Background: Multiple pregnancy remains one of the highest risk situations for the mother, foetus and neonate despite recent advances in obstetrics, perinatal and neonatal care. Twin pregnancies have increased rates of obstetric and perinatal complications compared to singletons Objective of present study was comparative assessment of fetomaternal outcome in twin pregnancy with singleton pregnancy in Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of S.M.S. Medical College, Jaipur.Methods: This was a hospital based, prospective observational study done in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. S.M.S. Medical College, Jaipur from April 2015 to March 2016. 150 women with twin pregnancy and 150 women with singleton pregnancies at gestation age of 28 weeks and above coming for delivery and consented for the study were included in the study. Women with chronic medical disorder or chronic hypertension were excluded from the study. Maternal and neonatal outcome recorded and analysed.Results: Occurrence of twin in our study was 2.82%. Risk of preterm labour was about nine times higher in twin pregnancies than the singleton (OR: 2.74, 95% CI; 1.4494-5.1884, P value 0.001). The risk of premature rupture of membrane was increased by 2.74 times in twin pregnancies (OR:2.74; 95% CI: 1.4494-5.1884, p value .001). There was 3-time increased risk of malpresentation (OR 3.14; CI:1.7184-5.7480, p value .00002) and 2.28 times increase in hypertensive disorder (OR 2.28; 95% CI: 1.0727-4.8823, p value .03) in twin pregnancies. The risk of asphyxia and septicaemia was 2.5 times more in twins.Conclusions: Twin pregnancy is a high-risk pregnancy with more complications in mother and foetus and is a great challenge for obstetrician. So, it should be managed carefully at tertiary care centre to reduce the maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity.

Abstract:
The aim of a quality assurance (QA) program is to assist a radio-diagnostic facility in consistently obtaining adequate radiological information with a minimum of dose and a minimum of cost. An integrated part of a quality assurance program is quality control (QC) in which a series of examinations and checks on equipment performance are undertaken, so that any changes can be objectively monitored and remedies made. The main objective of the present work was to carry out an independent audit of the important features of QA tests and radiation safety parameters in medical X-ray installations, which would reflect the safety status and to assess the regulatory requirements of the safety code. We conducted a radiological safety and quality assurance audit of 32 medical X-ray diagnostic machines installed in SMS hospital, Jaipur. A QA kit consisting of a kVp test meter, ionization chamber-based radiation survey meter and other standard accessories were used for the required measurements. The study mainly covered eight quality control checks that is accuracy check of accelerating potential (kVp), linearity of tube current (mA station)and timer, congruence of radiation and optical field, and total filtration, beam alignment, focal spot size, leakage radiation survey, and beam out. The status test is carried out in order to establish the functional status of the equipments. They operated and functioned correctly and prevented movement when activated. All measured values were well within the tolerance limit.

Abstract:
Detection of the presence and absence of bone invasion by the tumor in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients is very significant for their treatment planning and surgical resection. For bone invasion detection, CT scan imaging is the preferred choice of radiologists because of its high sensitivity and specificity. In the present work, deep learning algorithm based model, BID-Net, has been proposed for the automation of bone invasion detection. BID-Net performs the binary classification of CT scan images as the images with bone invasion and images without bone invasion. The proposed BID-Net model has achieved an outstanding accuracy of 93.62%. The model is also compared with six Transfer Learning models like VGG16, VGG19, ResNet-50, MobileNetV2, DenseNet-121, ResNet-101 and BID-Net outperformed over the other models. As there exists no previous studies on bone invasion detection using Deep Learning models, so the results of the proposed model have been validated from the experts of practitioner radiologists, S.M.S. hospital, Jaipur, India.

Background: Cystic artery variations are frequent and important for invasive as well as invasive procedure around the hepatibiliary area. Variation can be in term of origin, course and termination of CA. Aim: Aim was to identify new type of Cystic arterial variation in term of origin, no. of CA, and termination and surgical implications of these variations. Materials and methods: Study was carried out at department of anatomy, S.M.S Medical college and hospitals Jaipur (Raj). Total 60 cadaver were included in the study. Ethical clearance was taken for the same. Subjects with history of abdominal surgery around Hepatobiliary area were excluded. Result: Source of origin of SCA was RHA (majority of cases), Aberrant RHA, SMA, HAP. DCA was observed in 13.34% cases. Accessory CA arose from RHA, ARHA, HAP, PSPD. Compound DCA was observed in 5% cases. Longer CA was observed in the study. Conclusion: Variation related to CA are essential to keep in mind while dealing with Hepatobiliary area during invasive and non invasive procedures as well. Abstract:
Objective: The purpose of the present study is to search and detailed the existence and occurrence of anatomical variations of the renal artery by using CT angiography. Materials and Methods: 100 patients visited the Radiology department of S.M.S. Medical College, Jaipur. To cover the whole abdominal aorta in each patient, spiral CT angiography scan was made and thin slices (0.6 mm) axial images was obtained. Both sagittal and coronal images were reconstructed. Results: We found that only 23% patients had classical (Normal) anatomical presentation of Renal artery, whereas in 77% patients, variations existed in the same, using CT angiography method. Conclusion: The different varieties of renal vessels have been experienced with expanding recurrence over past decade. This is because of wide spread utilization of renal angiography and other imaging modalities, as of late. We as anatomist accept that anatomical information on atypical renal courses is significant for all careful and radiological intercessions including the kidneys or it might prompt mistaken translation. Background: The recently identified hormone kisspeptin has been suggested to play an important regulatory role in placentation. The aim and objective of the study is the measurement of serum kisspeptin level in asymptomatic pregnant women and to find out the association of serum kisspeptin with gestational age in women with early pregnancy.Methods: This was a longitudinal study to the evaluation of 178 asymptomatic pregnant women with a gestation of 6 to 16 weeks attending routine antenatal booking visit recruited as study participants from the Antenatal Clinical of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, S.M.S. Medical College and Attached Hospitals, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India.Results: After initial clinical examination of every participant, a single blood sample was taken for the measurement of serum kisspeptin. Serum kisspeptin measurement test was performed by ELISA method and results were expressed as ng/ml. Pregnancy outcome was recorded prospectively. Mean serum kisspeptin level of study participants was 2.80±1.87ng/ml and median were 2.41 (Range 0.244-14.06ng/ml). Our result showed the relationship of serum kisspeptin with gestational age (GA) (p<0.000).Conclusions: serum kisspeptin level increases in pregnancy and showed positive relationship with gestational age significantly (p<0.000).

Measles is one of the disease which is amenable to eradication, but in India measles isstill a major cause of morbidity and significant contributor to childhood mortality. Inthe present study. Infectious disease hospital records for a period of five & half yearswere analysed. It was found that 253 measles cases were diagnosed & underwenttreatment. Out of 253, 179 ( 70.7%) were males and 74 ( 29.2%) were females. Fourtyeight (18.9%) were between 7-12 months of age. Maximum cases i.e. 166 ( 65.6%)were registered during months of March, April, May, & June. A significant proportionof cases i.e. 54 (21%) developed measles, inspite of immunization.measles still remain endemic with most casesoccuring in young children & infants.3In India,measles vaccine was first made available in 1978and has been reccommended for children aged 9-15 months. Background: Ovarian tumors usually presents as adnexal masses which may be benign or malignant. Accurate and timely diagnosis of an adnexal mass is a challenge for the gynecologists. Currently clinical examination, ultrasonographic assessment and ovarian tumour markers (CA 125, beta hCG, AFP, LDH) are routinely done at our centre to evaluate patients with ovarian tumours. The study was designed to evaluate the ability of RMI 4 to discriminate benign ovarian tumor from malignant ovarian tumor in patients attending Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, S.M.S. Medical College, Jaipur.Methods: 200 patients diagnosed to have ovarian tumours were included in the study after obtaining written consent. Ultrasonographic characteristic, menopausal status and serum CA 125 levels were documented preoperatively. Risk of malignancy index 4 was calculated and correlated with histopathological diagnosis.Results: At a cut-off point of 450, RMI 4 had a sensitivity of 67.5% (95% CI: 50.87-81.43%), specificity of 98.75% (95.56-99.85%), positive likelyhood ratio of 54, negative likelyhood ratio of 0.33, a positive predictive value of 93.1%, negative predictive value of 92.4% and diagnostic accuracy of 92.5%.Conclusions: RMI 4 is a simple, cost effective, reliable scoring system that is easily applicable method in primary evaluation of patients with ovarian tumours with a sensitivity of 67.5% and specificity of 98.75%.

Background: In India, there is a rapid increase in people above 60 years. In Rajasthan, there is increase in population of persons above 60 years from 5.1% of total population in 1961 to 7.2% in 2011. With increase in their number, the illnesses affecting elderly people will also increase. With this background, this study was done to assess the morbidity patterns in elderly population attending Department of Medicine, S.M.S. Medical College, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India.Methods: This was a cross sectional, prospective and observational study done in medicine department. 250 patients of 60 years and above, attending medical OPD or admitted were included. All data collected were entered in Microsoft Excel sheets and analysed statistically.Results: Respiratory diseases (45.6%) were commonest morbidity followed by cataract (36.8%), cardiovascular (34.4%) and hearing impairment (33.2%). Osteoarthritis was seen in 31.2% and anaemia was present in 20.8%. As the age increases chances of getting morbidities were more. The average number of illnesses per morbid person was 1.92.Conclusions: A high prevalence of morbidity among elderly highlights the urgent need to provide geriatric health care services in the developing country like India. Elderly persons should be motivated to undergo regular health check-ups to identify these common problems at earliest.

Abstract:
Four early photographers are examined here in relation to their encounters with Tongans and Tonga. These photographers are Andrew Garrett, Gustav Adolph Riemer, Clarence Gordon Campbell and Walter Stanhope Sherwill. Garrett, an American natural historian who specialized in shells and fish, took two ambrotypes of Tongans in Fiji in 1868, which are two of the earliest Tongan photographs known. Riemer, born in Saarlouis, Germany, was a marine photographer on S.M.S. Hertha on an official diplomatic visit and took at least 28 photographs in Tonga in 1876. Campbell, a tourist from New York, took 25 culturally important photographs in 1902. Sherwill, a British subject born in India, moved to Tonga about the time of the First World War. He probably took many photographs with more modern equipment, but only two have been identified with certainty. This article presents information about the photographers and those depicted, where the original photographs can be found and the research that made it possible to glean cultural information from them. These early photographers are placed in the context of other more well-known early photographers whose works can be found in archives and libraries in New Zealand, Australia, Hawai‘i and Germany. In addition, summary information about two Tongan-born photographers is presented, as well as where their photographs/negatives can be found.

Background: Inguinal hernia is a one of common diagnosis which is frequently encountered in routine clinical practice. The Lichtenstein technique (tension free mesh repair) is currently the gold standard in open inguinal hernia repair. Currently chronic groin pain (Inguinodynia) is one of the common complications after hernia repair and it may affect quality of life and it has been reported in 16% to 62% of the patients.Methods: This prospective, randomized study was conducted in the department of general surgery in S.M.S. Medical College and attached group of hospitals, Jaipur from May 2014 to December 2015. All patients of 18-80 years old, who were admitted for elective inguinal hernia repair, were included for the study. Patients with bilateral, recurrent, irreducible or incarcerated hernia, pregnant patients and patients with co morbid conditions, were excluded from the study.Results: Mean age was 46.5 years in absorbable group and 45.4 years in non absorbable group. Male to female ratio was 142:13 in absorbable group and 143:12 in non absorbable group. Post operative pain was measured by VAS score. Mean postoperative pain (VAS score) was lower in absorbable sutures group as compared to non absorbable group at 3 months (0.92±0.879 vs. 1.23±1.2; p=0.013) and at 6 months (0.48±0.57 vs. 0.77±0.65; p≤0.001), which was significant.Conclusions: Patients with absorbable suture for mesh fixation has less groin pain as compared to non-absorbable suture in hernia repair during 6 months follow up period.

Objectives To observe the socio demographic profile and injury pattern in cervical spinal cordinjury. Methods One hundred and forty-one clients of traumatic cervical spine injury (CSI) were admitted from 1st December 2010 to 15th October 2011 at the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, S.M.S. Medical College and Hospital, Jaipur. Detailed clinical, neurological evaluation as per American Spinal Injury Association Classification (ASIA) and radiological assessment were done along with identification of mechanism of injury, mode of evacuation and presence of associated injuries. Data analysis was done in October 2011 and results were compiled and analysed. Results Mean age in our sample was 35.87 ± 14.38 years that comprised 11 females (7.8%) and 130 males (92.2%) of whom 78 (55.3%) fell in the age group of 25 to 55 years. Majority 64 (45.4%) were illiterate, 80 (56.8%) being farmers and labourers. Greater fraction had road traffic accidents i.e., 66 (46.81%) and fall from height 56 (39.72%) as the mechanism of trauma. Only 69 (49.8%) could arrange an ambulance for transport. Majority of the injured i.e., 84 (59.57%) presented with neurologically complete picture as per ASIA classification and the most common involvement being of 5th and 6th cervical segments i.e., 103 (73.15%). Conclusion This study evaluated the demographic variables of cervical spine injury for better understanding of impact that it has and further for better allocation of our health resources, distribution and planning

Background: Beta-thalassemia major is one of major public health problems in India. Thalassemia major is a transfusion-dependent severe anemia and these children experience various problems if the transfusion is inadequate but at the same time repeated blood transfusions are associated with hazards like iron overload.Methods: This study was conducted at thalassemia ward of S.M.S Hospital and J.K.LON paediatrics Hospital, Jaipur from April 2012 to Nov. 2013. 145 thalassemia patients on transfusion therapy attending outdoor or being admitted were assessed after obtaining due permission from the authorities and consent from the guardian or parents of patients.Results: Present study comprised 145 beta-thalassemia major patients with 51 (35%) females and 94 (65%) males in which youngest patient is 3 years old and the oldest 33 years. 104 (72%) were Hindus and 41 (28%) were Muslims. Consanguinity was found in a significant proportion 16% (23) of the parents of the patients. 137 (94%) patients had serum ferritin ³1000ng/ml. Out 145 thalassemic patients, 108 (74.5%) have total serum bilirubin >1(mg/dl), 103 (71%) have SGPT level >35IU, 103 (71%) have SGOT level >40IU), 38 (26.2%) have serum alkaline phosphatase level >390 IU, 35 (24.1%) have serum creatinine level >1.6mg/dl, 42 (29%) have serum urea level >45mg/dl, 28 (19.3%) have serum uric acid level >6mg/dl.Conclusions: It is suggested to revise and devise suitable transfusion regime so that a balance between adequate transfusion and minimum side effects of multiple transfusions is maintained. Systemic effects of multiple transfusions should be rigorously and meticulously studied.

Introduction: Female breast cancer is now more prevalent than lung cancer worldwide, with an estimated 2.3 million new cases worldwide, or 11.7% of all cancer cases. Breast cancer is an epithelial malignancy, but tumor microenvironment i.e. stroma plays remarkable role in invasion and metastasis. The cross talk between tumor cells and stromal cells is critical step in tumor progression as a result there is increased interest in developing novel therapies targeting the microenvironment. Aim and Objectives: To study the frequency and intensity of stromal CD10 expression in invasive breast cancer and to correlate it with various clinicopathological parameters.Materials and Methods: The study was conducted in Department of Pathology at S.M.S. Medical College, Jaipur. CD 10 expression in 70 patients diagnosed with carcinoma breast during the period of 2021-2022, assessed by immunohistochemistry and scored as negative (<10% stromal positivity), weak (10-30% stromal positivity) and strong (>30% stromal positivity) and statistically analyzed with other parameters. Results and Discussion: Out of the 70 cases, 51 (72.86%) showed CD10 positivity in the stroma, with 28 (40%) showing strongly positive and 23 (32.86%) with weakly positive results. With respect to histopathological grade (P value = 0.0234), molecular subtype (P value = 0.0006), and PR negativity (P value = 0.0480), CD10 expression in the stroma showed a positive correlation. Conclusion: The correlation between stromal expression of CD10 and histopathological grade, molecular subtype, and PR negativity was statistically significant. To confirm CD10 expression in invasive breast cancer as a predictor of overall survival rates and disease-free survival, more research is required..

The aim of this study to assess the applicability of Greulich and Pyle (GP) method for determination of age in 14-18 years of age group healthy population of Jaipur region. And objective is to assess the skeletal age determined by GP method using hand radiography of study population.Method: This study was carried out on total 80 subjects at the Department of Forensic Medicine in association with the Department of Radiology after obtaining due permission and approval from the RRB and IEC of SMS Medical College, Jaipur during the period from 1st July, 2020 to 31st August, 2021 of subjects between 14-18 years of age. All subjects recruited from each age sub-group category viz 14-15 years (Group A), 15-16 years (Group B), 16-17 years (Group C) and 17-18 years (Group D) including equal number of members from both sexes (10 males and 10 females of each age sub group category). After obtaining valid informed consent for age estimation all details,general physical & dental examination was done and recorded in proposed Pro forma. The skeletal age (bone age) was determined using Greulich and Pyle Atlas (2nd edition, 1959)15. X-ray image on computer was comparedwith images on GP Atlas according to sex and most matching image to assess the skeletal age. Images wereseparated in two groups according to their sex and examined by both observers at different occasions to determine skeletal age of subjects and result derived.Result: Among all (n=80), of 81.2% Hindus (34 males and 31 females), 12.5% Muslims (4 males and 6 females) and 6.25% Jains (2 males and 3 females). Correlation of estimated skeletal age by GP method to the chronological age in both females and males showed a strong positive correlation. {r value=0.987 (females) & 0.974 (males)} and for both p<0.001 which indicates that the correlation of estimated skeletal age and chronological age was statistically significant.Conclusion: Study reveals skeletal age lagged behind chronological age in all age subgroups in both boys and girls but the difference of CA and SA is less in girls as compared to boys. The G-P atlas method, although very old but used with caution can yield good results for assessment of bone age in Indian boys and girls, better for girls. Delay in skeletal maturation was observed in both males and females, but the females in the sample matured earlier then the males. Thus, G-P atlas method seems applicable on Indian children. However, studies on larger sample sizes considering other factors may yield better insight into its forensic application.

6635 Background: The Oncology Care Model (OCM) is intended to incentivize physicians to improve the quality and reduce the cost of cancer care. In OCM, providers are accountable for all costs during six month episodes of care relative to target costs (TC) derived from a baseline spending period (BSP; 2013-2015). This accountability is intended to foster care coordination to reduce preventable emergency department visits and hospitalizations (EDH). Benefits of reducing EDH may be diluted when new treatment indications for costly immunotherapies (IO) are introduced into clinical practice after BSP. Methods: We identified all non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and bladder cancer (BC) OCM episodes attributed to Tennessee Oncology (TO), a large community oncology network of over 90 oncologists, during performance period 2 (PP2; the most recent PP with available data). We selected NSCLC and BC because both diseases have IO indications that became standard of care after BSP. Using claims data analytics software, we identified all NSCLC and BC episodes with spending above TC, and found a subset of these above target episodes (ATEs) without any EDH that remained above TC due to IO use. Two medical oncologists reviewed these cases in duplicate to assess guideline concordance of IO. Results: During PP2 there were 2,623 OCM episodes attributed to TO, including 240 NSCLC and 31 BC episodes. Spending was above TC in 118 (49%) and 13 (42%) of NSCLC and BC episodes, respectively. For these NSCLC and BC ATEs, EDH was prevented in 62 (53%) and 5 (38%) of cases, respectively. In NSCLC and BC ATEs without EDH, 43 (69%) and 5 (100%) of episodes included IO, respectively. Clinician review in duplicate (S.M.S.; C.A.W.) found that the use of IO was NCCN guideline concordant in 33 (77%) and 4 (80%) of these NSCLC and BC cases, respectively (K = 0.87). Conclusions: Guideline-concordant use of expensive IO as its treatment indications expand poses substantial challenges to meeting cost targets in OCM, even when practices prevent EDH. Introduction: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of heart failure (HF). Only viable dysfunctional myocardium (hibernation) is potentially recoverable with restoration of adequate perfusion. Cardiac imaging modalities have emerged with the ability to differentiate between myocardial scar and viable myocardium and are now often used to direct therapy decisions including revascularization. Decrease in wall motion score (WMS) and improvement in LV ejection fraction (LVEF) during DSE is considered as a surrogate marker for viability of myocardium. It is largely unknown how cardiac specific biomarkers are released in relation the presence and extent of hibernation in patients with ischemic HF. The objectives of this study are to assess the relationship and interaction of the biomarkers BNP and hs TnI with hibernation in patients with chronic ischemic HF. Materials and methods: It is a single center observational study which is conducted in Department of Cardiology, S.M.S. Medical College, Jaipur. 70 eligible patients with suspected ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICMP) are prospectively recruited into an imaging study using DSE to determine viability of myocardium. The patients also had blood sampling at baseline to determine biomarkers. Results: Mean age (in yrs) of patients is 63.78 ± 10.69 years. No patient is in NYHA I. 25.7 % of patients are in NYHA II (18 patients); 36 patients (51.4%) are in NYHA III and 16 patients (22.8%) are in NYHA IV. On comparison of baseline characteristics among patients with different NYHA class, there is a progressive increase in level of cardiac biomarkers with increase in NYHA class. Both BNP and hs TnI levels are significantly elevated in patients with Improvement in EF >10% as compared with Improvement in EF <10% There is a continuous relationship between increasing degrees of hibernation and increasing BNP and hs Trop I levels. HsTrop I had predicted a positive 56.6% change in Improvement in LVEF. HsTrop I had predicted a positive 52.5% change in decrease in WMS. Conclusion: The current study support the novel concept that the extent of LV hibernation are determinant of serum BNP and hs Trop I elevation in patients with ischemic HF and hs Trop I levels in patients with ischemic HF relate to the degree of hibernation.

Similar triangles in questions are usually given as separate, adjacent or overlapped. Furthermore, similarity types such as Side-Angle-Side (S.A.S.), Side-Side-Side (S.S.S.) and Angle-Angle (A.A.) are requested in the questions. Students have more trouble in other types of questions. The purpose of this study is to investigate the difficulties of students about similar triangles and the reasons for these difficulties. This research was carried out with the case study method, which is one of the qualitative research approaches. The study was conducted with 55 Science High School 9th grade students and 9 open-ended questions were used to examine students' knowledge about “similarity in triangles”. Furthermore, 5 students were interviewed to find out the reasons for their solutions. Descriptive analysis method was used to analyze the data. As a result, it can be concluded that students have difficulties mostly in overlapped triangles and Angle-Angle type questions. On the other hand, it can be concluded that students are quite successful where similar triangles are given separately. In the light of the findings obtained in this study, it can be advised for lecturers to focus on the questions where similar triangles are overlapped while explaining the similarity in the triangle. <p><strong>INTRODUCTION: </strong>The current research was conducted to examine the effect of “Loneliness”, on time spent in Social Networking Sites (S.N.S), main reasons for S.N.S use, and its related behaviors.</p><p><strong>MATERIALS &amp; METHODS: </strong>156 students of Shiraz University voluntarily participated in this research. Loneliness was assessed usingthe UCLA Loneliness scale. 25% of highest scoring students reported that they were lonely whereas 25% of the lowest scoring students were considered to be non-lonely. The positive and negative reasons of using S.N.S were assessed based on Reasons for Internet Use Scale, and internet behaviors were assessed based on Scale of Internet Behaviors.</p><p><strong>RESULTS: </strong>There was no difference in time spent in S.N.S as well as the positive and negative reasons of using S.N.S (contrary to literature), but internet behaviors showed a significant difference between “lonely” and “non-lonely” individuals. “Lonely” and “non-lonely” individuals showed a significant difference in “social aspect” of S.N.S behaviors. There was also a significant difference between “Lonely” and “non-Lonely” individuals in “Negative impact” of S.N.S behaviors. Yet, there seemed to be no difference in “competency and convenience aspect” of S.N.S behaviors.</p><p><strong>CONCLUSIONS: </strong>This study suggested that there is no difference between lonely and non-lonely individuals in reasons for using S.N.S and time spent in S.N.S. This finding stands contrary to previous research findings and general literature on the subject In other words, what drives people to S.N.S at the first place shows no significant difference between lonely and non-lonely individuals while after attending S.N.S, social behavior of lonely individuals shows a significant difference which is consistently enhanced online. Lonely people also significantly develop internet-related problems in their daily functioning, including interference with real life socializing.</p>

The Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights has upheld the French law which prohibits the concealment of one’s face in public places. The law is directed principally at prohibiting Muslim women covering their faces in public spaces in France. The decision of the Strasbourg Court is premised on the French notion of ‘le vivre ensemble’; ‘living together.’ This critical analysis of the judgment contends that the decision is flawed and retrogressive for women’s rights in particular and undermines the socio-cultural rights and freedoms of individuals who belong to minority groups in general. On wider implications of the decision, it is worrisome that the decision appears to pander to dangerous political leanings currently growing in many parts of Europe and beyond. The Court risks promoting forced assimilation policies against minorities in various parts of the world. To illustrate its implications, the article highlights the experience of the Uyghurs, a Turkic ethnic group in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China.
