Full textAll the desires to escape the cruel world of the reality in order to reach a spiritual and ideal world, all the desires of the absolute and the divine can be found at a very high level in Leconte de Lisle. In order to understand the impassibility of Leconte de Lisle and his haughty look, we must see him as he imagines him self, a poet priest. Leconte de Lisle founded a new religion of his, and by it be wished deeply become and immortal as a god and to take ages by his gospel which is his poetry. In this new religion, we turne back on the present, and we bury in the study of the dist ant past, and we will seeking for the formal beauty, in the origines of the primitives humanity. The poet, the priest of this new religion has a superior function, in the bosom of the humanity, that is to work as martyr of the present for the posterity. It’s also ralising the beauty, because, beauty of the artistic work makes its truth and its morality. In the new religion we offer sacrifices, because pain and suffering deify the man. We sacrifice our passions and love in order to die "from having loved too much". Also we glorify blood, who draws us the way of the absolute and the eternity. We glorify force, pride and virility. At last death is the ultimate end, the most sure way to win immortality and divinity. The holy book of this religion is an artistic work, a perfect poems and verses written after meditation and with measure

Full textWilliam Byrd's motets with Latin text are a little-known contribution to the sacred vocal repertoire. Most important among these works are three books of Cantiones Sacrae, published 1575, 1589 and 1591, respectively. The 1589 Cantiones Sacrae was Byrd's first harvest from a backlog of motets that had been accumulating since 1575. This collection lies at a midpoint between Byrd's earliest published works and his full maturity, as seen in the Masses of 1592--95.
This study will describe the contrapuntal strategies that characterize Byrd's 1589 Cantiones. I will examine Byrd's deeper-level tonal organization and its derivation from cantus firmus technique. I will show how Byrd uses musical material in cantus firmus values (the breve and semibreve) to shape his subject material and his cadence points, and how this shaping plays out over the course of an imitative point.
I will then examine Byrd's introductory gestures in the 1589 Cantiones, identifying 24 presentation types that characterize different degrees of beginning. These types contain one or more melodic subjects in a recurring temporal relationship, and form a vertical interval pattern or harmonic motive. Next, I will discuss Byrd's variation techniques by which he develops these presentation types: textural change, transposition, melodic inversion and invertible counterpoint. Byrd's presentation and variation of subject material divides an imitative point into distinct phases of tonal and contrapuntal activity, providing insight into its overall form and tonal design.
Finally, I will apply these analytical tools to a complete analysis of Tristitia et anxietas, from the 1589 Cantiones, thereby showing how Byrd establishes central pitches in the middleground. Through this analysis, I will summarize Byrd's contrapuntal strategies, both long-range and local, that typify his middle-period sacred vocal style, as viewed through the lens of the 1589 Cantiones Sacrae.

Full textBy combining a lexicological study of words relating to the sacred in the works of malraux, with an analysis of the network of recurring symboles which appear in certain textual sequences, this thesis illustrates the implicit at the same time explicit nature of the expression of the sacred of malraux. Historicaly speaking. The sacred evolves from its original state, which corresponds to the archaic phase of human history; it attains a "humanised" form which reflects man's aptitude to gain a mastery of that which is beyond his own existence. Expressed by artistic means, this manifestation shows the reflux of the sacred in proportion to the artist's confirmation of his individual values. This phenomen can be grasped by following the evolution of the sacred architectural space accompagnied by the humanisation of monumental sculpting. A second approach defines the sacred as an intrinsic element of human nature which is perpetuated in its original form by the inconscious mind in which it has its roots. Man must discipline the negative tendency of his nature so as to gain access to that consciousness which is the prerogative of his race. The malraux concept of the sacred is summed up in two parallel developments: one attested to by artistic forms in accordance with the transformation of feeling with regard to transcendency, and one expressed by the constitution of humanism from the revolutionary hero to the pacifist artist. The "temptation" of the sacred is understood in two ways: it follows the experiences lived by man when he shakes himself free from the alienating constraints of the primeval destiny of the world; it describes the conquering process wageg by the civilizing force whose mission is to create order from chaos. In its structure the work of malraux illustrates the permanence of this conquest which unfolds according to a contrapuntal scheme whose hidden model is furnished by le temps du mepris

The amazonic agroecosystems are part of the Amazon complex structure, with heterogeneous and diversified processes of human intelectual work practiced in the environment. These agroecosystems have temporo-spatial structures related to the lived environment and to the imaterial knowledge of the farmers which play an important role to make these unique and unrepeatable as a whole. This research aimed to undestand the conservational movement of life autopoiesis in Sacaí Environmental Complex, Caracaraí, Roraima, Brazil, starting from the anthitetic processes of social (re)production and life (re)programation. The theorical-methodological structure was based in the System to the Paradigm of Complexity responsible to give to the research the malleability needed to the comprehension of the real. The analytic categories were structured to the comprehension of this real, by the multiple cases design. Techniques as interview with previous guide, questionnaire census, focal groups, mental maps, sketches and photos were used. Fourty one (41) families were subject of this study. The results show that the agroecosystems in the Sacaí Environmental Complex emerge from the complementarity assuming the family organization and become undissociable in their recursive process of autopoiesis. They are, at the same time, a nuclear family, a troncal extensive family and a community extensive family, it constituting a family agroecosystems. The family agroecosystems are temporo-spatial delineated by the water pulse which are manifested by the dried and flooded landscape. The link between the feeling and the landscape is revealed through the organization in productions unit, as work places, which are linked to the environmental knowledge kept by the farmers. Therefore the work process diversity joined to the knowledge kept by the farmers are the base to the (re)production of the family agroecosystems in the Sacaí Environmental Complex. As part of this environmental system it was possible to reveal the insertion of new interactions promoted by the external action of the Sacaí Environmental Complex. In this sense the interactions between government actions and the agroecosystems are responsible to create a dialectical relation of (in)visibility. This relation regards to the possibility of the farmers to (re)program themselves in the system making visible only the necessary to their social reproduction keeping invisible what is responsible to conserve the autos in the (re)construction processes of the Sacaí Environmental Complex.

Full textEven though Sade’s reputation as an “athée exacerbé”(1) seems to dominate the critics, this dissertation argues that his atheism is not as obvious as it seems. Through an analysis of the correlation between language and religion in the marquis’ work, this study demonstrates that it is through his mistrust of language that Sade presents his ideas. While his libertines seem to profess the superiority of atheism, their discourse is undermined by their rhetoric. Through the use of sophisms, Sade is able to present the dispute between philosophers and apologists, which dominated the second half of the XVIII century, as sterile. The presentation of the libertines’ materialist ideas is equally problematic since the moral relativism they express is incompatible with the foundation of the Enlightenment’s ethical values. Moreover, Sade’s libertine novels profess the refusal of any acknowledgment of an ethic based solely on men, while his pessimism towards human nature puts him closer to the apologists. By undermining the foundations of any secular ethic, Sade places himself against both philosophers and apologists who, for once, agreed on the idea that virtue was the truest way to happiness.
Sade’s novels therefore undermine both apologists and philosophers’ ideas by showing their contradictions. By presenting all of the prevailing religious thoughts of his time, Sade multiplies them in order to reduce them to binary notions that ultimately cancel each other out. Sade uses atheism to underscore the contradictions of his time. He presents a world in which all reference points have disappeared and in which every discourse seems to be a deception waiting to be exposed. Confronted with the unequivocal representations of both the philosophers and the apologists, whether triumphant or disparaging, Sade proves that one needs to push back with skepticism.
The discourse on religion in Sade’s work could therefore be summed-up by the dying man: “You compose, you construct, you dream, you magnify and complicate; I sift, I simplify. You accumulate errors, pile one atop the other; I combat them all”(2).

Full textFrancesco Cavalli was the most renowned composer of opera in seventeenth-century Venice. Though Cavalli's operas have enjoyed a surge in popularity and interest in recent years, his sacred works remain largely unknown. Cavalli published only a small portion of his compositional output, and his Musiche Sacre Concernenti of 1656 contains the largest source of his acred music in concertato style, representing a fusion of his sacred and secular compositional worlds. The purpose of this study is threefold. The first is to provide a modern performing edition of each motet governed by the same editorial principles that will serve scholars and performers by providing a performing edition based on the Gesamtausgabe tradition of complete works of a single composer. The second is to explore the musical, liturgical, and historical context and significance of his motets as pertains to executing an informed performance. The third is to promote the music of Francesco Cavalli in general. The motets of the collection include eleven psalms, five hymns, the Magnificat, and the four Marion antiphons, employable in various Vesper services of the liturgical year. Part I of this study will serve as the Critical Commentary to the edition. Chapter 1 examines Cavalli's life and work. Chapter 2 contains analyses of the motets. Chapter 3 discusses the liturgical contexts of the motets as well as the historical background of the collection in relation to Seicento Venice. Chapter 4 explores issues of performance practice such as ensemble size, voicing, the appropriate choice of instruments, pitch center, continuo practice, tempo, metric relationships, coronas, dynamics, and missing verses. Part II will present the performing edition of each motet in full score with a critical report. Sources and editorial methods will be discussed, and detailed critical notes will be provided. Appendices including the motets' texts, translations, and instrumental parts are provided.

Full textThe aim of the dissertation is to analyze the prose of the modern Italian writer Erri De Luca through the lens of biblical motifs and references, which bind his works together. Such references to biblical sources are the key to understanding and interpreting the author's writings, which, despite their multifaceted character, nonetheless remain grounded in biblical-literary imagery; one rich in references rooted in the human imagination since centuries past. The term imagery encompasses the entire set of biblical images including symbols, metaphors, comparisons, motifs, and archetypes. The analysis of De Luca's writings consists in foregrounding those images which constitute the fundamental elements of the narration both in the case of biblical authors, as in the case of the Neapolitan writer himself. The dissertation comprises four parts. Chapter One attempts to present the general framework of biblical references in modern Italian literature in the form of a short description of the themes and motifs taken up by Italian poets and prose writers alike. Furthermore, the chapter discusses and exemplifies the main tendencies in literary references to biblical imagery, which will then allow us to observe the ways in which De Luca's works partake in the larger body of 20th century Italian literature with visible biblical influences. Despite his declared lack of religious faith, the Neapolitan writer not only decodes the metaphorical sense of the Bible, but also adopts the Bible as the framework for his writings, thus creating a personal, unified, and unique biblical-literary universe. Chapter Two includes a short biographical note on the writer with a strong emphasis on those aspects of his life which are reflected in his writings. And because such references are numerous indeed, they comprise one of the two macrotexts that the writer refers to in his poetics, i.e. the life (vita) macrotext. This section also presents keywords introduced by De Luca himself. It can be assumed that the author wanted to point his readers and critics to a specific method of reading and interpreting his art. The first keyword of this kind refers to the concept of a longing for the return to the source, which is tied to reflections on the so-called other possibility (altra possibilità) and one's alienation from the exterior world. The later part of the chapter describes the author's political engagement and reflects on the meaning that De Luca ascribes to the word non-believer (non-credente), which the author uses to describe his personal approach to religion. Chapter Three describes the author's interest in reading, translating, and interpreting the Bible, starting with his interest for Jewish history and culture, the roots of which may be traced back to De Luca's study of the Hebrew language. The author undertook the study in order to be able to read biblical texts in their original language, which, in turn, has led him to acquaint himself with Cabalistic practices, enabling him to employ his own biblical exegesis. The chapter then provides an overview of De Luca's own translations of selected biblical texts, a distinguishing feature of which is the author's attempt to remain as faithful as possible to the original text. In this regard, De Luca treats the Italian language as a mere tool and does not consider the process of translation to be an end in and of itself. For this reason, the dissertation treats his translations as a “connector” of sorts, as well as a stepping stone in the journey from the source text to writing itself – more so in a conceptual sense than a temporal sense. The further part of the chapter will consist of an analysis of those of De Luca's works which could be described as “rewriting” biblical tales (riscritture), a process which is not only considered to be a distinct kind of translation, but even the next stage in the work of the translator

Full textNovelists writing about the sacred in french-speaking black africa depict, in a vast religious fresco, black peoples searching for their identity and their soul. The scenes go back to the time of slavery ; they show the paths of slaves from the african continent long before colonisation, and those of migrating tribes in sub-saharan areas. The work reveals that by organising themselves into tribues, black peoples' kingdoms or their empires have developped, in the practice of animism, on the one hand a belief in a supreme god, the unseen creator, and on the other hand a faith in divinities very closely related to men, which recall those of ancient egypt. Worshipping of these gods entails rituals, the purpose of which is to prevent the total extinction of black african peoples, but it involves also descending into hell, realm of powers harmfull to man's progress. Eventually, muslims and later christians, attempt to demonstrate the truth of their religious to these black peoples. The latter undergo conversion and in their turn undertake the task of purification of the practice of the two religious. From this drama there emerges a movement towards the liberation of the self so as to bring about the triumph of a universal religion, that of love, solidarity and brotherhood
