Abstract:
Red Towers is named after Bratislava Castle in Bratislava, Slovakia. I spent the summers of 2017 and 2019 traveling to different cities in Slovakia, and since my own heritage is Slovak, I began thinking about the idea of "home." What makes a home a home? Where was home for me? Red Towers is divided into two sections. In the first section I tried to capture the feeling of excitement that comes with leaving home, exploring the unknown, and experiencing new things. The second section is much more gentle and contemplative, and expresses the longing to return home. I decided on the title Red Towers not only because of the connection to Slovakia, but also because of the power that the words convey and their metaphorical meaning. I have dedicated this piece to my mom, who created the best home a son could ask for, and continues to demonstrate an uncommon kindness and hospitality. The melody in the clarinet at the end is my melody for her.

Abstract:
We have compared color discrimination thresholds for long-wavelength spectral lights presented to the fovea and to the peripheral retina. Results obtained in the fovea are similar to those obtained by other investigators. Threshold increases as the test wavelength is increased. The slope of the threshold-versus-wavelength function decreases as the stimulus field is moved further into the periphery. Peripheral thresholds are significantly higher on a blue background bright enough to desensitize rods, but they are not bright enough to raise foveal thresholds, suggesting that rod signals contribute to the peripheral thresholds. However, the shapes of the threshold-versus-wavelength functions obtained on the background differ in the fovea and the periphery, suggesting that differences between foveal and peripheral functions are not produced entirely by rods. Foveal and peripheral functions are similar in shape if the peripheral thresholds are obtained with a larger test field.

Abstract:
Red-green color discrimination thresholds were measured at 25° in the nasal retina during the cone plateau following a bleach and after 30 min of dark adaptation. Thresholds were obtained for four test colors ranging in appearance from green to red with five circular stimulus fields ranging in size from 1° to 16° in diameter. Thresholds for all test colors decreased with increases in field size both during the cone plateau and after dark adaptation. Thresholds obtained after dark adaptation were always higher than those obtained on the cone plateau. The increase in threshold was typically greatest for green and yellow test colors and least for orange and red. Results on the cone plateau were described well by the Boynton and Kambe equation for red-green thresholds. Dark-adapted thresholds could also be described by adding a term representing rod excitation to this equation.

Abstract:
It has been found that the values of ratio of hourly diffuse illuminance to daily diffuse illuminance, rvd, are very close to the corresponding values for diffuse solar radiation, rd, examined from the measured data of two locations. This has been further confirmed by examining the values for rvd and rd as calculated from TMY2 [1] data base for primary locations. Based on this, it has been proposed that the correlations available in literature to predict rd can be employed to predict rvd Adequacy of the correlation due to Satyamurty and Lahiri [2] available for rd has been examined to predict rvd as obtained from TMY2 data base for the 56 primary locations. It has been found that the values of rvd obtained from measured illuminance data of two locations have been predicted within a rms difference of 7.1% and within a rms difference of 4.3% for the 56 primary locations of TMY2 data when the correlation due to Satyamurty and Lahiri for rd has been employed after suitable modification.

Full text
Abstract:
In the present article, interrelations between hourly and daily global and diffuse solar illuminance have been developed. By examining a large database, 56 primary locations, of TMY2 [1], it has been found that the values of ratio of hourly global or diffuse illuminance to corresponding daily values, (rvt = Iv/Hv ; rvd = 1vd/Hvd), are very close to the corresponding values for global and diffuse solar radiation, rt = I/H; rd = Id/Hd). Thus, it has been proposed that the existing correlations for rt and rd be employed to calculate rvt and rvd. The performance of the existing correlations for rt and rd to predict rvt and rvd has been evaluated employing TMY2 data and data of 6 IDMP (International Daylight Measurement Programme) [2] locations. It has been found that the correlation for rt due to Collares-Pereira and Rabl [3] predicts rvt satisfactorily. Correlation due to Satyamurty and Lahiri [4] for rd predicts rvd satisfactorily after suitable modification.

Full text
Abstract:
Achromatopsia -- the absence of color vision -- is a relatively rare condition which can result from a variety of congenital and acquired ocular disorders. The most common form of achromatopsia is complete (typical) rod monochromatism, which is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait and is characterized by severely reduced visual acuity, pendular nystagmus and photophobia. X-linked recessive incomplete (blue cone) monochromatism, in which the patient has both rod and blue cone function, has a very similar presentation clinically, and is often confused with complete rod monochromatism. Less common etiologies include autosomal recessive incomplete achromatopsia (red or green cone function only) and a number of acquired cone and rod-cone dystrophies and degenerations; any of these conditions may present with varying degees of color vision loss, acuity loss, photophobia and nystagmus. From a clinical standpoint, the correct diagnosis of an achromat is necessary for appropriate patient managment and, with hereditary forms, genetic counseling. Yet most practitioners base their diagnosis of rod monochromacy on a minimal amount of information.

Abstract:
Vascularization is critical for success of tissue engineering applications. Previous studies by us and others have shown that self-assembling peptide nanoscaffold RAD16-II promotes de novo capillary formation (angiogenesis) in vitro and neovascularization in vivo, and is a promising material for tissue engineering applications [1, 2]. However, the molecular mechanisms for cell interactions with this material are not known. Angiogenesis is mediated via interactions between integrins, which are expressed on the surface of activated endothelial cells (ECs), and extracellular matrix proteins. Among several integrins, αvβ3 is the most abundant and influential receptor regulating angiogenesis [3]. The αvβ3 integrin binds to its ligands via Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) biding motif. However, there are no RGD motifs on RAD 16-II peptide. Instead, it contains three RAD motifs. Studies have shown that non-specific binding of αvβ3 with RAD can be retained through R and D sides [4]. The objective of this study, therefore, is to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms of RAD16-II nanoscaffold interactions with microvascular endothelial cells. We hypothesize that non-specific interactions between RAD16-II peptide nanoscaffold and αvβ3 integrin result in phosphorylations of β3 cytoplasmic domain, which then activate downstream angiogenic signaling pathways and promote angiogenesis.

Raninen, Antti, Antti Iivanainen, and Jyrki Rovamo. "Critical flicker frequency to red targets on yellow backgrounds at different luminance levels across the temporal visual field of man." In OSA Annual Meeting. Washington, D.C.: Optica Publishing Group, 1990. http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/oam.1990.thoo5.

Full text
Abstract:
When the number of ganglion cells stimulated at various retinal locations are kept constant by M-scaling deep-red targets on deep red backgrounds, then log CFF = 0.19 log F + 1.3, where F is luminous flux collected by ganglion-cell receptive-field centers and is calculated by multiplying photopic retinal illuminance by Ricco's area at each eccentricity. Thus, the Ferry–Porter law for red stimuli can be generalized across the visual field by replacing stimulus luminance by F (cf.1). Although red targets stimulated predominantly cones, rod intrusion was possible. Therefore, in the present study we measured CFF to red targets on yellow backgrounds as a function of eccentricity and retinal illuminance. Temporal modulation visible to cones was 30%. However, scotopic temporal modulation was only 1%, which is never visible to rods.2 We found that log CFF = 0.27 log F + 1.1 (r2 = 0.95). The slope is steeper than in our earlier study (see above) because as retinal illuminance decreased CFF to red targets on yellow backgrounds became progressively lower than CFF to red targets on red backgrounds. Thus, the contribution of rods to CFF increases with decreasing retinal illuminance, even for deep-red targets and backgrounds. Moreover, the Ferry–Porter law can be generalized across the visual field, even when flicker is made invisible to rods by using red targets on yellow backgrounds.
