Full textThe vehicle electrification changes the operating conditions of the gearbox Rolling-Element Bearings (REBs) requiring the development of new material. This application is characterized by a contaminated lubrication. This experimental and theoretical study aims to understand the failure mechanism and to identify the parameters that improve the material performance. It is carried out on REBs, made of a martensitic steel, which are indented by hard particles before endurance. Then, the REBs are characterized based on a quantitative characterization of the dents and their damage, and on a multi-scale characterization of the microstructural evolutions. It is shown that the finishing operations generate a thin plastically affected layer at the surface which does not further evolve neither after the indentation nor after RCF, except below the dent shoulder. Hence, the dent shoulder plays a key role in the damage initiation. The shoulder gradually deforms and/or wears throughout the test, its surface aspect changes, and the run-in area increases. The trailing shoulder has a different surface aspect compared with the leading shoulder which might be due to further plastic deformation and could explain the preferential crack location. The RCF cycles generate an advanced plasticity beneath the shoulder. With the accumulation of cycles, a crack initiates, certainly in an area with a microstructural defect, such as at the primary carbide/matrix interface. The crack propagation is not immediate and is based on two distinct processes characterized by two different fracture surfaces. The crack first propagates in a layer with a very fine microstructure, suggesting a slow initial propagation speed. As it propagates, it further modifies the microstructure in the region above the crack due to deformation and shear between the crack faces. The probability that a dent cracks is correlated with the test duration, the pressure and the dent hole volume, but not to the slope. The influence of the hole volume could be explained by a higher volume of material deformed from the dent hole towards its shoulder

Full textThis phD dissertation deals with the detection and diagnosis of incipient faults in engineering and industrial systems by non-parametric statistical approaches. An incipient fault is supposed to provoke an abnormal change in the measurements of the system variables. However, this change is imperceptible and also unpredictable due to the large signal-to-fault ratio and the low fault-to-noise ratio characterizing the incipient fault. The detection and identification of a global change require a ’global’ approach that takes into account the total faults signature. In this context, the Kullback-Leibler divergence is considered to be a ’global’ fault indicator, which is recommended sensitive to abnormal small variations hidden in noise. A ’global’ spectral analysis approach is also proposed for the diagnosis of faults with a frequency signature. The ’global’ statistical approach is proved on two application studies. The first one concerns the detection and characterization of minor cracks in conductive structures. The second application concerns the diagnosis of bearing faults in electrical rotating machines. In addition, the fault estimation problem is addressed in this work. A theoretical study is conducted to obtain an analytical model of the KL divergence, from which an estimate of the amplitude of the incipient fault is derived
