Abstract:
Abstract The accommodation of Confucianism articulated by Matteo Ricci (1552–1610) reflected a Neoscholastic approach in which rational agreement was the primary hinge of interreligious engagement. Ricci’s rationalism, however, was somewhat atypical among Jesuits of the late sixteenth century who often made overtures towards typology to explain the cultural and religious phenomena encountered in their missionary activities in East Asia and the New World. This article focuses on the writings of two Jesuits, the encyclopedist Antonio Possevino (1533–1611) and the China missionary Michele Ruggieri (1533–1611), who collaborated on the first European-language publication to include an extract of the Confucian corpus. It examines how Possevino adapts the manuscripts on China that Ruggieri provided him while in Rome in the early 1590s, and the tensions between the scholastic approach to evangelisation proposed in earlier chapters of the Bibliotheca selecta and the more extravagant typological strategies articulated in Ruggieri’s original manuscripts.

Abstract:
When European missionaries first entered Asia and the New World, they largely transposed to their new contexts European catechisms that assumed the intellectual passivity of the catechumen. The Jesuits, however, soon realized that such textual models would not be appropriate in East Asia which boasted its own sophisticated philosophical traditions. This article explores how Michele Ruggieri (1543–1607) deploys and adapts in his pioneering Chinese catechism, Tianzhu shilu 天主實錄 (The true record of the Lord of Heaven, 1584), innovations in the catechism genre that Jesuit missionaries had originally developed for Japan. By comparing Ruggieri’s arguments for the existence of God with those found in the Catechismus christianae fidei (Catechism of the Christian faith, 1586) composed by Alessandro Valignano (1539–1606) for the Japan mission, this article shows that Ruggieri lays the groundwork for a transcultural natural theology that de-emphasizes metaphysics in favour of arguments derived from a shared ethical understanding and political analogies.

Abstract:
The ciliate Cryptocaryon irritans Brown, 1951 is a parasite of tropical marine fishes, being recorded chiefly from coral reef species (Laird, 1956; Burgess, 1978; Colorni, 1985). The disease, cryptocaryosis, accounts for fish mortalities in aquaria (De Graaf, 1973) and mariculture systems (Huff & Burns, 1981; Colorni, 1985; Kaige & Miyazaki, 1985; Rasheed, 1989); however, relatively few studies have been undertaken on the biology of C. irritans, as highlighted by Lorn & Dykova (1992). Sikama (1937) described the major features of the life cycle, infection of the fish epidermis alternating with a free-living phase of reproduction within a protective cyst. Most other investigations of C. irritans have been concerned with morphology (Sikama, 1937, 1938; Brown, 1951, 1963; Nigrelli & Ruggieri, 1966; Cheung et al., 1981; Colorni, 1988) with a recent work on the ultrastructure of the pellicle (Matthews et al., 1993). Little is known regarding the behaviour of free-living stages and the possible influence of environmental factors on transmission. Nigrelli & Ruggieri (1966) noted photopositive responses in theronts. The establishment and maintenance of C. irritans in mullet under controlled conditions (Burgess & Matthews, 1994) provided an opportunity further to investigate light in the survival strategy of this fish pathogen.

Abstract:
Disability Studies has experienced steady growth in the humanities, the social sciences, and education departments of a growing number of United States colleges and universities. One area of study that has remained static is undergraduate health science, where the number of schools offering a degree in disability studies has grown slightly from two in 2009 (Cushing & Smith, 2009b; Taylor & Zubal-Ruggieri, 2013) to four in 2015 (Zubal-Ruggieri, 2015). Some disability scholars believe that health science students are missing out on an opportunity to incorporate this perspective into their outlook and approach to disability. Longmore (1991) believes that "students interested in healthcare . . . need to have the opportunity to study this [disability] in the same way that they have the opportunity to study women's history or African American history or Asian history" (Stanford University News Service, Silent Screen Villains section, para.12). This opportunity can shape a group of healthcare professionals who view disability from a unique individual perspective. The purpose of this survey research study was to examine alumni self-perception of the impact of completing a one-semester (16 credit) disability studies concentration in an undergraduate health science major. Fifty-one alumni from a New York area public research 1 level university who graduated between 2006 and 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Health Science and a concentration in Disability Studies were surveyed to examine their perception of the helpfulness of the curriculum in four areas: practice and/or post-graduate study, comfort level interacting with people with disability, confidence level in ability to work with people with disability, and sensitivity and awareness of disability issues. This survey research study used descriptive statistics to analyze the responses to 10 Likert questions. The paper also includes comments from one open-ended question that allowed respondents to add additional thoughts and comments. The results strongly indicated that the health science alumni perceived a positive increase in the four focus areas as a result of completing the disability studies concentration.

Abstract:
Abstract. A community of ten ostracod species characterizes the hypersaline channels of Khor Al-Mufateh and Khor Al-Mamlaha. The dominant species in Khor Al-Mufateh are Loxoconcha (Loxoconcha) indica Jain, 1978; Gibboborchella venosa Gumey, 1979; Gibboborchella alata Gurney, 1979; and Hemicytheridea paiki Jain, 1978. L.(L.) indica, along with Neomonoceratina sp., dominate Khor Al-Mamlaha. Other species ranging from common to rare, include Carinocythereis (Carinocythereis) batei Jain, 1978; Callistocythere cf. flavidofusca intricatoides (Ruggieri), 1953; Loxoconcha (Loxoconcha) multiornata Bate & Gurney, 1981; Tanella cf. gracilis Kingma, 1948; and Xestoleberis rotunda Hartmann, 1964.Khor Al-Mufateh and Al-Mamlaha are divided into zones according to the distribution of ostracod species, which are dependant upon the richness and distribution of algae and the type of sediment. The ten ostracod species are salinity-tolerant and occur in the upper third of Khor Al-Mufateh and the lower half of Khor Al-Mamlaha with salinity ranging between 55–70‰ and 45–70‰, respectively. These zones are rich in algal growth with sediments varying from muddy carbonate sands to sandy mud. Most ostracod species are found in abundance during the summer exhibiting a rich diversity of algae genera and species.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Mixed vascular nevus (or nevus vascularis mixtus) represents an admixture of cutaneous vascular malformations of the telangiectatic type and angiospastic spots of nevus anemicus. It can occur as a purely cutaneous trait or as a hallmark of a neurocutaneous phenotype, the so-called mixed vascular nevus syndrome. The latter is characterized by the combination of paired vascular twin nevi and brain abnormalities of the Dyke–Davidoff–Masson type, consisting of crossed cerebral/cerebellar hemiatrophy with hypoplasia of the ipsilateral cerebral vessels, and homolateral hypertrophy of the skull and sinuses (hyperpneumatization) with contralateral hemispheric hypertrophy. In other cases, the paired vascular twin nevi and brain malformations of the Dyke–Davidoff–Masson type occur in association with systemic abnormalities consisting of facial asymmetry, skeletal anomalies, and disorders of autoimmunity. In 2014, Happle proposed to name the syndrome with the eponym Ruggieri–Leech's syndrome after the first two authors who reported (independently) this phenotype in different patients.Pathogenically, this complex phenotype suggests that embryonic pairing and somatic recombination of recessive (didymotic) alleles controlling the balance between constriction (i.e., nevus anemicus) and dilatation (i.e., nevus telangiectaticus) of blood vessels could be the primary event causing the phenomena of cutaneous and brain vascular twin spotting and the paired phenomena of skull hyperpneumatization versus hypertrophy and brain megalencephaly/colpocephaly versus cortical dysplasia.

Abstract:
This paper aims to analyse the different roles that enterprises have within a tourist destination by identifying the presence and possible role of leaders within the system. The Social Network Analysis (SNA) is a tool that offers a greater degree of understanding of the operation of the destination. The map of commercial relations between the leading players of tourist supply can provide greater insight into the main relations existing between enterprises and the principles that ensure and regulate operation. In keeping with this objective and building on the results of a previous paper (Iannolino and Ruggieri, 2012), the authors have focused their attention on the role of some enterprises operating in San Vito Lo Capo (Italy) to determine the extent of their aggregating force vis-à-vis the destination. The ego-network analysis (ENA) has been applied to the existing relations between the enterprises at the destination San Vito Lo Capo, to determine the presence or absence of groups of enterprises, called Egos, which, with respect to the others, play an important role or are to be considered key subjects for the entire system in commercial terms. Following on this first results, the paper explores ways in which enterprises belonging to the ego networks are the key players responsible for a better climate of cooperation and trust among all of the system's enterprises.

Abstract:
The ‘Protect, Respect, and Remedy’ Framework and the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights drafted by John Ruggie, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Business and Human Rights, place responsibility on multinational corporations to respect human rights in conducting their relationships with business partners. The article explicates and criticizes the normative conception of responsibility underpinning Ruggie’s approach. It does so by juxtaposing Ruggie’s approach with an alternative normative conception of shared responsibility towards workers’ rights, according to which responsibility to prevent and remedy labour rights violations should be shared by all participants in the global chains of production. The shared responsibility approach offers a set of five principles for allocating responsibility among the different participants, whereas Ruggie takes into consideration only two of these principles. Thus, we argue that the moral responsibility of business proposed by the Framework and Guiding Principles is too narrow and does not allow for a substantive protection of labour rights in global supply chains. The Framework and the Guiding Principles should be revised to place stringent responsibilities on multinational corporations. Such revisions are not only morally justified but could also be feasible, as demonstrated by recent developments, such as the creation of the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh and the Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety, as well as the demands raised by Ecuador and South Africa in the 26th session of the UN Human Rights Council.

In this article, the Jesuit José de Acosta’s interest in Andean quipus is analyzed as it evolved throughout his works, beginning in the preface of De procuranda indorum salute (1588) and reaching a point of arrival in his Historia natural y moral de las Indias (1590). In De procuranda, Acosta established different categories of “barbaric nations,” placing the Indians from Mexico and Peru after the Chinese and Japanese. The latter belonged to the first category of “barbaric nations” because of their judgement, a stable republic, laws, fortified cities, and—most importantly in Acosta’s eyes—use and knowledge of letters. In the Historia Acosta resumed aspects of this classification, with a focus on letters—or the lack of them—and writing, bringing China to the forefront. The difference with De procuranda was that Acosta’s Historia fed on fresh information from the first Jesuits to establish a mission in China, Michele Ruggieri (1543–1607) and Matteo Ricci (1552–1640), which invigorated Acosta’s analysis of letters, writing, and all that in his view could not be considered “letters” or “writing.” In the first section of this article, Acosta’s views on Andean quipus are analyzed, based mainly on his experience in the Peru mission. In the second section, focus shifts to Acosta’s analysis of letters and writing, especially in his Historia, in which China played a preeminent role, bringing out interesting points of comparison with the Andean quipus. In the conclusion, are reflections on Acosta’s own view of indigenous forms of writing in contrast with alphabetic script.

Abstract:
Abstract INTRODUCTION Spinal Neurofibromatosis (SNF), a distinct clinical entity of NF1, characterized by bilateral neurofibromas involving all spinal roots and a few, if any, cutaneous manifestations, entails greater morbidity than the classical form of disease. Nevertheless, there are no reliable patterns to sort out patients at risk for developing SNF. MATERIALS AND METHODS We investigated 19 NF1 families with at least one SNF member, 37 sporadic SNF patient and 100 NF1 patients with classical form of disease. We applied Targeted NGS using a panel consisting of 139 genes encoding RAS pathway effectors, neurofibromin interactors and genes mapping at 17q11.2 region. RESULTS In SNF patients we found a higher percentage of missense (21% versus 8%, p=0 0.016, OR 3.13 (95% CI 01.1 -8.2) and a lower percentage of nonsense NF1 mutations (12.5% versus 28%,, p= 0.026, OR 0.36 (95% CI 0.14–0.9) than in classical NF1 cases. Furthermore, we evaluated rare variants with damaging potential predictors in genes of the RAS pathway and in neurofibromin interactors. In more than one sporadic case possible pathogenic variants were found in LIMK2 (neurofibromin interactor), RASAL1, RASAL3, SOS1, A2ML1, MAP3K1 (RAS pathway effectors), while in more than one SNF family were detected RASAL1, RASAL3, MAP3K1 genes variations. CONCLUSIONS Our results confirm the correlation between NF1 genotype and SNF phenotype as previously reported (Ruggieri, 2015), suggesting that neurofibromin gain-of-functions mutations are associated to SNF. In some patients, the co-occurrence of potential pathogenic variants in NF1 related genes with severe phenotypes was detected supporting their role as modifier genes and promising therapeutic targets.

Abstract:
Landmark court decisions concerning admissibility of expert testimony indicate that industry guidelines and standards are an appropriate source in the formulation and defense of expert opinions. When properly applied, such guidelines and standards provide experts with ample support in adversarial arenas. Review of the court's responsibility to determine scientific basis and expert opinions resulted in the Daubert decision (Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc., 509 U.S. 579 [1993]). This Supreme Court decision recognized the importance of the "scientific validity of the principles that underlie a proposed sub-mission" as the most critical item the trial judge must evaluate. Furthermore, the Daubert decision established the trial judge's duty to make a preliminary assessment pursuant to Federal Rule of Evidence 104(a) "of whether the reasoning or methodology underlying the testimony is scientifically valid." Many lawsuits involving injuries, deaths, or product defects rely on expert opinion. Thus, the reliability of experts, and the validity of the methodology used by the experts in arriving at their conclusions, must be carefully evaluated. It has been shown that the processes governing the development of industry guidelines and standards address these factors (Ruggieri 2004), providing a sound basis for expert opinions where such guidelines exist and are used. Although there are a growing number of development activities producing such guidelines and standards for land-based incidents, there is little in the way of corollary activities specifically addressing the marine arena. Many of the methods and investigative protocols identified in these land-based guidelines and standards can be made marine applicable; however, substantive technology, operational, and regulatory differences between the land-based and marine paradigms indicate that marine-specific guideline documents are needed for marine applications.

Abstract:
Summary Augustine of Hippo was one of the most influential church father in Western Christianity. However, little attention has been paid Augustine’s significance for China in the early history of Sino-Western theological and cultural dialogue. This article aims to fill this gap by providing a historical and documentary study of the reception of Augustine in China, with particular focus on the issue of how the story of Augustine was introduced into China and how Augustinian studies was developed as an independent discipline at the present stage of Chinese theological studies. Examining the newly discovered Chinese biographies of Augustine, the first section explores the early introduction of the story of Augustine during the Ming and Qing Empires, identifying the Catholic and the Protestant approaches to the translation of Augustine’s biography. The second section addresses Augustinian studies in the Minguo period (1912–1949) and analyses various approaches to the study of St. Augustine. The third section proceeds to the stage of the establishment of the new China (PRC), with a careful survey of Augustinian studies after the Cultural Revolution (1976–present). In particular, the new exploration by Chinese Augustinian scholars over the last five years will be highlighted. Based on the above observations, the article concludes with the evaluation that the biography of St. Augustine was adopted by the early Jesuits as an additional advantage for propagating the Christian faith in the Chinese context, in which the policy of cultural accommodation (initiated by Michele Ruggieri and Matteo Ricci) had proved a useful approach for theological contextualization and would continue to serve as a resourceful strategy in the Chinese approach to Augustinian theology as well as an effective method for deepening the Sino-Western theological dialogue.

Abstract:
AbstractCutis tricolor is a skin abnormality consisting in a combination of congenital hyper- and hypopigmented skin lesions (in the form of paired macules, patches, or streaks) in close proximity to each other in a background of normal skin. It is currently regarded as a twin-spotting (mosaic) phenomenon. This phenomenon has been reported so far as a purely cutaneous trait, as a part of a complex malformation phenotype (Ruggieri–Happle syndrome), which includes distinct facial features, cataract, skull and vertebral defects, long bones dysplasia, corpus callosum, cerebellar and white matter anomalies, cavum vergae and holoprosencephaly, and other systemic abnormalities. Cutis tricolor has been also reported as a distinct type with multiple, disseminated smaller skin macules (cutis tricolor parvimaculata) or in association with other skin disturbances (e.g., phacomatosis achromico-melano-marmorata) or in the context of other neurocutaneous phenotypes (e.g., ataxia-telangiectasia and phacomatosis pigmentovascularis) or as a sign of complex malformation phenotypes (e.g., microcephaly and dwarfism). More than 20 studies reporting 40 cases are present in the literature with pure cutaneous or syndromic cutis tricolor phenomena and are analyzed in the present study, confirming and expanding the overall phenotype of cutis tricolor. In particular, (1) the skin abnormalities of the cutis tricolor do not evolve over time; (2) there is a typical facial phenotype with long, elongated face, thick and brushy eyebrows, hypertelorism, deep nasal bridge with large bulbous nose, and anteverted nostrils; (3) the skeletal defects are mild-to-moderate and do not progress or cause relevant orthopedic complications; (4) the neurological/behavioral phenotype does not progress and the paroxysmal events (if present) tend to decrease over time; (5) only three patients developed early onset (treatable) cataracts. Different pathologic hypotheses have been postulated, including, early or late postzygotic mutations involving the same gene loci (in the context of the so-called dydymotic theory): such mechanisms can explain the overall skin, bone, lens, and nervous system phenomena of migration of different streaks of clones in the different tissues.

Abstract:
Multinational corporations (MNCs) are business actors who have activities beyond a country's boundaries. This MNCs activities cannot be denied to have an influence on human social life, one of them is human rights. With those regards, regulations at international level have difficulties, because MNCs have not been recognized as the subject of international law. Furthermore, in the context of human rights, MNCs cannot be held accountable, because in this case only the country as the duty bearer of human rights. These conditions make no rules that can bind MNCs behavior to human rights. This article will focus on discussing how the international community takes action on business and human rights issues and the measures that ASEAN can take to engage in business and human rights issues in Southeast Asia. Although, there are some international rules that are born from various international cooperation, but the nature of the rule is the majority of soft law. These business and human rights issues became the international community's attention for a long time until finally the United Nations (UN) Representative made UN Guiding Principles, which also known as Ruggie's Principles. Southeast Asia through AICHR can take several actions to advance the protection of human rights related to business activities as contained in UNGPs and Ruggie's principles, such as AICHR can undertake study literature, encourage Member States to take effective action, engage in dialogue and consultation with organs of ASEAN, community organizations, and other stakeholders, and create a binding legal instrument concerning business and human rights.
