McDonald, Nicola. The Wonder of Middle English Romance. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198795148.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
Marvels and the marvellous are synonymous with medieval romance. Yet scholars often express disappointment at the wonders they find in Middle English romance. This chapter asks a simple question: how does Middle English romance understand wonder? and how, in turn, does our understanding of wonder in Middle English romance help us better comprehend the genre and what it can achieve? The chapter is made up of two parts. The first seeks to articulate a theory of wonder specific to English romance. Its focus is lexical, attentive to what the sources themselves identify as a wonder or as productive of wonderment; and its remit is wide, drawing evidence from across the whole genre. The second turns to a single romance, Octovian Imperator, in order to demonstrate how wonder puts into question the very certainties that Octovian and romances like it are conventionally understood to instantiate. Wonder has been credited as the beginning of philosophy, not something we normally associate with Middle English romance. This chapter argues, however, that what the particularity of wonder in the English romances highlights is the genre’s fundamentally interrogative mode.

Otter, Monika. Music by Tristan. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198795148.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter considers the interplay between medieval Tristan romances and Tristan songs, music closely associated with the romances and indeed attributed to the character Tristan himself. In particular, the chapter looks at Marie de France’s lai ‘Chevrefoil’, and the anonymous thirteenth-century lai ‘Kievrefuel’, which is quite distinct from Marie’s narrative poem but evokes it in some particulars. The multiple relationships between different Tristan poems and Tristan tunes, intertwined and mutually evoking each other, allows us to ‘think [of] Romance’ as a larger, modular experience, a cultural game that can transcend an individual text and generate potentially limitless further texts. It also suggests a twelfth-century way of ‘thinking [with] Romance’ in a playful, creative way that both erases and accentuates the fictionality of the romance world and its characters.

Little, Katherine C., and Nicola McDonald, eds. Thinking Medieval Romance. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198795148.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This volume consists of eleven essays on medieval romance. It argues as a whole that the romance genre is one of the most important sites for medieval thinking about topics that were elsewhere unthinkable, including things taken for granted, threatening to the status quo, and actively repressed. The essays focus mainly on Old French, Anglo-Norman, and Middle English romances, and they are organized to highlight: the nature of romance thinking, through wonders and ‘unthinking’; what romance thinks, whether kinship or crusades; romance’s relationship with other genres and forms, including historiography, biblical exegesis, and music; and the usefulness of the generic term romance.

Publicover, Laurence. Romancing the Mediterranean. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198806813.003.0002.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the ways in which romance literature presents geographical space. To provide a foundation for the chapters that follow, it focuses on a number of classical, medieval, and early modern romances and romance-inflected texts that present the Mediterranean, asking how romance as a mode of writing interacts with the historical realities of the Mediterranean world. In exploring different forms of romance geography, the chapter proffers a distinction between the ‘Hellenistic’ mode, which stresses the Mediterranean’s status as a site of productive interaction between overlapping cultures, and the ‘chivalric’ mode, which presents it as a site of conflict; additionally, the chapter discusses the ways in which romance literature constructs a dynamic between the inner worlds of its protagonists and the outer worlds through which they travel.
