Abstract:
Shaping of the neural plate, one of the most striking events of neurulation, involves rapid craniocaudal extension. In this study, we evaluated the roles of two processes in neural plate extension: neuroepithelial cell rearrangement and cell division. Quail epiblast plugs of constant size were grafted either just rostral to Hensen's node or paranodally and the resulting chimeras were examined at selected times postgrafting. By comparing the size of the original plug, the number of cells it contained and the distribution of cells within it to those same features of the grafts in chimeras, we were able to ascertain that, during transformation of the flat neural plate into the closed neural tube (a period requiring 24 h), the graft undergoes a maximum of 3 rounds of craniocaudal extension (each round of craniocaudal extension was defined as a doubling of graft length, so 3 rounds equaled an 8-fold increase in length). Such extension is accompanied by 2 rounds of cell rearrangement and 2–3 rounds of cell division (cell rearrangement occurred mediolaterally, so each round was defined as a halving of the number of cells in the width of the graft and a doubling of the number of cells in its length; each round of cell division was defined as a doubling of graft cell number). Modeling studies demonstrate that these amounts of cell rearrangement and division are sufficient to approximate the shaping of the neural plate that normally ensues during neurulation, provided that some of the cell division occurs within the longitudinal plane of the neural plate and some within its transverse plane: longitudinal cell division results in craniocaudal extension of the neural plate, whereas transverse cell division results in lateral expansion of the neural plate such as that occurring at its cranial end; cell rearrangement results in craniocaudal extension of the neural plate as well as in its narrowing. In conclusion, our results provide evidence that shaping of the neural plate involves mediolateral cell rearrangement and cell division, with the latter occurring within both the longitudinal and transverse planes of the neural plate.

Abstract:
The problems of high falsesieving rate and low productivity are encountered while sieving shelled buckwheat with traditional round plate sieve. This paper presents a design idea for improving the sieving effect by changing the plate structure. The improved designs consist of a round plate sieve with larger percentage of sieving area than the traditional round plate sieve and a triangular plate sieve with the approximately same geometry as shelled buckwheat grains. Tests are conducted to compare the sieving performance of traditional round plate sieve with the newly designed round plate sieve with different percentage of sieving areas and apertures. Also the traditional round plate sieve is compared with triangle plate sieve with different percentage of sieving areas and apertures. Compared to traditional round plate sieve, the falsesieving rate for newly designed round plate sieve with an aperture isφ4.4mm is reduced by 3.6.A round plate sieve with a percentage of sieving area of59.7%, aperture ofφ4.3mm, is used to sieve the shelled buckwheat of sizeφ4.6~4.7mm.A falsesieving rate of2.3, and non-sieving rate of17.4 are obtained and the sieving effect is found to be the best. For the triangle plate sieve a falsesieving rate of90.2 and non-sieving rate of92.1 are obtained. The triangle plate sieve is found unsuitable for the sieving of shelled buckwheat.

This indicates a more significant effect of uneven mass distribution for such boundary conditions.

To solve the fracture problem of pin round punch when stamping small holes on stainless steel sheets, the retaining structure was analyzed and the structure optimization design of pin round punch was presented. It is shown that during stamping stainless steel sheets, it can prevent pin punch from being fractured effectively by adopting clearance fit between pin punch and retainer plate, precise guide of stripper plate and making working part free in the stripper plate .The optimization results show that the B-type round punch is better than A-type in resisting fracture, and the resistance fracture capability of pin round punch is the best when the transition radius between guiding part and working part is R10mm. Aimed at pin punch damaged in biggish progressive dies, the quick replaced structure is designed, which can replace the pin punch in 3 minutes. So this type of structure can save time very much.

Subprimal cuts were sampled during winter (January and February 2004) and summer (August through October 2004). During each collection period, six representative subprimal cuts (chuck tenders, 0.64-cm trimmed strips, bottom round flat, rough-trimmed brisket, cap-on top rounds, and cap-off insides) were sampled. A total of 600 samples in winter (100 samples per cut) and 599 samples in summer (100 chuck tenders, 100 0.64-cm trimmed strips, 100 bottom round flats, 100 cap-off insides, 97 rough-trimmed briskets, and 102 cap-on top rounds) were collected from five plants in the Midwest, southern Midwest, northern Midwest, and Southeast and swabbed using the sponge swab method. All sponges were analyzed for E. coli O157:H7. In addition, 400 subprimal cuts from four plants were analyzed for aerobic plate counts, total coliforms, and other E. coli strains during each collection period. E. coli O157:H7 was not detected on any of the 1,199 subprimal samples; thus, incidence of E. coli O157:H7 was <0.083%. Seasonal differences between aerobic plate counts and total coliform counts for each of the same cuts were 1.0 log CFU per cut or less. E. coli strains were not detected in 82, 52, 69, and 82% of the chuck tenders, 0.64-cm trimmed strips, bottom round flats, and cap-off insides, respectively.

The problem of magnetically induced eddy current flow in a thin cracked plate is posed and solved for a few special cases. The current density is singular at the tip of a nonconducting crack. The strength of this singularity, denoted M, is found by reducing the eddy current problem to a conduction problem and then using the mathematical methods of fracture mechanics. M is found for a small crack in a current field, a small crack in a round plate with spatially uniform magnetic field, and a half-cracked round plate with spacially uniform magnetic field.

Abstract:
Abstract Human height is a model polygenic trait with thousands of height-related SNPs identified in GWAS to date. An important determinant of height is the proliferation and hypertrophy of growth plate chondrocytes during childhood long bone elongation. Connecting the expression of specific genes that affect skeletal biology to associated variants in GWAS remains a difficult challenge. To connect the genetics of height and growth plate gene expression, we studied the relationship between gene expression in the murine growth plate and common-variant associations from GWAS of height. To obtain gene expression data from the growth plate, we dissected three layers of murine tibial growth plates, extracted RNA from each layer, and measured expression using the Affymetrix GeneChip 430 3.0. For each gene, we derived a specificity score for each growth plate layer, and SNP-level p-values from a published GWAS of height (N~700000) were combined into gene-level p-values using MAGMA. We then used MAGMA to test for association between specificity of expression for each growth plate layer and the GWAS gene level p-values for height. We found that specificity for the round cell layer is significantly associated with height GWAS p-values (p = 8.5x10-9). This association remains when we condition on each of the other cell layers and on membership in a set of genes from OMIM that cause skeletal growth disorders (3.3x10-8 < p < 4.1x10-6). We replicated this result in a RNA-seq dataset of maturing chondrocytes sampled at three time points during development in vitro (days 3, 5, and 10): we found that z-scores for expression in the earliest two days of development are significantly associated with gene-level p-values from height GWAS (pDay3 = 1.2x10-21 and pDay5 = 2.0x10-20) and that this association remains after conditioning on the other timepoints and on the OMIM gene set (3.1x10-20 < pDay3 < 8.3x10-5; 3.7x10-19 < pDay5 < 0.002). We then performed pathway analysis of genes that are both highly specific to the round layer and highly significant in GWAS using Enrichr. Together, our results suggest that genes expressed in early chondrocyte development (the round cell layer) are particularly relevant to the contribution of growth plate-expressed genes to height. This conclusion both sheds light on the regulation of human skeletal growth and also helps prioritize relevant genes implicated from the height GWAS in skeletal biology.

Abstract:
Using the ultrasonic fatigue testing technique, specimens of Q345 bridge steel with two types of shape (round and plate) were performed in ambient air at room temperature with a stress ratio of R=-1. The very long life fatigue property of Q345 was studied and the initiation mechanisms of fatigue cracks were investigated and analyzed with SEM. The results show that the two types of specimen present different S-N curve characteristics in the region of 105-109 cycles. The S-N curve of round specimens shows continuously decreasing tendency, while the S-N curve of plate specimens has a steep decreasing step and an asymptotic horizontal one. The fatigue strength of round specimen is higher than that of plate specimen. Fatigue failure initiates from the surface before 107cycles with high stess level while at internal inclusion in the very long life fatigue regime.

Abstract:
This research aimed to investigate how five different serving shapes of cooked jasmine rice (round, square, triangular, flower, and heart shapes) affected visual hedonic preference and consumer perception (n = 100). Cooked rice was placed on a plate without food, the heart, flower, and triangle serving shapes had higher artistic mean scores than the round shape. And cooked rice placed in the shape of a heart on a plate with food had a higher mean score on ‘liking in shape’ than round or square shapes. The findings of this study could be beneficial to food styling, presenting, and catering in the foodservice industry, resulting in increased sales, particularly in restaurants and hotels. Furthermore, for more successful food marketing and advertising, one can use the shapes of a heart as a serving shape for cooked jasmine rice box labels.

Abstract:
Background. Rhinosinusitis, affecting both maxillary and other sinuses, is a multidisciplinary issue which otolaryngologists, dentists, neurologists and ophthalmologists are constantly dealing with. There is a remarkable diagnostic value of anthropometric indicators of maxillary sinuses of people of different genders, using CT scan images of mature age patients. Purpose – establish a relationship between the shape of the maxillary sinuses and possible contacts of the tooth roots of the maxillary dental arch in healthy mature men and women. Materials and methods. The study was performed based on the results of 102 CBCT with normal maxillary sinuses variations in adults in the frontal and sagittal plane. The examinations were performed on Point 3D Combi 500 cone-beam tomograph. The paper belongs to the «description of case series» category whis is a type of study recognized by evidence based medicine and does not claim statistical significance of the results. Results and discussion. When examining the computer tomograms of men and women in the study group, it has been found out how the shape of the maxillary sinuses (MS) affects the contact of the tooth roots with the cortical plate and the mucous membrane of the maxillary sinuses. Six main shapes of the MS are defined: trapezoidal, square, round, oval, rectangular and triangular. In the frontal plane of CBCT, the most frequent contact with the MS cortical plate is observed in the triangular and rectangular shape of the MS, that is: in the MS rectangular shape it is in contact with the 15th, 25th tooth root in 13 people (56.5% of cases) and in the triangular shape – with the 15th, 25th tooth root in 17 people (56.5% of cases). Analyzing CBCT in the sagittal plane, the most frequent contact with the cortical plate of the left MS is observed in the MS triangular shape, namely – the sinus is in contact with the 25th tooth root in 38 people (59.4% of cases). In the sagittal plane of CBCT, the contact with the tooth roots was rarely observed in the MS square and round shape. In the MS square shape, the 13th and 14th tooth roots do not come into contact with its cortical plate, and, with the mucous membrane, there is no contact of all the roots of the teeth except the 16th, in 1 person only. Conclusions. The results of the study have made it possible to trace a number of patterns of influence of the maxillary sinus shape on the tooth roots contacting it. The contact of the MS cortical plate is most often observed with 16th and 26th tooth roots, while the MS mucous membrane – with 17th and 27th tooth roots of the upper jaw. It was found that in any shape of sinus in the frontal plane, no contact of the 13th, 23rd and 24th tooth roots of the maxillary dental arch with the mucous membrane of the maxillary sinus was detected. In the CBCT frontal plane, it has been found that the most frequent contact with the MS cortical plate is observed in triangular, trapezoidal and rectangular form of the MS, and the rarest one – in oval, square and round form of MS. The study has established that in the sagittal plane of CBCT the most frequent contact with the MS cortical plate is observed in the MS triangular shape, and the rarest – in the round one.

Abstract:
AbstractMost industrial machines use belt transmission for power transfer. These mechanisms often use the round belts of several millimetres in diameter that are made of thermoplastic elastomers, especially polyurethane. Their production process calls for bonding the material, which is often performed by hot plate butt welding. In order to achieve proper design of an automatic welding machine, the authors analysed the hot plate welding process of round belts. This process consists of five phases. It is necessary to recognize all the physical phenomena that occur during welding, especially those connected with thermomechanical properties of material. This knowledge is necessary to determine the temperature distribution during each step of the process. The paper presents a standard welding cycle together with an explanation of the physical phenomena in each phase. An analysis of these fundamentals will be used to derivate the function of temperature distribution during all process phases. In addition, some assumptions for calculation of temperature distribution and some fundamental physic correlations were presented.

Abstract:
We report on the results of a series of large-scale computer-based preference tests (conducted at The Science Museum in London and online) that evaluated the widely-held belief that food should be plated in odd rather than even numbers of elements in order to maximize the visual appeal of a dish. Participants were presented with pairs of plates of food showing odd versus even number of seared scallops (3 vs. 4; 1–6 in Experiment 7), arranged in a line, as a polygon or randomly, on either a round or square white plate. No consistent evidence for a preference for odd or even numbers of food items was found, thus questioning the oft-made assertion that odd number of items on a plate looks better than an even number. The implications of these results are discussed.

Abstract:
The assumed deflection shapes used in the approximate methods such as in the Galerkin’s method were normally formulated by inspection and sometimes by trial and error, until recently, when a systematic method of constructing such a function in the form of Characteristic Orthogonal Polynomial (COPs) was developed by Bhat in 1985. In the vibrational analyses of orthotropic rectangular plates with different boundary conditions, the study used the characteristic orthogonal polynomial theory to obtain satisfactory approximate shape functions for these plates. These functions were applied to Galerkin indirect varational method to obtain new set of fundamental natural frequencies for these plates. The results were reasonable when compared with those in the previous work. All round simply supported thin rectangular plate (SSSS), rectangular clamped plated (CCCC) and rectangular plate with one edge clamped and all others edges simply supported (CSSS) gave 5.172, 9.429 and 6.202 natural frequencies in rad /sec respectively at 0.05%, 0.0% and 22.93% difference with the previous[3] results5.170rad/sec, 9.429rad/sec and 8.048rad/sec for SSSS, CCCC and CSSS. For others like: rectangular plate with one edge simply supported and all other edges clamped (CCSC), rectangular plate simply supported at two opposite sides and clamped at the others (CSCS) and rectangular plate clamped at two adjacent sides and simply supported at the others (CCSS) with no available results, their natural frequencies obtained are 8.041rad/sec, 6.272rad/sec and 7.106rad/sec respectively. http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/njt.v36i1.8

Abstract:
A new closed solution is constructed for the axisymmetric dynamic problem of the classical (CTE) theory of thermoelasticity for a rigidly fixed circular isotropic plate in the case of a temperature change on its face surfaces (boundary conditions of the first kind). The mathematical formulation of the problem under consideration includes linear equations of thermal conductivity and equilibrium in a spatial setting, assuming that their inertial elastic characteristics can be neglected in the structures under study. In constructing a general solution of related non-self-conjugate equations, we use the mathematical apparatus of separation of variables in the form of finite integral transformations i.e. Hankel along the radial coordinate and biorthogonal transformation (FIT) with respect to the axial variable. At each stage of the investigation, a procedure is performed to reduce the boundary conditions to a form that allows the corresponding transformation to be applied. A particular feature of this solution is the application of a FIT based on a multicomponent relation of the eigenvector functions of two homogeneous boundary value problems. An important point in the procedure of the structural algorithm is the separation of the adjoint operator, without which it is impossible to solve non-self-adjoint linear problems of mathematical physics. This transformation is the most effective method for studying similar boundary value problems. The calculated design relationships make it possible to determine the stress-strain state and the character of the distribution of the temperature field in a rigidly fixed circular isotropic plate for an arbitrary external temperature effect with respect to time. Numerical analysis of the strength characteristics of the concrete structure shows that during the period of the unsteady load the maximum values of mechanical stresses are observed. Later, at a constant temperature regime, as a result of heating the entire plate, the displacements increase and the stresses fall.
