Abstract:
Abstract There is overwhelming evidence that “pop culture” depictions of age-related losses are primarily negative, ignoring positive adaptive experiences associated with the second half of life. Unfortunately, film as an entertainment medium often creates and reinforces this negative status quo. This presentation describes the usefulness of the Baltes and Baltes S.O.C. Model for offsetting losses – via narrowing and revision of goal priorities (Selection), locating and enhancing resources to achieve positive outcomes (Optimization), and using these to increase one’s personal limits and reserve capacities (Compensation). In addition, positive “S.O.C. Solutions” (Spiehs, 2018) are illustrated for everyday loss scenarios within four new documentary films. These include positive adaptations to four loss domains – personal autonomy (driving), physical capacity (sexual responsiveness), psychological well-being (loneliness and belonging), and environmental destruction (place dependency). Annotated sources will be made available.

Abstract:
Test arranging is a basic issue in structure on-a-chip (S.O.C) experiment mechanization. Capable investigation designs constrain the general organization check request time, keep away from analysis reserve conflicts, in addition to purpose of restriction control disseminating in the midst of examination manner. In this broadsheet, we absent a fused method to manage a couple of test arranging issues. We first present a system to choose perfect timetables for sensibly evaluated SOC’s among need associations, i.e., plans that spare alluring orderings among tests. This furthermore acquaints a capable heuristic estimation with plan examinations designed for enormous S.O.Cs through need necessities in polynomial occasion. We portray a narrative figuring with the purpose of uses pre-emption of tests to secure capable date-books in favour of SOCs. Exploratory marks on behalf of an educational S-O-C plus a cutting edge SOC exhibit with the aim of capable investigation timetables be able to subsist gained in sensible CPU occasion.

BELLENZIER, LUCIA. "Dynamics in Financial Networks." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10281/49111.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this work is to examine the dynamics in financial networks. We propose two cases of study: the network of world's stock exchanges and the network of Interlocking Directorates in Italy. In the first case we study the dynamics on the network and in the second one the dynamics of the network, i.e. in the first case the network topology does not change and we study the dynamic information that passes through the structure, instead, in the second case, we study how the network topology evolves over time. In 'Prices-Quakes Shaking the World's Stock Exchanges' (2011) Vitting Andersen et al. propose a model of the World's Stock Exchanges that predicts how an individual stock exchange should be priced in terms of performance of the global exchange market. In the present work this model is adopted to describe the financial network. Understanding how disruption can propagate across financial markets is indeed of the utmost importance, hence our aim is to study the dynamics of the World's Stock Exchange network, inter alia we are interested in the study of the avalanches of price, disturbances propagating in the world financial network of stock exchanges. In fact the model has a direct correspondence to models of earth tectonic plate movements developed in physics. In tectonic plate movement stresses are slowly build up over centuries only to be released in a quick snap, lasting from seconds to at most some few minutes, that we feel as an earth quake. The main idea is to describe a similar slow build-up of 'stresses' in the world's financial network of stock exchanges where stresses can be thought of arising from for example business cycles in the real economy. Just like earthquakes such a slow build up of 'stress' is then followed by a quick release in terms of domino effects where the major part of the world's stock exchanges resonate with big up or down price movements. The main innovative part of the model that we will introduce is therefore a separation of time scales just as seen in earthquakes. We first replicate the results of the model using empirical data using as source Bloomberg. We then verify that the price dynamics can indeed be described in terms of avalanche dynamics, and we find that such dynamics show power law behavior in agreement with what is found in other Self Organized Critical (SOC) models. We extend such studies and give a quantitative as well as qualitative description of the details in the dynamics of the propagation of "price-quakes" (avalanches). The second case is the Interlocking Directorates in Italy, i.e. the situation that occurs when a person affiliated with one company sits on the board of directors of another organization, analyzed by using network theory. We first analyzed the Italian case in order to investigate the presence of a persistent core. Applying the same methodology used by Milakovic et al., from 1998 to 2010 we found quite different results: the persistent sub-graphs are not connected and so we could not find a core. Instead in the German stock exchange Milakovic et al. have found a small core of directors densely connected among themselves. In order to capture the persistent structure of the Interlocks Network we propose a different approach that allows us to assess the stability of links between companies in Italy. We describe the dynamic board networks by means of a static graph in which an edge is related with the persistence over time of an interlock between two companies. The results lead to affirm that in the Italian board network a set of stable links is observable, nevertheless a presence of a large turnover between the directors. There are strong ties among firms in the overall period. Most of them are ties due to the ownership of family firms: Berlusconi, Benetton, Agnelli, Caltagirone, De Benedetti.

Abstract:
Pisidia, a mountainous region in southwestern Asia Minor, is a real toponymic conservatory of Anatolian culture and languages. Our thesis deals with the toponymy and ethnonymy of Pisidia and the persistence of Anatolian languages in the toponymy of the region. Toponymy and ethnonymy reveal the territorial control of each settlement, whether it be Anatolian population or exogenous settlements (mainly Greek and Roman). Indeed, by choosing the language used to create the name of the place or the people, we learn more about the region. After having produced a catalog of toponyms and ethnonyms of the Pisidia classified by types and after having discussed their origin using linguistic arguments for each one, we study the Greek presence and the Roman colonies by considering the successive domination in regard to toponymy. Several themes were discussed : the question of the control of the region during the Hellenistic period, the Seleucid foundations, as well as the Roman colonies founded by Augustus. Then we focus on the identity of the Pisidians, studying the question of their origin and the topoi associated with them. The continuities and territorial cleavage of Pisidia are discussed before a toponymic panorama showing a linguistic classification and a semantic classification of toponyms based on the semantic repository (water, relief, vegetation, etc.). Most of the place names are descriptive and refer to elements of the landscape

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of the work outlined in this paper is to compare three different variable cycle jet engine concepts for future SSTs. These engines are: the Turbofan-Turbojet, the Mid-Tandem Fan engine and the Double Bypass Engine. The comparison is carried out on a basis of performance, handling and sizing issues. This preliminary analysis compares S.F.C., size, variable geometry and cycle changes, and the effect of variable stator on the running lines of each compressor for each engine. The fuel bill, for two standard missions, is estimated as well. These preliminary results indicate that the three engines are quite similar in terms of general suitability. The Mid Tandem Fan appears to be an attractive proposition from the point of view of sizing, however this comes with a small penalty in fuel consumption.
