Hill, John. "Some Disputed Questions about Confirmation." Pacifica: Australasian Theological Studies 11, no. 3 (October 1998): 281–301. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/1030570x9801100304.

Abstract:
The sacrament of confirmation has been for some time the subject of much theological debate and diverse pastoral practice. Across the Christian spectrum, and within individual churches, there has been little agreement on the meaning of the rite, on its sacramental status, on its minister, on the appropriate age and preparation of the subject, and so on. While some of this confusion is gradually yielding to increased awareness of the history and evolution of the rite, there is evidence that the problem has been exacerbated by common logical fallacies, an understanding of which may clarify the issue.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to present G. K. Chesterton’s and C. S. Lewis’s understanding of sacramental realism and its possible adoption in pre-evangelisation. It is demonstrated that G. K. Chesterton’s works influenced C.S Lewis’s conversion, his Christian literary thinking, and his apologetics. Both Chesterton and Lewis offered sacramental perceptions of the world, available through the baptism of imagination. In their works, imagination helps reason to expand and recognise the supernatural in the natural. Therefore, imagination is an essential part of their apologetics of Christianity, which still appeals to contemporary man. In this way, new imaginative apologetics can serve as a suitable preparation for the proclamation of the Gospel today.

Abstract:
The sacrament of priesthood within the whole space of the development of the Church and its presence in civilisation is one of the key issues. It proves its meaning as well as the necessity of undertaking an ongoing reflection in the context of challenges resulting from the civilisation development. Theology of priesthood is also an essential aspect that has a multi-dimension character and, as such, is a subject of various fields of theology as well as non-theological ones. A reflection upon its relation to a common priesthood of all the faithful, resulting from the sacrament of Baptism, comes into special importance nowadays. Present-day challenges resulting from the development of culture post-modernity require a clear and precise drawing of the essence of sacramental priesthood. The Sacrament of Orders which defines the character and charisma of the called one brings the inseparable sacramental bond with the Christ the Highest and the Only Patriarch. We can find a proper charismatic identity of priesthood in this relation. The other dimension of this charisma is the mission, in which a priest acts in persona Christi. The dual charismatic dimension makes a proper way of making out and understanding the identity of a priest. It means that a priest cannot be substituted in his vocation and the authority which he receives in The Sacrament of Holy Orders and the unity with his bishop. Properly understood and made out identity needs the competent preparation and formation of the candidates to the priesthood, those who have already received Orders and those who are responsible for it alike. All dimensions of formation must be properly integrated. The essential integrating element in the process of ongoing formation is specific priestly spirituality. It means that the fact who a priest is, and then what his mission is, results from the unity of a priest with Christ. The already mentioned civilisation challenges require permanent studies of the ways and methods of the formation. This way the process of formation defends itself from naturalistic or spiritualistic one-sidedness, which a present Pope Francis reminded of, when he said about two “subtle enemies of sanctity”, which are “a present-day Gnosticism” and “a present-day Pelagianism".

Woody, William C. "Givenness, Saturation, and the Self: A Phenomenology of Christian Initiation." Religions 12, no. 8 (August 13, 2021): 642. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/rel12080642.

Abstract:
Phenomenology holds great promise yet underdeveloped potential for ritual studies and liturgical theology. As phenomenology has indeed taken a “theological turn” and the contentiousness of such an approach abates, questions remain as to what insights, concepts, and language phenomenology can offer to deepen our understanding of Christian ritual practices. Specifically with respect to rituals of initiation, does phenomenology open new avenues of appreciation for the sacrament of baptism, to enrich and to deepen the faithful’s experience of these rituals? This article considers insights afforded by a phenomenological approach to the sacrament, in particular with regard to adult baptism and the catechumenate in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA), the rite of reception and sacramental initiation into the Roman Catholic Church. Considered through such lenses, a phenomenology of baptism promises to open new avenues of ritual understanding, theological appreciation, and depth of prayer. Drawing primarily from the work of Jean-Luc Marion, this article also considers prominent critiques of his work to articulate a phenomenology of baptism as an experience of givenness and reception, of identity formation within and through an ecclesial community, and of prayerful preparation for Christian neophytes.

Abstract:
The use of herbs has been the main means of curing diseases in traditional Africa and this continued through the colonial period to present times. Widely held traditional views that interpreted certain diseases as caused by supernatural agents meant that, although some ailments could be naturally caused, in most cases, shrine priests and diviners were needed to dispense herbal preparations for clients. Christian missionaries mostly – though by no means all – denounced herbal medicines as evil, looking on them as pagan because of the close relationship between herbs and agents of local divinities. At the emergence of the African independent church movement at the beginning of the twentieth century, herbal medicines acquired a sacramental value, and today they are obtained from churches and local prophets as therapeutic substances infused with spiritual power for healing. The sacramental interpretation of herbs has been extended to those obtained from prayer places and grottoes under the supervision of historic mission denominations, a phenomenon that has virtually transformed the image of herbs and herbal medicines in African therapeutic systems.

In this article I argue that the rise of secular culture demands a new approach to baptism, especially the baptism of adult converts for whom the claims of Christianity may be entirely unfamiliar and who will in consequence need extensive preparation to make the sacrament sensible and the Christian life meaningful. Towards that end, I review work done on the subject in the Church of Scotland and commend the Roman Catholic Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) as a model for the development of a full catechumenate.

Abstract:
AbstractDrawing from personal experience or the preparation of aspiring pastors, some English authors sought to refine clerical job descriptions during the first century of religious reform. Although clerical advice manuals consistently demanded a morally upright life and suitable academic training, the pastor's ongoing spiritual formation assumed more importance. Handbooks written by authors as diverse as the "Puritan" Richard Bernard, the "establishment" pastor George Herbert, and the "papist" George Gilbert also outlined the use of several novel methods to deal with individuals who failed to respond to more traditional means of preaching and provision of the sacraments. A close reading of such manuals provides a window on competing visions of English clerical life before 1660.

Abstract:
Church Fathers tried to combat the legacy of paganism and made tireless efforts towards Christianising family events, recalling the teaching of the Bible. Tertullian, for example, complained that the Christians of Carthage didn’t marry in the church. The article discusses Carmen XXV of Paulinus of Nola († 431), written for the occasion of marriage of Julian and Tysia. The poem contains one of the oldest descriptions of the ceremony of Christian marriage. Bishop of Nola pays attention to the spiritual dimension of the sacrament – specifically to its rich, full of symbols rite as well as to fact that the Christian meaning of the marriage ceremony should become the main focus for wedding preparations.

Abstract:
The summer of 1908 was a summer of congresses in London. The decennial Pan-Anglican Congress assembled in July, the History of Religions Congress met in September, the Trades Union Congress held its annual meeting shortly thereafter, and the International Congress on Moral Education took place in October. None of these received as much newspaper attention as the Roman Catholic International Eucharistic Congress, which convened in England for the first time, from Wednesday 9 to Sunday 13, September. Many column inches were devoted to the preparations and proceedings; photographs were printed; and hundreds of readers’ letters were published afterwards. In reportage the newspapers differed slightly; in opinion, more so. Most of the proceedings were not controversial at all, consisting of liturgies, lectures on various aspects of Catholic belief concerning the Eucharist, and evening meetings in the Albert Hall. What excited the press and sections of the public was the proposed closing spectacular: a procession of the Blessed Sacrament through the streets around Westminster Cathedral.

Abstract:
This article is set out to explicate the changing understanding of the Eucharist among the Kikuyu communicants in the diocese of Thika since its introduction by the Anglican missionaries. The concept of Athomi, literally rendered as “leaners”, ascribed communicants the attributes of continuing Christian learners full of spiritual expectation in the holy communion sacrament. These days however, that “unique thing” is absent as the service is invaded by “the wrong people” with “mud”. The article is informed by qualitative data collected among the members and clerics of Thika Diocese in the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK). It argues that the changing perception of the Eucharist by communicants of Thika diocese is largely influenced by Kikuyu’s incarnation of the meal elements, the manner in which the meal is administered, the preparation of the communicants and the teachings on the subject by clerics. Informed by the incarnation theory, the article further argues that there is a need for an ideological shift in the diocese so that the Eucharist is not merely perceived as affecting the social relationships and individual identity but more so the spiritual wellbeing as a means of conveying God’s grace.

Abstract:
For Catholics, marriage is a divine calling of God. Marriage is one of the seven sacraments within the Church. It is the symbol of the God’s salvation. Through marriage a husband and a wife can experience the salvation of God. Both of them also has functioned to reveal the God’s grace, salvation and blessings for each other. The Catholic Church also consider a family as a a mini or small church. A mommitment to marry in Catholic ways is beautiful but not an easy decision. A couple may face challenges and problems. In order to increase of the couples’ understanding of Catholic Marriage and to strengthen them to cope with various marrietal problems, the Local Catholic Church of Ruteng Diocese provides an Course on Preparation of Catholic Marriage to the future couples who want to marry in Catholic Church. This articles aims at describing on how the program is planned, implemented and the expected result after joinging the course. This program is a way to educate and to rise the awareness of the couple about the Catholic marriage. It is considered useful. However, it would be better if it is run in more professional way. Moreover, this program should be added with continous other activities such as pastoral of marriage and marriage counceling. It is also an urgent to have marriage crisis centre that helps the couples who have problems of marriage.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Seismic activity and other natural and human forces significantly threaten the structural integrity of Delta levee systems. Breached levees appreciably impact fresh water resources, damage crops and livestock, destroy homes, schools, public works, businesses and wild species habitat, among other vital, sensitive areas. Levee failure often leads to oil and petroleum contamination of freshwater resources, particularly in dense residential, agricultural and commercial areas protected by levee systems that depend upon such water resources for drinking, irrigation and industrial uses. San Joaquin Delta to illustrate selected impacts to a freshwater region jeopardized by levee failure, this paper will: 1) discuss the current state of the Delta levee systems and detail the fragility of the system and the potential consequences of major impacts - earthquakes and floods likely to jeopardize this system; 2) review issues concerning levee breach preparedness, including practices to maintain levee structure and promote levee rehabilitation; and 3) suggest a coordinated federal, state and local response to contain damage caused by a levee breach, with particular focus on oil and hazardous materials spill impacts. As with many levee systems, the issues presented by a levee breach to the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta region are complex and require close, concerted federal, state and local participation, not only to rapidly and effectively respond to impacted areas, but to anticipate and avoid more massive levee failure. Employment of these levee protection and breach response measures will help defend, among other vital resources, domestic, agricultural and industrial water for use from oil, petroleum and other hazardous contaminants.

Abstract:
This article is concerned with an underexplored aspect of St. Symeon the New Theologian’s teaching, viz., his soteriology. Intrinsic textual (contextual) and systemic analytical approaches are used in attempt to reconstruct the basic principles of St. Symeon’s soteriological system (such as healing of the human nature through restoration of the communion with God, the relation between freedom and grace), as well as to analyse the specifics of this system, viz. holism, Christocentricity, Eucharist-centeredness, ecclesiological centeredness; the meaning of personal ascesis, mystical experience and participation in the sacraments of the Church. St. Symeon regards Christ’s Economy of Salvation as preparation of the Eucharistic chalice. On the other hand, this economy, becoming part of a person’s mystical experience and reproduced in a particular person, constitutes the essence of his personal salvation. However, this happens in the organic unity of the Church’s body. St. Symeon’s doctrine of salvation is an original system representing the processes of general and personal salvation as a single whole.

Abstract:
When Margery Kempe imagines each member of the Trinity sitting within the chamber of her soul on a cushion of an appropriate color, she uses familiar household furnishings to develop a metaphor that helps explain a complex theological concept, while at the same time creating the sense that these ideas are as natural and easy to accept as the objects from which the metaphor is constructed. Similarly, in an Easter sermon preached in 1431, her contemporary Nicholas Philip, a Franciscan friar of the convent in King's Lynn (Margery's hometown), uses household furnishings to prepare his listeners to receive the Eucharist at Easter. The sermon is built on the metaphor of the body as the house to which Christ has been invited for a feast, and, like Kempe's Trinity image, this house has furnishings — a carpet, a tapestry, a cushion, a seat cover — and the feast itself involves a variety of dishes along with music and entertaining guests. The sermon develops a multifaceted image that becomes a complete sensory experience, focusing not on the meaning of transubstantiation but on the communicant's proper disposition. While Nicholas Philip's Easter sermon may be unusual in using this imagery to shape an entire sermon, many late medieval Easter sermons preached in England employ such domestic imagery to elucidate for their audiences the significance of the Eucharist, the reception of which, for most of the laity living in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, took place only on Easter. In a process that can be called the domestication of the divine, such metaphors render this annual reception less distant and abstract, making an event with supernatural implications as natural and familiar as a dinner party. However, the rhetorical purpose of this domestication is not primarily to encourage feelings of comfort and easy familiarity with the theological underpinnings of the sacrament, but to promote virtue and responsibility in the recipient both in preparation for and following this event. Nicholas Philip's Easter sermon thus testifies to a homiletic concern of many late medieval English preachers as well as to the artistic license a preacher might take to effect that concern.

The second part of this article continues the exploration of theological reflection on the holy places of Palestine in the works of these eminent hagiographers of Palestinian monasticism of the 6th-7th centuries: the Life of St. Theodosius by Theodore of Petra, a series of Lives compiled by Cyril of Scythopolis, and the Spiritual Meadow by John Moschus. In the light of patristic tradition a diverse range of moral, ascetical and exegetical topics of this theological field is examined, including: 1) the holy places as the living environment of Palestinian ascetics; 2) the veneration of the holy places, the flight from the world, and the desire for hesychia as a threefold factor of attraction to Palestine for ascetics; 3) Abraham (Gen. 12, 1) as a biblical typos of monastic retreat to the Holy Land and of the spiritual xeniteia in the light of tropological and literal exegesis; 4) God’s love as a moral and mystical basis for living near the Holy City; 5) the importance of prayer at the holy places, participation in sacraments and rituals, and fasting as a preparation for encounter with the holy places; 6) moral and ascetic restrictions on living at the holy places. This analysis of moral-ascetical and exegetical topics within the theology of the holy places attested in hagiographical literature shows multiple traces of intertextuality, which enables us to state that this theological reflection is a manifestation of a coherent and living patristic tradition. The two parts of this article seek to show that the origins of this theology flow from liturgical and exegetical traditions, the practice of venerating the holy places, and the dogmatic, moral, and ascetic theology of Palestinian and other patristic authors of the Christian Mediterranean.

Abstract:
This paper reviews environmental management and the use of science in the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta during California’s 2012–2016 drought. The review is based on available reports and data, and guided by discussions with 27 agency staff, stake-holders, and researchers. Key management actions for the drought are discussed relative to four major drought water management priorities stated by water managers: support public health and safety, control saltwater intrusion, preserve cold water in Shasta Reservoir, and maintain minimum protections for endangered species. Despite some success in streamlining communication through interagency task forces, conflicting management mandates sometimes led to confusion about priorities and actions during the drought (i.e., water delivery, the environment, etc.). This report highlights several lessons and offers suggestions to improve management for future droughts. Recommendations include use of pre-drought warnings, timely drought declarations, improved transparency and useful documentation, better scientific preparation, development of a Delta drought management plan (including preparing for salinity barriers), and improved water accounting. Finally, better environmental outcomes occur when resources are applied to improving habitat and bolstering populations of native species during inter-drought periods, well before stressful conditions occur.
