Full textEssential oils of citronella (Cymbopogon citratus), geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) and vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides) are used worldwide as topical repellent against the main vectors (mosquitoes, ticks) of human infectious diseases (Malaria, chikungunya, …). Skin treatment with these natural products, initially to avoid contact with the vector had not yet been considered as a way to disrupt the early stages of infection when the repelling action fails. To check this hypothesis, a structured framework has been performed for the chemical and biological re-evaluation of the three essential oils. The latter was tested against Ross River virus (alphavirus) that belongs to the same family of Chikungunya virus. Analysis of essential oils using a high-resolution technique (GC × GC / TOF-MS) resulted in a more accurate chemotypical profile of the local production. The use of specific markers (molecular clones of the virus, Saclay CEA) allowed to establish the inhibition of viral replication depending of the conditions of geranium and citronella essential oils application. These results suggest the great interest of an essential oil topical repellent in the early stages of a vector infection. The comparative study established the high value of geranium essential oil and gave future direction to the discovery of new anti-infectious solutions from monoterpenes-rich natural complexes

Costa, Luis Ricardo Fernandes da. "EstruturaÃÃo geoambiental e susceptibilidade à desertificaÃÃo na sub-bacia hidrogrÃfica do Riacho Santa Rosa - CearÃ." Universidade Federal do CearÃ, 2014. http://www.teses.ufc.br/tde_busca/arquivo.php?codArquivo=12780.
The advance of desertification and land degradation has manifested increasingly in the Brazilian semiarid region, often caused by the indiscriminate use of natural resources, is to maintain the current production system, or even the lack of information in the management of this resource. The research examined the sub-basin of the creek Santa Rock, located in the lower course of the river and Banabuià with a total area of 675 km Â. As a general objective has been the analysis of the sub-basin environmental systems in diagnostic character, in order to establish a basis for future interventions. The design used for the discussion was based on integrated studies, with emphasis on the systemic analysis of the environment. From the methodological point of view the work was divided into six stages: analysis of publications, cartographic and satellite images; production of maps to help in the field; fieldwork for verification of data; correctness and adequacy of cartographic material produced for the research context and questionnaires. From the methodology used five environmental systems were defined: riverine plain area and seasonal flooding; interior trays with colluvial - eluvial covers detrital; pediplanados hinterlands of New Street; hinterlands moderately dissected Jaguaretama and residual inselbergs and ridges. It was noticed that the use of natural resources is not uniform throughout the sub-basin, according to the potentialities of each environmental system. Environmental systems characterized by hinterland are still the most vulnerable areas from the point of view geoenvironmental, further areas traditionally used for local livelihoods. Even with disappointing scenarios was also found an improvement of the conditions of various communities as a result of better access to resources and economic dynamism. Despite this positive variable, these areas are still neglected and deprived of support by the local government.

From the study of narratives of Brazilian writer João Guimarães Rosa, we attempted to identify, catalog and describe some elements that they turn on their literary discourse. Readings were taken on a considerable part of the author's work, which originated assertions, assumptions and relationships observed in this study. By analyzing rosianos statements, prioritized five highlight relevant essential discursive themes in his speech, which were divided and organized into five themes: "love, night, religion, people and nature." The authors chosen as analytical support to address the love were the Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle, thinkers Erich Fromm, Benedito Nunes, Arthur Schopenhauer, André Comte- Sponville Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung, the sociologist Zygmunt Bauman and semiotician Algirdas Greimas. The authors required as analytical support to treat religiosity were the philosopher St. Augustine, the Essayist Elisa Guimarães and two experts in iconography, Jacopo Varazze and Nilza Botelho Megale. The authors adopted as analytical support for crushing the night were the folklorist Luís da Câmara Cascudo, the demonologist Eliphas Lévi and literary critic Massaud Moisés. The authors listed as analytical support to subsidize the axis on the speech of the people were the socio- linguist Dino Preti, sociologist Roger Bastide, the philosopher Jean - Jacques Rousseau, the thinker Antonio Candido, the anthropologist Claude Lévi - Strauss and again the folklorist Luís da Câmara Cascudo. The authors used as analytical support to embrace nature were Heraclitus of Ephesus and Empedocles of Agrigento philosophers and thinkers Humberto Maturana, Francisco Varela, Fritjof Capra and Gaston Bachelard.

Full textThis thesis proposes the hypothesis that Brazilian writer João Guimarães Rosa’s The Third Bank of the River and Other Stories [Primeiras estórias, 1962; English translation published in 1968] is the author’s arrival point after a strenuous path toward aesthetic expression. Such achievement may be partially explained by the support provided by the book’s epigraphic experience, and also by the use of characters who apparently have a secondary role but eventually spring to the narrative foreground as protagonists. The paratextual elements could be described as “narrative poems”, similar to the ones Rosa wrote for Magma [collected poetry, 1936], as well as “parallel essays”, in which Rosa experiments with the genre of the very short narrative, through the excision and framing of texts written by others or the creation of epigraphs signed by pseudonyms. Not all texts have epigraphs, in order to highlight the correspondence between the paratext, the protagonist and the theme. The narratives where the protagonists are children (who are considered as paradigmatic characters in that they allow us to better understand how families are configured) are placed at the beginning of the section without epigraphs. At the same time, both the epigraphs and the characters in the stories lead us to recognize the presence of an implied author, which is a confirmation of Rosa’s aesthetic choices, especially concerning his preference for the genre of the short narrative.
