Full textThis ethnographic research studies a rural valley crossed by the border between Italy and France – the Roya Valley – at the time of the "reception crisis", from 2017 to 2019. The research explores the effects of the “closure” of the political border throught systematic controls and militarization of the area, on the local social fabric. It shows how social boundaries are reconfigured through a study of the relationships between different cultural universes of the population. A network of inhabitants in solidarity with migrants – mostly a neorural population already active in cultural life and in the mobilization of the territory – emerge in the valley. At the same time, another part of the population, mainly made up of native familles de souche, stands up against solidarity actions. This antagonism gives rise to a series of consequences and social conflicts take shape in the territory. In this “social drama” the research analyzes in detail the neorural paths, the pre-existing social mobilizations in the valley and the solidarity with migrants. Drawing on social science literature on migration and borders, as well as rural studies, the research is guided by a series of research questions. What is the link between the commitment to an active rural cultural life, the mobilizations for the defense of the territory and solidarity with migrants stuck at the border? What meaning should be given to the expression “defense of the territory” claimed by various social parties in disagreement with each other ? How are the pre-existing cultural universes of the valley and their social boundaries reoriented ? To what extent and how does the rural characteristic of the valley influence the consequences of the migration question ? How is this universe of solidarity practices taking shape and with wich registers of action ? How do different rural areas, from multiple collective mobilization processes, participate in the processes of local resistance to neoliberal policies ?The method that guided the research is inductive, oriented by these research questions, and developed through an intense ethnographic process, based on immersion in the studied territory, through techniques such as participant observation and collection of oral sources, in particular semi-structured interviews. The originality of the thesis is twofold: in primis, it accounts for the results of research on an effervescent rural territory, at a historic moment when certain marginal places seem to present themselves as scenarios of social and cultural transformation, through mobilizations and alternative life practices, until now little documented in the social science literature. Secondly, in a scenario where more and more sociological studies are taking over the multiplication of borders in Europe, this research observes the phenomenon through the lenses, hitherto little explored, of rural territories

Full textToday, the situation of regional languages raises many questions, particularly with regard to the hinge and transition linguistic zones, such as the Alpes Maritimes department. A language contact zone between French, Italian, and more precisely Ligurian - present as far as Menton, where it is in transition with Provençal - the Roya valley is a complex plurilingual and pluricultural territory. On the French side, our study focuses on the languages of the villages of Tende, La Brigue and Breil-sur-Roya (from the north to the south of the upper valley of the French Roya), on which the linguists Werner Forner and Jean-Philippe Dalbera have worked extensively. On the Italian side, I focused my research on the towns of the lower Roya valley, Sanremo and Ventimiglia, in the south of Western Liguria, and on the villages of Triora and Pigna, further north.Beyond the conflicts of identities and the urgency of safeguarding languages through their transmission in associations, one of the thorniest problems remains the linguistic classification of local languages. Although the territory of the valley is officially considered to be an Occitan area, linguists firmly oppose Ligurian-Alpine membership. From a sociolinguistic point of view, our aim will be to go beyond purely linguistic considerations to bring out the speakers' representations of their culture and of speaking to them.As far as our fieldwork is concerned, it is part of "the study of authentic language practices in a social context is a matter of sociolinguistics, in the broadest sense" Gadet (2003: 5) within a socioconstructivist epistemological framework of complex thinking and ethno-sociolinguistics theory (Calvet, 1993, Blanchet, 2000). Our research is situated in the field of languages in contact and is oriented towards a variationist (Labov, 1976) and interactional (Hymes, 1982; Gumperz, 1989 a and b) sociolinguistics, with the study of the heterogeneity of the linguistic systems and the linguistic heterogeneity of the social groups in our survey. We also interrogate in this framework the question of domination phenomena (Marcellesi and Gardin 1974, Blanchet 2018, Colonna 2020)

Full textGlobal change is expected to impact species abundance and distribution, which should result in species extinctions from local to global scales. Therefore, mapping species' current distribution, understanding current processes, and modeling potential futures are essential to anticipate the potential consequences of global change and to protect biodiversity. This PhD thesis assessed potential global change impact on some plant species distribution in the South-East of France and in the Roya valley by 2100. To do this, the method consists of (i) modeling and describing species' current distribution, (ii) acquiring a clear understanding of the current issues and identifying vulnerable populations, (iii) identifying and analyzing recent changes impact on species population, and (iv) modeling the future distribution of species. The method used reveals, first, that a model which simulates species demographic processes, and based on a robust population mapping as the actual condition, allows to study different aspect of vegetation. On the second hand, it reveals that the accumulation over a long period of time of small changes in population dynamics results in significant changes in species distribution and population density.Indeed, the results of this thesis suggest that global change should cause changes in species distribution and population density in the Roya Valley and in South-East France. Thus, global change is expected to cause complex changes established at a species scale and which are dependent on climate scenario considered. It appears that the species studied should be able to persist for some time in environments that should no longer be suitable, and, on the other hand, that their capacity for propagation would not allow them to colonize all the environments that should become suitable. Therefore, the results of this work indicate that global change could lead to less important changes than predicted by correlative models or climate shifts. The results of this study suggest that conservation priorities should concern, firstly, coastal endemic or specialized Mediterranean species, secondly, specific alpine and subalpine species, and lastly, mountain and Mediterranean species. The BiogeoProspect model developed in this thesis could offer the possibility to determine the possible futures of biodiversity and the most adapted ways to protect it with all the territorial stakeholders concerned

Full textThe drainage basin of the upper Doubs valley stretches over 910 km2 in central Jura, between Switzerland and France. The area is clearly karstic, and comprises many lacustrine and palustrine formations whose fillings provided essential data to assess the environmental conditions and the evolution of prehistoric societies during Tardiglacial and the beginning of Holocene. We present here a revision of the prehistoric peopling based on the study of pollen evidences gathered on 18 references sites and on the data provided by the archaeological excavations of « la Roche aux Pêcheurs » and « les Prés Mourey » (Villers-le-Lac, France) and « le Col des Roches » (Le Locle, Switzerland). The earlier human settlements following the würm glacier melt can be dated to the Azilian, at the beginning of the Alleröd 12000 to 11500 cal BC. The peopling of the area starts again around 7500 cal CB. Five stages were mainly recognised between 7500 to 3900 cal BC, they document the end of the Mesolithic and the beginning of the Neolithic : Stage 1 is middle Mesolithic, end of the VIIIth millenium cal BC ; Stage 2 is late Mesolithic, 6700 to 6500 cal BC ; Stage 3 is final Mesolithic 1 between 6000 to 5300 cal BC ; Stage 4 is final Mesolithic 2 or early Neolithic, 5300 to 4900 cal BC ; Stage 5 is middle Neolithic (Saint-Uze Style) between 4900 and 3900 cal BC

Full textAlthough small in number today, mennonites were visibly present in the religious and economic landscape of the Upper Bruche Valley until the decline of the communities which began after the French Revolution. Mennonites from the Bruche come mainly from the Canton of Bern, and speak its dialect. Their attachment to adult baptism and to the teachings of the Bible placed them ad odds with the state churches and in particular with the reformer Zwingli. The authorities from Zurich and Bern persecuted them and pushed them into exile. The Mennonites sought refuge, in particular in Alsace and its Valleys : Sainte Marie-aux-Mines, but also in the Bruche Valley. The French Revolution marks the beginning of the decline of the French Anabaptist communities and also the beginning of an important immigration to the United States. The Upper Bruche Valley, standing between Alsace and Lorraine, is an interesting place to study the sociological, religious and linguistic characteristics of this population, for those characteristics are different from the ones of the catholic and protestant french-speaking population that also live there. Therefore, the matter is not only to study the Mennonites communities in their inner way of functioning, but also to analyse their interactions with the other populations. Throughout diverse and shattered sources, this work will end to a portrait of the anabaptist reality in the Bruche Valley under several perspectives : theological, linguistic, historic, sociologic and prosopographic

Full textThe Queyras is particularly exposed to the vagaries of torrential and gravitational origin. As part of the SAMCO project, a systemic study was conducted on this space. Combining the study of hazards and the assessment of vulnerability, this analysis was conducted at different spatial scales in order to conform to the expectations of risk managers. This research work is divided into five parts. The first part is devoted to the analysis of the factors that may predispose the Haut-Guil basin to the triggering of hazards of torrential and gravitational origin. The geological, geomorphological, anthropogenic and hydroclimatic features of the Haut-Guil basin are exposed. This work has identified the main risks and highlighted the role of sedimentary transfers and east-return phenomena in the genesis of risks. The second part focuses on one of the basin's most active sub-basins for sedimentary transfers: the Peynin. The objective was to assess the role of sediments in the genesis of hazards. The study focused on the characterization and quantification of Peynin sedimentary stocks, the quantification of sedimentary transfers, the establishment of a 20-year sedimentary budget, and the analysis of functional connectivity of the basin. Peynin. This work has made it possible to formalize the Peynin sedimentary waterfall and to highlight the role of torrential lavas in recharging intermediate stocks. This work also highlighted the need for stock recharging as a condition for the outbreak of catastrophic floods. In the third part are exposed the maps produced for each of the hazards taken into account: torrential floods, landslides and avalanches. The torrential raw hazard was mapped by diachrony and hydraulic modelling. Landslide hazard was mapped following a modelling of landslide susceptibility. The avalanche hazard was mapped from the completed CLPA maps. This work highlighted the strong exposure of the municipalities of the Upper Valley of the Guil to the vagaries of torrential and gravitational hazards. The exposure of the communes of Lower Queyras and the Aigues valleys is less. In the fourth part we looked at the vulnerability component of the risk. The latter was evaluated in its biophysical and social dimensions, first separately and then jointly to give an overview of the overall vulnerability of the territory. The potential consequences of the various hazards on the bio-physical issues of Queyras were assessed, and individual and collective perceptions of risks were analysed. This work carried out, we proposed an innovative method to jointly evaluate the biophysical and socio-economic aspects of vulnerability. On the biophysical aspect, it is the municipalities of the upper Valley of the Guil that appear the most vulnerable. On the social side, the trend is reversed. In the fifth part, we analyzed the risks and their possible evolutions in a context of global change. It outlines the work on our risk analysis in Queyras. They are accompanied by a reflection on the resilience of Queyrassin communities and on the modalities of risk management at the watershed and community level. Four scenarios for the evolution of land use in the 2050 and 2100 horizons are presented. These scenarios simulate possible changes in the territory in the face of different socio-economic contexts. In general, the risks are very high in Queyras however, the queyrassine switches show obvious signs of resilience

Full textThis PhD studies the interactions between ancient societies and the fluvial environment located in a micro-region of the French Upper Rhone Valley (Isle Crémieu and Bas Bugey). We tried to understand the rhythms and the processes of evolution of this fluvial anthroposystem on the long term, what means how social and fluvial systems fit and adjust each other. We had to reconstruct the evolution of the hydrosystem, and the land-use since the Neolithic period. We carried out a multidisciplinary approach that integrates social sciences (archeology, history, geography) and paleo-environmental sciences (geoarchaeology, archaeobotany, archaeozoology) to achieve these goals. The results allowed us to discuss the intricacies of climate and human causalities on the evolution of the fluvial environment. They also allowed us to estimate the influence of hydrosystem changes on land-use patterns (human settlements, agrarian systems. . . ). It was therefore question of the fluvial risk management by pre-protohistoric and historic societies

The increase of life time led to an increase of marriages and at the same time the decrease ofinfantile mortality determined the rise of children who reached the reproductive age.On the other hand, the age of partners at their first marriage, the number of children, theprotogenesic and intergenesic intervals remain constant

Full textAssumptions on different farm type behaviours towards rural land, in the hautesarthe valley, are derived from a farm structure survey. They are verified with a second survey directly conducted on farm land practices, that is to say practical and observable results of farmers' land decisions. The different practices are then classified according to land features involved, initiating factors, and occuring period within the farm life cycles. Analysing those land practice positions with regard to the farm global development allows to distinguish several types of trajectories. These trends differ according to farm growth mode, land accountability in the farm global increase, importance of land heritage, and the role of social relationships in access to land. Farmers' individual plans on their lands, also referable as strategies, definitely inflect these trajectories. Conclusion discusses the ranging of land strategy explaining factors. It also offers information for rural management and farm development, and proposes methodological approaches in the analysis of farm-environment relationships

Full textLn many industrial basins across Europe, the industrial towns and factory-towns have been build up around a production systemthat managed, developed and animated the territory almost itself. Due to this functioning exclusively dedicated to industry, thedecline of a great majority of these urban industrial territories was particularly brutal during the crisis of the 1970s, causingsevere consequences on the economic, demographic, social, urban, environmental and landscape levels. This PhD Thesis provides food for thought in regard to the strategic issues of a sustainable urban renewal, as a sum of consistentand correlated actions, intended for revitalize and restructure a deteriorated and/or obsolete urban territory. ln the case thatwe focuse on former post-industrial urban territories, a sustainable urban redevelopment involves a revitalization of the economicfa bric and requires a coherent reorganization of the territorial functioning; it is notably based on identity and urban potentialof many industrial heritages and may appeal to leverages in order to set in motion or catalyze the transition from an obsoleteindustrial approach to a sustainable urban logic. The analysis of the cross-border urban territory of the upper Alzette valley, in the French-Luxembourgish iron field, is particularlyinteresting. lts urban redevelopment is mainly determined by the Luxembourgish metropolitan dynamic, which highlightsthe necessity to operate changes of scale. Moreover, the ambitious mixed urban redevelopment of the Luxembourgish industrialwasteland Belval-West, and also the choice of French public stakeholders to commit to a sustainable approach, are very instructivegrounds for observation

Full textAny water policy oscillates between multiple vocations - social, environmental, economic, patrimonial - and arouses frequent controversies. It deploys itself according to sectorized actions, to contradictory interests and to different social representations. Today, the confliction about river landscapes re-organizes itself around a new purpose promulgated by the Water Framework European Directive: reach the " good ecological state " in 2015. Therefore, the rearrangement of the intentionality of the action is the context of my doctoral research. This one approaches the landscape at the same time as object of the knowledge and as decision-making tool. I postulate, that in front of the diversity of the social expectations and in front of the multiplicity of the objectives to be seized by the decision-makers, it is important to be able to refer to a frame integrator of reflection and action. The landscape constitutes for me this frame. In this perspective, it is envisaged as a tool of mediation capable of bringing a new "socio-territorial contract". The hypothesis of the landscape mediation thus constitutes the horizon of my contribution, which presents the methodological foundations of an approach which, applied to the case of the river landscapes of the Sèvre niortaise, is leaned on the construction and the sharing of an historical knowledge

Full textThe letter-writer Paul Volz (1473/1474-1544) holds an important place within the correspondence of the humanist of Selestat Beatus Rhennaus (1485-1547), with twenty-two letters preserved, during twenty years. This humanist, native of Offenbourg, was monk of the Benedictine abbey of Schuttern. After studies at the University of Tübingen, he was elected abbot of Honcourt (Hugshofen), in the Val de Villé in Alsace, in 1512. Three years later, he met Erasme and Beatus Rhenanus, which lived then in Basle. Volz took an active share, in these years, at the literary society of Sélestat. With the religious background, the Reform of Luther, left Wittenberg in 1517, was established more and more in Alsace. Driven out of his abbey by the Peasants war in 1525, the abbot Volz became established in Strasbourg, become Protestant, and, in 1528, was made evangelical preacher. He lived in Strasbourg until the end of his life (June 1544). His last years were marked with the stamp of the various religious confusions which shook the upper Rhine. Important scholar in addition, he devoted himself to his liking for the local history, toponymy, theology and the history of Eglise. Witnesses of an active friendship during more than twenty years, the letters from Volz to Rhenanus allow us to refine knowledge of humanism in Alsace and cover a crucial period for the history of Alsace and the universal history, from the beginnings of Reform to Trente council. This work offers a critical edition of these letters written in Latin, a French translation of each one of them and a comment of the whole corpus

Full textThe region of the moyenne Durance, a great zone of transition between the Mediterranean land and the alpine zone, is a region which is relatively badly characterised for the roman period in relation to trade, despite a network of important communication links (pass of via domitia) and a dense river network (the Durance). The starting point of this work was the detailed study of the secondary agglomeration of the Bourget at L'Escale (04) thus the installation of the banks as close as possible to the Durance, explained most probably by it's function as a harbour. The ceramic furniture found on this site, which covers the end of the 1st century up to the beginning of the 5th century, forms a basic idea of the materials used during this period. This collection was also increased largely by the study of many other collections from different sites and established productions in the region which also interest us. This work allows the understanding of the make-up and evolution of the usage of the dresser in haute Provence for this period, and to show evidence for the relationships and correspondences maintained by this region and the surrounding regions

Full textIn fractured media, the factors that make evolve a stable fractured media towards a landslide highlight the water effect as an aggravating and a triggering factor of slope instabilities. Long term water effect on stability is studied from spring water chemistry, which gives data about the weathering state in the slope (aggravating factor of the instability) and about infiltration event in the massif (triggering factor). Thus, hydrochemistry enables to propose a conceptual model of flow in unstable slope. A multi scale approach, in two alpine valleys, of relations between the flows and the instability structures highlights the draining role of these structures. Slopes comparison enables to discuss the long term evolution of the effect between water seepages and slope destabilization. Slow movements (toppling, sagging and creep) decompress the upper part of the slope, increase the infiltrated water volumes and create perched aquifers in the decompressed areas. With the destabilization, the water / deformation coupling evolves, from high water pressure effect in low storative fractures to a water high charging effect in the high storative zone, in the upper part of the slope, and can initiate a rupture. Hydrogeochemical equilibrium, observed in stable slope, is modified by large landslide crisis. Thus, sulfate dissolution evolves with active deformation of the slope. This observation enables to demonstrate the possibility to use hydrochemistry to monitor unstable slopes that can record slow deformation in the slope. Key words: Landslide, hydromechanics, hydrochemistry, sulfate, perched aquifer

Full textThis thesis work investigates the notion of territorial anchoring throught the implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) favouring territorial economic development. This work involves field research through the programme “a river, a territory – DEVELOPMENT” initiated by the EDF corporation within the catchment area of the high Dordogne valley. First we conduct a study of the theoretical foundations and socio-economical contexts in which the territorialised CSR co-construction programme processes are involved. Our first objective is to measure stakeholder expectation during the elaboration of these programmes to understand how these expectations materialise into responses given by corporations. Then, we set up three experiments through the development of specific territorial engineering approaches. Our second objective consists in measuring the effective contribution of the EDF programme for territorial public action, identify its limits and new expectations of its actors. Finally, we compared our results against the programme roadmap initiated by EDF by revisiting the CSR and territorial anchoring concepts. Our third objective is to formulate potential evolutions of territorialised CSR programmes. The results show that these programmes are embedded within particular socio-economic contexts. The conducted experimentations show an effective contribution of the EDF territorial development programme around specific support approaches favouring project emergence within territorial governance. Finally, new expectations appear around a reinforcement of the interdependency between corporations and territories. We then propose an evolution of these programmes by joining roadmaps with an approach based on shared and partnership values aimed at favouring this interdependency

Full textFor these last decades, few subjects of the geology of the engineer have drawn the attention of the scientific community as much as those dealing of the natural hazards and more particularly with large-scale gravitational instabilities known as DSGSD (Deep Seated Gravitational Slope Deformation) and DSL (Deep Seated Landslide). Based on few cases study on a natural scale (dating and recent monitoring), short term temporal dynamics remains one of their least studied aspects today. We made the choice of the Cristallère massif as an example. It is located in Upper Aspe Valley of the Pyrenees (Béarn region). The Cristallère DSL was recently identified and analyzed through two dating methods. On the basis of this work, our first approach consists in assessing short term temporal dynamics of these slopes movements on various scales and with various methods of satellites positioning (GPS and GLONASS constellations): multistation positioning RGP (Permanent Geodetic Network in France), statics geodetic with pivot and fast static with pivot. We insist in this work, given the original results obtained, on the interest of the differential GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) with a pivot which must be geographically close to the observations to be carried out in order to ensure sufficient accuracy (cm).Observations and exploitation of drone digital elevation models of the site from aerial surveys at different scales obtained with a “flying wing” are the second approach to this research work. They complete the mapping of the site and demonstrate the existence of a DSGSD based on a high resolution and high precision geomorphometric characterization (cm); they make it possible to refine the delimitation of the Cristallère DSL and its most active area (Pène du Thès) and the Peilhou DSL.In addition to these two complementary approaches, a geological and geophysical survey (structural geology measurements, electrical resistivity tomographies and electromagnetic profiles Very Low Frequency surveys) and an analysis of the available data on the structures present in the unstable slope, such as the large diameter underground water pipe for the hydroelectric plant of Baralet and the former railway tunnel of Peilhou. The combined use of these three approaches confirms that the deep movements of the Cristallère massif are still active with proven seismic forcing: awareness of the potential role taken by the DSGSD is then fundamental. Thus, all the existing structures in the massif or the projects on this site (new constructions or rehabilitation of old structures) have to consider the existence of a slow and gradual change of the entire massif (DSGSD). Moreover, the methodology developed in this work is intended to be general. It also makes possible to monitor and follow, in the short and medium term, all types of ground movement, in particular landslides or rockslides, deep or superficial, slow or fast
