Ahmad, Saeedah. "James and Russell on neutral monism." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1994. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/106905/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis evaluates and compares two versions of neutral monism, one developed by William James and the other by Bertrand Russell. Both argued against Cartesianism in favour of a "subjectless given" as the basic stuff which constitutes both mind and matter. My evaluation will demonstrate that James’s and Russell's supposedly neutral entities are not neutral as their exponents claim because they fail to satisfy important criteria set for a theory to be genuinely neutral. There are two fundamental elements within my discussion of the neutral entities. Firstly, I shall demonstrate that although James's initial repudiation of dualistic epistemology of subject and object, knower and known, led him to avoid metaphysical dualism of mental and physical, in Cartesian sense, by committing him to the view that there is one kind of entity called "experience", his final analysis admitted an internal distinction within the supposedly simple neutral entities. I shall call this covert dualism. Accepting James’s radical empiricism as an archetype, Russell’s early commitment to neutral monism led him to assert three distinctive kinds of entities, sensation (neutral), image (subjective) and unperceived (objective), and was therefore not complete as that of James. In order to bring his theory in line with James, Russell, in his mature version, entirely repudiated the dualistic view of perception which, following Moore, he accepted, to reject idealism. Russell declared percept as the neutral entity, which is both mental and material at once. But by re-introducing epistemological dualism, as James did, Russell admitted that a percept is not simple but complete bundle of compresent qualities and relations. 1 shall argue that like James’ his theory also collapses into covert dualism. Secondly, I shall argue that to produce a genuinely explanatory theory of neutral entities James and Russell exploited science to justify their theories. In course of their analysis they produced various arguments which has been considered as circular. An attempt will be made to show that the apparent circularity of their analysis is really part of a sophisticated programme, now known as bootstrapping. The notion of a bootstrap strategy has recently been developed in philosophy of science, and suggests a way in which the same evidence can be used to generate both a general and specific hypothesis. The thesis is divided into eight chapters. Chapters one, two and four are largely exegetical and chronological, and discuss the development of neutral monism especially in James and Russell’s philosophy together with the general characteristics of the theory as distinguished from other theories explaining mind and matter. Chapters three, five and six critically analyse James’s and Russell’s versions respectively to show their theories collapse into covert dualism. In chapter seven we argue that the alleged circularities in their theory are non- viscious and their employment of a bootstrap strategy introduced a profound innovation in epistemology.

Abstract:
The broad objective of this study is to examine the recurrence and the posterity of some arguments drawn up by Bertrand Russell to answer one of the main ontological question: How the elements of the being are related ? How can we answer this question without raising a bradleyan endless regress? Several strategies are assessed here: answering these questions by questioning the status of the bradleyan regresses (vicious or harmless regresses?), defining the nature of the relations (particulars or universals?, internal or external relations?) or using the epistemological perspective of the truthmakers. This study is focused on D. Armstrong’s Immanent Realism, K. Campbell’s Theory of Tropes, G. Rodriguez-Pereyra’s Resemblance Nominalism, and D. W. Mertz’s Moderate Realism

The acquaintance is the relation between the mind and certain objects called russell´s objects. These objects are restricted to individuals who can think directly. Appearances, such as colors, are examples of russell´s objects. The acquaintance is a primitive epistemic relation. The individual has the ability to discriminate those objects, distinguishing them from others in the traditional interpretation of acquaintance. The objects are known by acquaintance in the sense that the mind can identify them perfectly. In this case, the subject can not be wrong about the interpretation and the knowledge of what is thinking about it. A individual can, however, be in a relation with one and the same individual at different times, not realizing that it is the same. The cases of the continuous phenomena show that, explaining the difficulty in demonstrating the reference equality through changes in the character of the experience.

Hamilton, John. "Russell and the metaphysics of neutral monism." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2013. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/46483/.

Full text
Abstract:
My overall aim in this thesis is to elucidate the precise nature of Russell's mature 'neutral monist' metaphysic. I show how an understanding of it has been hampered by pervasive misunderstandings. The approach I take is an historical one, and my account reveals that, after his adoption of neutral monism in 1918, there were no radical changes in his worldview, and certainly no lurch from a supposed quasi-phenomenalistic system prior to 1921, to a causal theory of perception after 1927. Instead, the earlier system is not as phenomenalistic as is sometimes supposed and his later philosophy is a development, not a repudiation, of the themes in the earlier. Russell sought to show how his metaphysic dovetails with the outcome of modern physics in his 1927 book The Analysis of Matter. I seek to show how a proper understanding of modern physics indeed leads to Russellian conclusions. I also discuss the implications of quantum mechanics for metaphysics – a task which Russell could not have performed when he wrote The Analysis of Matter, since QM was still very much in a state of flux. I show how Russell moved from empiricism to a naturalistic position in the theory of knowledge, and in doing so supplied a definitive solution to Hume's scepticism. Once again, the usual perception of him as an “empiricist” fails to do justice to the complexity and subtlety of his philosophy. Finally, I argue that Russell's solution to the mind-body problem is the only one with any chance whatsoever of being true. In all this I seek to show how Russell's philosophy has been unjustly neglected in contemporary debates and how it can provide elegant solutions to contemporary philosophical puzzles in the philosophy of science, epistemology and the mind-body problem.

Abstract:
Silver Russell syndrome (SRS) is characterized by severe intrauterine and postnatal growth retardation in association with a typical small triangular face and other variable features. Most cases are sporadic. Genetic and epigenetic disturbances on imprinted regions at chromosomes 7 and 11 are detected in about 50% of the patients. Most frequently, SRS is caused by altered gene expression on chromosome 11p15 due to hypomethylation of the telomeric imprinting center (ICR1) that is present in at least 40% of the patients. Maternally inherited duplications encompassing the centromic imprinting center (ICR2) domains at 11p15 are present in about 1-2% of cases. Maternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 7 (mUPD7) is identified in 5-10% of patients. More recently, chromosomal microdeletions and microduplications were detected in a small group of SRS patients, some of them with possible pathogenic effect. This leaves approximately half of the SRS cases without a genetic cause determined. Our cohort consisted of 64 unrelated Brazilian patients with clinical diagnosis of SRS. DNA copy number changes and the methylation pattern on chromosome 11p15 were investigated in 49 patients by MS-MLPA, and 21 (43%) presented with hypomethylation of ICR1. In one patient (2%), both centers (ICR1 and ICR2) were hypomethylated, a complex alteration that has been reported in ~4% of SRS patients that shows hypomethylation of ICR1. In a further patient (2%), we detected a ~1.6 Mb microduplication encompassing the whole ICR2 domain, but not the ICR1. This microduplication was shown to segregate in a three-generation family, and was associated with SRS whenever maternally transmitted: there were four instances of paternal transmissions of the microduplication from a single male uniformly resulting in normal offspring, and five maternal transmissions, via two clinically normal sisters, with all the children exhibiting SRS. A maternally inherited microduplication also restricted to the ICR2 domain and associated with SRS in a boy was described previously. Among the duplicated genes in both cases, CDKN1C is a likely candidate for the SRS phenotype, because it encodes a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor that negatively regulates cell proliferation and growth, and plays a crucial role in human fetal development. This new case brings confirmatory evidence that microduplications restricted to the ICR2 domain result in SRS when maternally transmitted. It also shows that no apparent phenotypic change is present when ICR2 duplication is paternally inherited. By genotyping chromosome 7 microsatellites, we identified three patients (4.7%) with mUPD(7), in the cohort of 64 patients. The frequencies of hypomethylation of ICR1 (43%) and mUPD(7) (4.7%) among our patients are in accordance with the literature, and point to a proper selection of patients with SRS, from the clinical point of view. The investigation of submicroscopic chromosomal imbalances by a-CGH was performed in 19 patients in whom (epi)genetic mutations at 11p15 and mUPD(7) had been excluded. Most patients showed no changes (n = 7) or had only CNV considered to be polymorphic (n = 8). Four potentially pathogenic microdeletions were detected, on chomosomes 2p23.3 (~320 Kb), 13q24 (~94.3 Kb), 15q11.2 (~320 Kb) and 16p13.11 (~95.8 Kb). In neither case we could establish a direct relationship between the imbalance and the phenotype, because it was not possible to investigate both parents or the change was present in a clinically normal parent or it had been reported in normal individuals, without, however, indication of being polymorphic. Incomplete penetrance or unmasking of a pathogenic recessive allele on the homologous chromosome are two possible explanations to the pathogenic effect of a microdeletion inherited from a clinically normal parent. Three recent studies that used microarrays to identify genes or chromosomal regions associated with SRS, wherein the genetic cause was unknown, detected microdeletions and microduplications, some of them potentially pathogenic: a microdeletion at 15q26.3, including the IGF1R gene, was identified in two patients; other microdeletions included the IGF2BP3 gene at 7p15, GPC5 gene at 13q31.3, MAPK1 gene at 22q11.2 and HMGA2 gene at 12q14, which were considered candidates, possibly influencing growth. This set of results, including ours, indicates that the investigation of submicroscopic chromosomal imbalances should be extended to a larger cohort of SRS patients, in the search for chromosomal regions and genes that may be causally associated with the syndrome. In 30 SRS patients, we searched for point mutations in the CDKAL1 gene by direct sequencing of coding regions. This gene was considered a candidate for SRS, after being disrupted in one of our SRS patients with a t(5;6). No pathogenic mutation was detected and, therefore, point mutations in the coding region of CDKAL1 do not appear to be a common cause of SRS. In 18 of the 30 patients, we investigated the presence of microdeletions and microduplications by a-CGH and found no changes encompassing CDKAL1 gene. Considering the small cohort size, we cannot definitely exclude the possibility that changes in CDKAL1 gene may contribute to the etiology of SRS.

Cintra, Fernando Vogel.

Full text
Abstract:
In the present dissertation, Bertrand Russell’s theory of descriptions is analyzed, as well as Peter Strawson’s criticism of this theory. In order to better contextualize the theory of descriptions, George Moore’s theory of Platonic Atomism is firstly analyzed. This theory represents the first step of the revolt against the Hegelian influenced idealism that dominated English philosophy at the end of the 19th century. After that, Bertrand Russell’s early philosophy is outlined in its main features, that is, his philosophy from the first years of the 20th century, which may be called “logicism”, since it had, as its main theoretical purpose, the demonstration that all pure mathematics could be reduced to a few fundamental and indefinable logical notions. Subsequently, the philosophical innovation represented by Russell’s theory of descriptions is analyzed, and the manner in which it deals with important logical and philosophical problems is exhibited. One can say that Russell’s theory of descriptions is one of the most significant philosophical theories of the 20th century. After that, Peter Strawson’s criticism of the theory of descriptions is presented, as well as Russell’s rebuttal of it. The dissertation ends with a brief assessment of three fundamental points of contention between Russell and Strawson: the role of ordinary language in philosophical analysis, the truth value of propositions expressed by sentences such as “The present King of France is bald”, and the question regarding proper names.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A first need for the interpretation of atomic spectra lead physicist and chemists towards a continuous development of models in order to understand the order, known as electronic configuration, within an atom. Since Bohr's model, it was accepted that a signa! in a spectrum corresponds to an electronic transition; nowadays the complexity of energy levels, generated by unpaired electrons in an orbital, can be understood in terms of L and S coupling in lighter atoms. This article details the extent of the use of such diagrams, expecting to be a reference in order to achieve the method and its results.

Funk, Russell. "MMPI and the juvenile sex offender Russell Funk." PDXScholar, 1988. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/3810.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined the effectiveness of the MMPI in identifying juvenile sex offenders. This study examined the hypothesis that previously identified subscales of the MMPI (i.e., Toobert et al. (1959) Pe scale and Dolan (1986) Ic scale) could be used in discriminating juvenile sex offenders (n=l 02) (and subgroups of juvenile sex offenders i.e., pedophiles n=79, and incest perpetrators n=41) from a control group of 40 juvenile offenders who had been adjudicated for non-sex related crimes. The study yielded results which indicate that the Pe subscale was not effective in discriminating pedophiles from non-pedophile sex offenders or from the control group. The results also indicated that the Ic subscale was not effective in discriminating incest perpetrators from non-incest sex offenders or the control group. The results from the data also indicate that the control group appeared more pathological than the sex offender group, based on their respective MMPI profiles. In addition, in comparison with previous research on adult sex offenders, there appears to be differences between adult sex offenders and juvenile sex offenders when comparing mean two point code scores. Problems in defining subgroups were discussed. A lack of research in the area of juvenile sex offenders was identified and a strong recommendation for further research in this area was made.

This paper aimed the realization of a study concerning the philosophical epistemology of the concept of number, in which it still makes sense to ask: What is number? In this perspective, we have assumed as problematic the philosophical duality of the conceptualizations of numbers, according to Axiomatic (proposed by Peano) e by the Set Theory and Logics (proposed by Russell), being the Conceptualization of Number the problem of this research, concerning the possibility of introducing an ultimate definition to this concept. The focus of this research is in the polemics that exists about the number introduced by Russell (1872-1970) contrary to Piano s (1858-1932), taking as a basis Otte s criticism, introduced in the article: B. Russell Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy , 2001. The research was developed using, as a reference, the sense of Complementarity, as well as using proper qualitative methodological research procedures. As a conclusion, we are able to claim that numbers are: on one hand, characteristics of certain classes and, on the other hand, operative concepts. This way, the existence of polemics between philosophers like Frege and Russell, who have favored predicative aspects, that is, they define number in terms of cardinality and, others like Grassmann, Dedekind and Peano who have highlighted the ordinal numbers, justify Otto s proposition of complementarity between the approaches. The possibility of having cognitive and didactical consequences on the teaching in the use of one or another approach of conceptualization of the number or both, as Otte intends, makes this study a contribution to Mathematical Education

__________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
This essay is a survey of the literature on Russell´s theory of definite descriptions from 1950 to 2005 approximately. The work presents arguments in favor of Russell´s theory and against it. In the first part, it is examined whether Russell´s theory is capable of accommodate the referential use of definite descriptions. In the second part, it is examined how it handles incomplete definite descriptions. The author of the essay believes that Russell´s theory has not been refuted and that most (but not all) of the criticism was properly met.

Paris 8, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007PA082847.

Full text
Abstract:
I propose to present and translate George Russell's principal work, "The Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization", perhaps the most widely recognized contribution to jazz theory. The Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu stated: "It is one of the two most splendid books about music; the other one is 'My Musical Language' (1944), by Olivier Messiaen. " George Russell was born in 1923 in Cincinnati. Around 1945 during a long illness, he undertook theoretical researches that in 1953 culminated in the publication of his treatise. Meanwhile, he belonged to an informal circle of jazz musicians gathered around Gil Evans who reflected on their practice (Miles Davis was among these musicians). Russell's treatise focuses on the organizational principles of jazz, until then more or less unspoken, and blends the theory of "harmonic modality" developed at the end of the nineteenth-century within the classical tradition (Debussy, Ravel) with the real praxis of jazzmen. One of its most important contributions is the connection it draws between chords and certain modes. But George Russell goes farther: he associates "modal" theory with the chromaticism inherited from modern music; he allows jazz to approach the shores of "pan-tonality", drawing near atonality without being drowned in it, distinguishing his project, therefore, from free jazz (Russell famously said, "freedom without logic is chaos"). Russell's treatise, though often plundered in many a book or article (which often don't understand its revolutionary dimension) is seldom studied, even in the United States

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Dana Sajdi
The British physicians Dr. Alexander Russell M.D., FRS (c.1715 - 1768) and Dr. Patrick Russell M.D., FRS (1726/7 - 1805), both British Levant Company servants, wrote and published two editions in 1756 and 1794, respectively. These brothers resided in Aleppo, Syria, when it was a provincial capital of the Ottoman Empire and recorded their observations and empirical observations in a literary work that would later become the two editions of The Natural History of Aleppo. These editions are vital references for modern scholars concerned with Ottoman Syria, Levantine commercial activity and European presence, and the city of Aleppo. However, these very scholars ignore the significant fact that these two editions were written by two different individuals at two different points in history. Thus, this MA thesis aims to investigate the two editions and illustrate how the variations in these publications were the result of both coexisting and correlated processes that culminated in an eighteenth-century phenomenon of the transformation of British global presence from a commercial power to a modern empire. Various socio-economic, political, and cultural changes related to the Enlightenment, Industrial Revolution, and the growth of Western, especially British, global hegemony, resulted in a particular attitude towards what became constructed as the "Orient". This thesis examines the ways in which the interrelated processes of the rise of modern scientific disciplines, the quest for order, the emergence of the culture of collecting, and the new emphasis on the value of "useful knowledge" rendered the "Orient" a place to be ordered and studied, hence, to be controlled. The eighteenth century witnessed several decisive events that facilitated this phenomenon; with Britain's victory in the Seven Years' War (1756 - 1763), particularly at the Battle of Plassey (1757), Britain deviated from its previous position as a commercial power and emerged victorious as an imperial empire. The project attempts to demonstrate how the Russell Brothers' book on Aleppo represents a movement from the fascination with natural history, that is, the topography and botany of Aleppo (Alexander Russell's edition), to an attempt at a comprehensive study of a people, language, and culture (Patrick Russell's edition). The change in focus and tenor found in Patrick's edition represents a shift from natural history to ethnographic, a shift that is essentially Orientalist. Though the book is about the relatively marginal city of Aleppo, the shift between the two editions reflects not only the change of the character of British global dominance, which was, after the 1857 Indian Mutiny, officially colonial, but also the very national identity of Britain. This thesis, then, is a study of how Aleppo was conceived and reconceived through the prism of the change of British relationship to India from a commercial entanglement to imperial domination. The variations between the two editions, then, were a result of changing circumstances and consequent shifting attitudes. I not only attempt to illustrate Britain's transformation from a mercantile and commercial power to a colonial and imperial empire, but also how the variations of the Russell brothers' two editions, from a collection of observations to a scientific contribution to a body of specialized knowledge, were the direct results of the two authors' transformations from the botanist to the orientalist

Abstract:
That eighteenth-century England produced no composer of the calibre of Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven cannot be denied: however, in the past this fact has led to an unjust dismissal of English music of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. More recently there has been an awakening of interest in the music of this era. It was a time of intense musical activity in England, but native musicians were coerced, by public taste and fashion, into subservience to foreign performers and composers. This enforced inferior status was not totally unproductive, however, since it brought both professional musicians and the public face to face with new developments from abroad; some indigenous composers deliberately shunned foreign influences, some largely were left untouched by them because of their seclusion in the conservatism of the Church, while others embraced the new style. The life of one musician, who lived and worked in London, is surveyed in the contexts of life and music in the metropolis. William Russell lived at a time of change: it was the end of a musical era when what we term Baroque influences were finally fading, when the Classical style--though established abroad--was not yet totally accepted in England, and yet it was a period of anticipation of the Romantic era. This study explores the answers to the question, 'Was Russell's music a prelude to the Romantic period, a postlude to the old style, or merely an interlude between the two?' Russell's principal works (the large-scale choral compositions and organ concerto--pieces which, traditionally, were performed together in the theatre) form the basis for this comprehensive investigation; study and performance scores are provided, illustrating that not all was dull and lifeless during that era. On the contrary, there was much indigenous productivity whose achievements were, and still are, commendable.
