Abstract:

In un genere, come quello cavalleresco, nel quale l’esercizio d’armi è la manifestazione più insigne del valore del cavaliere, una parte consistente della narrazione si risolve in una serie di duelli. Il Furioso si struttura fin dall’esordio come radicalmente diverso rispetto all’Innamorato: se la sequela di duelli che punteggiano il poema boiardesco culminano, già nel libro primo, nel lungo e mortale duello tra Orlando e Agricane, Ariosto oppone una struttura basata sul differimento e l’elusione. Il saggio mira a evidenziare come nella prima parte del Furioso i duelli siano più giochi d’arme che battaglie sanguinose, e come, procedendo con la narrazione, il romanzo si incupisca e vada verso una fine tragica.

Il discorso sul ruolo della 'voce' del narratore nel racconto letterario è al centro della riflessione narratologica contemporanea. Ma già nel Cinquecento, e in particolare a proposito dei romanzi cavallereschi, sempre popolari ma ormai sospettati di infrangere le norme della poetica aristotelica, il problema dell'estensione e delle forme letterariamente accettabili per l'intervento del 'narratore', è vivacemente dibattuto. Alla discussione partecipano i letterati che ambiscono di inventare una nuova poetica del poema eroico e i teorici della letteratura più o meno impregnati dell'aristotelismo dominante.

Abstract:

Resum: Curial e Güelfa (Milà-Nàpols, ca. 1445-1448), novel·la cavalleresca escrita en català i atribuïble al gran camarlenc del Nàpols d’Alfons el Magnànim, Enyego d’Àvalos, conté una suggerent càrrega culturalista (mites ovidians tergiversats satíricament; teofanies i decorats neoplatònics; remissions explícites i/o implícites Cèsar, Macrobi, Plató, Apuleu...), que no resulta en absolut supèrflua i prescindible, com argumentà algun crític del segle passat. Al contrari: la manera d’evocar-hi els clàssics i de re-presentar-los no s’explica sense considerar els contactes de l’hipotètic escriptor amb l’humanisme llombard i napolità. D’altra banda, el repertori de clàssics greco-llatins documentats en la variada biblioteca personal del mateix D’Àvalos, la segona més rica del sud d’Itàlia, evidencia la coincidència de gustos i lectures d’aquest amb l’anònim del Curial i convida a ratificar la referida atribució. Paraules clau: Curial e Güelfa, Enyego d’Àvalos, literatura catalana medieval, novel·la cavalleresca, cavalleria humanística. Abstract: Curial e Güelfa (Milan-Naples, ca. 1445-1448), a chivalric romance written in Catalan an attributable to the great chamberlain in the Naples of Alfonso the Magnanimous, Enyego/Inico d’Àvalos, contains a suggestive cultural burden (Ovid’s myths satirically distorted; theophanies and Neo-platonic sets; explicit and/or implicit references to Caesar, Macrobius, Plato, Apuleius...), which is not absolutely superfluous nor dispensable, as some critic from the last century explained. Just the opposite: the way to recall the classics and re-present them cannot be explained without considering the contacts of the hypothetical writer with the Lombard and Neapolitan Humanism. On the other hand, the catalogue of Greek-Latin classics recorded in the varied personal library of D’Àvalos himself, the second richest in the south of Italy, demonstrates the coincidence of his taste and readings with the anonymous writer of the Curial and invites us to ratify the aforementioned attribution. Abstract:

The paper contains some partial findings of a comparative research on the chivalry romance Buovo d’Antona as printed in Bologna and in Venice in the 1480s in a number of different, yet quite similar one to another, incunables; and its ottava rima adaptation in yiddish-taytsh, made by Elye Bokher (Elia Levita) in Padua around 1507, and then published as Bovo-Buch in Isny, Württemberg, as late as 1541. Respectively, the narratives implicitly deliver two different ideologies, meant as consequent sets of socially shared convictions about the good living. In particular, the place of women in society and the family, or better said, the male representation thereof, substantially differs in the Yiddish adaptation compared to the Venetian original.

Abstract:

Il “Sacro Catino”, oggetto esotico giunto a Genova intorno al 1100, riceve diverse identificazioni tra XII e XIII secolo: da manufatto meraviglioso a santo Graal, reliquia della Passione. Analizzando le identificazioni del catino alla luce del dialogo con il mondo letterario, questo saggio indaga la trasformazione di temi esclusivi e complessi in elementi della memoria cittadina. L’articolo si concentra dapprima sull’appropriazione del motivo del Graal, e mostra come proprio il trattamento visuale che il tema riceve nei romanzi arturiani fa di questa letteratura il veicolo ideale per identificare il catino con il Graal e visualizzare così dogmi e misteri eucaristici. La seconda parte prende in esame il luogo in cui l’associazione catino-Graal viene fissata, la Chronicadell’arcivescovo di Genova Jacopo da Varagine, e descrive come quest’opera sia all’origine della costruzione di una scenografia monumentale dedicata ai miti di fondazione genovesi che trova posto nella cattedrale e alla quale partecipa anche il catino. Il catino è dunque coinvolto in un rapporto di circolarità tra letteratura tradizionalmente destinata a pochi e monumentalizzazione dei temi letterari e al contempo è testimonianza visuale e tangibile di strategie che sfruttano la gradazione di piani culturali high e low per la costruzione della memoria collettiva.

A good title should speak for itself. And a subtitle, even better, center the subject is meant to treat, especially in a work as a doctoral thesis. Why, in fact, this is not a text that seeks a commercial purpose, but the systematic development of a research, covering an area of study that has tried to analyze the course of at least three years. The temptation, however, to "mine" the beautiful construct that seals the most fascinating among the truths of geometry and apply it to an idea, certainly not new, but it has stayed with me constantly during those years, was too strong . With the clear desire not to bore with explanations unnecessarily sophisticated, and without too overestimate this "idea", I can briefly say that, imagining the whole history of Italian literature, from its very first steps early Middle Ages, as a straight line, and the advent the press as the point which divides it into two segments of different lengths of time, it seemed to find in matter "of arms and of love", which accompanied closely, more than any other literary form, the development of social our literature, contributing decisively to spread in all strata of the population, with no difference of "caste", the constant that has allowed the proportion "divine" in the past, popular and aristocratic set, which was in danger of being forgotten and placed between the antiquities at the end of the sixteenth century, and the modern, through the insistent requests of what by now had become the "public" of the readers, could not and would not do without the poems of chivalry for a long time... Abstract:

La tesi studia il complesso tematico delle architetture meravigliose come topos di enorme fortuna nella narrativa cavalleresca spagnola del secolo XVI. Il corpus testuale preso in esame è costituito da 22 opere appartenenti al genere dei libros de caballerías pubblicate fra il 1508 ed il 1588. Lo studio degli elementi di continuità all’interno del tema ha evidenziato la presenza di strutture “standard” (su differenti livelli, dalla concrezione dello spazio meraviglioso alle sue funzioni nella narrazione, dall’impostazione delle sequenze narrative “minime” alla loro combinazione e disposizione nell’intreccio) e di deviazioni che mettono in risalto il processo evolutivo del genere. Il primo volume si chiude con una Appendice che raccoglie, in ordine alfabetico, le schede riassuntive di 147 architetture meravigliose presenti nel corpus esaminato. Il secondo volume è costituito da un’antologia testuale riguardante una selezione di 15 architetture meravigliose particolarmente interessanti per la ricerca intrapresa.
The thesis studies the overall theme of the magic building as a narrative topos of enormous fortune in the Spanish chivalric novel of the sixteenth century. The textual corpus examined consists of 22 works belonging to the literary genre of the libros de caballerías published between 1508 and 1588. The study of the elements of continuity within the theme revealed the presence of 'standard' structures on different levels, from the concretion of the magic space to its functions in the text, from the setting of the narrative sequences to their combination and arrangement in the plot. The identification of deviations from the standard models has highlighted some sensitive elements involved in the evolution of the genre. The first volume closes with an appendix which contains, in alphabetical order, the summaries of 147 magic buildings belonging to the set of texts examined. The second volume is an anthology composed of a selection of 15 magic buildings of particular interest to the research undertaken.

Il contributo analizza il riuso dell’Orlando furioso nella narrativa contemporanea, prendendo le mosse dall’esperienza tardo-ottocentesca di Italo Svevo, autore di una commedia incompiuta dedicata ad Ariosto governatore, e attraversando le esperienze letterarie di due grandi romanzieri italiani del secondo dopoguerra, ossia Italo Calvino e Beppe Fenoglio. Nell’ultimo capitolo viene indagata “la persistenza del Furioso tramite i contributi di Stefano Jossa, tramite l’allestimento recente di due mostre dedicate proprio alla ricezione di Ariosto nell’arte odierna e tramite una moltitudine di rielaborazioni narrative e teatrali, concentrate soprattutto sul personaggio di Angelica e su quello di Orlando. L’obiettivo è rilevare il doppio binario dell’influenza poeta ferrarese, che è diventato un modello sia sul piano tematico (grazie a una densa serie di situazioni narrative, di temi, di idee imperniate di un relativismo che torna prepotentemente in auge dopo le lacerazioni prodotte dall’epoca buia dei totalitarismi), sia sul piano stilistico e formale (in virtù dell’uso programmatico delle tecniche di sospensione, di differimento e di ripresa). Superato l’impasse della rigida interpretazione crociana, Ariosto può finalmente diventare il maestro indiscusso di una letteratura fantastica e ironica, ma mai disimpegnata o superficiale.
The present study analyzes the Orlando Furioso’s reuse in contemporary literature. It starts from the late XIX century works of Italo Svevo, author of an uncompleted comedy dedicated to Ariosto the Governor. Then, it goes through the literary experiences of two great Italian novelists of the second postwar, namely Italo Calvino and Beppe Fenoglio. The last chapter focuses on “the persistence of the Furioso” by analyzing Stefano Jossa’s studies, two recent exhibitions dedicated precisely to Ariosto’s reception in contemporary art and several narrative and theatrical reworking of Ariosto’s masterpiece, which are mainly dedicated to the characters of Angelica and Orlando. The work is aimed in detecting the double influence produced by Ludovico Ariosto, who has become a model both for the matter (due to a dense series of narrative situations, themes and ideas centered on a relativism which strongly affirms itself after the lacerations produced by the recent dark totalitarianisms) and for the style (due to a programmatic use of narrative techniques, such as suspension, deferment and resume). Overcoming the impasse of Benedetto Croce’s rigid interpretation, Ariosto can finally become the undisputed master of a fantastic and ironic literature, which has not to be considered disengaged or unconcerned.
