Abstract:

Li, Yajie, Muhammad Alif Redzuan bin Abdullah, and Halis Azhan Bin Mohd Hanafiah. "Development of one translator’s style: A corpus-based investigation of Allan Barr’s style of translating Yu Hua’s works." International Journal of English Language and Literature Studies 12, no. 3 (October 2, 2023): 269–78. http://dx.doi.org/10.55493/5019.v12i3.4882.

Abstract:
This paper examines the evolution of translator Allan Barr's style and methodology. Regarded as the primary English translator of Yu Hua's works for fifteen years, Barr's corpus is examined in order to catalogue the development of his translation style. This corpus consists of Yu Hua’s Huanghun li de Nanhai and Siyue Sanri Shijian and their translations Boy in the Twilight: Stories of Hidden China (2003) and The April 3rd Incident: Stories (2018). The mixed-methods approach was applied to analyze Barr's idiosyncrasies in translating Direct Speech (DS) presentations at different stages of his career using the revised S-type model. A quantitative analysis identified a translator’s changing preferences in translating DS. The subsequent qualitative analysis addressed the translation strategies of (Free) Direct Speech and Barr's preferred position of report clauses at different points in time. The results suggest that Barr's translation styles were more influenced by his assumptions and attitude towards the implicit target readers and then dominated his stylistic choices, leading him to be more loyal to the source text and the author in his later translation and more inclined to present the literary world of the source text with less interference and interpretation by the translator. The implications proposed that the development of the translator’s style may be due to the promotion of the author’s familiarity with the literary field of the target language, the influence of the norms of the source language in which the translator is immersed in translation practice, and his increasing knowledge of style.

Abstract:
The article presents the results of the work of the School for a Young Translator, carried out on the initiative of the Institute of the Russian Language of the P. Lumumba Peoples’ Friendship University together with the representative office of Rossotrudnichestvo in Ankara and the Ankara University of Social Sciences. Within the framework of the school, interactive lectures were given on the general theory of translation, on translation as a process of interlingual transformation, on the types of translation transformations and intertextual connections of the original text, on the linguacultural background knowledge of the translator and the theory of lacunization. During practical classes, students were offered a questionnaire for determining intercultural connotations, created on the basis of the developments of Yu.A. Sorokin, as well as poems by A.A. Feta and short poems by Can Yucel and Aziz Nesin for independent translation from Russian into Turkish and from Turkish into Russian, respectively. The main event in the work of the school was the presentation of a new translation of the novel in verse by A.S. Pushkin “Eugene Onegin”. The translator of the novel, philologist and writer Sabri Gürses spoke about the difficulties of translating Russian poetry into Turkish, about the importance of knowing the general cultural, historical and literary background for creating any translated literary text. One of the main tasks of the translation of “Eugene Onegin” is to preserve the language of A.S. Pushkin as a complex stylistic system, which includes not only all the styles of speech of that era, but also book-archaic phrases and Old Slavonicisms, therefore the Turkish language of his translation should include all these styles and correspond to the speech image of the characters.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter and the two following explore different facets of participation and the related issue of responsibility as they give structure and meaning to three situated sequences of narratives. Sari, the second daughter in the Budi family, was the central speaker in each of the three situations. But each of the storytelling contexts involved different participants who interpreted and hence performed their roles in the speech event in accordance with that interpretation. I have argued that meaning is strongly tied to social context and it is through these stories that we begin to see how aspects of meaning are actively shaped. We specifically learn to recognize how participation in a conversation is synonymous with being responsible for it. Responsibility here has a wide range. Initially, we need to keep in mind that there is no freedom of speech in this society and that disagreement or conflict of whatever kind tends to be avoided. Furthermore, it is my intention to show that these Javanese speakers do not reflexively see their “tradition” as oppressive but rather actively participate in sustaining it as a high cultural ideal. With a tradition of refinement and elegance in all social interactions as the backdrop, these Javanese speakers are acutely aware that words released into the public sphere carry consequences. These situations illustrate the extent to which the story is linked to a sociocentric framework that begins with the participants and extends into the broader domain of community membership and the elements of hierarchy that shape it.
