latin traditions of Wis. First, it is brought out to what extent and why the three modern critical editions of the Vulgate text of Wis differ in their reconstructions of its archetype. Moreover, the differing readings in the respective recension lines are evaluated. Subsequently, the question is addressed for which reason a qualitatively rather deficient Latin text form of Wis has found its way into the Biblia Vulgata. Initially, the Vulgate tradition of Wis is shown to have emerged in the fifth century AD in Rome; based on this, the success of this text form is ascribed not to a purposeful decision but to an interdependence and an interrelation between the use of this text by catholics in Rome and the Roman book production. Eventually, by means of the translation of the Greek terms athanasía, aphtharsía, dikaiosýne and nómos and their corresponding adjectives, the Vulgate text of Wis is demonstrated to affiliate to its Greek and Latin model texts closely but to feature peculiarities due to its translation method as well. In the Vulgate text, textual references are dissolved in comparison to the Greek text, and the eschatological sketches of the Greek text appear to be somewhat reduced in the Vulgate text of Wis. In addition, it becomes apparent that the Vulgate text of Wis has arisen – unlike the original Greek text – not from a Jewish but from a Christian milieu. All in all, a better contextualisation of the Vulgate tradition of Wis regarding the other Latin traditions, its historical environment and its Greek Vorlage is achieved.

Full textThis thesis is based on ethnographic fieldwork in Solomon Islands capital, Honiara (four months), and in the rural Lau Lagoon, Malaita Province (eight months). It examines how the Solomon Islands state, marked by a recent history of civil conflict and foreign military intervention, becomes visible in the everyday lives of rural and, to a lesser degree, urban non-elites; and how this visibility affects non-elite perceptions of the state as legitimate, dominant governing system. I propose that to understand to what extent and how the Solomon Islands state is integrated into everyday routines it is necessary to focus on mundane encounters with the state, its infrastructures and representatives as well as available alternatives; and to do so by prioritizing the perspective of the non-elites rather than the perspective of the disciplining state and state-focused members of (an urban) civil society. My findings highlight that the Solomon Islands state is visible as a disruptive force. As a result non-elites continue to defy state-based unification and instead seek relative autonomy from the state by emphasizing the dominance and legitimacy of village-centric governance. This quest for autonomy is, however, increasingly curtailed by dependency on foreign foods and goods, and therein by a dependency on the state as primary globally-recognized legitimate mediator of economic relations

Full textThe achievement of the Millennium Development Goals including poverty alleviation, food security together with biodiversity conservation is seriously challenged in coral reef regions. In this context, the role played by small-scale fisheries is critical, especially in the sub-tropical South West Pacific region. Using the Solomon Islands as a case-study, the present thesis aims to identify management strategies that ensure the sustainability and resilience of both fisheries and the underlying marine biodiversity, accounting for macro and micro-level ecological and economic drivers. To do so, we develop several bio-economic dynamic models that account for multi-fleets and multiple coral reef species, holothurians as well as skipjack tuna, a pelagic resource that can be caught inshore using Fishing Aggregative Devices (FADs). Parameters of the models are calibrated using both local data from the Solomon Islands and relevant literature on reef ecosystems. The choice of the fishing effort as control variable in the system allows us to account for the flexibility of the local customary marine tenure systems frequently found in the Pacific. Scenarios and projections derived from the model are compared using viability criteria. The co-viability of the system is satisfied by balancing ecological and economic constraints that are defined by biodiversity conservation, food security and minimum cash requirements. In addition we propose to measure the resilience of the system through the concept of time-of-crisis. The research points out to a series of important results: first, scenarios analysis highlights the need to adjust fishing effort in favour of the tuna resource in order to secure co-viability at the 2050 horizon. Second, simulations and game theory are used to show how cooperation amongst fishers with a particular fish catch allocation can foster the viability and resilience of the whole system. Third, while accounting for ecological and economic uncertainties in the dynamics and state of the model, the model shows on how FADs can play a major role for the viability and resilience of the small-scale fishery. Overall these different results emphasize the importance of ecosystem-based management approach, and the need for the carefully planned development of small-scale tuna fisheries

Full textThe Low Latitude Western Boundary Currents (LLWBCs) of the Southwest Pacific establish a major connection between the subtropics and the equator. They are believed to play a key role in heat and mass budgets of the equatorial Pacific and cross, as a final passage, the Solomon Sea southeast of Papua New Guinea. As part of a France-U.S. collaboration, two oceanographic multidisciplinary cruises were conducted in the Solomon Sea during contrasting trade wind sea- sons, in July-August 2012 and March 2014 to characterize currents, water properties and their modifications. During July-August 2012, the season of strong southeasterly trade winds, an in- tense flow of 36 ± 3 Sv from the surface down to 1000 m is entering the Solomon Sea, that falls by 70% to 11 ± 3 Sv in March 2014 when the winds over the sea are weaker. The LLWBCs are associated with distinct water mass properties across the Solomon Sea that can be tracked along their pathways, and undergo significant modifications between the southern entrance and the northern exits of the sea. Below 2000 m, the Upper Circumpolar Deep Water (UCDW) has been traced from the New Caledonia Trench and the South Fiji Basin into the Solomon Sea, associ- ated with a volume transport of 2-3 ± 2 Sv. Preliminary analyses of the mooring array in each major exit channel indicate large time variability of the LLWBCs in both =intensity and vertical extent, where thermocline pathways vary in most cases, coherently and in phase at intraseasonal to seasonal time scales

Full textThis thesis is presented in two volumes: the first is divided into three sections: - the first section covers the history of the tradition of the text, with special reference to the different editions of the odes questions of authorship and their origin. The poetic and prophetic style of the odes is particularly stressed. This is directly followed by the translation of the forty-two odes into French. - the second section deals with Christology of the odes from the soteriological point of view. There then follows an analysis of the figure of the son, in which a distinction is made between son and son. This Christology may lead us to suppose that there are, within the odes some traces of Docetism. - the third section deals with the odes in their spiritual environment parallels are drawn between the odes and Qumran. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between the odes and the johanni8ne tradition, and especially the "dissidents" mentioned in the first epistle of St John. The odes also reflect a gnostic environment without themselves being of gnostic character. This study is followed by a select bibliography; the text of the odes in syriac; and two concordances; the first relating to the syriac text and the second to the French

Full textThis enquiry evaluates the ideas and practices of the myth and the cult of solomon in the muslim world. The first part deals with an analysis of the hagiographic evolution of the "solomon myth" in the bible and the koran in addition to the post-koranic literature represented in both the popular and literary spheres. As an introduction to ethnographical field work, there is a list of the places and countries upon which solomon left an imprint. The second part examines the embodiment of the myth of solomon and its transformation into cultural practices. Through three field work sites the study surveys the socio-cultural construction of "solomonic space" : 1. The 'throne of solomon' at osh (kirghizistan former ussr), 2. The 'solomon bath' at hammam melouane (algeria), and 3. 'the flags of salomon among the yezidis' (upper syria and, by extension, of kurdistan) this field work brings the question centers analytically on the ritual aspects of these shrines the last part of the study seeks to answer the question of solomon's identity. Going back to the koran this research elicits the prophetic dimension of solomon to reexamine solomon's multi-cultural significance in the islamic tradition

Full textOver the past century we have witnessed and benefitted from a technological boom. Issues ranging from how science should progress to how it should be used continually gain prominence in public debates. This raises the question: what is the ideal relationship between the state and the scientific institutions? I attempt to explain how Francis Bacon, one of the founders of the modern era, answers this with his New Atlantis. Bacon’s realpolitik nature allows the New Atlantis to achieve what very few utopias can, actualization. By looking at New Atlantis’s fictionalized country, Bensalem, we can see Bacon’s ideal relationship between the scientific institution (Salomon’s House) and the state. First, I examine the state and Salomon’s House independently of each other, and then how they interact. Eventually, Bacon shows us that a strong and independent scientific institution is necessary to establish perpetuity to a well ordered state

Full textThe consequences of muslim conquest on the iberic peninsula has been considerable because its influence was generalised. Despite that influence, judaism remained in fidelity to the judaic babylonian and oriental tradition. It's only begining in the xth century that the diaspora underwent a great revolution in the intellectual life. This tangible reality is evoked in poetic work of salomon ibn gabirol born probably in malaga (1021- 1056-?or -1058). The poetic work of our great poet offers us the example of a thought of diverse sources :poetic ,philosophical and both jewish and arabic mysticism. The discovery of those three sources is the aim of our research. For the mystics love of god is knowledge -this quest is based on three ways according to ibn gabirol: the way of wisdom, of purification and finally, of light. Ibn gabirol, aspires to the love of god and invites man to himpelf by the mean of ascetism, humility and prayer in this spiritual journey the fear the love of god are two fundamental steps among others such as repent, consciousness exam, recouncement, hope and the invocation of god. Effectively, ibn gabirol doesn't stop to sing them throught his poetry, as the muslim mystics. The poetic texts analysed have allowed us at times, if not to answer, at least to surround the divergent and incident point between the muslim and the jewish culture

The analysis of Charlotte Salomon s work is a cartographic path of the application of Alfred Wolfsohn s ideas. We propose the reading of this artistic text for the course of a possible cartography that exposes the voice as compositional and aggregating unit of the various senses in the expressive synthesis that is perceivable in its imagistic orality. In the process of transcription of Alfred Wolfsohn s manuscript to the work of Charlotte Salomon s, the voice drives new ways of sensitive communication, beyond the meanings of verbal language, seen as it gives visibility to the flux of emotions, potentiating the relationship between art and life, body and environment, education and communication. In the reading of Charlotte Salomon s work and Alfred Wolfsohn s manuscript, there is a pedagogic proposal that takes place through the voice and which is not present in each individual work. Conferring aspects of both works, a study of the voice is delineated as a path to a technique that tries for the transit of emotions. The voice appears as mediation of the exterior world and human interior and potentiates the translation of the experienced into work of art and which can be read so as to concur to the comprehension of the semiosis that take shape in this artistic text. The goals are: (i) to intersemioticaly translate, through Charlotte Salomon s work, the legacy of Alfred Wolfsohn s from the perspective of the relationship between communication, visualities and intersubjectivities, in a dialoguing action between the visual work and the manuscript, seeking (ii) to introduce an analysis of Charlotte Salomon s work and Alfred Wolfsohn s legacy into the academic medium under the light of the culture semiotics. From many layers and semiotically heterogeneous, capable of entering complex relationships with the environment cultural context as well as the reader, the paper is no longer an elementary message displaying the ability of condensing information. It acquires memory and so, in the memory of a Latin-American reality, the artistic text reforms itself and gains other meanings, which will uncover a possible comprehension of the voice as a pedagogical path. The transcreation from one text to another is leitmotiv of this investigation

Full textIn the southwest Pacific, thermocline waters connecting the tropics to the equator via western boundary currents transit throught the Solomon Sea. For this reason, this poorly known sea may modulate the tropical Pacific climate. In this thesis, we implemented a high-resolution model of the Solomon Sea which enabled us to characterize the regional oceanic circulations in the thermocline layer, and their variabilities. We notably showed that part of the New Guinea Coastal Undercurrent waters join the New Ireland Coastal Undercurrent, which partly retroflects to the Equatorial Undercurrent, providing the most direct western noundary-equator connection. The Solomon Sea western boundary currents' seasonal variability results from the combination of equatorial and of Rossby waves dynamics. A lagrangian analysis of the model results enabled us to characterize the pathways followed by the water masses transiting through the Solomon Sea to join the equatorial Pacific, and their transformations. We showed that strong diapycnal mixing occurs and is responsible for a downward heat transfer and for tje erosion of the maximum of salinity of the upper thermocline. The analysis of available and of reprocessed altimetric data enabled us to study the seasonal and interannual variabilities of the circulation in the Solomon Sea. We notably underlined the intensification of the western boundary currents during El Niño events, which counter balance the depletion of the warm pool in the equatorial western Pacific

Full textThis thesis explores the experiences of villagers in the rural Lau Lagoon, Malaita Province, Solomon Islands, as they adopt mobile phones. I discuss how the adoption of mobile phone technology affects and is affected by existing information-communication technologies; how and to what extent Lau adoption of mobile phones is circumscribed by the marginal place of the Lau in globalized capitalist economies; and I elaborate on the main controversies that surround the adoption and use of mobile phones, local conceptualizations of how digital technologies work, their morality, what they are meant to be used for and for what they are not to be used. Specifically, I focus on the two primary functions of mobile phones in Gwou’ulu: the mobile phone as (1) telephone and (2) as movie-watching device. Theoretically, I rework approaches to technography for an investigation of digital technology and media consumption with a focus on mobile phones—in 2014 of the approximate 250 adults living in Gwou’ulu, 100 owned a personal mobile phone and many more shared a mobile phone. Technography, or ethnographies of technology, offers a strategic multi-disciplinary combination that examines the historical, economic, political, religious, environmental and material conditions that constitute the realm of possibilities that constrain but also facilitate particular sets of choices made by individuals in response to the adoption of new technologies such as mobile phones. My methods for data collection are a combination of participant observation and open ended interviews on individual mobile phone usage. My findings show village life in a transition period of technological and social digitization. They highlight how, in the Lau Lagoon, mobile phones shift information-communication technologies (ICTs) from the public to the private realm and how an individualized consumption of mobile phones fuels uncertainties as to if and how mobile phones, as telephone or as movie-watching devices, transform social relationships among village residents as well as relationships between villagers and their urban relatives. I argue that mobile phones and their diverse functions—from telephony to movie player to calculator—are best described as super-compositional objects because they encompass and agitate so many of the social relationships and cultural values that are otherwise the defining features of a particular group of peoples in a particular place
