Lambert, Marcia, and John Turner. Commercial Forest Plantations on Saline Lands. CSIRO Publishing, 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643100817.

Full text
Abstract:
This book provides the information that will allow users to recover salt-degraded land with selected plantation timbers and ultimately to make a profit. The authors have drawn on their own experiences plus material from Australia, India, California and Israel where similar saline soil conditions occur. The authors also bring their extensive work in forest biotechnology to the book. The primary species of interest are in the genus Eucalyptus although other species, notably conifers, are referred to. Issues involved in defining the characteristics of sites where plantations may be established and their special management requirements are discussed. Options are presented for the selection and development of appropriate genotypes plus associated management practices. Monitoring of plantations is shown to be a vital management issue. The work includes a chapter on environmental benefits which will broaden the appeal beyond forest managers, extension officers and students of forestry to companies which produce CO2 but which have no prior knowledge of forestry.

Abstract:
Chapter 9 discusses two questions: first, whether the explanation for declining trade salience is specific to the American experience; and second, what conditions in the U.S. could change to revive the salience of trade policy. To address the first question, the chapter compares trade salience patterns in the U.S. and eight other similar advanced industrial countries (AICs). It provides a comparison of beliefs about the benefits of trade the 9 identified AICs; analysis of parties’ position taking and trade’s salience in the party platforms of those countries since 1920, and two comparative case studies of the relationship between party position taking on trade the varying trade salience in Canada and the United Kingdom. The chapter also provides additional detail on the American experience of higher trade salience surrounding the debate and subsequent passage of North American Free Trade Agreement. The chapter concludes with implication for the future of trade policy, electoral politics, and applies the lessons to Donald Trump’s success in the 2016 Republican primary.

Fischer, John Martin. Responsibility and Omissions. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190683450.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
Mark Ravizza and John Martin Fischer have previously offered an account of moral responsibility for omissions. On this account, the conditions for such responsibility are parallel in an important way to the conditions for moral responsibility for actions: that is, neither responsibility for actions nor responsibility for omissions requires access to alternative possibilities. This helps in the semicompatibilist project (i.e., to show that moral responsibility is compatible with causal determinism). This chapter seeks to address some salient critiques of the account proposed by Ravizza and Fischer, especially in recent work by Randolph Clarke, Carolina Sartorio, and Philip Swenson.

Vanderschraaf, Peter. Justice as Mutual Advantage? Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199832194.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
Necessary and sufficient conditions are proposed for characterizing the general theory of justice as mutual advantage. Justice as mutual advantage has a distinguished history, but is thought to be false because according to this theory vulnerable members of society are apparently owed no benefits of justice. A repeated Provider-Recipient game model shows by example that justice as mutual advantage systems can require that the vulnerable receive benefits, refuting the Vulnerability Objection. Conditions for defining the community of inclusion in justice as mutual advantage systems are proposed in terms of salience. A justice as mutual system is defined as a system of conventions for sharing the cooperative surplus generated from compliance with these conventions that is Baseline Consistent or stable with respect to possible renegotiation in case the community experiences certain changes in their circumstances.

Chamberlain, Samuel R. Phenomenology and Epidemiology of Trichotillomania. Edited by Jon E. Grant and Marc N. Potenza. Oxford University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780195389715.013.0039.

Full text
Abstract:
Trichotillomania is a psychiatric disorder characterized by recurrent hair pulling, leading to hair loss and functional impairment. This chapter reviews the phenomenology and epidemiology of trichotillomania, and considers its relationship with putative obsessive-compulsive spectrum conditions and other body-focused repetitive behaviors. Salient animal models of the disorder, along with findings in human patients using neuroimaging and cognitive probes, are summarized. A brain-based model of trichotillomania is formulated, focusing on affect dysregulation, addiction, and impulse dyscontrol. Finally, the chapter flags cardinal questions for the attention of future clinical and research scrutiny.

Ricketts, Mónica. Merit and Its Subversive New Roles. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190494889.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter analyzes “merit” as one of the organizing concepts of the Bourbon program of reform. Merit was no longer understood as a condition or status resulting from someone’s ancestry and pure blood but rather as talent, skill, and good training. The text examines the many writings that propagated this idea in state-sponsored publications, the press, academies and salons, and in policies. It reflects on the contradictions the crown faced when promoting a meritocracy in places organized around differences of birth and race. Subversive interpretations arose from the expectations the application of this concept awoke and the frustration of its often weak implementation.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter, found in the chest pain section of the book, provides a succinct synopsis of a key study examining the diagnosis of acute pulmonary embolism. This summary outlines the study methodology and design, major results, limitations and criticisms, related studies and additional information, and clinical implications. The study showed that a simple protocol involving clinical criteria (the modified Wells criteria), D-dimer testing, and CT can safely and effectively exclude acute pulmonary embolism in patients who are clinically suspected of the condition. In addition to outlining the most salient features of the study, a clinical vignette and imaging example are included in order to provide relevant clinical context.

Full text
Abstract:
To understand the emergence and success of antisemitism in the late 19th and 20th centuries, the significance of the centuries-long heritage of hostility between Christians and Jews needs to be recognized. This conflict over beliefs led to the institutionalization within medieval European Christendom of the Jews as a protected minority. ‘The burden of the past’ considers the legacy of Jewish–Christian relations in creating the phenomenon of antisemitism and the stereotypical image of Jews in the minds of non-Jewish people in Europe. Anti-Jewish prejudice was a necessary condition of antisemitism’s success, but the circumstances in which an atavistic prejudice became the basis for a modern political movement were also salient.

Md Dahlan, Nuarrual Hilal. Comparative housing sale and purchase agreements under the Malaysia, Singapore and New South Wales housing laws. UUM Press, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.32890/9789675311666.

Full text
Abstract:
Abandoned housing projects is one of the major problems in housing industry in Peninsular Malaysia. The reasons leading to this problem are many. This catastrophe has caused multifarious problems to the stakeholders, particularly the purchasers who become the aggrieved parties. To date, there is no effective and once-and-for-all means to face the problems of abandoned housing projects. One of the factors which causes abandonment of housing projects in Peninsular Malaysia, is the lack of political will on the part of the government to adopt an affirmative better housing delivery system such as the full build then sell system and the introduction of a housing development insurance to face the problems of housing abandonment. This book provides in-depth analysis of the terms and conditions of the statutory standard sale and purchase agreements as enshrined in Schedules G, H, I and J of the Housing Development (Control and Licensing) Regulations 1989.The objective of this book, among others, is to identify the weaknesses of the terms of the agreements, if any, which may have contributed to the problem of abandoned housing projects and their consequential troubles. As comparative analyses, the terms and conditions of the sale and purchase agreements as applicable and enforced in the Republic of Singapore and New South Wales, Australia, are chose. The purpose of these comparative analyses is to find the terms and conditions in these foreign jurisdictions agreements which can be learned and adopted in the statutory standard sale and purchase agreements (Schedules G, H, I and J).It is also for the betterment of the Malaysian housing industry as a whole, and to protect the interests of the stakeholders, in particular the purchasers, as against the problems of housing abandonment and its consequences.

Grau, Josep M., and Esteban Poch. Pathophysiology and management of rhabdomyolysis. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199600830.003.0355.

Full text
Abstract:
Rhabdomyolysis is a potentially life-threatening syndrome characterized by the breakdown of skeletal muscle. It is associated with myalgia, muscle tenderness, swelling, and/or stiffness, accompanied by weakness and raised levels of creatine kinase (CK), myoglobin, phosphate and potassium, sometimes with acute kidney injury (AKI). There are multiple causes of this syndrome, traumatisms and myotoxic effect of drugs being the most frequent in developed countries. The pathophysiology involves direct trauma, as well as energy (ATP) depletion with disruption of sarcolemma integrity and muscle destruction. The sequestration of plasma water leads to hypovolaemic shock, while the release of muscle content, mainly myoglobin and potassium lead to the most severe complications of this syndrome, acute kidney injury/hyperkalaemia. The kidney injury is driven both by renal ischaemia due to vasoconstriction and to the toxic effects of myoglobin. The local oedema produced by the release of muscle content remains trapped within the fascia and can lead to compartment syndrome. Volume repletion with saline is essential to avoid hypovolaemic shock and acute kidney injury (AKI). With respect to compartment syndrome, close monitoring of clinical signs and compartment pressures is essential, since it can evolve to a surgical emergency. The prognosis of rhabdomyolysis is determined by age, baseline conditions and, most importantly, whether or not severe AKI develops.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter summarizes the main arguments of the book and offers an explanation of why a seemingly successful insurgent social movement might be able to mobilize sympathy and support for its agenda but fail to force state authorities to address its demands. The conclusion is that despite relative failures, through protest mobilization and the support of solidaristic social movement organizations, insurgent social movements like the Zapatista movement may be able to survive as salient actors within a new democratic regime and as iconic figures among other social movements around the world. This chapter also compares the fate of the Zapatista movement to the outcomes of other social, indigenous, and guerrilla movements within different transitional conditions and offer some expectations for the future of Mexico’s democracy.
