Full textRosa gallica L., a perennial, tetraploid, heterozygous species that propagates naturally by seed and sucker, occurs in the wild, mainly in Europe, and as cultivars. In France, its wild genetic diversity is geographically structured. In addition, this species is thought to be at the origin of the first horticultural groups (Hybrid Gallica, Centifolia, Alba, Damas...) of roses from which modern roses are derived by hybridization. The aims of this thesis are (1) to identify the factors responsible for the structure of French populations by characterizing European wild diversity, and (2) to assess the contribution of R. gallica to the first horticultural groups. Nearly 1,600 individuals, both wild, sampled over almost the entire European range, and cultivated were genotyped by sequencing newlydeveloped microsatellites. To analyze these data in polyploids, a method for predicting ploidy levels was developed. French diversity is particularly structured compared to the rest of Europe, suggesting multiple origins in France. As in the rest of Europe, populations on the eastern side of France seem to have originated by natural dispersal from a glacial refugium located further south. In contrast, populations on the western side of the country appear to be the result of more recent humanor natural dispersal. Unlike the Hybrid Gallica, the other ancient horticultural groups are the result of interspecific hybridizations. These findings represent a step towards understanding the evolutionary history of R. gallica

Full textFrom 1520 up to 1580, western christianity was split by the two competing protestant and catholic reformations. Each camp set up its own church which pretended to be universal, yet this denominational settlement (konfessionsbildung) was too quick to be fully acceptable by all christians (it hardly covered a life-span). Neither the history of churches nor a history of doctrines have so far properly insisted on the existence of a distinctive via media advocated by a number of contemporaries. This approach rests on a history of religious sensibility, and a number of individual cases emerge. Four groups of people were involved at the time : nicodemites, moyenneurs, temporiseurs et ireniques. The nicodemites (in particular Marguerite de Navarre and her confessor, Gérard Roussel) and the middle-of-the-road moyenneurs (Claude D’Espense, cardinal Charles de Lorraine, Charles du Moulin, Jean de Monluc and Michel de L'Hospital. . . ) Lived in the fir st half of the sixteenth century, prior to the 1550-60 turning point. They could still regard themselves as catholic, though it was increasingly difficult to avoid denominational commitment. The irenics (especially the protestant jean hotman de villiers and the catholic pierre de l'estoile) only paid lip service to religious allegiance, while the delaying temporiseurs (Hugues Sureau du Rosier, and some inhabitants of troyes in champagne and lectoure in gascony) tri ed to postpone their choice indefinitely in the 1560s-1580s. This study questions received denominational interpretation s, by introducing new, hitherto unexplored distinctions between catholicism and the catholic reformation. Full textThis thesis on the story of Lyon’s roses’ breeders between 1820 and 1939 focuses on several issues: the individual and the family farm, the commercial activity and consumers’ tastes, and the collective action of a profession which gradually stands apart from the horticultural world. From the apparition of first specializations around 1820 to the decline of the activity related to roses during the interwar, the periodization highlights the golden age of French roses’ culture materialized, among others, by the formation of professional lines throughout the nineteenth century. This study proposes to reconstruct various aspects, historical, entrepreneurial, socio-economic, technical or cultural of the activity and provides explanatory material in order to understand the work of breeders: they belong to the excellence of the horticultural world and are, as such, subject to the history of elites – we are talking here of professional elites: With the archives of companies – account books, shipping records, professional correspondence – the thesis updates the developments of the roses’ market and shows how a marginal activity, ignored by official statistics, develops through an extensive sales network. In order to do so, the overview of buyers and the examination of an elitist and fashionable clients permits to decrypts the consumption of an epoch and the emergence of new aesthetic codes articulated around a product that refers to cultural practices and social and identity constructions. The exploitation of quantified data about the market’s structuration, the nominal identification of clients and the periodization of roses’ trends, illustrated by a statistical analysis of the preferences of buyers, give to this thesis a new and original approach. The analysis of economic and social logics that have influenced the success and the decline of the roses’ sector show the functioning of a traditional industry, its quantitative and qualitative evolution and the organization of a large-scale market, supported by a know-how which guarantees the quality of the product and the choice of the buyer. Some of those micro-companies consolidate their position by choosing a dynamic policy using and combining both sales’ mechanisms and creative talents, taking relatively modern business practices in response to a gradual increase and diversification of commercial transactions. Concerning the matching of supply and demand, it shows a broadening of the customer, which is related to the economic and cultural changes brought about by the expansion of leisure in most social groups who see the flowers ’culture as a relaxing activity and a way to beautify the living environment. Throughout the reflexion, new floral preferences established have been declined; around aesthetic considerations which are not unrelated with the development of ornamental staging which landscape architects strive to reproduce. Isn’t the novelty of a colour a preeminent element determining the success of a variety? In this sense, the enthusiasm for the yellow rose lets us know about codes of elegance that became widespread in the gardens. The colorimetry is therefore a privileged observatory of sensibilities and aesthetic and allegorical mutations that join the heart of a history of representations.In another side, the prosopographic survey reveals economic and family relationships securely nested and delivers explanatory elements of the reality of small farm functioning and behavioural mechanisms that govern the formation of a family culture. De facto, this work aims to provide a contribution to the understanding of the historical genesis of a professional group, whose history is constructed in terms of lineage and genealogy

Full textIn 1867, history painting may seem to be on the decline but, actually, it may have never been, in the XIXth century at the very least, so dynamic than it was between this date and 1900. In theory first, this genre assailed by modernity is constantly redefining itself since it has already opened to the peasant (1830-1860) and soon includes the labour (1880-1890). Above all , the progressive emergence of the notion of decoration saps its foundations as well as it aims at robbing it of its precedence : at the end of the battle which is fought, history painting, reoriented towards its content (the topic, the story) experiences the loss of its formal raison d’être –style, plastic- fallen to decoration. At the time of the return of painting towards itself, towards its constituents, this comes down to definitely downgrading history painting in contemporary creation. The richness of these questionings about the beginning of the great genre is also conveyed, in practice, at forms level - what Matisse would have called the “sens majeur”, by a proliferation of conflicting stylistic trends : between 1860 and 1880, Bouguereau and Cabanel’s Raphaelesque classicism responds to the anti-classicism of Moreau and his spiritual sons, colourists or drawers ; whilst, from 1875 to 1900, the director-like realism developed by Gérôme, Laurens then by Rochegrosse and Tattegrain is systematically disavowed by a more elegiac (Henner), literary (Fantin-Latour) indeed mural trend (Martin). The final contributors to history painting already seem to have decorator souls - and it is as such that Martin will actually go down to posterity, but finally, these decorators of the early part of the XXth century could definitely be seen as the direct heirs of those who, a few decades earlier, were called “history painters” : in both cases one aspires to a synthesis and the Italian tradition of fresco painters is perpetuated. Full textThe artistic direction of the Académie de France à Rome and its artists in residence is placed under the patronage of the Academy of fine arts. The Academy determines and regulates the conditions of stay and the programme of annual work, the « envois de Rome ». This privilège is interrupted on the 13th November 1863 by a decree witch withdraws its guardianship to entrust it to the government. This rupture shows major crisis in fine arts education in France. even though the Academy recovers the totality of its prerogatives eight years later, from then on it has to take into account the demands that epoch imposes, oscillatin between tradition and modernity. It is in this perspective that the painters in residents and their « envois de Rome » position themselves. tributaries of the education and of the academic system of fine arts, laureates of the prix de Rome in painting are the symbol of the tradition. They are history painters and complete their artistic training in Italy, in Rome, in touch with the old masters of the Renaissance and the masterpiecies of antiquity. But they are also children of their century and for this reason they share the contemporary artistic issues . Full textThe socialist internationalism is a doctrine advocating the union and the solidarity between the peoples and beyond the borders. It is an identity marker of the socialism of the whole twentieth century, not only of its beginning. After the congress of Épinay in 1971, the new French Socialist Party (PS) supervised by François Mitterrand adheres to the Socialist International and announces its will to shape a "new internationalism". The French socialists lead their international policy following this slogan, for a pivotal decade marked by the pursuit of the Cold War, the acceleration of the economic globalization, the increasing internationalization of politics, and the conclusion of a common program with the French communist Party and the “Mouvement des Radicaux de Gauche”. After ten years of growing importance for the PS, F. Mitterrand is elected President of the French Republic in May 1981. Studying the international policy and the internationalism of the PS during this key decade enables to inform the political articulation of the national and international scales in a more globalized world. It is a way to understand the ideological and political turning point of the left under a new angle. To do so in this thesis, we analyze in a first part the nature and the place of the notion of internationalism in the culture, the doctrine and the identity of the PS. In a second part, we analyze the international practices of the PS, what characterizes its diplomacy on all the involved scales. By analyzing the vision of the world and the international action of a particular political group, this thesis finally tries to question the bases of global diplomacy and of a new global society at the time of the deepening of globalization
L'internazionalismo socialista, dottrina che esalta l'unione e la solidarietà fra i popoli, rappresenta una caratteristica identitaria del socialismo dell'inizio attraverso l’intero ventesimo secolo. A seguito della sua rifondazione al congresso di Épinay nel 1971, il nuovo Partito socialista francese (PS), sotto la direzione di François Mitterrand, aderisce all'Internazionale socialista ed annuncia di voler costruire un "nuovo internazionalismo". Sarà questo slogan che condurrà la sua politica internazionale durante un decennio contrassegnato dalla continuazione della Guerra fredda, l'accelerazione della mondializzazione economica, l'internazionalizzazione crescente della politica, e la conclusione di un programma comune col Partito comunista francese ed il Movimento dei radicali di sinistra. Sull’onda di un crescente consenso ingenerato nei dieci anni precedenti, F. Mitterrand viene eletto Presidente della Repubblica francese nel maggio del 1981. Studiare l’evoluzione della politica internazionale e dell'internazionalismo del PS durante questo decennio, significa analizzare l’interazione fra politiche nazionali ed internazionali in un contesto sempre più globalizzato ed osservare, sotto una prospettiva differente, il mutamento ideologico e politico della sinistra. Full textPierre-Adrien Pâris was born in Besancon in 1745 where he died in 1819. He had a most unusual career, being both an architect and an archaeologist. As was a brilliant architect and held concurrently a number of high offices including the menus-plaisirs. He was also a member of the architectural academy, architect for the musical academy and of the "economats". If his career ended with the revolution, it was not only due to circumstances: in fact he elected to leave Paris never to return, refused to build anything after the king's death, in January 1792. However, during the eighteen years he built or redesigned about fifty buildings. As an archeologist he devoted about fifteen years of his life, in particular from 1806, to studying the ancient monuments of Rome. His approach differed entirely from that of an antique dealers in that he drew, measured, analyzed and interpreted roman architecture using the critical and pragmatic methods of Desgodetz. Paradoxically, his most original contribution to architectural theory consisted in condemning the abuse of antique models

Full textWe know the city of Nemausus' rich Roman aristocracy through inscriptions and a few Roman writers. In the first century before the common Era, practors seems to be at the head the Confederation of Arecomic Volques includind about 30 independent towns. In the Caesarien Era, these towns received Latin law and Nemausus became a Latin colony ruled by quattuorviri. In the beginning of the Augustian Era, Nemausus was founded again ; most towns lost their independence and were then ruled by Nemausus. It could have been the period when the local political curriculum was modified. The elite seemed, at this time, to be comprised mostly of descendants of the former indigenous ruling aristocrats who received citizenship from great generals of the Roman republic. The most important and talented then entered the Roman Senate. The curriculum distinguished between members of the traditional indigenous elite who followed a career comprised of 3 or 4 steps and people from less prestigious families who could only become quaestores or aediles. The order of charges was strict only for those who were not equites and senators never undertook local offices. During the First century of the C. E. , the ruling elite became more diverse, even though descendants from the traditional aristocracy still dominated publics. Nemausus was at its zenith in the second century. Nearly no senator originated from the city at that time but equites had an unprecedented greatness and the city flourished on the province of Narbonensis. Members of the ruling elite were now mostly from new families. The elite from Nemausus increasingly focused on Narbonensis, while previously it was mostly focused on Rome. In the second century C. E. , members of the elite increased contributions towards Nemausus and other provincial cities, local senates decreeing honorofic rewards in exchange. Nemausus now attracted not only elites from Arecomic towns previously independent, but also elites from other cities. Beginning in the third century, we lose trace of this elite since they stopped using inscriptions/

Full textIn the wake of the political philosophy of Hannah Arendt and Claude Lefort, the present thesis seeks to demonstrate the continuance of political freedom within modern times. Through a critical analysis of the political practices of the “plebrians”, that is to say the “demos”, we attempt to establish the existence of a “politics of the people” that manifests itself through a practice of radical democracy. The thesis is made up of three parts. The first is a historical and philosophical answer to the question “Who are the plebeians?”. The second analyses the types of plebeian political organisations created during the French Revolution (the Parisian Sans-Culottes), the making of the English working class (the English Jacobins), and the Paris Commune of 1871 (the Communards). The third and last part examines the question of the “human bond” produced during the different plebeian political experiences. The interest of this thesis resides in the possibility of escaping two problematic intellectual operations that seem to be dominant today: on the one hand, the reduction of democracy to a set of institutions and procedures, and, on the other hand, the idea that modernity excludes the possibility of the political participation of the people. The “plebeian experience” is precisely that of a democratic practice that goes beyond institutional framework through the political affirmation of the plebs, an essential component of political communities too often seen as being apolitical. Plebeians are indeed “animal laborans” but they are also “zoon politikons”, to use two distinctions present in H. Arendt's thought

Full textThese pages have been written to explain a quaint aspect of French musical life under the reign of Louis XV. The hurdy-gurdy (Vielle à roue), which so far had been customarily an instrument used by beggars playing on streets corners (lira mendicorum), unexpectedly became the object of a sudden and powerful enthusiasm. From 1725 to 1765, with more than two hundred published pieces of music, it invaded the world of aristocracy and even conquered the royal family. In this study we are making an attempt to understand the reasons for that sudden and ephemeral passion. Our thesis is that the hurdy-gurdy became an instrument destined to serve the myth of Arcadia, commonly believed in during that period of time, by representing the image of the idealized countryman , a central character of the eighteenth century. In order to remove and purify it from any memory of its association with beggars and to make it become the Lyre of Apollo, the manufacture, the playing, the repertory of the hurdy-gurdy had to be completely transformed. The challenge was also to promote an idealized country life so as to make the hurdy-gurdy an instrument worthy to enter the Pantheon of the noble instruments of the aristocrats. . . As to the repertory, is it possible to say that the hurdy-gurdy is suitable for any high level music score? Or rather should we say that it can serve only the country repertory, which is then to be defined as music of a rustic and popular style, even though completely transformed by the influence of the Baroque

Full textThis work is about the pratice of th consolation letter in France during the first half of the seventeenth century. It is based on a comparative approach. The letter's composition follows the model of the Antiquity. The representations used by the writers draw a parallel between Early Modern France and Ancient Republican Rome. Letter is analyzed as a specific discourse and as a place of ancient Roman civilization "survival" (A. Warburg). The reconstitution of the practice that induces it and references to Antiquity it contains bring to the fore the caracteristics of the consolation letter's writing. Two hypothesis are checked in order to explain the obvious ubiquity of the Roman model : the first on concerns the historical transmission of the ancient inheritance which makes available such reference, the second on concerns the analogy existing between two social structures which makes its appropriation possible in the Early Modern society with some displacements of this model. Those alterations are made visible in the study of Roman consolation that ends this work

Full textToulouse had conserved its historical monuments between 1789 and 1913. The measures were devoted to the institutionalization and valorization of these monuments as local heritage. Not only the government and local authorities, but local scholars also committed themselves to this long project. These scholars had a significant role since the Revolutionary era in the foundation of the Museum of Toulouse (1793), organization of collections and conservation of historic monuments. Seen as the ‘second city’ of France or Europe, Toulouse should be known in the art world for its conservation practices. At the time of the organization of a national system of conservation of historical monuments, local scholars established the Archaeological Society of the South of France (1831). Their frequent conflicts with the government, local authorities and private owners of monuments started in the nineteenth century. But that situation did not prevent them from conserving some historic buildings, artworks and local memory, unlike the government, which intends to find national or universal interest in these monuments especially before the enactment of the law separating the Church and the State. With the progress of the institutionalization of cultural heritage, the valorization of local heritage reflected lesser universal interest in the art of Toulouse than local historic memory with local historic and art studies and their popular books and guides. It is even more inseparable from the birth of the idea of the ‘Rose City’, which symbolizes the characteristics of the architecture of Toulouse

Full textThe term queer, when used in the French language, does not echo the same way as in English –then referring to the anglo-saxon context of emergence. The main purpose of this study is to question the phenomena of cultural transfers of queer feminism – which appeared in the mid 1980s in the United States as both a subculture and a movement of critical thinking and activism- into the French context. This cultural translation resulted in pink activism which unlike its anglo saxon original model developed a policy based on strong identity affirmation, on both a collective and individual level. The goal was to beat the French integration system deeply imbued with republican ideals, where the drifts of an abstract universalism had produced blindness towards inequalities therefore the central issue investigated in this research is how this pink activism arose in a French context of opposition to identity-based politics.Moreover, the phenomena of reception and appropriation of queer feminism into the French context must be understood beyond the sole linguistic translation – in all their dimensions, cultural political, theoritical, artistic, etc. This study aims to understand the special features of this activism, from its sometimes uneasy integration among feminist and LGBT movements to its specific applications in terms of cultural and artistic practices, thus questioning the phenomenon of aestheticism of resistance techniques

Full textIn the archives of the royal justice system of the 14th and 15th centuries, madness was distinguished by two distinct judicial attributes: full incapacity in civil proceedings and the exception from penal responsibility in judicial matters. Dementia (furor) was summarily defined as an illness, stemming from the laws of nature, which deprived the subject of his ability to express any valid intent. Within this legal framework, whether or not conduct was deemed mad depended in large part on the specific circumstances of each law suit. The insanity plea could be used, for example, to acquit a crime, to nullify a contract or a testament as well as to prevent a relative from squandering the possessions of the family line by either having him barred and/or placed under guardianship. Those who were regarded as insane found themselves placed, primarily, under the authority of their relatives who thus deprived them of the ordinary privileges associated to adulthood and, should they prove dangerous, kept them at home. If customary law was generally used to arbitrate these situations, more and more appeals to the royal courts and to the opinions of legal scholars were made during this period. Even if the king did not pass judgment on such family matters, he did deputize certain mid-level actors, such as the burghers, to take these vulnerable subjects in their custody. In turn, these lawmen remained particularly attentive to appeal systematically to his sovereign authority

Full textFrom pink toys to countless representations of women in pink, “pink is for girls” is both fact and performative assertion — that is to say a self-fulfilling one. It is both a feminine symbol and associates everything it colours with femininity. Stemming from the desire to understand the origins and modalities of the association of pink with femininity, this thesis endeavours to follow the history of the colour since the first pink dyes, with a focus on the eighteenth century during which pink grew in popularity; a history of its symbolism linked — or not — to gender, its uses and misuses, its rejections and appropriations. At the intersection of gender studies and colour studies, this thesis highlights the ideologies underlying the use of pink, and their repercussions on both women and men, in terms of identity construction and social relations. Present throughout the visual arts, as well as in cinema, video games, fashion and marketing, pink participates in the process of gender categorisation through its aestheticisation and repetition of stereotypes. When worn by men, it connotes effeminacy, even homosexuality, confirming its feminine link through its symbolic incompatibility with the masculine. Militant attempts to reappropriate pink as an emblem by feminist, gay or queer communities have not managed to erase pink’s link to femininity, and paradoxically have reinforced it. Pink is thus revealed as a technology of gender, as defined by Teresa de Lauretis: its representation is its construction

Full textThe Holy Ghost Hospital of Rome was given to the Hospitaller Order of the Holy Ghost as central house in 1208. This order appeared in 1198 in Montpellier, founded by Gui probably younger brother of Guilhem VIII, who gave it its Institutions and developed it linked with the city trade and Guilhems alliances, Aragon and Burgundy, before he obtained from Innocent III the pontifical protection. As he could not obtain a church in Montpellier, the order was finally instituted in 1204 by Innocent III in the church of Saint Mary in Saxia of Rome, at once with union of both Montpellier's house and hospital that the pope founded there and then. Its rule, strongly influenced by Knights Hospitaller's own rule, instituted a general welcome, rounds in town searching for sick people and a mixed community, in a way of life recognized by Innocent III as regular but distinct from monks or canons proper rules. The partisans of the counts of Toulouse committed misuses on the pretext of the privileges, which brought houses disunity in 1217 and an arduous process of reorganization in the context of royal control advancement across southern France. The knowledge of expansion in the area of present France suffers from the lack of sources and from many false documents accumulated at instigation of Royal State during XVII and XVIII centuries. Theorder counted then only thirty-five hospitals and a few annexes. Its development has been jammed with conflicts between the Holy See and the kingdoms of France and Aragon, but remained significant in the Empire and actual in Plantagenet territories. Full textThe subject of the thesis is the discourses and practices relating to what is traditionally referred to as "Advice to prince". Such a topic is particularly vast and can be sectioned into three main themes: the study of the literature dealing with the art of governing; the analysis of the evolution of a prince’s entourage; the institutionalization of governmental and advisory mechanisms in parallel with the construction of a State. The aim of this thesis is to show that the transformations relating to the way of considering the advice to the prince in the 16th and 17th centuries are less part of a paradigmatic break than the extension of a process initiated since medieval times. It will therefore be a question of taking a step back from the traditional focus on Machiavelli’s thought in order to highlight the intellectual, social and political dynamics in the Middle Ages leading to the emergence of what we call “la conception directive du conseil”. This expression designates the idea that the exercise of government must be ordered in such a way that the prince’s will is not curbed by his advisers. The study of the practice of power shows that the royal state’s rise in the 13th century constitutes the starting point of this new approach. Machiavelli gave it a philosophical foundation in one of his chapters of The Prince, but other contemporary sources play an essential role in this history. Courtesan literature on one hand and utopian literature on the other have contributed in an ambivalent way to promoting this approach

Full textAs soon as he came to power, Bonaparte proposed to Pope Pius VII to re-establish Catholic worship in France, which was formalised by the Concordat of 1801. In exchange, he demanded, among other things, that all the bishops then recognised by Rome be removed from office and replaced by others appointed by him. Pius VII was in a quandary. He did not know whether he had the right to dismiss bishops. He decided to ask them to resign, but nearly half of them refused. The retention of these bishops in their seats would prevent the conclusion of the Concordat, which Pius VII considered a great good for the Church. It was with this good in mind that he came to believe that he had the authority to dismiss the non-resigning bishops. This work aims at establishing the history of this decision. Among other things, we used a lot of unpublished archives, the most important of which are published here in their entirety. The thesis seeks to explain how the Holy See succeeded, under the Restoration, in getting the entire episcopate to accept his decision. It details the issues at stake, by that time and after. Ultimately, this text supports the thesis that, even if Pius VII took an unprecedented decision, he acted in conformity with the whole canonical tradition. This decision can, moreover, still give theological, canonical and even practical lessons today. In some respects, it could even be a source of inspiration for the Holy See in its relations with certain countries

During the Second World War, the French surgeons discovered the great advances of the American surgery and understood the necessity of a good modern and professional anesthesia where intensive care was an important part of the speciality. Full textAn analysis of energy exchange in low levels of the atmosphere is made in heterogeneous agricultural lands, particulary about the influence of trees' structures on regional climatic modifications and on the making of microclimates. Successive scales are discussed from a tree throught forest canopies and to agricultural parcels surrounded of wind-breaks. At the level of a tree surfaces temperatures variations of fruit-trees are analysed in relation with height above the ground exposure, trunk colour and meteorological conditions. At the scale of forest canopies, particular attempt is made in analysis of wind speed, global radiation, air humidity and air temperature vertical profiles in two cedars'stands. Comparison of microclimate profiles measured simultaneously in open fields and inside cedars' canopies are also discussed. At the scale of agricultural parcels the microclimatic effects of wind-breaks in breton bocage and in low valley of the rhone are presented and explained. Special attention is made about aerodynamic and radiative effects of hedges on spaciotemporal variations of wind speed, air humidity and air temperature

Full textThere were many writings about absence without leave during revolutionary and imperial times, but a few only concerned the dramatic means employed by the government to contain it : garnisaires, colonnes mobiles, arrests of soldiers' parents. The first ones were soldiers placed at the refractaire's home with a view to forcing him to join the army. Their existence had not been legal until December 1812. But as their action was considered inefficient, they were soon helped by specialized troops dedicated to the same task. From 1810 onwards, troops are very active. As far as parents' arrests are concerned, they merely reveal the government's lack of control of this plague. Military authorities were as well not in a position to maintain a strict discipline inside the army. Absence without leave, especially desertion, can be seen as a result of this situation. The main impact concerns the rise of cases brought to trial. The fact that little literature deals with this movement enabled us to have a comprehensive view of procedures followed and sentences. This study focuses on the tenth military division, made up of the regions of Haute-Garonne, Ariège, Tarn-et-Garonne, Gers, Pyrenées Orientales, Aude and Hautes-Pyrénées

Full textThis study of Franco-Rumanian cultural relations between 1878 and 1965 is the fruit of research carried out in a number of archive centres (Paris, Nantes, Bucharest and Geneva). Its objective is to understand why France, in its weakened state after the 1870 war, was nevertheless considered by the Romanian elite as its „older sister‟. The author then examines how France used its position to institutionalise its cultural propaganda in „Grand Romania‟ (1919-1939), working alongside Romanians to spread its influence to the annexed territories, and how a cultural agreement was signed in March 1939 despite the hostile environment created by the fascist and Nazi regimes. Relations were unsettled during the final period (1940 to 1965), with the struggle to retain French works of art during the war, the promising exchanges in the immediate after-war years, and the termination of the agreement in 1948 by Soviet-controlled Romania. After a barren period a new agreement was signed in 1965. Throughout the period French culture was enriched by its contact with Romanian intellectuals and artists whose works were integrated into France‟s cultural heritage. The author uses family records to tell the story of her Romanian ancestor, the artist Mihai Simonidi (1872-1933). After arriving in France in 1892, he exhibited at the Universal Exhibition of 1900 and gained a certain reputation amongst the Paris and Bucharest elite. Well-known for his nudes, marine scenes and murals, some of which can still be seen in buildings in Bucharest, he also painted the portraits of famous French artists and writers and Romanian politicians of the time

Full textIn 1929, André Schaeffner, who h'âd at that time no direct experience in the field of ethnology, incorporated the Ethnographic Museum of the Trocadero to deal with, at first, musical instruments in the collections. He then founded a department that represents the first institutionalized he quickly called the musical ethnology. In 1961, the sixth section ("social sciences") of the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes organized the first school dedicated to an entire area became ethnomusicology. This periodization is part of a history of ethnomusicology in France that contributes to an examination of the concept of scientific discipline, without giving a strictly institutional definition and addressing for example the issue of disciplinary boundaries. The approach is to distinguish several modes of access to knowledge, some of which are also modes of knowledge production, resuming and expanding some conclusions of Jack Goody in The domestication of the savage mind (1977). The graphical mode means such as the practice of reading and writing, while the audiovisual mode returns to the making and listening to recordings. Various sources document these learning and production operations, including for example the archives of the Ethnographic Museum of the Trocadero and of the Museum of Man and also sound archives referenced in the text. The analyzes revealed a number of distinctions in ethnomusicology institutionalized or in a broader context, so that the attempt to distinguish between different modes of access to knowledge and to explore the evolution of their articulation is integrated into the larger project to define the historicity of an epistemology within its diversity

Full textHistory of property and casualty insurance in France In its infancy at the end of the Ancien Régime, forbidden under the Revolution, almost non-existent under the first Empire, property and casualty insurance reappeared under the Restoration to take off under the second Empire. The Revolution had admittedly forbidden insurance companies, but by making sacred the individual it developed the need for security and thus eventually the need for insurance. Humanist creators re-launched the idea of insurances by creating the first mutual insurance companies thereby bypassing the revolutionary ban. Property and casualty insurance built itself on the science of the lawyers and on jurisprudence. The legislator intervened later, in 1930, although insurance companies had continued to develop. Initially it was a question of protecting ones possessions against fire risks. The French society being then essentially agricultural, the insurances also covered the risk of hail and the mortality of the cattle. The industrialization of France contributed to the development of the contracts of professional and civil liability. The automobile insurance is an example. Today the business of insurance is a highly technical and complex activity with high financial stakes. In numerous cases it is compulsory. What were the reasons for forbidding insurance companies under the Revolution? How did the insurance business develop before the legislator intervened? What changed and what was the part of the government after the law of 1930? We shall try to answer these questions by this study

Full textThe Breton protestants (a few thousand) have exerted an unrecognized influence over the religions, economic and cultural life of the province. The late introduction of the Reformation has mainly touched the urban classes and first of all the nobility, on a high level. After a short peak about 1565, a score of communities survived until most of them were scatterrd by the civil wars which broke out later here than elsewhere. Soon after the edit de Nantes the congregations gathered again to regain their former importance. The Revolution was responsible for the quasi breaking up of those communities. Towards the late seventeenth century, Brittany became a road to refuge. Thousands of western huguenots croosed over the Channel Islands. Hundreds were arrested and judged by the high judicial court of Brittany. A century later, breton protestantism knew a sudden revival. Welsh missionaries driven by the celtic movement came and settled in breiz izel. . The ministers and their converts played a prominent part in the political and cultural life and formed the main part of the protestant presence to our days
