Abstract:
AbstractDuring Late Paleocene–Early Eocene times, the modern Rosebank structure was located at the juxtaposition of the easterly advancing Flett volcanic system and the northerly prograding Flett delta. As a result, the Rosebank reservoir sandstones are interstratified with volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks, offering challenges for reservoir imaging, depth prediction and reservoir characterization. These challenges have driven the application of Ocean Bottom Node (OBN) seismic technology. OBN data have yielded improved velocity models for depth conversion, better reservoir definition and key insights to aid the modelling of sand distribution from seismic attributes. Spectral decomposition of the OBN seismic data has facilitated the extraction of distinct volcanic subunits, whilst spectral enhancement has enabled visualization of complex stacking patterns within individual igneous layers. To complement the seismic analysis, detailed geological analogue studies have been undertaken in volcanic provinces such as the Palaeogene volcanic district of SE Greenland and the Columbia River Flood Basalt Province, USA. No single outcrop provides a definitive analogy to Rosebank, but each offers insights that provide an important link to understanding and managing the main subsurface uncertainties associated with field development. Integration of these multiple workflows have improved the reservoir characterization and provided the foundation for the optimization of the field development plan.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The Rosebank hydrocarbon discovery in 2004 proved that intra-lava sandstones form attractive reservoirs in the Faroe–Shetland Basin and the new volcanic play triggered the need for suitable analogues to describe and assess sedimentology, reservoir architecture, compartmentalization, and connectivity of intra-lava siliciclastic units. The onshore Kangerlussuaq Basin in East Greenland offers the opportunity to study Paleogene intra-lava siliciclastic sandstones and their interaction with lavas, on the scale of the Rosebank Field. The focus of this study is a siliciclastic-dominated intra-lava unit, 4–10 m thick, exposed in almost vertical cliff sections over distances of several kilometers. The unit reflects a short return to siliciclastic deposition following initiation of volcanic activity and extrusion of the first lava flows in the area. Deposition took place as shoreface and delta progradation in a marine-influenced, shallow embayment. Lateral variations in sedimentary facies distribution and geometry are prominent and were largely governed by an interplay of base-level variations and autocyclic processes, the surface roughness and type of substratum on which deposition took place, and differential block movements before and during deposition. Presence of local topographic barriers are of key importance and influenced the lava–sediment interaction and the resulting 3D-geometry of lava flows and sediment bodies. In addition, compartmentalization of the intra-lava sandstone unit is observed and is controlled by the offset across normal faults, intersecting dikes, and to a lesser extent by invasive and eroding lavas. A depositional model is suggested that incorporates the detailed sedimentological and 3D photogrammetric observations and presents a possible explanation for the contrasting architecture of the intra-lava unit observed in three areas located a few kilometers apart. The model embraces the complex interplay between siliciclastic and volcanic settings and reveals important aspects to consider when recoverable volumes of hydrocarbons are estimated in intra-volcanic subsurface reservoirs in volcanic rifted margins with poor seismic imaging of the relatively thin intra-lava reservoirs.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Rosebank Field is located primarily in Block 213/27a in the Faroe–Shetland Basin, c. 130 km west of the Shetland Islands in water depths of c. 1100 m (3600 ft). Hydrocarbons are trapped within an elongate, SW–NE-trending four-way anticlinal structure. The principal Colsay Sandstone Member reservoir consists of several vertically stacked, Late Paleocene to Early Eocene fluvial and deltaic reservoirs separated by volcanic sequences. Well log and core data indicate that reservoir quality is high, with porosities in the range of 19–23% and average permeability of c. 3 D. Oil quality is also high, with average oil gravity of 37°API and in-situ viscosity of c. 1 cP at a mean reservoir temperature of 175°F. The field holds a substantial resource and is currently under evaluation for development.

Abstract:
AbstractThe UK Rockall Basin is one of the most underexplored areas of the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS), with only 12 exploration wells drilled since 1980. With only one discovery made in 2000 (Benbecula (154/1-1) gas discovery), the general view of the basin from an exploration viewpoint is not positive. However, over the last 15 years, our knowledge of the petroleum systems of the Atlantic Margin has substantially increased. With the recent acquisition of new seismic data by the UK Government as part of the OGA's Frontiers Basin Research Programme, it is a pertinent time to re-examine the prospectivity of the UK Rockall Basin. This paper presents a history of exploration within the UK Rockall Basin, from the first well drilled in the basin in 1980, to the last well, drilled in 2006. We then present new insights into the lack of success during exploration within the basin, in particular by focusing on the extensive Early Cenozoic volcanic rocks within Rockall, to illustrate the wide range of potential interactions with the petroleum system. We also present evidence that points to the potential of a viable intra-basaltic (Rosebank) type play along the eastern flank of the Rockall Basin.

Wiseman, K. H. "Development of a constitutive model for a heaving clay from Rosebank." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/8452.

Full text
Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 135-142.
Heaving clays are partially saturated soils composed of a high fraction of the montmorillonite clay mineral. When exposed to free water they undergo volumetric expansion, which often results in differential movements at the surface and damage to building structures founded on the clay. The economic consequences of such damage is severe. Heaving clay causes in excess of R100 million damage in South Africa each year, making it the country's most significant problem soil. The best method of dealing with a heaving clay is through appropriate design. This would be facilitated if methods such as finite element analysis were available to designers. The aim of this research project was to develop a constitutive model for an expansive clay which could be numerically implemented within the finite element method. A review of available literature on expansive clays showed that the heave strain that clay under an applied load will undergo can be expressed in terms of the parameters percent heave and heave pressure. These parameters are influenced by the degree of moisture changes experienced by the soil, and its dry density. Various different methods of establishing the percent heave and heave pressure have been proposed, but the values given by each differ due to the influence of different test stress paths on the results. More detailed examination of the effect of test stress path on the volume of heaving clays was therefore required to resolve the reasons for the differences in the test results, and to give a fuller understanding of the volumetric response of the material for the purposes of developing the constitutive model. Hence a series of laboratory tests was conducted on a clay from Rosebank in the Cape Province to investigate the effect of test stress path on the clay volume.

Baylis, Michael Leighton. "Transit-oriented development: a case study of Rosebank, City of Johannesburg." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/25164.

Abstract:
The use of the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) concept is commonplace in many South African municipal spatial development frameworks aimed at guiding future urban development towards more compact and efficient forms. The indication is that the achievement of planned TOD (i.e. where there is an approved spatial development framework), an area of high density, mixed land use served by car-competitive public transport services, is often hampered by the absence of aligned policies and other factors that would help achieve success. This research looks into these policies and success factors, and more specifically considers whether parking provision and management in such areas is a critical component in achieving or discouraging modal change from private car usage to public and non-motorised movement and the achievement of a desirable high density live-and-work environment. It uses the long-established Rosebank Regional Node in the City of Johannesburg and the approved Rosebank Urban Development Framework, 2008, ("RUDF") as a case study, quantifying the spatial planning proposals and identifying possible shortcomings in the implementation of the TOD in this existing suburban area, now served by a Gautrain Station. The quantification of the RUDF proposals serves to identify the proposed land uses within the node and facilitates the application of the relevant parking standards and trip generation factors applicable to each, thereby illustrating the traffic demand on the road network as well as the parking to be supplied if current parking policies are adhered to. These are then compared the road network's capacity to identify mismatches. The research shows that the current practice of promoting densification while applying the standard parking suburban regulations (drafted in 1979) will not achieve a less private-cardependent lifestyle, and that without integrating parking policy and traffic demand management into the planning strategy, the likelihood is that the TOD vision will fail.

Raithatha, Bansri Gitesh. "The sealing potential of volcanic rocks in hydrocarbon systems : a case study from the Rosebank Field." Thesis, Durham University, 2017. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/11978/.

Abstract:
Hydrocarbon exploration in frontier regions has resulted in a series of discoveries within intra- and sub-volcanic basins along the NE Atlantic margin. The majority of these basins are blanketed by varying thicknesses of subaerial lavas and volcaniclastic sequences that form the Paleogene-aged North Atlantic Igneous Province. During Exploratory drilling in 2004, the 213/27-1Z well encountered two oil and gas accumulation with a total pay thickness of 52 metres, within the Late Palaeocene-Early Eocene aged Colsay Member sandstones within the Rosebank Field. These hydrocarbon-bearing reservoir intervals comprise numerous fluvial clastic sequences that are inter-layered between sub-aerially erupted basaltic lavas and volcaniclastic sediments. This discovery gave rise to a new hydrocarbon play concept. In this study, the sealing potential of the volcanic and volcaniclastic sequences is investigated using multi-scale subsurface datasets (with a particular emphasis on the value of high resolution borehole image logs; FMI) and field analogues from the Faroe Islands. Through the combined use of wireline logs (Bivariate cross-plots) and high resolution FMI images, the volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks in the Rosebank Volcanic Formations (RVFs) were characterised, and a detailed volcanic stratigraphic section of the RVFs was constructed, to understand how these lithologies vary vertically and laterally between wells. Bivariate cross-plots (photoelectric factor versus bulk density) indicates that there are two distinct compositions of lava flows: (a) Lava Type I is characteristic of the Rosebank Lower Volcanics, and has a higher Iron/Magnesium variety, suggesting that it was emplaced during the initial phase of volcanism; and, (b) Lava Type II is characteristic in the Upper and Lower Rosebank Middle Volcanics (RMV_U and RMV_L) and the Rosebank Upper Volcanics, and is depleted in Iron and Magnesium. The FMI images revealed that the RVFs comprise a diverse and complex suite of volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks (e.g. pillow lavas, hyaloclastite, sub-aerial lavas and inter-basaltic rocks), some of which exhibit complex diagenetic overprints produced during post-volcanic process. Detailed interpretation of FMI images and integration with wireline logs showed that the ratio of volcanic, volcaniclastic and siliciclastic rocks varied between studied wells, for example the southernmost wells in Rosebank Main (205/1-1, 213/26-1, 213/26-1z and 213/27-1Z) comprise 57-62% sub-aerially erupted pahoehoe lava, ~25% volcaniclastic rocks, and ~15% siliciclastic rocks, while the wells in northern Rosebank Main (213/27-4 and 213/27-2) comprise ~35% sub-aerially erupted lava, ~50% volcaniclastic rocks, and ~20% siliciclastic rocks. These ratios indicate that the sub-aerially erupted lavas are thinning to the North of the field. Fractures interpreted in the volcanic rocks in the RVFs mainly occur in the more brittle units, for example, in the massive cores of sub-aerially erupted lava flows. Fractures distribution in the RVFs is strongly controlled by the type of lithology (e.g. simple lava flow, pillow lava, hyaloclastite etc.), their thickness and the degree of secondary degradation and alteration they have undergone. In comparison to the Colsay reservoir intervals, the RVFs are more brittle and highly fractured and thus much more prone to fracturing during drilling. Their sealing potential decreases from southern Rosebank Main to northern Rosebank Main, predominantly because the RVFs are much thinner to the North, and contain large, connected fractures. The inter-layering between volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks in southern Rosebank Main acts as an efficient vertical seal because the volcaniclastics tend to be clay-rich and do not fracture as easily. In terms of sealing potential, all the RVFs except RMV_U are low risk seals, suggesting that in some parts of the field, particularly in the northern most part of Rosebank Main, the Colsay 1 and 2 reservoir intervals may be connected. Evidence of faulting in the RVFs is infrequent in the FMI images, although where inferred, they tend to occur at contacts between lava and volcaniclastic rocks, usually at the transitional interface between the Colsay reservoir intervals and the RVFs. Similarly, faults were interpreted in the Ocean Bottom Node (OBN) seismic data, although they are generally small and discontinuous. It is therefore predicted that if faults are present in Rosebank, they are likely to be low-strain with minimal displacement. Integration of field analogues from the Faroe Islands with the subsurface datasets (FMI and recovered core) suggests that the majority of the fractures interpreted from the FMI images, and any possible faults within the RVFs, are likely to be sealing. Vein infill at the studied outcrops indicate that cementation rates were low, and therefore many fractures were still potential conduits. In Rosebank, however, due to high cementation rates, most of the fractures are completely healed. This also provides a significant clue on hydrocarbon migration within the Colsay reservoirs. It is evident that none of the fractures or the volcanic rocks recovered either through full core recovery, or side-wall cores, have any hydrocarbon shows, and therefore, the fractures present in the RVFs are likely to have been completely filled, during hydrocarbon migration into the Colsay reservoirs. It is therefore suggested that, hydrocarbons laterally migrated into the Colsay sands from the sands in the Flett Basin, and because the fractures in the RVFs did not act as conduits for fluid flow, the hydrocarbons were successfully trapped within their respective reservoirs.

Chisango, Russell. "Evaluating an information literacy intervention for first year faculty of business students at Rosebank College Cape Town." Thesis, UWC, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/3232.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of an Information Literacy intervention administered to first year Faculty of Business students at Rosebank College Cape Town. The exponential nature of information has led to students having access to abundant information which often comes unfiltered. This requires them to be in possession of life long competencies to find and apply this information to solve problems. Recent shifts in pedagogy and curricula have also precipitated the importance of independent learners who are capable of constructing their own knowledge. Student centred methods of teaching employed in tertiary institutions such as, problem based learning, evidence based learning and inquiry learning have necessitated the importance of Information Literacy training towards the development of independent learners. The study assesses the baseline incoming skills of the Faculty of Business students. Two intervention workshops are conducted for the experimental cohort and a post-test is administered. After the post-test the results of the control and experimental group are compared. The study uses the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Information Literacy Standards for higher education as a theoretical foundation. The standards are applied as benchmarks when assessing the Information Literacy competencies. The study explores the following research questions:  Are the Information Literacy interventions administered to the first year business faculty students effective and do they meet the proposed outcomes?  What are the existing Information Literacy competencies of the incoming students in the Faculty of Business?  How should Information Literacy programmes be delivered?  Are the ACRL standards a reliable tool to assess Information Literacy skills and the effectiveness of the interventions administered? The study found out that offering Information Literacy interventions would result in students accumulating these skills. This is supported by the difference in scores between the control group and the experimental cohort. However it must be noted that Information Literacy training is not an event but rather an on-going process.

Hattingh, Jan Harm. "In motion: a transport interchange in Rosebank." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/7968.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis developed from an interest in pedestrian infrastructure and motorised transport. No investigation into the current situation is needed to establish the fact that these two entities struggle to find a balance in the urban and suburban landscape. What does however need investigation is the small pockets throughout the landscape that achieve a balance. R R osebank was chosen as it appears to be one of those pockets where a balance is achieved. However, with the introduction of a major Gautrain underground train station with Oxford Road being streamlined above it and an expected 100 000 daily commuters, the balance will be disturbed. The current station proposal turns its back on the pedestrian realm and promotes motorised transport with little understanding of how such a station can have a positive impact on the urban landscape. This thesis attempts to explore the Gautrain train station as more than just a single idea. Through local investigation it concludes that all forms of transport must be considered when implementing new forms of public transport. An equitable balance must be achieved throughout the entire project. It further explores and implements the theory of linking spaces and commuters throughout the project. It considers various forms of how this can be achieved and finally how visual linkage can be used to guide commuters through what can be a disorienting experience. A large amount of time was spent on site to test theories, gain an understanding of pedestrian and motorist’s needs and to fully understand the potential dynamics of how a transport interchange would affect the existing urban fabric. The project is a transport interchange using the Gautrain station as the nucleus for the platforms, station buildings, new taxi rank, new private taxi pick up point and BRT stations

Abstract:

Identity construction amongst the youth is a vital process as it shapes who they are and what they want to be. Rapid social change contributes a great deal to the ways people create and shape their identities. This study focuses on youth identity construction in South Africa, specifically among young people at The Zone, a shopping mall in Rosebank, Johannesburg. In South Africa much research has been done on youths mainly focusing on delinquency. There is thus a knowledge gap with regard to youth identity and the positive aspects of life. This study, therefore, aims to shed light on the positive aspects of identity construction among the youth. Previous studies on youth identity construction have shown that youth identities are constructed in a world where popular culture dominates people’s existence. The construction of youth identity at The Zone is examined by focusing on music, fashion and technology as the main elements of popular culture. The theoretical framework of this study is derived mainly from scholarly work on identity formation, popular culture and youth culture at The Zone. For this study, both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used in which the following data gathering processes were applied: focus groups, semi-structured face-toface interviews, and questionnaires. The findings of the study show that identity construction amongst the youth is done through their interaction with one another as well as the images, styles and entertainment that form part of popular culture. Democratic South Africa has opened doors of choices for young people. Within certain constraints, they are able to do what they like, become who they like and explore their identities. The findings show that even though they come from different backgrounds, their aspirations to be hip and sophisticated, as dictated by popular culture, are similar.

The study had an observational, descriptive, cross sectional design. The sample consisted of 205 participants selected through convenience sampling. All students who presented for HIV testing during the colleges’ HIV Counselling and Testing campaign in December 2011 were asked to complete a self-administered closed-ended questionnaire voluntarily. The data was analysed with EPI Info versions 3.5.1. A frequency analysis was conducted for all the variables such as demographics, risk perception to HIV, knowledge of HIV, HIV testing behaviour. The association between HIV knowledge, risk perception and risk behaviours were assessed for gender differences. Chi-square analysis was conducted to determine the association between the main variable of interest HIV risk behaviour and each other explanatory variable (demographics, HIV knowledge, risk perception etc). Results were discussed using the theory of planned behaviour.

Hlongwane, Siphathisiwe. "Seams on a Mannequin : A catalogue to integrate tailors and designers into the urban fabric of Rosebank." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/12969.

Full text
Abstract:
Perceptions determine the way in which we view people and in turn how we are viewed. Just as clothing can disguise the true identity of a person, facades can mask the real character of a building (Craik, 1994). These layers affect a lot of our choices: which building we will enter, where we will choose to shop, what we will purchase, and how much we are willing to spend on the product (Solomon, 1999). A large number of garment makers are not as successful as they could be, as a result of negative perceptions. Despite that Johannesburg is in a post apartheid era many people are still marginalized and located in less affluent parts of the city. Seams on a mannequin is an exploration into how architecture can break down perceptions about social standing and values which have lead to the marginalization of highly skilled garment makers. These garment makers have been placed in buildings of less value, they end up generating less income than the high end brands and yet they are able to provide such a specialized service. The Mannequin is a building designed with the intention of illustrating that garment makers can be able to sustain themselves if they are located in an upmarket precinct in which there is the desired client base for the garment makers. The building will be located in Rosebank, a suburb in which there will be an opportunity for the garment makers to be exposed to the relevant clientele and also where upcoming designers would want to be located. Architecture may be used to brand the spaces from which these garment makers operate, thereby creating positive perceptions about them and the value of their products. This thesis proposes to add another layer to the existing urban fabric of Rosebank. A layer which will facilitate the efficient production, and the appreciation of the value, of customized clothing in the local context. The building will act as a seam- stitching together this new layer with the existing urban fabric. The building is titled the mannequin because it may be dressed up and dressed down. This creates opportunities for it to take different characters, through its unique ability to change through seasons, time of day and trends. The hope is that the perceptions, which people have about the value of the service provided by tailors, will be deconstructed. This should initiate a higher awareness of the value in customized, and not just branded, garments and thereby produce a higher income for the tailors, and designers, so that they may be able to self sustain in upmarket precincts.

Abstract:
In 1993, Neville Exler filmed on his Sony Handicam, the three Connell brothers on site at their market garden on Rosebank Road. This film was made just as these men, the last farmers on Rosebank Road were negotiating the sale of their farmland for development, and so ending the last chapter of Rosebank Road as the fruit and vegetable basket of Auckland. In 2012 this video was given to our research collective to convert to digital format.
