Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 78-84.
This dissertation describes a clinical decision taken to separate an adolescent girl child from her mother and place her in the care of her father. This decision was considered imperative in light of the continued risks posed to the physical and emotional health of the child through continued living with her mother. The mother's combined presentation of hatred and sadomasochism, underlying a borderline personality structure, acted as a powerful obstacle in her being able to love her daughter. Using the theoretical tenets of self psychology to understand the clinical presentation of both mother and daughter, it emerged that the fragmented self-structure of the mother, which had its antecedents in her own traumatic childhood milieu did not permit an interpretive therapeutic approach. Instead work with both the mother and daughter required careful and continuous monitoring, and a flexible clinical stance especially when the therapy itself inadvertently retraumatised the mother. The advantage of the case study, the methodological design employed in this thesis, is that it enabled one to provide an in-depth study of a specific case, especially in light of issues that are considered unusual such as the separation that this intervention demanded. The case study also provided the opportunity to follow the progress of the psychotherapeutic treatment of the child both prior to and after the separation. A detailed discussion of the therapy provides an opportunity to reflect on the issues which informed the decision, the process and the outcome. Reflecting on the theoretical, research and clinical implications of the decision leads to the conclusion that the value of psychoanalytic theory cannot be undermined, especially as it provided the theoretical justification for the decision which has had a helpful outcome for the child concerned.

Abstract:
This dissertation is an authorship study of the controversial contemporary French film director Catherine Breillat. Using screen captures to provide visual evidence for the philosophical and theoretical perspectives staked out by Breillat, I perform close analysis of the following six films: Une Vrai Jeune Fille (1976), 36 Fillette (1988), Romance (1999), À Ma Soeur (2001), Brève Traverseé (2001), and Anatomie de L'enfer (2004). Using theory only to supplement interpretations, I draw on the work of George Bataille, Stanley Cavell, and Slavoj Zizek. Breillat's films work through a series of important philosophical ideas integral to an account of eroticism: the paradox of speaking about silence; achieving purity through an encounter with disgust; the singularity of individual desire; the split in identity between the mind and the body; the relationship between sex and death; the relationship between the taboo and transgression; and the violence of female desire. Breillat's films encourage viewers to alter their thinking about sexuality and liberate themselves to lead a more fully erotic life. The capacity of Breillat's films to free eroticism is their most important contribution not only to film history, but also to the totality of human experience.

Fulkerson, Anita. "Bound by consent: concepts of consent within the leather and bondage, domination, sadomasochism (BDSM) communities." Thesis, Wichita State University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/3717.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is a qualitative examination of the definitions, beliefs, practices and the importance of consent within the Leather and Bondage, Domination, Sadomasochism (BDSM) communities using the experiences of those who identify as members of those communities. Through interviews with fifteen self-identified practitioners of BDSM/Leather, the research attempts to define consent, identify the importance of consent, and how consent is practiced within those lifestyles. It also seeks to address some of the commonly held misconceptions concerning the BDSM and Leather communities held by those outside the communities. The research attempts to establish how members of the communities define and practice consent in both their sexual and everyday lives. The standard definition of consent given was an "informed agreement between persons to act in an activity which is mutually beneficial for everybody involved." (I1) Additional elements to the basic definition included the necessity of a sound mind (I2 & I3), that the agreement is made willingly, free from coercion and outside influence - either from another person or from mind altering substances (I1,I2, I3, I6, I14), and that consent must be given by both the dominant and submissive partners. Also, consent for the Leather and BDSM practitioners interviewed included an understanding by all parties about what was expected, what the parties were and were not willing to do during the course of the interaction (the scene), and where consent stopped. At its most basic level the idea of consent was stated as "the ability to say yes." (I13)

Abstract:

Beckmann, Andrea. "The social construction of 'Sadomasochism' : subjugated knowledges and the broader social meanings of this bodily practice." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/26285.

Full text
Abstract:
The central ideas of this critical criminological thesis on the social construction of "Sadomasochism" are informed by Michel Foucault's politization of "truth" and "body" and represent an attempt to engage in politics of difference'(Sawicki, l991) in order to appreciate the contemporary expansion of the 'body practice' of consensual 'SM'. In order to avoid the traditional dualism of mind/body which 'haunts' much of feminist and deconstructionist accounts on 'sexuality', my thesis draws on Merleau- Ponty's notion of 'lived body'. The 'Spanner'-case [R. v. Brown: 1992-93] and the following decision of the European Court of Human Rights (19.2.1997) are taken as a point of departure in order to explore the relationship between legitimised concepts of 'body-practice' and the now legally restricted 'body-practice' of consensual 'SM'. The first chapter of this thesis attempts to defamiliarize the social constructions of 'sexuality' and 'Sadomasochism' as well as the 'body' and 'pain' as these are 'normalising' concepts of 'truth'. In this context the exploration of the meanings of 'body' and 'sexuality' in contemporary consumer culture is crucial as the criminalisation of consensual 'SM' which involves woundings that are not 'trifling or transient' is based on the protection of health 'of the bodies' involved. The following chapter focuses on the empirical research on consensual 'SM'-body-practice which I conducted within a mainly qualitative research-framework and an interactionist emphasis on meaning during 1996/97 in London and thus provides space for the 'subjugated knowledges' of this consensual body-practice'. The exposure of socially legitimized power relationships which are in many ways contradicted by the realities of "Sadomasochism" is the aim of chapter four of this thesis. Within this chapter I attempt to point out several contradictions of constructed meaning that the social construction of 'Sadomasochism' serves to keep hidden via its function of 'Other'. The project of deconstruction thus not only implies the deconstruction of concepts but also aims to expose: "... the problems which reside in the endeavour to keep meaning pure, to say 'just this' and not 'that', because 'just this' always depends on 'that' which it is not." (Naffine, l997, p.89). Chapter five reflects upon the empirical data and attempts to outline the potential broader social meanings of the rising interest in the consensual bodily practice'of 'SM' within contemporary 'postmodern' consumer culture. Chapter six offers an insight and exploration of the to my knowledge not yet empirically researched upon spiritual dimension of consensual 'Sadomasochism' and introduces the notion of transcendence. Apart from the evaluation of the results of a questionnaire on this topic, diverse examples of other historical spiritual practices within their socio-cultural settings are then analysed in their relevance to the current situation. The conclusion of this thesis attempts to offer an alternative reading of the 'bodily practice' of consensual 'SM' as a potential 'practice of resistance' and also explores its potential relevance in connection to Foucault's notion of the care of oneself.

Abstract:
The object of this essay is the Swedish author Agnes von Krusenstjerna's novels Ninas dagbok (The diary of Nina) and Helenas första kärlek (Helena's first love) as well as the cycle novel Fröknarna von Pahlen (The misses von Pahlen). The purpose is to explore her use of the discourse of girls' fiction, which I analyse by the depiciton of women's sexual awakening, and her depiction of sadomasochism. The theories of Elaine Showalter, Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault and Judith Butler are used. Women's sexual awakening is depicted similarly in the novels but more explicitly in Fröknarna von Pahlen. In Ninas dagbok and Helenas första kärlek there is an eroticization of dominance and submission, which is not explicitly sadomasochistic. In Fröknarna von Pahlen, sadomasochism is explicitly described as a "perverted" sexuality and reveals the inequality in the violent sexuality, which is described as "normal". The sexuality that is included in Fröknarna von Pahlen's ending utopia is a female same-sex sexuality, which is a further development of the intimate friendships that are often depicted through the discourse of girls' fiction. Accordingly, Fröknarna von Pahlen and its ending utopia can be interpreted as a "city of girls", that is a further developement of subjects such as female same-sex sexuality and sadomasochism that can only be implied within the discourse of girls' fiction.

Abstract:
This essay examines the sadomasochistic relationship between the main characters of the Twilight Saga from a psychoanalytic perspective, and looks at the family and gender roles in the Saga from a post-feministic view. Aspects also considered are the portrayal of female sexuality as something dangerous and negative, recreational sex as something perverted, and the pro-marriage and anti-abortion propaganda in the last two novels. The purpose of the essay is to reveal how the author’s personal, and to some extent religious, beliefs and values are validated through the storyline; how the relationship between the main characters, as well as their personal psychological and physical health, change after matrimony and parenthood.

This dissertation deals with the experimentation with sadomasochistic performances in an anthropologic and artistic process of thinking by constructing a poetics of cruelty. On that learning journey, the author will propose the actualization of a performative-installation that transmits sensitive signs (figurative and figural ones) of sadomasochism. The theoretical traverse lines come from Bruno Latour’s symmetrical anthropology, Antonin Artaud’s theatre of cruelty, Clarice Lispector’s literature, the philosophy of the sensible by Jacques Rancière with the nomadic philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari, the Performance Studies, and the dissident knowledges from Queer Theory, specially the contrasexual thinking by Paul Beatriz Preciado. Taking sensation and representation during this learning, the lines of force will be sought by allowing the anthropologic and artistic knowledge to move through the simultaneity of cultural and natural agencies which, in the poststructuralist turn, soar towards new perspectives on what arts, genders, sexualities, the current machines of production-injunction-reappropriation of pleasures and the technologies of bodies could be. To sum up, this dissertation has affect as an axe whose sciences named methodology and the percept as an epistemology of the lived experience.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Research with individuals who practise consensual Bondage, Discipline, Domination, Submission, Sadism, Masochism (BDSM) has revealed a complex and multi-faceted phenomenon which serves various functions for its practitioners. Historical associations of BDSM practice with underlying psychopathology, despite empirical evidence to the contrary, may lead to misunderstanding among practitioner psychologists and potentially biased or culturally insensitive psychological treatment of BDSM-oriented individuals. This Q-methodological study investigated subjective understandings of BDSM among practitioner psychologists and whether these understandings were shared with or separate from those who practise BDSM. Forty practitioner psychologists and 40 BDSM practitioners completed a q-sorting task and brief questionnaire online. Comparable majority understandings of BDSM – as a complex phenomenon concerned mainly with power and pleasure – emerged between the psychologist and BDSM practitioner groups. Psychologists generally did not consider themselves particularly knowledgeable on the subject of BDSM, partly due to having received limited teaching and training. There is a need for raising awareness among practitioner psychologists of BDSM as a non-normative, minority sexuality.

The purpose of this study is to examine escort-business with a focus on sales of BDSM-services (Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and Submission, Sadism and Masochism). The study is based on qualitative interviews with three informants providing BDSM-services, as well as a survey with 96 men who requested domination of escorts (the survey was carried out by an escort in the 1980s). The analysis of this material resulted in the identification of three themes on which the study centers: The personal experiences of the three escorts, the interaction between the escorts and the clients, and the changes over time when it comes to the performance of BDSM-services. The study has a gender perspective. The important conclusions are that there are several differences between prostitution having a focus on BDSM-services and other prostitution. Sexual intercourse is not a common occurrence. Role-playing games involving domination and submission, physical pain, humiliation and fantasies are instead central elements. Due to the security risks submissive services have been assumed not to exist in prostitution. In this study, however, two of the informants present themselves as submissive. Nothing in the empirical material suggests a greater security risk for escorts providing BDSM-services than other sexsellers. Instead, the escorts themselves characterize the phenomenon by straightforwardness, upright communication, and pre-agreed rules of the interaction.

GILLERI, GIOVANNA. "Sexed/gendered subjectivities inside and outside international human rights law." Doctoral thesis, European University Institute, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10281/333616.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the interrelationship between sex and gender under international human rights law and how this influences individual subject formations. The research combines feminist, queer and psychoanalytical theories to scrutinise the sexed/gendered human rights discourse, starting from the theoretical assumptions underpinning the interpretations of sex, gender, and the related notions of gender identity, sex characteristics and sexual orientation. Specific interpretations of these categories outline the definition of victims and perpetrators of sex/gender-based abuses. Human rights law has so far accounted for the diversity of sexed/gendered subjectivities only to a limited extent, being based on four axioms: there are only two sexes and two genders (m/f); sex is a natural fact and gender is a social construct (sex ≠ gender); gender is the metonymic signifier for women (gender = women); gender power relations take the asymmetrical shape of male domination versus female oppression (m > f). Interpretations of domination and subordination in relation to femininities and masculinities determine the scope of human rights protections. Gender-based analysis on subordination has predominantly concentrated on women as the vulnerable group subject to men’s domination. However, such a focus excludes the consideration of differences within the same groups of men, women and any other gendered individuals, and thereby the multiple, nuanced gendered dynamics between gendered subjects. In contrast, this research maintains that dominative and subordinate postures interchangeably attach to femininities and masculinities, depending on the subjects’ roles, their positionalities and the situational meanings of their acts. The examination of two case-studies, on the UN human rights treaty bodies’ vocabulary on medically unnecessary interventions upon intersex children and on the European Court of Human Rights’ narrative on sadomasochism, shows the limits of an approach to gender which is based on rigid dichotomic pairs of masculinity/femininity, domination/subordination and perpetrator/victim. Such an approach can hardly reveal the assumptions of gendered interplays and their impact on subject formation.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to examine how four sexually dominant women understand their sexuality. It specifically concentrates upon how the women defines themselves as sexually dominant and what dominance means to them sexually but also what it means to them in everyday life and in general. Additionally this essay examines how the informants understand their sexual dominance in relation to their identity and in shaping their identity. In order to carry out the purpose of this thesis four women who define themselves in one way or another as sexually dominant have been interviewed. Furthermore the study focuses upon women who practice their sexual dominance through activities and expressions that are common in the world of bdsm.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to hightlight experiences of living in a relationship where BDSM is being exercised. The acronym is an umbrella term for bondage/discipline, dominance/submission and sadomasochism. The study is based on qualitative interviews with five persons who define themselves as BDSM practitioners. The overall questions of this study are: How does the BDSM practice appear in everyday life? How did the practice start and how has it developed over time? What's included in the sexual BDSM practice? The empirical material has been analyzed with interactionism as the theoritical framework. The picture that emerges is complex. To define oneself as a BDSM practitioner might mean different things for different people where the extent of the practice, what it consists of and how integrated it is in the lives of people might vary from person to person. But despite differences there are also recurring, common patterns in the stories of the informants. All of them describe the practice in positive terms. To a great extent the practice has to do with sexuality where an explicit power exchange, an assuming of dominant and submissive roles and an everyday life filled with rituals, rules and agreements are described as being key elements. Punishment, in the form of physical pain or humiliation, is common when the rules are not obeyed. All the interviewees use safewords to make sure both are comfortable about what's happening. Some sort of tool is utilized by all. The most common are whips, bonds, chains and locks, paddles, clamps/clothespins, knives, butt plugs and ropes. There's an occupation among the informants to find and to form strategies to cope and to adapt the BDSM role to other roles and here the parental role is the most apparent. Also an ambition to create a balance between the personal norms and the norms of the BDSM culture and those of the overall society can be seen. The interviewees express a search for answers to why one practices BDSM. In this process they return to experiences, almost exclusively of a destructive nature, and they wonder if these experiences have affected their sexuality and their preference for BDSM. It's like this even if the common attitude in society actually has become more accepting, for example with the help of media, recent research and the fact that it's not anymore is considered being a disorder.

The theoretical traverse lines come from Bruno Latourâs symmetrical anthropology, Antonin Artaudâs theatre of cruelty, Clarice Lispectorâs literature, the philosophy of the sensible by Jacques RanciÃre with the nomadic philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari, the Performance Studies, and the dissident knowledges from Queer Theory, specially the contrasexual thinking by Paul Beatriz Preciado.

Abstract:
Psychopathy is currently conceptualised as a personality disorder that results in cognitive, neurological, affective deficits, behavioural problems, criminal behaviour and recidivism. Psychopathy is most often associated with the offending population, and as consequence, psychopathy based research has been dominated by examination of the male, offender psychopathy. Consequently, what is currently conceptualised regarding psychopathy is biased toward this particular psychopathy sub-type. Recent research provides evidence that psychopathy is heterogeneous, dimensional construct found in a varied populations and age groups. The deficits so often associated with psychopathy may vary based on the sub-type of psychopathy this includes subclinical subtypes of psychopathy that seem to be present. Consequently, what is understood about psychopathy including the assumptions regarding affective, neurocognitive, deficits, higher risk of violence, including sexual violence, and other assumptions may be dependent upon the sub-type of psychopathy or preponderance of psychopathic traits present. External correlates associated with psychopathy have been examined in non-clinical samples to examine how aversive emotion, disgust, and atypical sexual fantasy and practices, in the form of consensual sadomasochism may be related to psychopathic traits as measured by the PPI-R.

Abstract:
During the latter decade, the pathologies defined as acting out behaviors have been bestowed a large place within the metapsychological conceptualisation. In the course of adolescence, the body takes up a paradoxicalal room in a being who perceive transformations and has not yet integrated them. How to understand, coordinate, indeed organize the existence of mental symptomatologies positive ones, such as delirium, and negative ones such as acting out behaviors, among the psychotic desorders of adolescence? In our research, we perceive delirium and acting out behaviors as solutions for teenagers treated in a day hospital. This research is a longitudinal study upheld by the following hypothesis : Delirium and acting out behavior are symptoms trying to resolve the conflits between Narcissism and anti-Narcissism. To manage this research efficiently, we had recourse to clinical interviews with five teenagers, to projective personality tests ( Rorschach and T. A. T) as well as to clinical pieces of information from referents and staffs. The analysis of the pieces of information collected show that when teenagers are in the care of a suitable institution, their acting out behaviors may reveal an attempt to revitalize the sadomasochistic process at the care of the organisation of the narcissistic nucleus of the Ego

Abstract:
There is an ongoing fascination with the Victorian era as well as the genre of horror, and the characters originating from the first 18th century Gothic tales still appear in our Western popular culture today. The Victorian Gothic novels contain elements of romanticism and violence which often results in strong undertones of heated sexuality. I argue that it is one of the reasons for the genre’s wide popularity. This thesis examines the representation of femininity and female sexuality within a Victorian horror context by a comparative analyse of illustrations from British 19th century Penny Blood publications with contemporary fashion photographs. The images are analysed by applying Erwin Panofsky’s method of Iconography and with the theoretical framework of feminist visual culture, and historical theories on sexuality, biology and violence. The thesis shows how Gothic visualisations are interpreted and appropriated photographically today, where the latter is darker and more exaggerated than the former. Symbols of sexuality, female agency, dominance and submission are equally found in the Victorian and the contemporary material. However, the Victorian aesthetic has become a platform where a nude, sexual female body in a S&M situation can offer a spectrum of meanings and even symbols of feminism. It is a visual culture where women can fight back, taking revenge on their oppressor and looking fierce when doing so.

Abstract:

Abstract:
While the term sadomasochism might conjure cursory images of whips, chains, and leather-clad fetishists, this thesis delves deeper into sadomasochistic theory to analyze dynamics of power and powerlessness represented by a chosen sample of literary relationships. Using two contemporary works of vampire literature—Anne Rice's novel Interview with the Vampire and Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series—I examine how power is structured by and between male and female characters (and vampires and humans), and particularly emphasize the patriarchal messages these works' regressive sexual politics engender. Psychoanalysis and feminist theory are employed to support my overarching argument following the gendered dynamics of male sadism and female masochism (and vampire sadism and human masochism), as this dyad reflects men's and women's "normalized" roles of power and powerlessness, respectively, in today's society. Sadomasochistic relationships as depicted in this literature are created through mutual contracts or, what I refer to as, sociocultural sadomasochism to reflect the gendered power imbalances inherent in patriarchy. By concluding with readers' responses to these franchises, this thesis further attempts to determine why such unequal and oppressive relationships are desirable. Since vampires as Gothic figures embody what specific cultures dread yet desire, this literature possesses frightening implications—gender roles are conservative and masculinity is privileged in fiction and, by extension, in twenty-first-century American culture.

Abstract:
Fault Lines positions a theory of gay male subjectivity as it relates to the Queer skinhead and its dissemination in gay male pornography. In narrating the transformation of the original skinhead as a subcultural youth type to its present re-signification as a fetish and sexual identity within gay male subculture, Fault Lines reveals a tripartite problem of fetishism, sadomasochism and fascism. Through an analysis of Bruce LaBruce's film Skin Gang / Skin Flick (1999) these problems are contextualised within a discourse of gay male pornography, broadening the investigation to consider how problems of masculinity, violence and race manifest within a distinctly gay male sexual imaginary. Examining the representational function of the Queer skinhead, Fault Lines seeks to speculate on how notions of a gay male subject and subjectivity can be established at the intersection of an aesthetic, political and social experience.

Abstract:
The thesis discusses the topic of bodily autonomy as a Human Rights related matter in connection to sexuality, specifically BDSM. In the realm of BDSM concerns regarding bodily autonomy, bodily integrity, perversion, physical and mental health can be found. Therefore the space of BDSM is analyzed in regards to aspects, such as medico-judicial institutions, social and personal perception factor in on the space of bodily autonomy and its transgression, with the aim of getting a deeper understanding of the concept of bodily autonomy. Three different countries, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Denmark are being analyzed and compared in a content analysis. Foucault’s theory of power, self-disciplining, transgression as well as Bataille's theory of transgression and eroticism are made use of. This shows how and which topics relate to bodily autonomy and each other and how bodily autonomy and its use changes depending on the factors relation to each other and their prioritization.

Full text
Abstract:
"FUNNY GAMES.
"FUNNY GAMES. Spielräume des Sadomasochismus in Film und Medien" aims to reconstruct a history of pleasure and gratification through pain in the media since the end of the eighteenth century. In addition to classical sado-masochistic literature, the thesis focuses on movies in which modern forms of experiencing and desiring pain such as VIDEODROME (1983), I AM GUILTY (2005), THE HURT LOCKER (2008) and SHORTBUS (2006) manifest themselves. Central to the study are concepts of techno-imaginary wish machines and infernal devices, dynamised ego-apparatuses, that are experienced and expressed through the media of their time by writers, philosophers, psychoanalysts and film directors such as Donatien-Alphonse-François de Sade, Leopold and Wanda von Sacher-Masoch, Ernst Kapp, Sigmund Freud, Daniel Paul Schreber, Jacques Lacan, Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, David Cronenberg, Michael Haneke and Kathryn Bigelow. The present study, an attempt to secure the medial evidence and try it out at the same time, is meant most of all as an invitation to participate: to experience positive desire and lust while obsessively progressing through virtual worlds of dreams and nightmares and the real world of the human body, to open oneself to new experiences in order to gain both new knowledge and new desires. Anti-Oedipus as a textual videogame. The analytical tools employed in this study include findings from (structural) psychoanalysis, media sciences, (movie) philosophy, gender theory, the theory of violence, fetish theory and game theory as applied in cultural studies. They have proven to be very helpful in illuminating at least some aspects of the mystery that is the sado-masochist desire for pain.
