Holstein, John. "Les grands saints successeurs de Saint Patrick en Irlande." Rennes 2, 1990. http://www.theses.fr/1990REN20011.
Full textOften characterized by their widespread culture, their prolific literary works as well as their distinct originality, the early medieval Irish have never ceased to intrigue historians of Celtic Christianity. From the arrival of Sant Patrick in the fifth century up to the council of Cashel in the twelfth, Christian Ireland enjoyed the attributes of a highly unique civilization resulting from the union of both Celtic and Judaeo-Christian traditions. Using authentic legal and ecclesiastical documents in the Irish language, the author proposes a methodical investigation into the spiritual reality behind the golden age of Irish saints. This study has a twofold purpose: firstly to explore and analyse the ties between the early medieval Christian community and its mythological past, secondly to reveal the influence of these ties upon the evolution of Irish monasticism. Far from being exhaustive, the main objective of our thesis is to throw light on some of the least considered and often misunderstood aspects of medieval Ireland

Full textThis thesis has for aim to explore the problematic of the time within the reflections of St Augustine and St Thomas Aquinas that are both seen as a key link between the philosophical thought of the antiquity and the contemporary period. It will firstly analyze the theories developed by these two philosophers on the concept and the measure of the time, to give an answer to the question: has the time a reality and how to measure it?Through a deep analyze of the two philosophers’ corpus referentials, this study will try to determine if it is possible to find the answer in the changing, the motion, the succession, the duration, the moment and the present or if we rather have to see the time as a shape of the objective world or as a scheme of the apprehension depending on the subject. The first part of this work will answer the question whether the time reflects the properties of the objective world itself or those of the subjective world or might it be the result of the links we have with these two worlds. The second will analyze the problematic of the time between its origin and its end (the creation and the eternity). We will try to know if it is possible to show that the philosophical analysis of the time made by these two authors cannot be seen as an independent instant but a way to reconsider the subject of the time in a theology of creation and eternity. In a broad analysis of the four themes that are, the reality, the measure of the time, the creation and the eternity and some specifics and close concepts, we will determine if it is possible to say that there is an absolute gap between the time as a cosmic category and the time as a psychological one. We will show precisely if it is possible to say that the St Augustine and St Thomas Aquinas’s thoughts can be looked as two different theories, the one which sees the time as a subjective reality and allows St Augustine to be considered one of the most significant founders of the phenomenology of the time unlike St Thomas Aquinas who demonstrates the time's objective reality, in the continuity of the Aristotelian objectivity of the time

Full textTwo manuscripts are edited: bibl. Nat. , nouv. Acqu. Fr. 2100 and musee conde de chantilly, ms. 619. The edition is followed by a glossary (18p. ), notes (8p. ), the index of names and the index of the mystery parts. The introduction contains first the description and comparison of the two manuscripts. After a codicological study, follows a very close analysis of the text and then the comparison between the two manuscripts. The study of saint crispin and saint crispinian legend tries to find the origin of it and to follow its development around soissons: the study is based on toponymy and on the history of soissons abbeyes. The latin life of the saints is the most important source of the mystery plyas but they have been influenced too by other theatrical plays. The two mystery plays have been performed by the guilds of the shoemakers in 1443 in rouen and in 1458-1459 in paris. The study of the performance is based upon the text itself. A philological chapter (phonetic, morphology, syntax, vocabulary) and the study of the verses is the end of the first part

Full textBefore the gothic church - built between the 12th and the 16th centuries - was two pre-Romans buildings situated side by side. Artificially reunified, this construction was astonishing. It structure was composed of six irregulars parallels parts, which had different heights, and four longitudinal steps in the middle; the belfry wasn't in the center. This church was spacious and dark. It was damaged during the revolution and the edifice was built again - almost completely - during the 19th century. Then, it was been turned to the west side, broadly open on the city; the principal front is over hanged by a neogothic belfry. The church has some gothic vestiges (vault, columns) and beautiful stained glass window

Full textThe Saint-Michel monastery of Saint-Mihiel was founded by the SaintDenis abbey, on the request of King Pépin the Younger, after 755 and before 772, on the forested heights of the right bank of the river Meuse, at about 30 km south of Verdun. It was reinstalled before 824 on the edge of the Meuse and aggregated to the Saint Benedict order, reorganized by Saint Benedict d’Aniane on the request of the emperor Louis the Pious. In 954, the monastery is given as a dowry to the daughter of Hugh the Great who marries the Duke of Haute-Lorraine Frederick 1st. They are the ancestors of the Dukes of Bar, who also became the Dukes of Lorraine in the 15th century. The abbey remains linked to the Barrois until 1766, which is the date of attachment of the two duchies to France. It is one of the important Benedictine abbeys of the two dukedoms. It is part of the province of Lorraine of the Benedictine congregation of Saint-Vanne, created in 1604, which comprises about fifty monasteries in Champagne, Lorraine and Franche-Comté.The 17th century is a difficult period for the Lorraine and Barrois, involved in the terrible Thirty Years war from 1631 to 1661. The dukedoms and the Saint-Mihiel abbey recover from their ruins and get prepared for an 18th century that one could predict as a material, intellectual and spiritual blooming. What seems to testify, for the abbey, are its buildings that one can still admire in the 21th century, and particularly its magnificent library refurnished around 1775 and which still comprises over 6 000 books having belonged to the Benedictines. The reality is more balanced and complex if one gets interested in these religious figures from 1689, culmination of their spiritual and intellectual blooming, until 1790, year of the withdrawal of the religious orders in France. We are lucky to have their testimonies, the most important being the one of their scholarly librarian, from 1717 to 1756, Dom Ildefonse Catelinot

Full textIn the narrow area of Valle d'Aosta, in Italy, two different approaches to pilgrimage can be found: one is represented by local pilgrimages, attended by a community of devout constantly in touch with each other, the other one being international pilgrimages, composed by followers who meet for the first time when they board the bus that will take them towards the holy place. Among the latter, one of the most frequented lately is the one that brings the pilgrims towards the Virgin of Medjugorje, in Bosnia-Herzegovina. What are the differences we can find between these two different peregrinations ? Are the members of local pilgrimages the same who decide to meet a “foreign” Virgin Mary, which has not even been yet acknowledged by the Church ? Can this second devotion offer something more than the numerous places of worship located in the region ? Through the instruments of ethnographical analysis, Nora Demarchi tries to answer those questions, illustrating how the study of the religious pilgrimage phenomena can say something more about society in a broader sense

Full textThe author aims to highlight the characteristics which make the originality of the Storia del Sant Grasal (Story of the Holy Grail, 1380), the catalan version of the Queste del Saint Graal (Quest of the Holy Grail), compared to the french original text. The collation of this work with the versions of the Queste del Saint Graal - provided by editions pauphilet and the manuscript fr. 343 of the Bibliotheque Nationale de France - concurs with the view that the catalan adaptation stems from the reading of the french masterpiece, definitely cistercian in inspiration, by a 14th century franciscan cleric, deeply influenced by the millenarist ideas of Joachim de Flore and his followers. The thesis falls into three sections : I- historical background : matter of Britain in Catalonia (12th - 15th centuries). II- critical edition of the Storia del Sant Grasal in manuscript 79 sup. , ambrosium library Milano. III- Essay on the Storia del Sant Grasal, catalan version of the Queste del Sant Grasal

Full textThe history of religions traditionally turns the saints into god's successors. Thus, to the pagan god Volos, the cattle's god and Perun, the thunder god, would, in Russia, succeed saint Blasius, the cattle's protector, and saint Elijah, the thunder patron. Recent Russian studies represent these two almost unknown gods as the avatars of heroes of an Indo-European myth, the one of the thunder god running after the snake. The analysis of those studies from comparative mythology makes us have doubts about their results: we think we know nothing about Volos. His function as cattle's god would itself originate from the first Christian scolars who would in this way project on the god the function at the saint. In the same way, the features attributed to Perun would be nothing else than those of saint Elijah: thus, the saints are not the god's successors, but it's the gods who become the saints's successors. An analysis of the cult of the saints from the folklore invites us to see in the use of their names a language aiming at humanizing nature. This study concludes itself by a present theological interpretation of the cult of the saints. The "witnesses" could act as the martyrs then the saints did at their time in Christianism

Full textOur notion of rhythm must be distinguished from the classical conception, where it was an accessory componant in verse structure. Refering essentially to the organization of the discourse through and by which Saint-John Perse as a subject of utterance is being buit up, it is not restricted to one aspect of discourse, but encompasses all its elements. First of all, the relationship to the word must be probed into. Conceived as a semantic unity deprived of context and of any historical data, the word, here, is a fragment borrowed from a primeval discourse. But, more than the word, it is the organization of the syntax that is the main signifier of the text. .

Full textThis thesis called Augustinian prayer doesn't consist in an explanation about saint Augustine’s spirituality, but it investigates this spirituality according to three points of view straight linked themselves: linguistic, inter-subjective and ontological. Three questions are brought up: what is the part of prayer according to this Augustinian philosophy of expression in which linguistic sign is just an indication of sense and human power of speech remains stammering toward ineffable essence of god? Who is the real speaker in the relation of prayer? Augustinism developps a link of spiritual dialogue between human soul and god. But on another part, the philosophy of "interior magister" aims at dispossessing human subject off his own speaking so that praying becomes the echo, in soul, of an initial discourse, the expression by the verb of the essence of the father (this is praise), of the human fall as well (this is confession). The third question is straight involved: does prayer proceed only from the human subject's natural psychology, from his own affectivity and anguish, or does it belong to an ontological participation of soul to Trinitarian and hypostatic relation? By the way of this research about a particular type of discourse, the prayer, we aim at clearing up the articulation between theology of verb an philosophy of language in Augustinism

Our work of thesis consists in studying collectively these four saints (saint James, apostle and patron of Spain, saint Emilien of the Cogolla, saint Isidore of Seville and saint George) notably from the point of view of their representations, so textual as iconographic. On one hand, we intend to write an history of the Spanish military holiness since its previous origin and to draw the essential characteristics of it. On the other hand, the purpose is to show, by the prism of the representations, that these saints are saints sui generis, anchored in a specific territory but also in an History, and that spaces and elements of historic context widely influenced the treatment which authors and artists reserved them

Full textThe objective of this study is to analyze the orientalist discourse of Saint Simon and the Saint-Simonians on the base of the analyzes of the modern orientalism by Edward W. Said that criticize the understanding of the Other whiche, based on the notion of exteriority, tends to fix the identity and the nature of the Other in various categories formed in his own culture. Firstly, in order to understand the problematic of Said, this study tries to examine the discussions of the Orientalism and their limits whose analyzes are assumed, in this work, to contribute to better understand the discourse of the saint-simoniens. In the second part of this work, it is important to regard the ideas of Saint-Simon as that of social transition and to examine his discourse which is part of a eurocentric perspective on the history of civilizations. Finally, the study tries to analyze the discourse of the Saint-Simonians about the Orient, which consists of various representations inspired by their belief in the progress of the history and in the reconciliation of the Orient and the Occident by their Saint-Simonian doctrine. These representations show the same part of the limits of the expansionist vision of the Orient as the orientalism of the period even though they have their own characteristics that are different from those of the dominant orientalist discourse of the period: eurocentrism, lack of access to the oriental society, legitimacy of the occupancy etc. This work intends to show that discourse of the saint-simoniens on the Orient is related more to themselves than the Orientals considering that the Orient is generally excluded from their discourse on the Orient
