Declines and losses of amphibian populations are a global problem involving a complexity of interacting causes. Regardless of the fact that amphibians in Africa are among those predicted to be hit the hardest by anthropogenic global change, many species remain poorly studied. Capensibufo rosei, Rose's Mountain Toad, is a restricted range species that survives in a few small, isolated montane populations in the extreme south-western Cape of South Africa. A recent study of the genus revealed that C. rosei may in fact comprise several cryptic species, with a distinctive lineage potentially being confined to the Cape Peninsula. I test the hypothesis that breeding sites on the Peninsula form a single genetic lineage, but are distinct at a population level due to limited dispersal abilities and little if any gene flow.

Capensibufo rosei, a critically endangered bufonid found only within Table Mountain National Park, has shown a silent decline over recent decades, despite being found within a protected area with apparently pristine habitat. I estimated the first survival and recruitment rates for the species, using Capture-Mark-Recapture (CMR) methods, over a 7-year period, in order to identify demographic trends over time. I also used covariate models to test whether any observed trends in these demographic parameters were significantly related to variation in rainfall or drought-stress. I found some evidence for an extreme rainfall-induced life-history plasticity, with both survival and recruitment rates covarying closely with rainfall parameters. Although recruitment rate showed a positive relationship with rainfall, the relationship between survival rate and rainfall, specifically during the start of breeding, was negative, with breeding season rainfall explaining 94% of the variability in survival rate over time. I also found evidence to suggest that higher adult survival during poorer breeding rainfall years may be a natural population buffering mechanism to a highly variable microclimate, and that variable rainfall during the start of the breeding season may elicit a variable response in breeding investment by adults. Finally, I found evidence to suggest that the population is small, range-restricted and highly unstable, and that disturbances at the breeding site during good breeding years may cause the population to crash.

Abstract:
Protocols for the successful micropropagation of 'Queen Elizabeth' ('Q.E.') and 'Dick Koster' ('D.K.') roses were established, yielding a seven-ten fold multiplication rate per month. The effects of mechanically induced stress (MIS) (shaking stress) were evaluated on early establishment of greenhouse-grown 'Q.E.' and 'D.K.' rose cuttings and the ex vitro survival and hardiness of micropropagated 'Q.E.' plantlets. Shaking 'Q.E.' rose cuttings at 200 rpm for 30 min daily for 4 weeks during the rooting stage increased root length, dry weight and the root:shoot dry weight ratio. Similar shaking of 'D.K.' rose at 200 rpm for 15 min increased shoot fresh and dry weight and root length and dry weight. Prior to ex vitro acclimatization, plantlets shaken at 150 rpm for 15 min had reduced leaf dry weights. Those shaken at 200 rpm for 15 min had lower specific root water content but greater percent root dry matter. MIS was not directly implicated in improving ex vitro survival and hardiness of 'Q.E.' rose. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the implications of selfhood in three retellings of the "Beauty and the Beast" story-Robin McKinley's Beauty and Rose Daughter, and Donna Jo Napoli's Beast-analyzing those factors that affected each protagonist's understanding of the self, how these challenged or aided them in their journey towards self-actualization, and how a sense of personal gratification represented the true reward at the end of the ordeal. My analysis was informed by the Jungian concept of the Self as the goal of individuation, and Joseph Campbell's model of the hero's journey. As such, I found that these retellings illustrated the hero's journey as a representation of the process of individuation and the benefits to be gained by reaching this state of wholeness.

Abstract:
The modern rose variety ‘Jardin de Granville’, possesses proven activities against skin cell inflammatory and oxidant mechanisms and is devoted to cosmetic applications. The main goal of this study was to establish the molecular fingerprint of the different organs of ‘Jardin de Granville’. In this way, a standardized process for plant harvesting and sample extraction was developed giving access to the most exhaustive molecular fingerprint possible of the different organs. Several complementary analytical methods were implemented through HPTLC, HPLC-DAD-ELSD and UHPLC-HRMS, enabling to achieve the chromatographic fingerprint of the different organs and to identify the main constituents. These methods were selected to have increasing specificity and accuracy to bring progressive information on the molecule structure. Thus, more than 120 compounds were characterized in the different extracts. The second objective consisted in identifying specific phytochemical markers of the variety by comparing its fingerprint to those obtained from its two rose plant parents. In this way, two approaches were developed. The first one involves statistical analysis like PCA, HAC and ANOVA and allows comparing the whole sample chromatograms. The second approach performs extract chromatogram subtractions two by two and gives more detailed information. Both comparative methods led to the identification of the differential compounds existing between the different organ types which could be used to valuate some plant parts in particular. Some ‘Jardin de Granville’ specific markers were highlighted showing the method capacity to distinguish very close rose varieties, by comparing their molecular content

Ferrand, Nathalie. Thesis, Lyon 2, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013LYO20091.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis on the story of Lyon’s roses’ breeders between 1820 and 1939 focuses on several issues: the individual and the family farm, the commercial activity and consumers’ tastes, and the collective action of a profession which gradually stands apart from the horticultural world. From the apparition of first specializations around 1820 to the decline of the activity related to roses during the interwar, the periodization highlights the golden age of French roses’ culture materialized, among others, by the formation of professional lines throughout the nineteenth century. This study proposes to reconstruct various aspects, historical, entrepreneurial, socio-economic, technical or cultural of the activity and provides explanatory material in order to understand the work of breeders: they belong to the excellence of the horticultural world and are, as such, subject to the history of elites – we are talking here of professional elites: With the archives of companies – account books, shipping records, professional correspondence – the thesis updates the developments of the roses’ market and shows how a marginal activity, ignored by official statistics, develops through an extensive sales network. In order to do so, the overview of buyers and the examination of an elitist and fashionable clients permits to decrypts the consumption of an epoch and the emergence of new aesthetic codes articulated around a product that refers to cultural practices and social and identity constructions. The exploitation of quantified data about the market’s structuration, the nominal identification of clients and the periodization of roses’ trends, illustrated by a statistical analysis of the preferences of buyers, give to this thesis a new and original approach. The analysis of economic and social logics that have influenced the success and the decline of the roses’ sector show the functioning of a traditional industry, its quantitative and qualitative evolution and the organization of a large-scale market, supported by a know-how which guarantees the quality of the product and the choice of the buyer. Some of those micro-companies consolidate their position by choosing a dynamic policy using and combining both sales’ mechanisms and creative talents, taking relatively modern business practices in response to a gradual increase and diversification of commercial transactions. Concerning the matching of supply and demand, it shows a broadening of the customer, which is related to the economic and cultural changes brought about by the expansion of leisure in most social groups who see the flowers ’culture as a relaxing activity and a way to beautify the living environment. Throughout the reflexion, new floral preferences established have been declined; around aesthetic considerations which are not unrelated with the development of ornamental staging which landscape architects strive to reproduce. Isn’t the novelty of a colour a preeminent element determining the success of a variety? In this sense, the enthusiasm for the yellow rose lets us know about codes of elegance that became widespread in the gardens. The colorimetry is therefore a privileged observatory of sensibilities and aesthetic and allegorical mutations that join the heart of a history of representations. In another side, the prosopographic survey reveals economic and family relationships securely nested and delivers explanatory elements of the reality of small farm functioning and behavioural mechanisms that govern the formation of a family culture. De facto, this work aims to provide a contribution to the understanding of the historical genesis of a professional group, whose history is constructed in terms of lineage and genealogy

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper presents different aspects of architect Aldo Rossi's thought related to analogy. The idea of type which is central to The Architecture of the City, is reinterpreted here in relation with Rossi's ideas about analogy which are proposed in A Scientific Autobiography. The influence of Etienne-Louis Boullee and Ernesto Rogers are discussed. Rossi's architectural type is related to Carl Jung's archetype whose numinous and compulsive aspects relate type to Rossi's ideas about architecture as instrument or apparatus. The theme of the cabine and the sea, and that of deposition are analyzed in order to illustrate the ideas above. The deposition introduces a discussion of Rossi's ambivalence about the role of type and the possibilities of architecture today. Finally, the moral and political aspects of these theories about analogy is presented in relation Rossi's ideas of the analogous city and of technique.

Wood, Mary Patricia. "Francesco Rosi : an auteur? : the cinema of Francesco Rosi." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1994. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1317565/.

Full text
Abstract:
Auteurist approaches developed in the 1950s studied films as a means of personal expression, valuing those directors who could bring an individual quality to their films as 'auteurs' . More recent theories of subjectivity and textuality have displaced the centrality of the director as author of meanings in the film texts, but have had difficulty in explaining the continued importance accorded to directors in interviews and writing about their films. The interaction of directorial intention, film industry, and the use of other media to communicate the director's ideas to audiences is an area of continued theoretical concern. It is the aim of this work firstly to examine how Francesco Rosi has managed to constitute himself as an 'auteur' within the institutional structures of the Italian film industry, and the constraints which these impose. Between 1958 and today Rosi has made fifteen films, the majority of which to a greater or lesser extent engage with the reality of contemporary Italy. He works within the mainstream of the Italian film industry. His work can, however, be located within that narrow band of 1- 2% of films produced each season which can be designated 'art' or 'quality' cinema, as opposed to more or less formulaic genre products. This study aims to show that the institutional structures of the Italian film - and latterly media - industries have a primary influence both on the particular narrative patterns Rosi has at his disposal, and on the particular types of films which Rosi as director is financed to make. Secondly, I examine elements of Rosi's films which mark him out as an 'auteur'. Through close textual analysis, I identify recurring visual, rhetorical and narrative choices which can be shown to signal the presence of the 'auteur', Rosi, in the film texts, and to constitute his style.

Abstract:
This study examines the 23 works of fiction published by rose macaulay in the first half of the twentieth century. As her writing had many close connections with her life, a biographical sketch can remind the reader of the most significant episodes of her life (1881-1958), especially her childhood in italy, her studies at oxford, her meeting with gerald o'donovan, her innumerable journeys and the serenity brought to her last years by her return to the church. The end of the first section deals with the evolution of her literary career and reputation, her views on the novel as a genre and the genesis of her works. The second section analyses the different aspects of her novels. They are the works of an intellectual who has a cult for knowledge and whose staggering erudition appears at every page; of a journalist who offers us a rich chronicle of the political, social and religious life of her time; of a historian deeply in love with the past; of a moralist, keenly aware of the tragic meaning of life, but who remains nevertheless a tolerant nonconformist. The third section discusses the three key motifs - travelling, woman and religion - of a writer who dreams of "abroad", especially mediterranean and exotic countries, who, although a rather moderate feminist, succeeds in creating a number of unforgettable female characters, and who, despite a long period of agnosticism, shows a constant interest in the church of england the last part is devoted to the art of the novelist. If her technique remains traditional, her characters are remarkably real and alive

Abstract:

Abstract:
Basic concepts and definitions relative to Lagrangian Particle Dispersion Models (LPDMs)for the description of turbulent dispersion are introduced. The study focusses on LPDMs that use as input, for the large scale motion, fields produced by Eulerian models, with the small scale motions described by Lagrangian Stochastic Models (LSMs). The data of two different dynamical model have been used: a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and a General Circulation Model (GCM). After reviewing the small scale closure adopted by the Eulerian model, the development and implementation of appropriate LSMs is outlined. The basic requirement of every LPDM used in this work is its fullfillment of the Well Mixed Condition (WMC). For the dispersion description in the GCM domain, a stochastic model of Markov order 0, consistent with the eddy-viscosity closure of the dynamical model, is implemented. A LSM of Markov order 1, more suitable for shorter timescales, has been implemented for the description of the unresolved motion of the LES fields. Different assumptions on the small scale correlation time are made. Tests of the LSM on GCM fields suggest that the use of an interpolation algorithm able to maintain an analytical consistency between the diffusion coefficient and its derivative is mandatory if the model has to satisfy the WMC. Also a dynamical time step selection scheme based on the diffusion coefficient shape is introduced, and the criteria for the integration step selection are discussed. Absolute and relative dispersion experiments are made with various unresolved motion settings for the LSM on LES data, and the results are compared with laboratory data. The study shows that the unresolved turbulence parameterization has a negligible influence on the absolute dispersion, while it affects the contribution of the relative dispersion and meandering to absolute dispersion, as well as the Lagrangian correlation.

Abstract:
Impartial combinatorial game theory will be explained briefly and used to analyze two impartial take-away heap games, ”The Princess and the Roses” (P&R) and ”The Princess and Two Roses” (P2R). P2R is a variant of P&R that only allows taking one chip from two different heaps. Sprague-Grundy values are calculated by computer for positions up to six heaps and thirty chips in each heap for both games. From patterns out of the data achieved, P-positions are described for any amount of chips in five heaps or less for P&R and P2R. In P2R the pattern of P-positions, for five heaps where the smallest heap is odd, is not proven and is therefore stated as a conjecture.
Grundläggande opartisk kombinatorisk spelteori förklaras och används för att analysera två opartiska kombinatoriska högspel, ”The Princess and the Roses” (P&R) och ”The Princess and Two Roses” (P2R).

Abstract:

It is believed that the biocontrol of gray mold with C. rosea under field conditions is viable. However mass production of the antagonist must be optimized and a formulation of low cost and stable over time must be developed. Therefore this research aimed to develop methods to produce and commercialize C. rosea in a commercial scale. We evaluated different substrates, the optimization to production, the optimum time to production, the supplementation of substrate, the initial inoculum concentration, the production of spores on absence of light, and the production of spores in different containers. Millet, soybean straw, and bean straw were efficient as substrates to produce spores, which was affected by the level of moisture on each substrate. The addition of V8 ® vegetable juice increased the sporulation on rice. The opening of the container after 6 days of colonization reduced the time to start to collect spores and increased spores production. The range of initial concentration tested (10 3 to 10 8 ) did not affect the final spores production. After 30 days, it was found no significant difference between the production of spores on absence of light and photoperiod of 12h. We also evaluated the survival of spores of C. rosea in a formulation stored at 4°C or laboratory temperature (24±2°C) after different drying times (12, 24, 36 and 48 h) with two solvents (water and sucrose 35%). The survival of spores in ground substrate, with or without Kaulin, stored at 4°C or environment temperature was evaluated. The ability of these spores to colonize leaves of eucalyptus was also evaluated after 4 months storage. The germination of formulated spores of all treatments reduced to zero after 2 months of evaluation. In the ground substrate, germination significantly increased in the presence of Kaulin, storage at 4°C, at the second month of evaluation, but it was zero after 2 months of evaluation. However the fungus colonized eucalyptus leaves even after the formulated spores being stored for 4 months storage. Therefore, it is possible that the spores become dormant, which will be studied later.

This exegesis interrogates the mental illness Pure Erotomania, the rare delusional disorder which presents with the sufferer having the delusional (and therefore unshakeable) belief that the person they objectify is in love with them. My play Yellow Roses in Fortitude Valley is about one woman's emotional journey as she is relentlessly stalked by a Pure Erotomanic male. It is a fascinating mental illness, which includes all the 'box office type' features, which make it an exciting and frightening subject to write a dramatic work about. It is confusing, illusory, surreal and frightening, but best of all for the writer and audience it is a real human condition. Yellow Roses in Fortitude Valley is written in a style that truthfully represents and portrays the journey and struggle for both the victim and the sufferer. The research undertaken for both the play and exegesis was a hybrid of many overlapping disciplines involved in the current discourse. As a recently diagnosed and recognized disorder, it is still new territory for professionals in the field and for audience members. I believe this makes it an opportune time for an academically researched creative project to enter into current discourse. Previous creative works on this topic, some of which I have interrogated, have approached the issue of stalking as a predator/victim scenario, an unrequited love or a domestic violence situation. I wished to portray the stalking as a mental illness in the form of the psychiatric disorder Erotomania, my approach undertaking to explain victim impact and the prolonged and chronic course of Erotomanic stalking. I also wished to illustrate the underlying themes which I uncovered during my research, being; female victims of sex crimes; dominant patriarchal ideology; and the current interventions in stalking by the legal and mental health systems.

Abstract:
Nodal sections of the winter-hardy 'John Franklin' rose cultivar from field-grown plants were cultured on a modified Murashige and Skoog (MS) nutrient medium. Very high levels of contamination from the surface of the initial sections required that plants be grown under greenhouse conditions. Rose plantlets obtained from subsequent subcultures were used for the first time in a radiotracer experiment with $ sp{32}$P to study the kinetics of phosphorus (P) uptake as a function of temperature of the nutrient medium. P uptake increased with time for rooted and non-rooted plantlets in a linear fashion that did not reach an equilibrium value even after 96 hours of exposure. An analysis of variance revealed that the plantlets with roots absorbed significantly greater amounts of P at the 0.01 level compared with non-rooted plantlets at 22$ sp circ$C. P uptake was significantly higher at the 0.05 level, for rooted versus non-rooted plantlets at 33$ sp circ$C. There was no significant difference in P uptake by rooted and non-rooted plantlets at 3$ sp circ$C. Interaction between time of exposures and rooting was found to be significant at 22$ sp circ$C and 33$ sp circ$C at the 0.01 level. The results indicated that the root system, previously thought to be inefficient in the nutrient absorption, played a key role in absorbing P from the nutrient medium at optimum temperature.

Objective: To report a case of orbital mass and proptosis, diagnosed as Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD). Methods: Clinical case report based on the review of clinical charts, radiological images, and histopathology. Results: A 42-year-old male with orbital mass and proptosis of the right eye. A surgical biopsy was performed, and the diagnosis of RDD was established using microscopy and immunohistochemistry. Definitive management included open tumour cytoreduction, with good response. Discussion: The RDD is a rare, benign, proliferative condition of unknown origin. It rarely affects the cranial cavities, with the orbital presentation being very unusual. Diagnostic confirmation is essential for the best surgical management.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Rosa gallica L., a perennial, tetraploid, heterozygous species that propagates naturally by seed and sucker, occurs in the wild, mainly in Europe, and as cultivars. In France, its wild genetic diversity is geographically structured. In addition, this species is thought to be at the origin of the first horticultural groups (Hybrid Gallica, Centifolia, Alba, Damas...) of roses from which modern roses are derived by hybridization. The aims of this thesis are (1) to identify the factors responsible for the structure of French populations by characterizing European wild diversity, and (2) to assess the contribution of R. gallica to the first horticultural groups. Nearly 1,600 individuals, both wild, sampled over almost the entire European range, and cultivated were genotyped by sequencing newlydeveloped microsatellites. To analyze these data in polyploids, a method for predicting ploidy levels was developed. French diversity is particularly structured compared to the rest of Europe, suggesting multiple origins in France. As in the rest of Europe, populations on the eastern side of France seem to have originated by natural dispersal from a glacial refugium located further south. In contrast, populations on the western side of the country appear to be the result of more recent humanor natural dispersal. Unlike the Hybrid Gallica, the other ancient horticultural groups are the result of interspecific hybridizations. These findings represent a step towards understanding the evolutionary history of R. gallica

Abstract:
The production of new rose cultivars by sexual crossing is problematic and time consuming due to sexual incompatibility. the failure of seeds to genninate. and to a limited gene pool. Biotechnology provides an obvious alternative for the creation of genetic novelty in rose. This thesis focuses on the development of novel approaches, based on embryo rescue, pollen cryopreservation, protoplast and transformation technologies. A reproducible embryo rescue technique was developed in which embryos were excised and genninated on agar solidified medium containing a basic salt mixture and carbohydrate. The choice of carbohydrate and the growth conditions employed were demonstrated to markedly affect the percentage germination and subsequent plantlet development. This technique was used to greatly increase the production of F, hybrid progeny when compared to conventional germination methods. The failure of sexual crosses between several English rose cultivars was shown to be due to a combination of low pollen viability and to the operation of a pollen-style incompatibility mechanism (probably of the gametophytic self-incompatibility type). Degree of flower opening and method of pollen dehiscence were shown to significantly affect pollen viability. A technique was developed for the effective cryopreservation of English rose pollen. Using this technique it was possible to store pollen at ultra-low temperatures without any significant loss in viability. Such a technique compared favourably with conventional techniques (refrigeration and freezing) in which a loss in viability over time was demonstrated to occur. In vitro shoot cultures of English rose were established on MS-based media containing BAP. GA3 and NAA following the treatment of explants with an antioxidant solution to negate the effects of phenolic oxidation. The production of callus was shown to be genotype dependant and lacked regeneration potential. Rhizogenic responses were observed in leaf discs of two cultivars however shoot regeneration was not observed. Using a variety of enzyme mixtures it was possible to isolate protoplasts from both In vitro leaf material and from cell suspensions. Both mesophyll and cell suspension derived protoplasts were cultured to a microcallus stage. Plating density, growth regulator concentration and the use of antioxidants were all demonstrated to have a significant effect on the protoplast plating efficiency. Rhizogenesis was achieved from mesophyll protoplast-derived calli. Protoplasts, sometimes labelled with a fluorescent marker, were subjected to both chemical and electrofusion. Using micromanipulation, heterokaryons, formed during electrofusion, were recovered. Such heterokaryons, when cultured. underwent division and formed microcalli which subsequently developed into calli. The hybrid nature of such calli were conftrmed by isozyme analysis, determination of ploidy level and RAPD analysis. The introduction of a plasmid containing a gus marker gene into zygotic embryos of English rose was shown to be possible. This was achieved by microprojectile-mediated DNA delivery using a laboratory built electrical discharge device. The efficiency of this technique was influenced by the concentration of microprojectiles and DNA used. And by firing distance and choice of DNA construct. The relevance of this study and its applications, in the context of rose breeding are discussed.

Abstract:
This thesis conducts the first book-length study on the operation of the Rose playhouse as a key theatrical presence whose operational history spanned over a transitional period for early modern English theatre. Inspired by the current increasing awareness of the playing company as an organising unit in additional to the author-based perspectives for studying early modern English drama, this project undertakes the task of examining the Rose playhouse as a unit for theatrical production and a nexus where various strands of the material, cultural-geographical, political, financial, as well as literary forces converged and interacted with each other.
