Abstract:
ENGELSK ABSTRACT: Maruska la Cour Mosegaard: ’’He was a tuff old man”. The relation between father and son seen over three generations This article explores fatherly authority as a historical and sociocultural phenomenon. Taking interviews with fathers in three generations as my point of departure, I analyze how men use their own fathers as both ideals and counter-images when practizing fatherhood. Authority is both reproduced and transformed from father to son, and three different forms of authority is identified: “traditional“, “charismatic“, and “negotiated“ authority. How authority is practized and legitimized is a question of generation, but also depends on the sociocultural position of the individual man. In the article I question the picture of contemporary fathers as “secondary mothers“ and lost sons entering a “land of fatherhood never explored before“. Rather I claim that authority is still present in the relation between father and child, but on new premises and with different modes of expression. Also I call attention to how comtemporary fathers, like the generations of fathers before them, identify themselves with their fathers as both positive and negative rolemodels. Key words: Fatherhood, authority, generational differences, life forms.

Abstract:
The aim of this article is to illustrate how the remains of the church excavated in Søndregate 7–11 in Trondheim in 2016–2017 became a national monument: the «Church of St. Clement»; the site where St. Olav allegedly was canonized. By analyzing how different participations, both humans and non-humans, and mechanisms constituted the process of formation, this national monument is appreciated as a heterogenous contextual phenomenon, and not a homogenous object resting within itself. It is demonstrated how non-archaeological participations such as media, the Catholic church, the Norwegian church, the Norwegian parliament, the developer, and the government formed elements in the network behind the national monument. In this way, archaeological elements of the project became marginalized. In my opinion this – the exhibition process of the church established on the site included – was decisive for why, from an academic point of view, premature conclusions were drawn. The conclusion of this article is that there is not a 1:1 relationship between the archaeological material excavated and the national monument the «Church of St. Clement». This phenomenon was enacted, i.e., national-monumentalized, not discovered.

Abstract:
Abstract The development of a new cityscape in the old industrial harbour known as ‘Sønder Havn’ in Køge in eastern Zealand led in the summer of 2018 to the finding of a clinker-built shipwreck. The ship had been built in the 1520s, exclusively from oak, and had undergone a reinforcement in the stem some ten years after the initial building phase, hereby adding an extra outer layer of clinker planks and five riders on top of the floor timbers. The extensive dendrochronological analysis showed that the planks had been felled in the eastern Baltic area, while the floor timbers and the keel of the vessel were from somewhere in the vicinity of the Rhine’s mouth. Of the ship, only the parts below the waterline were preserved, partly due to the groundwater level but probably equally due to salvaging shortly after wrecking.

Abstract:
In this paper the elevation model for the Greenland ice sheet based upon radio-echo-sounding flights of the Technical University of Denmark (TUD) (Letréguilly and others, 1991) are compared with the satellite-altimetry model (Tscherning and others, 1993) improved with airborne-laser and radar altimetry (IA model). Although the general hypsometry of both data sets is rather similar, differences seem to be large at individual points along the ice margin. Over the entire ice sheet, the difference between the IA model and the TUD model is 33 m with a root-mean-square error of 112 m. Differential GPS measurements collected in the ice-marginal zone near Søndre Strømfjord show that the IA model is more accurate than the TUD model. The latter data set underestimates the elevation by approximately 150 m in the ice-marginal zone near Søndre Strømfjord.Calculation of the ablation with an energy-balance model and with a degree-day model points to a 20% decrease in the ablation if the IA model is used. Not only does this show the sensitivity of ablation calculations to the orographic input but it also indicates that the ablation calculated by the models used nowadays is relatively overestimated.

Abstract:
Starup – a Jutish place name with historical and archaeological potentialJutland’s six localities with the name of Starup or Stårup have not, with the exception of Sønder Starup on the edge of Haderslev Fjord, attracted any great archaeological interest. Most recently, the Starup area of the town of Løgumkloster has been dismissed as uninteresting in settlement-historical terms. This article attempts to rehabilitate this name group and presents the case for greater archaeological focus on these localities. It is argued that Starup was originally the term used for transit points between land and water traffic in the Viking Age and Early Middle Ages.In addition to the Starup localities, the article discusses a name complex with a possible, so far unknown, snekke name at Øster Starup. An alternative explanation is also given for Løgumkloster’s Latin name of Locus Dei. In conclusion, Starup is compared with other place names indicating trade and transit. It is argued that the Starup localities could have formed part of a more general transport infrastructure, just as the activities at this type of settlement can be perceived as a precursor to the urban developments of the Middle Ages.Michael Lerche NielsenAfdeling for NavneforskningNordisk ForskningsinstitutKøbenhavns Universitet

Abstract.

The Sulugssut intrusive complex, discovered in 1986, lies between the glaciers of K. J. V. Steenstrup Søndre Bræ and K. J. V. Steenstrup Nordre Bræ at 66° 30´N. It has an approximate diameter of 5 km and consists of dense dyke swarms and a plutonic core in which tinguaites and ijolites appear to predominate. It is of particular interest on three main counts: (1) it represents the most southerly in the line of Tertiary igneous centres which stretches over 1000 km to the north, (2) its petrographic character, although resembling the Gardiner intrusion to the north, is unique in East Greenland, and (3) it is located dose to the coast confounding earlier ideas that highly undersaturated magmas occur only inland.

Abstract On 19 and 20 August 1984, an ice-marginal lake drained through a subglacial tunnel beneath the ede of the Greenland ice sheet, discharging about 22.3 × 106 m3 of water in less than 19 h. The event, which may occur annually, modified ice-margin dynamics at the lake site and along a 3 km stretch of ice margin 11 km down-stream.

Abstract:
Abstract The hydrographs of two jökulhlaups resulting from the sudden drainage of an ice-dammed lake in West Greenland in 1984 and 1987 are compared. The first flood had a similar peak discharge to the second but drained only two-thirds of the total volume of the 1987 event which amounted to 32–36 × 106 m3 in 36 h. Calculations based on the lake refill time suggest that it drains every 2–3 years, but that peak flows may be variable from flood to flood. The timing of the jökulhlaups in relation to the melt season may reflect variations of water pressure within the subglacial drainage networks, and changes in the configuration of these networks and the positions of crevasses on an annual basis.

AbstractGlacio-meteorological data obtained during the Greenland Ice Margin Experiment (GIMEX) investigations in West Greenland (the Søndre Strømfjord transect) have been used to test and calibrate energy-balance/mass-balance models for the ice/snow surface. The region is characterised by the development of a wide zone of low surface albedo in the course of the melting season. This zone was simulated in one of the energy-balance models by including the effect of surficial meltwater on albedo. Observed mass-balance and albedo data were used to constrain the models. Although all the models are capable of predicting the transect balance reasonably well, only the model with the meltwater albedo coupling, is able to reproduce the observed albedo pattern and mass-balance profile along the transect. By including the feedback between surficial meltwater and albedo in the model, the sensitivity of the specific balance to changes in air temperature is found to be greatest just below the equilibrium line (in contrast to what is generally found for valley glaciers). A 1 K warming of the air temperature would increase the mean ablation along the transect by 0.5 m w.e.year−1.

Abstract:
AbstractA lacustrine sediment record from the Kangerlussuaq region, West Greenland, has resulted in a pollen, macrofossil, and sediment stratigraphy that encompasses the last 5000 14C yr. Deglaciation of the area and subsequent development of a nearby floodplain occurred before 5000 yr B.P. Since that time eolian sand and silt deposition appear to have been continuous, with a significant increase ca. 1000 14C yr B.P. Pollen analysis shows little change in the character of the vegetation throughout the record. Fluctuations in herb pollen taxa indicate changes in the extent and development of eolian sand sheets. The oldest pollen zone records relatively little pollen accumulation and low taxa diversity. This is followed by a zone of high pollen accumulation, presumably a phase of highest vegetation density, from 4400 to 3400 14C yr B.P. Thereafter, declining pollen accumulation rates reveal a gradual environmental deterioration. Macrofossil analyses record significant limnological changes, with an early eutrophic phase followed by a masotrophic phase and a reversal to more eutrophic conditions in the final phase. The preserved record illustrates the interactions of deglaciation, eolian activity, regional vegetation, and limnological change.

Abstract:
During the early part of the Allerød period, from c. 13 600 to 13 330 years BP, unstable soils with a tundra-like open, treeless vegetation with Betula nana and Dryas octopetala were found around Søndre Kobberdam in Hareskovene. Open Betula pubescens woodland was not established until the middle Allerød about 13 330 years BP. During the Younger Dryas, Betula nana and Dryas octopetala spread again, and Betula pubescens almost disappeared. From the onset of the Holocene warming an open tundra landscape characterised the area. About 11 300 years BP Betula pubescens started to recolonise the region and Populus tremula and Pinus sylvetris arrived at c. 11 000 years BP, replacing the open landscape by woodland. Along the margin of the lake Carex paniculata, Carex riparia and Cladium mariscus were growing. The lake fauna included a rich and diverse fauna of molluscs that thrived in the carbonate-rich waters. We did not find any evidence for the local presence of Pinus sylvestris during the late glacial.

Abstract:
Abstract A regional atmospheric model, the HIRHAM4 regional climate model (RCM) using boundary conditions from the ECHAM5 atmosphere–ocean general circulation model (AOGCM), was downscaled to a 500-m gridcell increment using SnowModel to simulate 131 yr (1950–2080) of hydrologic cycle evolution in west Greenland’s Kangerlussuaq drainage. Projected changes in the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) surface mass balance (SMB) and runoff are relevant for potential hydropower production and prediction of ecosystem changes in sensitive Kangerlussuaq Fjord systems. Mean annual surface air temperatures and precipitation in the Kangerlussuaq area were simulated to increase by 3.4°C and 95 mm water equivalent (w.eq.), respectively, between 1950 and 2080. The local Kangerlussuaq warming was less than the average warming of 4.8°C simulated for the entire GrIS. The Kangerlussuaq SMB loss increased by an average of 0.3 km3 because of a 0.4 km3 rise in precipitation, 0.1 km3 rise in evaporation and sublimation, and 0.6 km3 gain in runoff (1950–2080). By 2080, the spring runoff season begins approximately three weeks earlier. The average modeled SMB and runoff is approximately −0.1 and 1.2 km3 yr−1, respectively, indicating that ∼10% of the Kangerlussuaq runoff is explained by the GrIS SMB net loss. The cumulative net volume loss (1950–2080) from SMB was 15.9 km3, and runoff was 151.2 km3 w.eq. This runoff volume is expected to have important hydrodynamic and ecological impacts on the stratified salinity in the Kangerlussuaq Fjord and on the transport of freshwater to the ocean.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper tests and falsifies the theory that the development of thick sequences of vertically stacked clean and debris-laden ice layers at the margin of the Greenland ice sheet can be attributed solely to simple freezing-on of material at the bed. Isotopic analysis in δD and δ18O of ice from the ice-sheet margin near Søndre Stramfjord indicates that the debris-rich and debris-poor elements of the basal sequence have different origins. While the debris bands display isotopic fractionation consistent with a freezing origin, the intercalated clean ice layers do not. The clean ice layers have isotopic values indistinguishable from debris-bearing ice immediately above the debris-band sequence and from unaltered glacier ice, and are entrained by a different process from the debris bands. Debris may be entrained by freezing at the bed, but the development of a vertically stacked sequence of debris bands must be attributed to some other mechanism.

Abstract:
Abstract. This observation and modeling study provides insights into runoff exiting the Watson River drainage basin, Kangerlussuaq, West Greenland during a 30 year period (1978/79–2007/08) when the climate experienced increasing temperatures and precipitation. The 30-year simulations quantify the terrestrial freshwater output from part of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) and the land between the GrIS and the ocean, in the context of global warming and increasing GrIS surface melt. We used a snow-evolution modeling system (SnowModel) to simulate the winter accumulation and summer ablation processes, including runoff and surface mass balance (SMB), of the ice sheet. To a large extent, the SMB fluctuations could be explained by changes in net precipitation (precipitation minus evaporation and sublimation), with 8 out of 30 years having negative SMB, mainly because of relatively low annual net precipitation. The overall trend in net precipitation and runoff increased significantly, while SMB increased insignificantly throughout the simulation period, leading to enhanced precipitation of 0.59 km3 w.eq. (or 60%), runoff of 0.43 km3 w.eq. (or 54%), and SMB of 0.16 km3 w.eq. (or 86%). Runoff rose on average from 0.80 km3 w.eq. in 1978/79 to 1.23 km3 w.eq. in 2007/08. The percentage of catchment outlet runoff explained by runoff from the GrIS decreased on average ∼10%.
