Full textThe planetary roller screw (PRS) mechanism is used in the aeronautics industry for electro-mechanical actuators application. It transforms a rotational movement into a translation movement, and it is designed for heavy loads. The main components are made of martensitic stainless steels, and lubricated with grease. Like most usual rolling mechanisms, smearing and jamming can occur before the theoretical fatigue lifetime, especially in poor lubrication conditions. The actuated load is carried by small contacts between the threads of the screw, the rollers and the nut. The static single contact can be described as an ellipsoid on flat contact with high contact pressure (3-4 GPa). The motion consists of rolling with spin associated with side slip (up to 10 %). The aim of this PhD work is to investigate the wear behavior for different operating and design parameters of PRS such as load, speed, slip ratio, lubrication and material structure, in order to improve behavior and lifetime of PRS. The contact is experimentally simulated by a free rolling roller loaded on a rotating disk. A specific tribometer is used to create a contact with a side slip component, i.e. perpendicular to the rolling direction. The roller rolling speed and the tangential force generated by the slip ratio are measured. Also, an optical device is set on the tribometer to make a film of the evolution of the track outside of the contact. Steel on steel wear behavior is first presented. Then, several aspects of the greased lubricated contact are studied such as the feeding mechanisms related to the specific kinematics, and susceptibility to smearing in relation with tests input parameters. The feeding mechanisms are mapped as a function of input parameters (contact pressure, rolling speed, and sliding ratio). The wear behavior of hard carbon-based coatings with and without grease is also investigated. It shows good performance for the roller-screw application. The coating lifetime is governed by a three-body wear mechanism, but the experiments also reveal a progressive cracking in the rolling direction, i.e. perpendicular to the sliding direction. Lastly, a wear mode map is proposed to illustrate the competition between the two damage modes depending on the tests input parameters. The analysis of experimental results allows us to propose ways to improve the design and the selection of materials in order to increase the behavior and the durability of PRS

Full textThe tapered roller bearings used in aircraft wheels are subject to considerable stress during the phases when the aircraft is in contact with the ground. Their design and integration into the wheel therefore require special attention. In particular, this thesis explores the risks associated with the rotation of the outer ring of a tapered roller bearing in its housing when subjected to transient thermal loading from the brake. These bearings are mounted with an interference fit in the housing. In addition, under severe mechanical loads such as an aircraft cornering on the taxiway, the internal forces of the bearing can generate a high friction torque. Thus, under a specific thermal load and due to the different coefficients of thermal expansion between the outer ring and the housing, a loss of clamping can occur and lead to relative rotation between the outer ring and the hub of the wheel in which the bearing is mounted. This phenomenon of slippage degrades the performance of the bearing and can lead to damage. A semi-analytical approach based on geometric equations is applied to a bearing with rigid rings to determine the contact forces between the rollers and the raceways. These forces are the data needed to evaluate the running torque of the bearing. The torque is estimated using empirical models proposed in the literature and based on EHL theory. The calculation code developed in this way can also be used to predict the angular distribution of internal forces (load zone), the Hertz contact pressure and the displacements of each of the bearing components under multiaxial loading. A transient thermomechanical model is then used to study the evolution of the clamping torque between the ring and the hub. The results of these models are compared with the literature or with results obtained using finite elements method. Finally, the calculation code for bearings with rigid rings is modified to integrate the deformations of the outer ring in order to assess the impact of these deformations on the friction torque of the bearing. These models are applied to two wheels from different aircraft

Full textThe lifespan of a gear box is partly related to the operation of the rolling bearing. The lubrication of the bearings plays an essential part, it makes it possible to maintain balance thermal and to separate the interfaces in contact. This study rests on the theoretical modeling of the operation of a tapered roller bearing, and on experimental test. It brings a predictive comprehension of the mechanical behavior on the one hand, with the calculation of the stiffness of the bearing, and energetics on the other hand, by carrying out the assessment of the powers dissipated within a bearing for load and kinematic met in the gear boxes. The model of calculation takes into account the influence of the stiffness of the housing and the correction of profile of the rings and the rollers for obtaining the axial stiffness. The quasi-static analysis takes into account the rheological behavior visco - nonlinear of the lubricant for the calculation of the forces and the moments of friction acting on surfaces of the rollers and the cage. This modeling provides the slip's rate of the cage and the real kinematics of the rollers. A good correlation is obtained with the experimental results, for the friction torque of the bearing. This work constitutes a first stage to predict the optimal quantity of lubricant to bring to the tapered roller bearing

Full textRolling Element Bearing (REB) is an essential component in mechanical transmission to reduce friction between rotating parts. Now, with the development of electrical motor in mechanical industry, REBs may work at very high rotation speed. It leads to an increase of REB power losses and temperatures. Theses power losses are strongly coupled with the REB thermal behaviour. The oil temperature has a significant impact on the kinematic viscosity which in turn affects the REB power losses. Based on thermal network approach, an intermediate model is developed in this study. This new model allows obtaining lumped information (temperature of rings) with a minimum of input data (REB external geometry and operating condition only) and by using global power loss models. This intermediate model is developed for angular contact ball bearing and deep groove ball bearing under oil jet lubrication for high speed application. Experimental data are required to validate this new approach. That why, a modular test rig is designed to obtain information on the REB thermomechanical behaviour. The new test rig developed in this study is dedicated to a wide range of REB dimensions and for different operating conditions. For the first test, a deep groove ball bearing under oil jet lubrication is studied for high speed application ((N.dm) product is higher than one million.)
