Abstract:
On the evening of April 7, 2015, following a runoff election in which he received 56 percent of the votes cast, Rahm Emanuel won a second term as mayor of Chicago. The contest was much closer than many had expected, particularly as Emanuel’s predecessor, Richard M. Daley, routinely received around 70 percent support (on the first ballot) when achieving reelection. Yet because Emanuel had failed to get more than 50 percent of the vote in the first-round mayoral ballot on February 24, he was forced into the runoff against his second-place challenger, Cook County commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia....

Abstract:
Because God is not merely a prescriptive entity but, by virtue of his omnipresence, also a place, Milton implies that knowledge, vitality, and meaningful action depend upon one’s sense of location. For philosophy, one’s understanding (one’s language) determines one’s world; for the religious poet it is the other way round: what one experiences as one’s location, shapes what one knows. A contrast is drawn between the philosopher who begins by denouncing the perceived world, returning to it after a stage of withdrawal into contemplation, and the religious poet who begins with perception of the right kind. Differences between philosophy and religion over the connection between meaningful existence and living an examined life are traced.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the deepening of religious and ethnic cleavages in the 2010s, attempting to evaluate their impact on the ongoing transitional process. It investigates the new round of inter-ethnic peace parleys which President Thein Sein’s administration has embarked on since 2011. It then looks at religious and moral values, alongside the place and influence of “outsiders” in Myanmar’s society. These are themes which have recently resurfaced in public debate, as well as punctual and localized inter-communal violence. A handful of radical Buddhist associations have begun to regain a voice in the public space and have fostered debate on the involvement of the state in religious affairs. Thus monastic organizations have re-emerged as powerful actors seeking to shape public values and influence policymakers within the walls of the new parliament.

Abstract:
This chapter starts by analysing why Ethiopia decided to integrate some of its troops into AMISOM in January 2014. It then summarizes the four major expansion and consolidation operations that AMISOM undertook over the next two years, namely, operations Eagle, Indian Ocean, Ocean Build, and Juba Corridor. The third section then discusses the subsequent round of mandate revisions and review process that took place in light of these operations. A major consequence of these operations was that AMISOM acquired more territory and settlements to help administer. The fourth section therefore discusses some of the main problems caused by this newly expanded force structure and the major attempts by al-Shabaab to overrun AMISOM bases. Finally, the chapter assesses the most fundamental and perennial problem facing AMISOM, namely, the lack of a political settlement and national reconciliation among Somalia’s governing elites.

Wolfinger, Kay, ed. Mystisches Schwabing. Ergon – ein Verlag in der Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5771/9783956506550.

Full text
Abstract:
Who were the participants in the ‘Cosmic Round’ that made Schwabing a magical place around 1900? And what can the ‘Cosmics’ still tell us today? The contributions in this conference volume address these questions. Their aim is to revive research on the mystical tendencies of Munich's literary topography at the turn of the century. The topics of inquiry include Karl Wolfskehl‘s poems and Stefan George’s social circle, Ludwig Derleth's secret writing system, Ludwig Klages’ themes and the reflections on group dispositives of the Munich bohemian world. The contexts of the mystical Schwabing, where the Kosmik was born, where Stefan George met the god Maximin, Albert von Schrenck-Notzing carried out his séance experiments and the Countess von Reventlow received her guests, are invocations of a literarily and artistically intertwined occultism. This anthology sets out to reevaluate this field, not least to encourage further academic interest. Abstract:
This book explores musicalizations of Arthurian legend as filtered through specific tellings by Mark Twain, T. H. White, and Monty Python. For centuries, Arthurian legend with its tales of Camelot, romance, and chivalry has captured imaginations throughout Europe and the Americas. In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, musical versions of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table have abounded in the United States, shaping the legend for American audiences through song. The ever-shifting, age-old tale of King Arthur and his world is one which thrives on adaptation for its survival. New generations tell the story in their own ways, updating or enhancing the relevance for a fresh audience. Taking a case-study approach, this work foregrounds the role of music in selected Arthurian adaptations, examining six stage and film musicals. It considers how musical versions in twentieth- and twenty-first-century popular culture interpret the legend of King Arthur, contending that music guides the audience to understand this well-known tale and its characters in new and unexpected ways. All of the productions considered include an overtly modern perspective on the legend, intruding and even commenting on the tale of King Arthur. Shifting from an idealistic utopia to a silly place, the myriad notions of Camelot offer a look at the importance of myth in American popular culture.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Despite India’s three decades of economic liberalization, access to quality education, well-paying jobs, and high standards of living align with prior class and caste advantages, leaving many poor and working-class people stuck in place and obligated to seek handouts from the rich. The study draws on ten years of ethnographic fieldwork at three private golf clubs in Bangalore, India’s Silicon Valley, to explore the ties of dependence wealthy club members generate with the poor lower-caste golf caddies who carry their bags, and in a manner that reproduces their positions of privilege and authority. The caddies are not employees, and yet neither do they have complete control over their rates and schedules. Making $3–5 for a five- or six-hour round, caddies deploy acts servility and deference to yield additional money for healthcare, children’s school fees, and other household expenses. While a rare few caddies win sufficient support to put them and their families on a path of social mobility, most struggle to make ends meet, living in less-than-secure housing, going without food in some cases, and sending their children to low-quality schools that all but guarantee they will take up similar work as their fathers. The necessity but ultimate limitation of such relationships between the rich and poor underscores the failure of India’s development strategy, which favors private over public interests, and has yet to establish well-funded healthcare, education, and basic social services that would improve chances of social mobility and independence among the poor.

Lessons from Malawi’s Fresh Presidential Elections of 23 June 2020. International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance and the Electoral Commissions Forum of SADC countries, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.31752/idea.2020.59.

Full text
Abstract:
On 3 February 2020, the High Court of Malawi sitting on constitutional matters nullified the presidential election that was held on 21 May 2019. That decision was upheld by the Supreme Court of Appeal on 8 May 2020. Various reforms were ordered by the courts and legislated by Parliament, most notably a change in the electoral system, from a simple majoritarian, or first-past-the-post (FPTP), system to a two-round system where the winner must receive over 50 per cent of the votes. A fresh presidential election was held on 23 June 2020 under the supervision of a new commission, and Malawi made history in Africa on 27 June when the opposition candidate was announced victorious in the fresh presidential election. The repeat election was held in a largely peaceful environment, and the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) did not receive any complaints following the announcement of the result. Given the remarkable events that took place in Malawi, the Executive Committee of the Electoral Commissions Forum of SADC countries (ECF-SADC) recommended that the MEC should be given the opportunity to share its experience regarding the fresh presidential election of 23 June 2020 with other member commissions. The ECF-SADC in collaboration with the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) organized a webinar on 31 August 2020 to strengthen peer review among electoral management bodies (EMBs) in the region of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The webinar provided a platform for peer-learning concerning both the conduct of the fresh presidential election in Malawi and emerging regional trends in electoral justice.
