Abstract:
The purpose of this report is to investigate the need for and purposes of parental and community involvement in an Outer Torres Strait Island school, namely Saibai State School, and to explore and report on some of the approaches to community involvement that we have trialled in our school. If a school is aiming to educate its students for an active role in the society, then it is vital that the school be a living, active part of that society. It is unrealistic for teachers to assume that the school can stay separated from the community but still educate its students in a real and meaningful way.

Abstract:
Novel flavivirus isolates from mosquitoes collected in northern Australia were analysed by partial genomic sequencing, monoclonal antibody-binding assays and polyclonal cross-neutralization tests. Two isolates were found to be antigenically distinct from, but related to, viruses of the Kokobera virus complex, which currently contains Kokobera (KOKV) and Stratford (STRV) viruses. Nucleotide sequence comparison of two separate regions of the genome revealed that an isolate from Saibai Island in the Torres Strait in 2000 (TS5273) was related closely to KOKV and STRV, with 74–80 and 75–76 % nucleotide similarity, respectively. An isolate from mainland Cape York in 1998 (CY1014) was found to be more divergent from KOKV and STRV, with <70 % nucleotide sequence similarity to either virus. It is proposed that isolate TS5273 represents a new subtype of KOKV and that CY1014 be classified as a novel species within the Kokobera virus complex of flaviviruses, named New Mapoon virus.

Abstract:
The paper describes principles of improving the reliability of rural distribution networks of 6–35 kV based on smart switching devices, reclosers with specialized integrated controllers. The typical places to install reclosers for the radial and ring feeders are shown. They are mounted when a new consumer is connected and balance membership is delimited. It is also done to identify a responsible consumer with an indicated connection diagrams. The choice of the optimal number of reclosers for the radial and ring feeders according to indicative figures RNRE and ARAE, characterizing the relative efficiency of network reconstruction by reducing the number of consumer outages per year, and the average investment efficiency in network reconstruction when installing reclosers, is justified. There is presented a method to find SAIFI and SAIDI indicative reliability figures that characterize the average annual number of customer disconnections and the average annual duration of one disconnection in the electrical network.

However, the presence of images and photos that are spread evenly on almost every page of the manuscript, making SSZA appear as a unique text with its own characteristics. The unique characteristics of the SSZA are sometimes misinterpreted and even considered "vulgar" when compared to the existence of other Malay texts. Therefore, the writer tries to compare SSZA with Ghayat al-Muna who visually have many similarities or similarities of unique characteristics. Davis, Jenny, and n/a. ""Principal, he's the boss": power, culture and schooling on Saibai in the Torres Strait Islands." University of Canberra. Professional & Community Education, 2000. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20060427.084424.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines issues of power, culture and schooling as they apply to an indigenous community located on Saibai Island in the Torres Strait of northern Australia. The thesis combines literature research with ethnography to consider Saibaian schooling in various contexts. These include the history of schooling in the region, the relevant educational literature and the actual physical and social contexts of schooling on Saibai. Early chapters deal with methodology, history and educational literature. Later chapters deal with ethnographic material using the themes of separation, culture and collaborative decision-making to organise the data. The work of Michel Foucault informs the analytical approach to issues of power. Hence power is considered to be ubiquitous, productive and linked to issues of knowledge and culture. School principals are identified as key figures in schooling and therefore play a major role in the thesis. As the principals are all men of non-Islander (anglo) backgrounds, this thesis represents a significant break from works within the realm of indigenous education that are heavily influenced by cultural anthropology and tend to focus only on the Aboriginal or Islander participants as objects of study. The thesis considers how Saibaian people are excluded from schooling through various techniques and practices that tend to place the principal in a position of autocracy vis a vis the school. Furthermore, I show how various schooling practices that aim to include community members in schooling are shaped and transformed such that they actually serve to entrench the principal in his position of control over schooling. This applies even in the way that cultural activities are incorporated into the school illustrating that no aspect of schooling is immune to relations of power. Indeed, the notion of Saibaian Islanders belonging to a unique cultural group is used by some principals to argue that they are unsuited to roles within the school's decision-making process. Ultimately, then, this thesis is about relations between school principals and community members in the context of schooling on Saibai Island.

Hegi, Benjamin P. "Extermination Warfare? The Conduct of the Second Marine Division at Saipan." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2008. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc6098/.

Full text
Abstract:
Historians John W. Dower, Craig Cameron, and Ronald Takaki argue that the Pacific War was a war of extermination fueled by race hate. Therefore, the clash between the military forces of the Japanese Empire and United States of America yielded a "kill or be killed" environment across the battlefields of the Pacific. This work examines the conduct of the Second Marine Division during its campaign of conquest against the Japanese held island of Saipan from June 15, 1944-July 9, 1944. It is based upon traditional military history sources to test their theories in context of the conduct of Marines toward Japanese soldiers and civilians during the Saipan campaign. Did Marines practice a war of extermination or conduct themselves in a humane manner?

Abstract:
Saiyad Sultān’s narratological innovation of a Hindu prehistory to the traditional Islamic prophets is examined in this chapter. Saiyad Sultān reconstitutes Islamic prophetology to include Hindu divinities and sacred texts, tacitly enlarging the qurʾānic category of People of the Book to embrace the Hindus of Bengal. After the creation of Nūr Muhammad, specific Hindu deities, identifiable as Śiva and various avatāras of Viṣṇu, make their advent to eradicate evil from the earth. Their failure to reform their communities brings forth Ādam, and after him the line of Islamic prophets, culminating with the Prophet of Islam. One concern of this chapter is to demonstrate Sultān’s reliance upon various Perso-Arabic sources of the Tales of the Prophets (Qiṣaṣ al-anbiyāʾ) genre. Through analysis of Sultān’s portrayal of Ādam, Śīś (i.e., Shīth/Seth), and Iblīs, the chapter also highlights narratological features that exemplify how the author composes a “Purāṇa-Korān” salvation history for Bengal.

Abstract:
A construction of breakwaters and other shoreline structures on part of a coast influences drift sand transport in the bay, and causes comprehensive topographic changes on the beach. This study investigated shoreline and coastal changes, taking as an example of Shiraragahama Beach in Miiraku on the northwestern end of Fukue Island, Nagasaki Prefecture (Kyushu, Japan). Miiraku, adjacent to Saikai National Park, appears in the revered 8th century poetry collection “Manyoshu” and served as a port for a ship taken by the Japanese envoy to China during the Tang Dynasty (618-709). Because of the recent development of breakwaters for a fishing harbor, the shore environments of this beach have changed significantly. In this study, the status of silt deposits and topographic changes on this beach arising from the construction of a harbor breakwater were evaluated by comparing aerial photographs taken in different years. Next, the changes in the shoreline visible from aerial photographs from 1947 to 2014 were analyzed. Lastly, the altitude of the beaches was measured using accurate survey methods. The following results were obtained: 1) coastal erosion made rock cliffs to fall off along the shore and deposited sand on this beach; 2) the more serious advances or retreats of the shoreline took place around shoreline structures; 3) sandbars and beach cliffs were formed.
