Full textFrom the American counter culture to contemporary ecofeminist perspectives, this thesis exposes Theodore Roszak’s works and career while showing the ways in which his ecopsychological proposition is founded in the feminist, ecological, and anticapitalist premises forged during the 1960s in the United States. This dissertation also brings to the attention of the scientific community an innovating and conceptual input which consists in mapping ecofeminist emancipatory trajectories in fiction via the four topoi here defined: the hearth, the edges, the forest and the glade. This spatialization of the concrete and metaphorical places that organize ecofeminist processes of desalienation from patriarcal and neoliberal paradigms is presented via a corpus of sevent female authors from the United States. This thesis eventually defends the idea that the notions of « ecofeminist emancipatory trajectory » and of « the rape of the earth » are constitutive of an ecofeminist approach to literature and cultural studies

ABSTRACT Marimba Rossa is a three-movement concert piece for marimba and symphony orchestra. The 14-minute piece is written in the spirit of the Italian Baroque concertos of Antonio Vivaldi (the "Red Priest" for whom the piece is named), using a harmonic and rhythm language that is heavily influenced by the concert and pop music of the late twentieth-century. Marimba Rossa was composed with the concept of Ars Combinatoria in mind. First espoused by George Rochberg in 1973, Ars Combinatoria is concert music that uses musical gestures drawn from any musical tradition. The accompanying monograph provides a detailed history of the modern concert marimba and an account of the evolution of its concert and popular music repertoire. Specific information about the marimba's origins in Asia, its place in the Bible, the development of the European strohfiedel xylophone, the refinement of the instrument in America, and a discussion of the Guatemalan, Mexican, and Japanese

Full textPowdery mildew of the rose tree induces heavy economic consequences. This disease is due to an external fungus Sphaerotheca pannosa var. Rosae that develops on the host without resulting in his death. This work of thesis points out a study in four steps of the relations host-parasite : 1- the evaluation of the expression of the symptoms of powdery mildew, in two collections, one of botanical species and another of modern rose trees. This approach allowed to identify resistant genotypes. 2- a program of crossings to evaluate the transmission of resistance and abilities for combination. The observation of the segregations, on the progenies from a diallele crossing plan between diploid species, confirmed that the character of resistance was controlled by several genes. The process for introgression of resistance, via a dihaploïd (2x) of modern rose tree (4x) cross with R. Wichuraïana (2x) followed with serial brother-sister crossings revealed as essential to fix the character. 3- the search for tools of sifting. This one led to a biological test of evaluation of resistance to powdery mildew and to methods for the isolation of the inoculum and following for the obtainment of mono-conidial isolates. 4- the study of the installation of the foliar cuticle and its efficiency according to : genotype, age of the organ and environmental conditions. A process was established to modulate the installation of the cuticle on plantlets resulting from in vitro. The cuticular evapotranspiration of resistant genotypes was measured lower than that of sensitive. At last, high calcium level in the nutrition of rose tree would activate the biosynthesis of the cuticle. In conclusion, the whole of these results contributes to the knowledge of the disease and to the definition of a strategy for the selection of the character of Resistance to powdery mildew

The contributions of John Calhoun Deagan, Ulysses G. Leedy, George Hamilton Green, Harry Breuer, Clair Omar Musser, and others are chronicled. Other topics include: the use of the xylophone in the symphony orchestra; polytonality; modal writing; and the folk music of Calabria, Italy. The monograph also describes the juxtaposition of the marimba and various instrumental consorts and the metaphoric class struggle these pairings represent in Marimba Rossa.
