Abstract:
Background/aims: Elevation of plasma sulfur-containing amino acids (SAAs) is generally associated with higher body mass index (BMI) and unfavorable lipid profiles. It is not known how dietary SAAs relate to these associations in humans. Methods: A convenient tool named internet-based dietary questionnaire for Chinese (IDQC) was used to estimate dietary SAAs intake. A total of 936 participants were randomly recruited and asked to complete the IDQC. Furthermore, 90 subjects were randomly selected to perform a subgroup study. The associations between dietary SAAs and prevalence of obesity, lipid profiles, and status of insulin resistance (IR), inflammation and oxidative stress were assessed. Results: Dietary total SAAs and cysteine of overweight/obese participants were significantly higher. Dietary total SAAs and cysteine were positively associated with BMI and waist circumference. Higher dietary total SAAs were associated with higher prevalence of overweight/obesity. Higher dietary total SAAs and cysteine also associated with higher serum triglyceride (total cholesterol), low density lipoprotein, fasting blood glucose, 2 h-postprandial glucose, and homeostasis model assessment of IR. In the subgroup study, positive associations between dietary SAAs and inflammation biomarkers were also observed. Conclusions: Dietary SAAs are associated with higher prevalence of overweight/obesity, unfavorable lipid profiles and status of IR, and inflammation.

Abstract:
Abstract— The acceleration of digital transformation in the industrial revolution 4.0 triggered by Cloud Computing created an expansion of the commercialization of IT services. SaaS ERP is one of the fastest growing cloud computing services and is a solution for SMEs. Although SaaS ERP uses a cloud base, it turns out that not all vendors provide uniform services. The difference in the services provided depends on the differences in Metadata, Security and shared services. These different services can be classified in 4 SaaS maturity levels consisting of level 1: Custom/Ad Hoc, level 2: Configurable, 3: Standardization/Multi-Tenant, and level 4: Scalable and Multi-tenant. The current research on measuring SaaS ERP adoption readiness has not considered this maturity level, even though this difference will have a different impact on each adoption factor. Continuing from the previous research which formulated the factors and weights of adoption, the purpose of this study is to understand the considerations of SMEs in adopting SaaS ERP that is deployed at different maturity levels. By using expert judgment, an assessment rubric is created for each factor at each maturity level. The expert assessment produces a range maturity index which is combined with the weight of each factor to assess the maturity level of SMEs' readiness to adopt SaaS ERP. The assessment rubric developed with expert validation and SMEs can be use as a tool to measure the maturity level of SMEs' readiness to adopt SaaS ERP Keywords— Adoption Readiness, Expert Judgement, ERP, SaaS ERP, SMEs, SaaS Maturity Level

Abstract:
As many software applications have moved from a desktop software deployment model to a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model so we have seen tool vendors in the language service industry move to a SaaS model, e.g., for web-based Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) tools. However, many of these offerings fail to take full advantage of the Open Web Platform, i.e., the rich set of web browser-based APIs linked to HTML5. We examine the interoperability landscape that developers of web-based translation tools can benefit from, and in particular the potential offered by the open metadata defined in the W3C’s (World Wide Web Consortium) recent Internationalization Tag Set v2.0 Recommendation. We examine how this can be used in conjunction with the XML Localisation Interchange File Format (XLIFF) standardized by OASIS to exchange translation jobs between servers and Javascript-based CAT tools running in the web browser. We also explore how such open metadata can support activities in the multilingual web processing chain before and after translation.

Among the three online landslide databases introduced here, we focus on Japan’s large-scale online landslide topography distribution mapping as a gratis Software as a Service (SaaS) application that has proven effective in hazard mapping because many large new landslides have recurred at old landslide sites. Google Earth is an effective SaaS hazardmapping tool for extracting local community landslide microtopography. Combining these maps and handwritten landslide site drawings provides economical, reliable hazard maps for community residents in developing and developed countries. Author proposed a possibility of undergraduate students volunteer acitivties for promoting hazard mapping. The early warning system based on Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) and the Japanese soil-water index (SWI) may contribute to making society more resilient against landslide disasters.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic related government interventions produced rapid decreases in worldwide economic and social activity, with multifaceted economic and social consequences. In particular, the disruption of key industries and significant lifestyle changes in the aftermath of the pandemic outbreak led to the exponential adoption of web and video conferencing Software as a Service (SaaS) programs and to the solutions-led video conferencing market growth. However, the magnitude and persistence of the COVID-19 pandemic impact on the video conferencing solutions segment remain uninvestigated. Building on previous evidence linking population web-search behavior, private consumption, and retail sales, this study sources and employs Google Trends data as an analytical and forecasting tool for the solutions segment of the videoconferencing market. It implements a univariate forecast evaluation approach that assesses the predictive performance of several statistical and machine-learning models for the relative search volume (RSV) in the two SaaS program leaders, Zoom and Teams. ETS is found to provide the best forecast of consumer GT search interest for both RSV series. A baseline level for the consumer interest over the first pandemic wave is subsequently produced with ETS and further serves to estimate the excess search interest over the February 2020–August 2020 period. Results indicate that the pandemic has created an excess or abnormal consumer interest in the global web and videoconferencing SaaS market that would not have occurred in the absence of the pandemic. Other findings indicate that the impact is persistent as the excess interest stabilized at higher levels than in the pre-pandemic period for both SaaS market leaders, although a higher saturation of the Zoom market is detected.

Abstract:
Digital technology has become an integral part of our daily lives, but it has a significant environmental impact, particularly in terms of energy consumption, greenhouse gas production, electronic waste, water and air pollution, deforestation, and biodiversity loss. Organizations are becoming aware of their environmental responsibility and are seeking to reduce their carbon footprint related to information systems. To help organizations manage their IS carbon footprint, this thesis proposes a decision support framework based on a detailed modeling of the environmental impact of the information system. This framework identifies the most effective actions to reduce the environmental impact of the IS, taking into account the operational and financial constraints of the organizations. The WeNR tools are presented as concrete applications of this decision support framework, which allow measuring the environmental impact of the IS within organizations and proposing concrete measures to reduce it. Finally, the author presents the prospects of a responsible digital SaaS decision support tool that would automatically collect data on the organization’s digital carbon footprint, analyze it, propose specific actions to reduce it, and provide key environmental performance indicators

Sidhu, Sabeena. "Small angle x-ray scattering as a diagnostic tool for breast cancer." Monash University. Faculty of Science. Monash Centre for Synchrotron Science, 2009. http://arrow.monash.edu.au/hdl/1959.1/73839.

Full text
Abstract:
Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in Australian women. Current pathological analysis examines a small section of tissue for cellular and plasma abnormalities using a light microscope. However, this method of diagnosis, despite being the current gold standard, has its limitations, where human error and professional experience can influence a patient’s diagnosis. A potential alternative or adjunct to conventional histopathology for classifying tissue disease status is offered by Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS). At the time of commencement of this work, there had been several small scale studies which examined the potential of SAXS to classify the disease status of breast tissue. These tended to focus on the supramolecular structure of collagen fibrils found in the breast, where it is known that the degradation of these fibres is related to the spread of disease. Most previous studies also used a synchrotron as an X-ray source, due to the intense and highly collimated flux available. This study used a synchrotron source, but also evaluated the use of a laboratory X-ray source, as a more convenient and relatively inexpensive alternative that could one day find application in the clinic. The work presented in this thesis analyses the largest cohort of patients and breast tissue samples studied to date using SAXS: 130 patients with 543 tissue samples. Tissues were sourced from surgical waste and classified into four groups: invasive carcinoma, benign, normal, and mammoplasty. Mammoplasty tissue samples were harvested from patients undergoing breast reduction and/or reconstruction, where no history or presence of disease was indicated. Normal tissue was sampled from patients with known disease, but pathological analysis of the tissue core diagnosed it as normal. A comprehensive analysis of the scattering patterns was carried out, analysing features arising from the collagen structure and orientation, the total scattered intensity, and adipose tissue in the breast. Features related to the axial D-spacing of the collagen fibrils within the breast tissue as well as the integrated scattering intensity (called amorphous scatter) demonstrated the highest ability to discriminate tissue types, in SAXS images acquired from both the synchrotron source and the laboratory X-ray source. The amorphous scatter intensities obtained using a synchrotron source showed highly significant differences (p < 0.01) for almost all of the tissue pair comparisons: invasive carcinoma vs. benign, invasive carcinoma vs. normal, invasive carcinoma vs. mammoplasty, benign vs. mammoplasty, and normal vs. mammoplasty. However, no significant difference was seen in the amorphous scatter between benign versus normal tissues (p = 0.30). The amorphous scatter values increased with severity of disease, i.e. it was the highest for invaded tissues and decreased progressively from benign to normal to mammoplasty. There was a significant difference between normal and mammoplasty tissue types using the amorphous scatter as a discriminator (p = 0.0025). Pathological assessment cannot differentiate between these two tissue types, which suggests that there may be changes occurring in these tissue structures at the supramolecular level that can be characterised using SAXS. The ability of SAXS to reveal structural differences between normal and mammoplasty tissue types is highly significant, for both disease diagnosis and treatment, as well as for understanding disease progression. For example, these differences might aid in determining surgical margin clearance of excised breast lesions as well as potentially provide a means of pre-screening or perhaps improve false-negative rates of diagnosis. The potential of SAXS to reveal macroscopic extent and directional spread of disease was explored using two-dimensional mapping of the amorphous scatter. These maps showed broad agreement with histopathological diagnosis, but further investigation regarding their reliability and interpretation for clinical utility is still needed. Changes in both the amorphous scatter and the axial D- spacing were seen in tissue samples up to 6 cm away from the primary site of disease. In particular, a significant decrease in both parameters was seen between the centre of the tumour (at 0 cm) and 2 cm away, suggesting that closer examination of the tissue structures over the disease/healthy tissue border may provide information regarding the mechanisms of metastasis and growth of cancerous tumours. The combination of the amorphous scattering results from the two X-ray sources indicates that the size of the scatterers may be the key in classifying tissue types. The synchrotron source was able to access a lower q-range (q = 0.1-0.6 nm-1) and the laboratory source covered a larger q-range (q = 0.25-2.3 nm-1). Mammoplasty tissues appear to be characterised by large scattering components (d > 25.13 nm), whereas normal tissues are characterised by slightly smaller scattering components (10.47 nm < d < 25.13 nm) and benign tissues by even smaller scattering components (4.83 < d < 10.47 nm). It appears that the size of the scatterers contributing to the total scattering intensity decreases with severity of disease, which was seen independently with both X-ray sources. Further investigation is warranted to determine the biological origin of these differences. These results also suggest that the optimum SAXS instrument may need to cover a scattering vector range of q < 0.25 nm-1 to identify differences in healthy tissue types, and q > 2.3 nm-1 to possibly investigate invasive carcinoma tissue types. A SAXS apparatus that can examine a large q-range may provide all of the necessary information from the amorphous scatter to differentiate between tissue groups. The periodic structure of collagen fibrils along their longitudinal axis can be characterised by the axial D-spacing, where this spacing was found to change with the presence of disease. The axial D-spacing for healthy breast tissues was found to be significantly lower in normal and mammoplasty tissues compared to invaded tissues (p = 0.0050 and p = 0.0093, respectively). However, no significant differences between the other tissue group pairs were seen (p > 0.05). These differences were evident in classification modelling of the four tissue groups, where the amorphous scatter and the amplitude of a collagen axial peak were used to build a probability model for disease status. The model showed high sensitivities (> 70%) and widely variable specificities (ranged from 18-97%) for the data examined with the synchrotron source. This means that the model was a good indicator of disease, but poor at indentifying healthy tissue types. The work presented in this thesis shows that SAXS is capable of distinguishing breast tissue types with high sensitivity and has the potential to become a significant tool for the investigation of cancer progression or even diagnosis. Further investigation into the amorphous scatter and axial D-spacing in particular may provide insight into the biological mechanisms related to tissue degradation associated with invasive disease.

Abstract:

To detect network changes and network troubles, Transpondertech needs a tool that can make network measurements.

The purpose of this thesis has been to find measurable network properties that best reflect the status of a network, to find methods to measure these proerties and to implement these methods in one single tool. The resulting tool is called NetworkPerf and can measure the following network properties: availability, round-trip delay, delay variation, number of hops, intermediate hosts, available bandwidth, available ports, and maximum allowed packet size. Together, these properties give a good picture of the status of a network connection.

The thesis also presents the methods used for meassuring these properties in the tool.

Mansoor, Younus Ahmed. "A critical analysis of the reference pricing tool used by SARS to address undervaluation of imported clothing." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1020755.

Full text
Abstract:
The South African Revenue Service has since 2009 introduced “reference pricing” as a tool to detect undervaluation of customs values of imported clothing and textiles. The term “reference pricing” is not defined in the Customs and Excise Act No.91 of 1964 which is the legislation that governs the importation of goods into the Republic of South Africa. The mandate of the South African Revenue Service, amongst others, is to facilitate legitimate trade. By applying the reference pricing guidelines the South African Revenue Service will target all importers who declare customs values which are less than the reference price for a targeted tariff heading associated with an item of clothing or textile. The Customs and Excise Act No.91 of 1964 is clear in that the transaction value which is the price paid or payable for the imported goods shall be the value used for customs duty purposes. The Customs and Excise Act No.91 of 1964 also requires that the interpretation of the sections 65, 66 and 67 of the said Act shall be subject to the Agreement on Implementation of Article VII of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1994 (Valuation Agreement). Part I of the Valuation Agreement deals with the rules for customs valuation. Article 17 of part 1 allows for customs administrations to satisfy themselves as to the truth or accuracy of any statement, document or declaration presented for customs valuation purposes. The Technical Committee on Customs Valuation of the World Trade Organisation decided the following in so far as Article 17 of the aforesaid agreement is concerned: “1. When a declaration has been presented and where the customs administration has reason to doubt the truth or accuracy of the particulars or of documents produced in support of this declaration, the customs administration may ask the importer to provide further explanation, including documents or other evidence, that the declared value represents the total amount actually paid or payable for the imported goods, ....” It would appear that the South African Revenue Service is using reference prices as a tool to support its reason for doubting the truth or accuracy of the declared customs values. The indiscriminate use of reference pricing, it is submitted, affects legitimate trade adversely. This treatise provides an understanding of how the customs value should be determined in terms of the Customs and Excise Act No.91 of 1964 and the Valuation Agreement. It then provides a background to reference pricing and how reference pricing will be used to detect undervalued imports of clothing and textiles, the advantages and disadvantages of using reference pricing and a comparative analysis of the approach adopted by the Mexican Tax Administration Service in so far as the use of reference pricing is concerned. It was established that the reference price cannot replace the customs value of an imported clothing item as the customs value is based on the price actually paid or payable for it and not on some arbitrary or fictitious value. The reference price can only be used as a tool to identify importers that are possibly undervaluing the customs values. The disadvantages far outweigh the advantages of using reference pricing. The treatise further provides a background to the use of a valuation database as a risk assessment tool and compares this to the use of reference pricing. The use of reference pricing and its impact on trade facilitation is then discussed as well as whether the use of reference pricing is consistent with the risk management principles as discussed in the World Customs Organisation Risk Management Guide. It was established that the South African Revenue Service has not disclosed the basis of arriving at the reference price per tariff heading that it targets and the use of reference pricing is not sanctioned by any international guideline or agreement. It was also established that the use of reference pricing targets compliant importers unnecessarily and this practice goes against the principles of trade facilitation. The use of reference pricing can be used as a tool to detect undervalued imports of clothing but should not be used as a basis to stop every consignment of clothing simply because the customs value declared is less than the reference price. It should not be used as a stand-alone tool but rather enhanced further with the recommendations provided. In the final analysis, recommendations are provided which seek to enhance the reference pricing mechanism and to further identify and exclude compliant importers and limit the use of reference pricing to target non-compliant importers who undervalue the customs value of imported clothing and textile items.

Abstract:

This abstract describes the bachelor degree thesis in computer technology at Växjö University. At the company BSR in Växjö, Sweden there is a new project under development called BSR Diagnostic Tool. The main idea is to use a hardware class for communication instead of the diagnostic tools that are provided by the car manufactures. In object-oriented programming, a class is a programming language construct that is used as a blueprint to create objects. The task was to implement this hardware class which will handle the communication between a computer and the control units in the vehicles. The report also includes a big theoretical part about the communication bus that is used, CAN. The objective was to create the class and make it communicate successfully with a Saab. The testing of the class was done with a simple program. The program can send a question to the vehicle and retrieve an answer with help of the hardware class. BSR provided a diagram with functions that should be present. The development of the system was done using C# and .NET Environment. The company was satisfied with the results since they provided a good basis to further development of BSR Diagnostic Tool.

Full text
Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 139-150.
The South African Scoring System (SASS) is a rapid bioassessment technique based on one component of riverine biotas, the benthic macroinvertebrates. Each taxon is assigned a tolerance/sensitivity score, which are summed to provide a Total Score. The Average Score per Taxon (ASPT) is calculated by dividing this Total Score by the number of taxa. This study was undertaken to evaluate the SASS technique as a tool for the assessment of water quality. Three study-sites, which differed in water quality, in the south-western Cape were selected for a detailed investigation into sample variability and replication of two methods of biological assessment, namely quantitative box-sampling and SASS. The ability of each method to differentiate between these sites was determined. The more general application of SASS in the south-western Cape was examined at forty nine sites and potential problems associated with SASS, namely biotope availability, temporal variability and longitudinal changes were investigated. A minimum of twelve and four quantitative samples is needed to ensure collection of 95% or 75% of benthic macroinvertebrate taxa respectively. Sampling within a single biotope component, such as a "riffle" or "run" would reduce the number of samples needed. A minimum of four and two SASS samples is needed to ensure collection of 95% or 75% of the taxa respectively. This technique is however designed such that only one sample is taken per site. The Total Score that one sample would produce as a percentage of the Total Score from 20 samples, were 28% , 59% and 45% for Sites 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Total Score increases with increasing sampling effort, whilst ASPT is relatively unaffected by sampling effort. ASPT should therefore be used in interpretation of scores. Variability, as determined by both quantitative sampling and rapid bioassessment, was greatest at the least impacted site. Such sites should be more intensively sampled, either by increasing the number of box- samples taken, or by increasing the time period for SASS sampling.

Abstract:
AbstractNucleic acid therapeutics is a growing field aiming to treat human conditions that has gained special attention due to the successful development of mRNA vaccines against SARS-CoV-2. Another type of nucleic acid therapeutics is antisense oligonucleotides, versatile tools that can be used in multiple ways to target pre-mRNA and mRNA. While some years ago these molecules were just considered a useful research tool and a curiosity in the clinical market, this has rapidly changed. These molecules are promising strategies for personalized treatments for rare genetic diseases and they are in development for very common disorders too. In this chapter, we provide a brief description of the different mechanisms of action of these RNA therapeutic molecules, with clear examples at preclinical and clinical stages.

Abstract:
In this article, I assess the prospects for the limitarian thesis that someone has too much wealth if they exceed a specific wealth threshold. Limitarianism claims that there are good political and/or ethical reasons to prevent people from having such ‘surplus wealth’, for example, because it has no moral value for the holder or because allowing people to have surplus wealth has less moral value than redistributing it. Drawing on recent literature on distributive justice, I defend two types of limitarian principles of justice. First, limitarian midlevel principles draw on the limitarian thesis to specify normative commitments for guiding institutional design and individual actions. Second, the limitarian presumption draws on that thesis to specify what a just allocation of wealth requires under epistemic constraints. Such a presumption says that without substantive reasons to the contrary, we should regard a distribution as unjust if some people’s wealth exceeds the limitarian threshold. Furthermore, I will argue that we must reject a possible but implausible interpretation of limitarianism as an ideal distributive pattern. Yet both as a midlevel principle and as a presumption, limitarianism can play an important role in theorizing about justice in the real world.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objective of this manuscript is to devise an objective, scientific and empirical tool for assessing the ‘life cycle cost’ of any digitalization project in an Exploration and Production (E&P) Company vise-a-vie its ‘projected benefits’. This provides a ready-made empirically proven tool for the CIO or Project Manager of the E&P Company to decide on the ‘financial model’ for an upcoming digital project during the conceptualization stage when there's a long debate amidst the project team or the user indenting group regarding CAPEX or OPEX or Hybrid Model for the digital project implementation. With the advent of cloud platform and SaaS platform, various exciting avenues have opened up for companies to implement digitalization solution in OPEX model where the upfront investment is very less. Moreover, most of the R&D in this domain around the industry is keeping cloud servers in mind resulting in breakthrough digitalization innovation opportunities for E&P companies at a very nominal cost. However, there is a different narrative as well which signifies the advantages of owning the system(s). This manuscript has tried to settle this long-standing debate. This manuscript develops a table with a total scoring out of 100 marks with weighted average given to the different factors or parameters. This is a multi-dimensional scoring system developed keeping various factors and scenarios in mind. This also takes into factorization whether the digitalization project under discussion is of transformational nature or incremental nature. This also has a scenario to pick from exploration / drilling / reservoir/well/production/pipeline or complete Digital oilfield project scenario which leads to a different customized scoring pattern. The user has to select various scenarios and factors in the checklist of two pages according to which the scoring pattern is decided for them leading to a customized scoring, hence decision-making tool for them. Apart from the checklist, user has to enter the estimated project cost over lifecycle and range of gain in the checklist too.

Abstract:
Abstract Pipeline integrity management continues to adapt and improve with the adoption of new technologies. In 2016, Husky Midstream had a loss of containment incident on a 16-inch diameter pipeline on the south slope of the North Saskatchewan River in Saskatchewan, Canada. The incident was determined to be caused by ground movement resulting from a landslide complex. The landslide complex on the south slope contains two deep-seated compound basal shear slides as well as a near surface translational slide in low strength clay shales. A robust state-of-the-art instrumentation monitoring program was implemented that included real-time geotechnical instrumentation, high fidelity distributed fiber optic sensing (HDS), repeat ILI and on-site weather data to identify, evaluate and monitor areas of ground and pipeline movement so that potential impacts to the pipelines could be mitigated. An early-warning system that included alarm thresholds was developed that identified when to proactively shut-in the pipeline. The HDS monitoring comprised strain, acoustic and temperature sensing, and was installed to provide leak detection monitoring, however, it revealed an excellent correlation to the geotechnical, ILI and weather station monitoring data on the actively moving landslide complex. This paper shows a number of these correlations over the HDS monitoring period from October 2017 to November 2018. The HDS monitoring showed increased strain magnitudes following significant rainfall events that correlated to an acceleration in slope inclinometer (SIs fitted with shape accelerometer arrays, SAAs) and survey monument (SM) movement. Locations of high strain accumulation correlated to ILI locations of bending strain. Accumulated strain and displacements in SAAs and SMs were measured despite the lack of visual evidence of ground cracking on the right-of-way (ROW). Construction activity on the ROW was detected through acoustic and strain signatures. As pipeline operators continue to include high fidelity fiber optic sensing as a continuous linear sensor along new and existing pipelines primarily as a leak detection tool, other critical applications, such as early detection of active landslides can be included as an important component of the integrity management system or separately as part of a robust monitoring system.

Abstract:
Abstract Technical engineering applications have long been an important tool for engineers in the well design process. The nature of being on-prem in individual devices has posed several issues, where lengthy installation processes often lead to a large amount of time consumption and disrupts the engineers’ work efficiency. As the industry moves into the era of digitalization, the Wells on Cloud solution is introduced. The migration of current on-prem applications into a SaaS Cloud-based solution aims to mitigate the issues encountered by users via the elimination of installation processes and automatic push updates. The WoC solution aligns with Wells Digital Roadmap to act as a central hub and a single source of truth while focusing on three key principles. It aspires to cater to solutions from different vendors, capitalize on established Cloud-based infrastructure to host the solution platform and facilitate data transparency. Being a Cloud-based solution, all updates can be implemented and pushed to the user's devices, and users can access their data with a device anytime and anywhere. Direct links to the Open-End Community are incorporated into the solution. Moving on, the WoC's security system consists of active detection of anomalies, protecting against these issues, and comprehensive strategies to respond to any potential breakdown. To measure the value creation resulting from this initiative, the quantitative process cycle efficiency and qualitative feedback survey are conducted. PCE improvements demonstrated the timeline improvement brought by this solution, along with the positive comments shared by heavy users of these applications. The successful deployment of the Wells on Cloud solution has equipped engineers with the tools to unlock the full capability of technical engineering applications right at their fingertips. It also opened the avenues for business agility and scalability to match business requirements, reducing the Total Cost of Ownership and leading to savings. This solution sets the path for Cloud-based working and drives the industry to move towards digitally enabled businesses.

Abstract:
This Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering Technical Note (CHETN) describes the continuing efforts towards incorporating rapid tidal time-series reconstruction and prediction capabilities into the Coastal Hazards System (CHS) and the Stochastic Storm Simulation System (StormSim). The CHS (Nadal-Caraballo et al. 2020) is a national effort for the quantification of coastal storm hazards, including a database and web tool (https://chs.erdc.dren.mil) for the deployment of results from the Probabilistic Coastal Hazard Analysis (PCHA) framework. These PCHA products are developed from regional studies such as the North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study (NACCS) (Nadal-Caraballo et al. 2015; Cialone et al. 2015) and the ongoing South Atlantic Coast Study (SACS). The PCHA framework considers hazards due to both tropical and extratropical cyclones, depending on the storm climatology of the region of interest. The CHS supports feasibility studies, probabilistic design of coastal structures, and flood risk management for coastal communities and critical infrastructure. StormSim (https://stormsim.erdc.dren.mil) is a suite of tools used for statistical analysis and probabilistic modeling of historical and synthetic storms and for stochastic design and other engineering applications. One of these tools, the Coastal Hazards Rapid Prediction System (CHRPS) (Torres et al. 2020), can perform rapid prediction of coastal storm hazards, including real-time hurricane-induced flooding. This CHETN discusses the quantification and validation of the Advanced Circulation (ADCIRC) tidal constituent database (Szpilka et al. 2016) and the tidal reconstruction program Unified Tidal analysis (UTide) (Codiga 2011) in the Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands (PR/USVI) coastal regions. The new methodology discussed herein will be further developed into the Rapid Tidal Reconstruction (RTR) tool within the StormSim and CHS frameworks.

Full text
Abstract:
The majority of UK food recalls are due to allergen mislabelling, misleading allergen claims and/or the unintentional presence of allergens – representing a significant food safety risk and cost to industry. Labelling legislation must be followed to ensure food is safe and what it says it is, and this requires good allergen management and accurate allergen information communication down the supply chain. Distilling this information accurately, to inform labelling and/or communication of allergen information, can be particularly challenging for small to medium food businesses due to the low adoption of advanced labelling technology. In November 2018, a joint FSA/EIT (European Institute of Innovation & Technology) workshop discussed potential solutions to tackling the increase in food allergen mislabelling incidents. It was concluded that the situation could be improved by developing accessible and affordable tools for food businesses, to aid in the automation of food data collection, validation and management. As a result, the FSA are funding this initial development project that aims to develop an online system targeted at small and medium-sized food businesses, to help reduce the number of product recalls due to allergen mislabelling. The tool is also predicted to support more reliable knowledge transfer and incident tracking when things do go wrong.

Abstract:
The objective of this project was to determine if portable friction testers could be used for friction measurements on compacted snow and ice surfaces. First, the effect of cold temperatures on the operation, consistency, and accuracy of commercially available portable pavement friction measuring tools was evaluated. Tests entailed a series of experiments in a controlled cold room environment. Two portable fixed slip continuous measurement devices and one deceleration spot measurement device were evaluated. The controlled temperature testing determined how ambient temperature and duration of exposure can affect results, but that with care, the devices could be operated in conditions as cold as ˗25°C. This was followed by using one of the devices on outdoor testing on snow, ice, and asphalt surfaces and compared the portable tester to the well-known SAAB vehicle runway friction tester. Results showed good agreement between the portable tester and the SAAB Friction tester, providing validation for the operational use of a portable tester on frozen surfaces.

Eisemann, Eve, Catherine Thomas, Matthew Balazik, Damarys Acevedo-Mackey, and Safra Altman. Environmental factors affecting coastal and estuarine submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV). Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), October 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/42185.

Full text
Abstract:
Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) growing in estuarine and coastal marine systems provides crucial ecosystem functions ranging from sediment stabilization to habitat and food for specific species. SAV systems, however, are sensitive to a number of environmental factors, both anthropogenic and natural. The most common limiting factors are light limitation, water quality, and salinity, as reported widely across the literature. These factors are controlled by a number of complex processes, however, varying greatly between systems and SAV populations. This report seeks to conduct an exhaustive examination of factors influencing estuarine and coastal marine SAV habitats and find the common threads that tie these ecosystems together. Studies relating SAV habitats in the United States to a variety of factors are reviewed here, including geomorphological and bathymetric characteristics, sediment dynamics, sedimentological characteristics, and water quality, as well as hydrologic regime and weather. Tools and methods used to assess each of these important factors are also reviewed. A better understanding of fundamental environmental factors that control SAV growth will provide crucial information for coastal restoration and engineering project planning in areas populated by SAVs.
