Stories engage a form of virtual play. Though they incorporate language and abstractions, stories engage many of the same biological systems and produce many of the same anatomical responses as simpler games. Like peek-a-boo or tickle play, stories stage dangerous or unpleasant scenarios in a controlled setting. In this way, they help develop cognitive strategies to tolerate, manage, and even enjoy uncertainty. One means is by inspiring confidence in difficult situations by tactical self-distraction. Another is to reframe negative or uncertain situations as learning opportunities, that is, to ascribe meaning to them. While both strategies are useful, each has limitations. In William Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale, a king succumbs to the desire to make meaning where there is none, and nearly ruins himself in a self-composed tragedy. His friend restores his confidence and enables a happy ending—but only by deceiving him. This deception is benign, but the heroine of Samuel Richardson’s Clarissa is nearly ruined by her abductor’s confidence game. Her “happy ending” is made possible only by reframing her rape and death as redemptive transfiguration—which, as many of her readers suggest, is a dubious affair. The hero of Herman Melville’s The Confidence-Man spends the first half of the novel eliciting his companions’ confidence in order to swindle them, and the second half trying to inspire himself with the same confidence. The novel ends with an ominous impasse: one must trust, but one ought not to. For Samuel Beckett, this impasse is productive. In his middle novels, thought itself emerges from the interplay of spontaneous bouts of irrational confidence and distortive, after-the-fact impositions of spurious meaning. Stories create (illusory) identities, elicit (dubious) hopes, and reinforce (false) assumptions in order to help us cope with the agonies of anticipation and loss, and to transform misfortune, accident, and misery into reward, retribution, and meaning—that is, in a comedy of trauma.

French émigré literature is both under-explored and under-valued by scholars. This thesis aims to rehabilitate the female émigré novel within its nineteenth-century landscape, putting to the fore its originality and pertinent contribution to contemporary movements such as Romanticism and the realist novel. Recent work has unearthed the émigré-specific way of narrating the Revolution; yet no clear definition has yet been established. This thesis defines what the émigré novel is based on the dichotomy for novelists of having experienced the exile first-hand or not. The memoirs and novels of three émigré noblewomen, Madame de Boigne, de Souza and de Duras, who all spent a decade in London during the 1790s, are scrutinized for this purpose. Three angles of research frame this comparative analysis: the search for the genre of the émigré novel, or how several genres intertwine in this ‘sub-genre’; trauma of the emigration as the core characteristic of the novels; and gender questions, or how the émigrée is using her stay in Britain as inspiration to convey more genuine relationships for post-revolutionary French society. This thesis goes against the idea that to interpret a novel based on the life of the author is reductive: instead it rediscovers the creative potential of the autobiographical which the émigrées chose to inject in their fiction works. Likewise, it establishes that the trauma of the Revolution and exile is visible in the selected émigré novels in the way it is camouflaged, enhanced and fictionalised, which constitutes their originality and distinguishes them from non-authentic émigré fictions. Finally this thesis considers the gender modernisation asked for in the plots, based on the fact that the selected novelists had enjoyed more freedom of action, uprooted from French social etiquette and within British society.

The life of the controversial Irish nationalist Roger David Casement, who was sentenced to death for high treason by the British Crown, has inspired writers to produce works of various literary genres: prose, poetry, drama and critical essays. This doctoral dissertation aims to investigate, under the light of trauma theory as suggested chiefly, but not solely by Cathy Caruth, Ron Eyerman and Dominick La Capra, the ways in which the figure of Roger Casement can be associated with traumatic events that have sealed Anglo-Irish relations. Thus, I have selected works that deal with Casements Life as he acts both for and against the trauma inflicted by imperialism respectively as a Victorian hero in Arthur Conan Doyles The Lost World (1912) and as an oblique presence in the 1916 Easter Rebellion in Jamie ONeills At Swim, Two Boys (2001); the trauma surrounding his Trial and the discovery of the homosexual Black Diaries that culminated in his hanging through his representation as a whole man in Mario Vargas Llosas The Dream of the Celt and in Patrick Masons The Dreaming of Roger Casement (2010); and finally, the trauma that persists unresolved in his Afterlife, as a ghost in David Rudkins Cries from Casement as his Bones are Brought to Dublin and as traumatic memory in the Annabel Davis-Goffs The Foxs Walk. As a result, we have found that the representation of Roger Casement in these works, although in various ways, is a metaphor for the traumatic process itself: an embodiment of the disjunction of temporality, [and] the surfacing of the past in the presente (Whitehead) as his presence continues to haunt the story of the transatlantic world.<br>A vida do controverso nacionalista irlandês Roger David Casement, condenado à morte por alta traição pela Coroa Britânica, inspirou a escrita obras de diversos gêneros literários: prosa, poesia, teatro e ensaios críticos. Esta tese de doutorado tem como objetivo investigar, sob a luz da teoria do trauma, tal como sugerido principalmente, mas não exclusivamente por Cathy Caruth, Ron Eyerman e Dominick La Capra, diferentes maneiras pelas quais a figura de Roger Casement pode ser associada a eventos traumáticos que selaram as relações Anglo-irlandesas. Dessa forma, foram selecionados trabalhos que lidam com a Vida de Casement, como ele age a favor e contra o trauma causado pelo imperialismo como herói vitoriano em The Lost World (1910) de Arthur Conan Doyle e como uma presença oblíqua na Revolta da Páscoa de 1916 em At Swim, Two Boys de (2001) Jamie ONeill; o trauma em torno de seu Julgamento e da descoberta dos Black Diaries que o levaram à forca por meio de sua representação como um homem completo em The Dream of the Celt (2012) de Mario Vargas Llosa e em The Dreaming of Roger Casement (2012) de Patrick Mason e, finalmente, o trauma não resolvido que persiste em sua Vida após a Morte, como um fantasma em Cries from Casement as his Bones are Brought to Dublin (1973) e como memória traumática em The Foxs Walk de Annabel Davis-Goff. Verificamos que as representações de Roger Casement nessas obras, ainda que de formas distintas, representam uma metáfora do processo traumático em si: Uma personificação da disjunção da temporalidade, [e] o surgimento do passado no presente (Whitehead), visto que sua presença continua a assombrar a história do mundo transatlântico.

Em pleno século XXI, assistimos ao surgimento do romance A Mercy (2008), da norte-americana Toni Morrison, que invoca o passado de povos que estiveram historicamente às margens da cultura nacional norte-americana. A Mercy retorna a história da colonização anglo-saxõnica do século XVII, para contar, a partir dos viés do trauma, a história de Florens, que ainda menina é oferecida pela mãe, no lugar de seu irmão menor, para pagamento de dívidas do dono da plantação. O romance marca o envolvimento por parte de Toni Morrison em um projeto estético-político que visa resgatar a história das relações raciais nos Estados Unidos pelo viés do trauma. Este estudo apontacomo, a partir do redirecionamento do foco para a interioridade da experiência histórica - a história como trauma -, Morrison possibilita um encontro diferenciado com um passado historicamente silenciado, através de estratégias textuais que mobilizam não apenas a razão, a percepção crítica do leitor, mas que transformam o ato da leitura numa experiência vivida revelando o potencial da literatura para transformar as relações humanas.<br>Toni Morrison’s latest novel A Mercy (2008), evokes the past of peoples that were historically confined to the margins of the American culture. Morrison goes back to the period of the Anglo-Saxon colonization in the 17th century to tell the story of Florens, who is offered by her mother as the payment of a debt by the plantation owner. Florens’ story is narrated from the point of view of trauma, an aspect that highliths Toni Morrison’s commitment to a political-aesthetical project to recover the history of racial relations in the United States from an inner perspective. This thesis shows how Morrison’s text allows for a different encounter with a historically silenced past, focusing on the interiority of historical experience – i.e., on history as a trauma. Through multiple textual strategies, Morrison’s novel mobilize not only the reader’s critical perception but transform the act of reading into a living experience, one that can reveal the power of literature to change human relations.

The research was inspired by the necessity of given voice to ancestors which live inside my body ? especially my maternal grandmother, whose past had been marked by the overwhelming trauma of World War II. Considering the emptiness of a missing past, I formulate the following question: How is it possible to take on pre-birth memories? To do so, I deal with multiple verbal tenses and narrative voices in the fictional part in order to demonstrate gaps or to heal the wounds by filling in them imaginative spaces. Due to its synaesthetic feature, the critical essay gathers historical documents, photographs, films, diaries? fragments, family texts, as well as conversations with patients which inspired the development of the novel. Furthermore, I carried out a thorough affective study on the vacuum that may last between generations with the purpose of stablishing not only a bond, but also a contact.<br>Esta disserta??o ? constru?da em dois volumes: o romance A casa das bolsas e o ensaio cr?ticote?rico sobre a cria??o art?stica, Forros (In)Feridos. No romance O Deus das Pequenas Coisas (1997) de Arundhati Roy, as transgressões são atitudes que se configuram como abundantes na narrativa, sendo realizadas em sua maioria pelos personagens marginalizados. A fim de obter uma compreensão mais profunda das razões que impulsionam tanto a narrativa quanto os personagens a cometer estas infrações, elas foram divididas em três níveis neste trabalho: pós-colonial, sociopolítico e afetivo. São aqui analisadas as transgressões dos personagens Velutha, Ammu, Estha, Rahel e Sophie. Os níveis das transgressões, suas motivações e os conceitos de trauma individual e cultural são colocados em contraponto para aprofundar a análise da narrativa do romance. No nível pós- colonial, são empregados conceitos de Panikkar (1969), Festino (2007), Forter (2014) e Outka (2011), enquanto Sztompka (2000, 2004), Alexander (2000) e Joseph (2010) permeiam o nível sociopolítico, finalizando o nível afetivo com Caruth (1995), Bose (1998) e Almeida (2002). A hipótese deste trabalho é de que Roy foca nas transgressões para, em primeiro lugar, criticar determinados elementos da sociedade indiana, e para provocar reações em seus leitores. Esta é sustentada através da citação de seus ensaios e discursos na análise do romance.<br>In The God of Small Things (1997), from Arundhati Roy, the transgressions are substantial throughout the narrative, as the majority of them are performed by marginalized characters. In order to comprehend more deeply the reasons which propel the narrative and the characters to such violations, they were divided into three levels in this work: post-colonial, socio-political and affective. The transgressions analyzed here are the ones performed by the characters Velutha, Ammu, Estha, Rahel and Sophie. The levels of the transgressions, their motivations and the concepts of individual and cultural trauma are all correlated so that the intentions of the narrative are elucidated. In the post-colonial level, the concepts of Panikkar (1969), Festino (2007), Forter (2014) and Outka (2011) are applied, whereas Sztompka (2000, 2004), Alexander (2000) and Joseph (2010) are used for the socio-political level; the affective level is observed with notions from Caruth (1995), Bose (1998) and Almeida (2002). The hypothesis of this work is that Roy focuses on the transgressions of minor characters not only to criticize particular elements from the Indian society but also to trigger the reaction of the readers. This is supported by her essays and speeches quoted along the analysis of the novel.

Nossa interpretação parte do diálogo Crátilo, de Platão, do qual destacamos a figura do legislador ou artífice , homem sábio que, munido de um conhecimento específico, estaria habilitado a nomear baseado nas características daquilo que nomeia. Nesse sentido, considerando o autor de obras literárias o artífice que nomeia seus personagens e escolhe, também, influenciado pelo nome, o espaço onde se desenvolverá a ação narrativa, buscamos realizar uma interpretação dos onomásticos do romance, através da etimologia e das conotações que cada nome possibilita, tentando, assim, uma aproximação dos sentidos que Machado quisera atribuir-lhes. Para tanto, contamos com a crítica literária que se debruçou sobre tal aspecto da obra, tendo como maior contribuição Helen Caldwell, que dedicou um capítulo de O Otelo brasileiro de Machado de Assis unicamente à análise onomástica de Dom Casmurro. A autora, através da mesma obra, abriu caminho para a crítica machadiana que mesclamos ao nosso trabalho formada por autores como John Gledson, Roberto Schwarz e Silviano Santiago, que veem na narrativa memorialística de Bento Santiago a intenção de fazer do leitor seu aliado na acusação de adultério contra Capitu e apoiados na escrita desse autor ficcional, bem como em sua formação política e social.

After going through this recapitulation of the novelistic tradition involving the passage from adolescence to adulthood in the life of a woman, there is a comparative study of those novels and Marriage Plot, by Jeffrey Eugenides. This novel is seen as a modern parody, following Linda Hutcheon‘s Theory of Parody.<br>Este trabalho analisa a tradição anglo-americana dos romances de casamento com foco em três obras de períodos diferentes: Orgulho e Preconceito, de Jane Austen, Jane Eyre, de Charlotte Brontë, e The House of Mirth, de Edith Wharton. Após esta recaptulação da tradição romanesca de obras voltadas para a passagem da adolescência para a vida adulta da mulher, é feito um estudo comparativo com o romance A trama do casamento, de Jeffrey Eugenides. A obra é lida como uma paródia moderna, seguindo os conceitos de Linda Hutcheon.

This PhD thesis examines the ‘working through’ of traumatic memories of the Holocaust and representations of Romani cultural identity in autobiographical writing by Romanies in Germany and Austria. In writing their memories in German, these Romani writers ended the ‘muteness’ previously surrounding their own experiences of persecution in the Third Reich and demanded an end to the official silence regarding the Romani Holocaust in their home countries. The thesis aims to explore how the writing of these narratives works to create a space for Romani memories within German language written tradition and to assert a more positive Romani identity and space for this identity in their homelands. Further, it aims to demonstrate that, in the struggle to create this safe space, their texts also reveal insecurity and landscapes that are not free from threat. The thesis also addresses the broad question of whether or not the shift from oral to written tradition in order to represent experiences of the Holocaust will result in a continuation of Romani writing in Germany and Austria. The thesis begins by examining the first Romani accounts of Holocaust memories published in Germany (1985) and Austria (1988) and ends with more recent narratives published in 2006 (Germany) and 2007 (Austria). In chapters one and two on writing by Philomena Franz and Ceija Stojka, I focus on their pioneering texts as assertions of space for Romani identity within their homelands; I analyse how these authors work through their traumatic memories by narrating their experiences and by identifying the landscapes of Germany and Austria as Heimat. In chapter 3, I continue to explore themes of Heimat and identity in Alfred Lessing and Karl Stojka ’s accounts which, while working through their own traumatic memories of the Third Reich, struggle with the loss of Romani cultural identity in their homelands. In chapter four, I address the generational memory of the Holocaust in Otto Rosenberg’s account of his experiences in the concentration camps and his daughter Marianne Rosenberg’s recent autobiography. In chapter 5, I will examine the presence of the ‘threat of Auschwitz’ in Stefan Horvath’s writing, in which he remembers the attack on a Romani settlement in 1995 which killed his son and three other Romanies in Oberwart, Austria. In all of these chapters, attention will also be given to the editorial construction of these texts as well as their reception. Throughout the thesis, I take a comparative approach, referring to similarities and differences between the works of these authors.

The object of analysis are the follow in novels: O arquipélago da insónia (2008), Que cavalos são aqueles que fazem sombra no mar? (2009), Sôbolos rios que vão (2010), Comissão das lágrimas (2011) and Não é meia noite quem quer (2012). The study shows how the childhood theme is fictionally revisited through the memory of a usually traumatic past. Thus, it starts a reflection turning to the other novels of the author, which comprise a period of 33 years (from 1979 to 2012). To sustain the hypothesis that memory is a constitutive element in the narratives of António Lobo Antunes, the study examines how the characters rearticulate the past through childhood memory and, several times, before the supremacy of death. It analyzes the reconstruction (and narrative) of previous moments adopting the contributions of Paul Ricoeur, Sigmund Freud, Márcio Seligmann-Silva and Walter Benjamin.<br>Esta tese dedica-se ao estudo do espaço da infância na narrativa do escritor português António Lobo Antunes, tomando como objeto de análise os seguintes romances: O arquipélago da insónia (2008), Que cavalos são aqueles que fazem sombra no mar? (2009), Sôbolos rios que vão (2010), Comissão das lágrimas (2011) e Não é meia noite quem quer (2012). Tenciona-se mostrar como a temática da infância é revisitada ficcionalmente a partir da memória de um passado quase sempre traumático. Desta maneira, inicia uma reflexão recorrendo aos demais romances do autor que compreendem um período de 33 anos (de 1979 a 2012). Para fundamentar a hipótese de que a memória é um elemento constitutivo nas narrativas antunianas, busca-se perceber como as personagens rearticulam o passado através da memória da infância e, muitas vezes, diante da eminência da morte. Procura-se analisar a reconstrução (e narração) de momentos precedentes partindo das contribuições de Paul Ricoeur, Sigmund Freud, Márcio Seligmann-Silva e Walter Benjamin.

Os desdobramentos da obra de Chico Buarque evidenciam sua vasta experiência com diversas manifestações artísticas: música, teatro e ficção. Sua obra ficcional exibe um entrelaçamento de diversas mídias, artísticas e não-artísticas, dentre as quais a TV, a fotografia, a música e especialmente o cinema, revelando uma linguagem fortemente cinematográfica. Este estudo analisa aspectos recorrentes nos romances Estorvo, Benjamim e Budapeste, tais como a relação com outras artes (em especial o cinema) e a questão do duplo, articulada à errância dos personagens e, principalmente, ao elemento estrangeiro. A configuração do estrangeiro, nesses romances, apresenta-se em três sentidos: aquele que está fora de sua pátria, a condição errante dos personagens e a sua inadequação ao mundo. São analisadas também as adaptações cinematográficas de Estorvo, de Ruy Guerra, e Benjamim, de Monique Gardenberg, entendidas como hipertextos que transformam o texto buarqueano, através de operações de recortes, acréscimos, supressões e deslocamentos, dentre outras

Lo studio analizza due romanzi brasiliani degli anni Duemila, K. Relato de uma busca, di Bernardo Kucinski (2011) e Não falei, di Beatriz Bracher (2004), che raccolgono la memoria dei traumi delle vittime della dittatura militare che ha segnato il Brasile dal 1964 al 1985. L’analisi si snoda dalla problematizzazione del panorama della memoria collettiva della dittatura militare nel Brasile contemporaneo, dal punto di vista della giustizia di transizione e da quello culturale e letterario. Se confrontato con altri paesi del Cono Sud, il Brasile si presenta come un paese sui generis nella collettivizzazione dei traumi legati alle esperienze dittatoriali che hanno accomunato la loro storia nel secondo Novecento. L’“eccezione brasiliana” è messa in luce presentando in parallelo la traiettoria storica dittatoriale e la produzione romanzesca di resistenza al regime, e mettendo in relazione le specificità della transizione alla democrazia con quelle del trattamento della memoria dittatoriale nel romanzo. Il romanzo degli anni Duemila viene poi contestualizzato nel paesaggio mnemonico brasiliano e messo in relazione con l’insufficienza delle politiche della memoria e con il sussistere di politiche di silenziamento e oblio che presentano forti elementi di continuità l’epoca dittatoriale. In un panorama letterario che pare riprendere interesse nel raccogliere il testimone dell’esperienza delle vittime del regime, i due romanzi che compongono il corpus sono stati scelti come rappresentativi della forza con cui il testo letterario può inserirsi nella costruzione della memoria collettiva, intervenendo performativamente in un precario paesaggio mnemonico e problematizzandolo narrativamente. L’ipotesi è quella di analizzare entrambi i testi come gesti narrativi, narr(azioni), pensandoli nei termini di una «literature of testimony», poiché raccolgono il testimone delle vittime di specifici traumi legati alla violenza dittatoriale – la sparizione forzata e la tortura – e ne problematizzano la dicibilità. Relato de uma busca, il gesto individuato è quello della “restituzione”, come possibilità di parziale ricostituzione di una memoria traumatica radicata nella catastrofe della sparizione forzata. L’analisi lo inquadra come il primo tentativo di inscrivere la storia silenziata del desaparecimento in Brasile attraverso una denuncia esplicita dei suoi meccanismi e la loro narrativizzazione attraverso la figura del protagonista. In Não falei, l’analisi riconosce un atto di “vocalizzazione”, come capacità di problematizzare il silenzio legato alla condizione del sopravvissuto alla tortura e di vocalizzarlo, attraverso la narrazione e la vasta indagine delle reticenze che questo ritorno alla parola comporta. Il romanzo di Bracher è analizzato a partire dalla dicotomia falar/não falar, per mettere in luce come, nel testo, il problema della testimonianza, della dicibilità del trauma, del paradosso della sopravvivenza, siano declinati attraverso la sfera della voce. Lo studio esamina infine le specifiche modalità di frammentazione letteraria, gli elementi di discontinuità e la metariflessione sul linguaggio e il genere letterario che i due romanzi presentano, interpretandoli nell’alveo di quel sapere precario a cui la scrittura del trauma risponde.

In this thesis the subject of grief and healing are examined in three novels by the Japanese writers Hiromi Kawakami, Ruth Ozeki and Banana Yoshimoto. The method for the analysis is based on psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’ Five Stages of Grief theory, but in the analysis of these novels, it became clear that the grief/healing-stages for the protagonists are not expressed in the exact same manner as the non-fictional patients of Kübler-Ross’ study. The analysis shows that this is partly due to the fact that the narratives take place in Japan and that there is a clear intervention where the writers have used magical interruptions in their realistic portrayal of bereavement, to help the protagonists begin to recover. These magical interruptions, this thesis states, are the use of magical realism, especially connected to the long history of Japanese folklore and myth. As a result, this thesis presents a modified model of analysis, which also reflects how the protagonists filled with bereavement and sorrow can be helped to heal and recover by the interruption of fantastic and magical events. Through this study it has become clear that not only is the need for healing significant but the need for family, relationships and a sense of belonging are just as important. To re-connect with their lost loved ones, whomever they may be, these characters must cross through the magical interventions within the narratives and dare to reach out to the people around them, strengthened by their loss and trauma, rather than fearing relationships with others due to previous trauma and grief.

The object of analysis are the follow in novels: O arquip?lago da ins?nia (2008), Que cavalos s?o aqueles que fazem sombra no mar? (2009), S?bolos rios que v?o (2010), Comiss?o das l?grimas (2011) and N?o ? meia noite quem quer (2012). The study shows how the childhood theme is fictionally revisited through the memory of a usually traumatic past. Thus, it starts a reflection turning to the other novels of the author, which comprise a period of 33 years (from 1979 to 2012). To sustain the hypothesis that memory is a constitutive element in the narratives of Ant?nio Lobo Antunes, the study examines how the characters rearticulate the past through childhood memory and, several times, before the supremacy of death. It analyzes the reconstruction (and narrative) of previous moments adopting the contributions of Paul Ricoeur, Sigmund Freud, M?rcio Seligmann-Silva and Walter Benjamin.<br>Esta tese dedica-se ao estudo do espa?o da inf?ncia na narrativa do escritor portugu?s Ant?nio Lobo Antunes, tomando como objeto de an?lise os seguintes romances: O arquip?lago da ins?nia (2008), Que cavalos s?o aqueles que fazem sombra no mar? La tesi mira a esaminare la genesi del Calloandro di Giovan Ambrogio Marini nel contesto del ricco e dinamico contesto sociale e culturale della Genova della prima metà del XVII secolo. Le pagine prefattorie premesse alle varie edizioni dell’opera rappresentano un contributo importante per la definizione di un genere la cui diffusione non fu accompagnata, in Italia, da uno studio teorico e sistemico. Dopo una ricognizione delle fonti sulla biografia e la produzione letteraria dell’autore, nel primo capitolo viene proposta una sintesi dettagliata della trama del romanzo che illumina gli elementi fondamentali del testo e del genere. Nel secondo, si prosegue con l’analisi della struttura narrativa dell’opera, soffermando l’attenzione sulle tecniche di costruzione dell’intreccio. Quindi, si procede all’individuazione nel romanzo greco d’epoca ellenistica e nella tradizione comica i modelli letterari che influenzarono in modo più significativo la fantasia del Marini nella composizione del Calloandro. Introductory pages to the novel’s various editions represent an important contribution about the novel’s developement in Italy, where the success of the genre wasn’t followed by a theoric and systemic study. After a research on the sources concerning the author’s biography and literary production, the first chapter presents a detailed synthesis of the novel’s plot which fixes some fundamental elements of this kind of work. The second chapter is about the novel’s narrative structure focusing on the techniques of the plot’s building. Then the third chapter describes literary models which influenced Marini’s work, in particular the Greek novels of Hellenism and the comic tradition. The fourth chapter analyses the characters' system: there are some subtle and unforeseeable characters, among many generic and insubstantial figures, that make Calloandro a unpredictable novel in which the psychological realism, typical of Ligurian novels, is combined with the taste of adventure, typical of the Venetian novels.

De nombreuses études ont tenté de définir les formes d’écritures relatives à l’expérience du soi face aux atrocités de la guerre. En revanche, la recherche testimoniale et littéraire ignore l’idée inverse : comment témoigner d’une guerre que l’on n’a pas vécue ? Cette question non investie jusqu’à présent soulève aujourd’hui des enjeux éthiques et politiques importants. L’occultation de la guerre menée par le monde occidental est essentielle pour la compréhension de la situation politique dont témoignent de nombreux auteurs contemporains. Au cœur de leurs récits de guerre, des écrivains contemporains tels que Jean Rouaud, Jean-Yves Jouannais, Laurent Mauvignier et François Bon livrent des témoignages sur des guerres auxquelles ils n’ont pas pris part. Ils le font à la première personne et au présent, tout en entrant dans les moindres détails des faits racontés. Ces écrivains attestent d’événements relatifs aux guerres passées comme aux conflits actuels. Ces témoignages ne s’appuient exclusivement ni sur la littérature scientifique ou professionnelle ni sur les récits partagés par des témoins directs de la guerre. Ainsi, le fait que ces auteurs n’aient pas assisté à la guerre leur permet de livrer des témoignages pionniers sur les situations actuelles de conflit comme sur les guerres historiques. Pour répondre à cette question de recherche, cette thèse analyse le statut du témoignage dans l’œuvre de Jean Rouaud, écrivain pionnier de cette tendance littéraire, et en retrace l’évolution<br>The present thesis defines a new model of testimony written by contemporary authorswho were not physically present in the conflicts their writings describe in first-person narrative and the present tense. This literary corpus constitutes a watershed in the history of modern testimonial literature, which ascribes absolute authority as war witnesses to ‘the men who were there’ in the conflict zone during the war. Using first-person narratives, intimate language, and detailed writing, contemporary writers such as Jean Rouaud, Pierre Bergounioux, François Bon, Jean-Yves Jouannais, Pierre Michon, and Annie Ernaux witness events from the two world wars and from current conflict zones. They do not provide testimonies from a perspective external to war; they do not base their writings on scientific or professional literature nor rely on survivors’ ‘first-hand testimonies’. Further, in their writings, traveling to distant conflict zones is not a prerequisite to become an eyewitness to the injustices that occur there. Instead, for these writers, the intergenerational consequences of theworld wars and the involvement of France in conflicts around the world make them witnesses of those conflicts. The fact that these authors never participated directly in a war constitutes a new approach to the ‘eyewitness’ that is valuable for understanding contemporary reality. In an attempt to trace the nature of this tendency in its literary, ethical, and political aspects, the present study is devoted to a lateral reading of the corpus of Jean Rouaud, the pioneering and leading writer of this tendency

<p>This dissertation examines a series of novels by Aminata Zaaria, Ken Bugul, Gaston-Paul Effa, Boubacar Boris Diop and Yolande Mukagasana. At the heart of my study is a problem that haunts much literary production and literary criticism about post-colonial Francophone African writing: the layers of distance and misunderstanding that often exist between readers and writers. Several of the authors in this study express frustration at the limited expectations that readers have of them, complaining that readers outside of the continent continue to read their novels solely in order to gain a grasp of socio-political "realities" of Africa. I propose a return to a select group of author's largely semi-autobiographical texts in order to better understand each writer's individual literary projects within the interdisciplinary framework of trauma studies. Interviews that I conducted with Senegalese and Cameroonian publishing directors, psychologists, sociologists and authors themselves offer an analysis of these texts within the context of broader social debates. </p><p> My first chapter focuses on Zaaria's La Nuit est tombée sur Dakar (2004) and Bugul's Le Baobab Fou (1983) and Cendres et Braises (1995) in order to examine intergenerational Senegalese semi-autobiographical representations of prostitution. My study ultimately finds that neither Senegalese society nor Zaaria and Bugul's narratives evidence healing through writing. Rather, both present literature as a "default" chosen because the authors found no one with whom they could initially share their stories face-to-face. Chapter Two hones in on Bugul's relationship with her mother, a painful theme revisited from one end of Bugul's semi-autobiographical oeuvre (Le Baobab Fou, 1982) to the other (De l'autre côté du regard, 2002). Chapter Three examines the trauma of parental loss in Gaston-Paul Effa's semi-autobiographical works, from Tout ce bleu (1996) to a more recent novel (Nous, les enfants de la tradition, 2008) in order to examine the evolution of Effa's personal identity quest and his extensive self-analysis over time in light of the author's permanent exile in France. My fourth chapter begins with a study of genocide survivor Yolande Mukagasana's recent narrative entitled N'aie pas peur de savoir (1999) in order to examine author/reader relationships in light of the often inconceivable trauma of genocide. I then move on to consider the ethics of speaking "for" genocide survivors by analyzing the well-known Senegalese author Boubacar Boris Diop's Murambi, le livre des ossements (2000) and the related Fest'Africa project. I end Chapter Four with a critique of Etoke's Melancholia africana: l'indéspensable dépassement de la condition noire (2010) in order to question whether or not sweeping theories of the various traumas experienced by members of Africa and its diaspora are in fact helpful in every context. Finally, I end my study with Effa's Voici le dernier jour du monde, which exhibits the interplay between autobiography, biography, fiction and the issue of literary violence. </p><p> I ultimately argue that a major difference between the "talking cure" of psychoanalysis and the process of seeking healing through literary narratives involves the question of audience. In the case of Sub-Saharan African literature, the author/reader relationship does not necessarily provide a safe space akin to the doctor/patient model in Freud's "talking cure." Therefore, I ultimately call for a closer analysis of the myriad ways by which authors are seeking healing and answers outside the realm of literature.</p><br>Dissertation

Barely has literature failed to inspire the concept of trauma. Nor has trauma been a trivial cogitation for literature. This reciprocation, which is ingrained in the ineludible alliance between the two, has given rise to innumerable masterpieces throughout the history of literature from classic works of Homer to the modernist works of Woolf, Faulkner, and Hemingway. Nonetheless, trauma studies were not formulated in literature until two decades ago, which shapes an uncanny question mark never to be erased. Cormac McCarthy’s traumatic footprint in literature is as inerasable as the very same question mark, insofar as most, if not all, of his canon has been indelibly imbued with the notion of trauma. His characters seem to have a uniquely innovative bearing of traumatization, which is rarely found with that weight in other analogous works of literature. Chigurh, called the “prophet of destruction” by McCarthy himself in No Country for Old Men (2005), punches a hole into the forehead of his victims, leaving his vile mark metaphorically on the decaying civilization. Ballard in Child of God (1973), in what is termed as necrophilia, makes love to his victims, while judge Holden in Blood Meridian (1985) kills children, collects scalps, and never dies. This traumatic road eventually boils down to The Road (2006) in which everything comes to naught: an ashen apocalypse. Lending themselves to widespread critical acclaim, the novels No Country for Old Men and The Road did not fail to lend themselves to silver screen translations, which were indebted to the directorial efforts of the Coen brothers and John Hillcoat in 2007 and 2009, respectively. The narratives, textually or visually, are densely informed, if not formed, by the notion of trauma, which consolidates not only the bond between the two novels but also the traumatic trajectory from the novels to the films. It is thus through a thoroughgoing analysis of trauma and its footprints that a mastery of the inner workings, mysteries, and thematics of the aforementioned narratives will come to life, which is what the present dissertation aspires to achieve. Composed of three chapters, the foregoing dissertation sets out to initially establish the theoretical framework for trauma notions in chapter one whose application will shape the arguments of chapters two and three for the novels/films No Country for Old Men and The Road, respectively.<br>A literatura raramente deixa de servir de inspiração a um qualquer conceito de trauma. De igual forma, o trauma não é uma cogitação trivial para a literatura. Esta reciprocidade, que está enraizada na ineludível aliança entre os dois, deu origem a inúmeras obras-primas ao longo da história da literatura, desde obras clássicas de Homero até às obras modernistas de Woolf, Faulkner e Hemingway. Não obstante, os estudos de trauma começaram a surgir com maior incidência na literatura nas duas últimas décadas, o que dá forma a um ponto de interrogação inquietante, que nunca é apagado. A pegada traumática de Cormac McCarthy na literatura é tão inextinguível como esse mesmo ponto de interrogação, na medida em que a maioria, se não a totalidade, do seu cânone está indelevelmente imbuída da noção de trauma. As suas personagens parecem ter uma ligação única e inovadora com o trauma, que raramente é encontrado com este peso noutras obras análogas da literatura. Chigurh, apelidado de “profeta da destruição” pelo próprio McCarthy em No Country for Old Men (2005), faz um buraco na testa das suas vítimas, deixando metaforicamente a sua marca vil na civilização decadente. Tendo sido aclamados pela crítica em geral, os livros No Country for Old Men e The Road foram igualmente levados ao grande ecrã através dos esforços de realização dos irmãos Coen e de John Hillcoat, em 2007 e 2009, respectivamente. Estas narrativas, textuais e visuais, são densamente informadas, se não formadas, pela noção de trauma, que consolida não só a ligação entre os dois romances, mas também a trajetória traumática desde os romances até aos filmes. É, portanto, através de uma análise aprofundada do trauma e das suas pegadas que um domínio sobre o funcionamento interior, os mistérios e as temáticas das narrativas acima mencionadas ganhará vida, que é o que a presente dissertação aspira a alcançar. O primeiro capítulo deste estudo visa fornecer um repertório teórico do discurso do trauma sobre o qual se basearão os argumentos subsequentes dos capítulos dois e três. Assim, este capítulo fará uma primeira incursão num domínio de definição de trauma, a fim de assegurar inicialmente um nicho para a compreensão primária do conceito de trauma. Como é expectável, esta linha de incursões incluirá as correntes de pensamento de Cathy Caruth, conhecida como um das principais nomes dos estudos de trauma e que introduziu inicialmente a estética do trauma no reino da literatura através seu livro seminal Unclaimed Experience: Trauma, Narrative and History (1996). Baseado fortemente no pensamento freudiano, a análise do discurso de Caruth sobre o trauma terá recurso a fundamentos como a essência espectral do trauma e a sua não-referencialidade ou temporalidade perdida. Revelando o misterioso ângulo de flashbacks, o capítulo abordará as posições críticas de pensadores de trauma como Hustvedt, para não mencionar a famosa noção de “compulsão de repetição”, cuja criação é creditada a Freud. A “realidade” de Lacan, como um argumento exegético pertinente, será aqui adicionalmente discutida, abordando a natureza inassimilável do encontro traumático. A premente visualidade do trauma e o seu assoberbante mutismo daí resultante relembram o pensamento crítico de Hartman, que se baseia no “Boy of Winander” de Wordsworth. Uma das maiores contribuições para a poética do trauma é a de LaCapra, cujo ensaio seminal “Trauma, Absence, Loss” (1999) tem reunido um grande número de seguidores. A dicotomia “ausência/perda” de LaCapra será um prelúdio para a dicotomia “reagir/resolver”, que virá igualmente à luz neste capítulo. A crítica testemunhal, com o seu profundo enfoque nas formas como as vítimas de trauma podem desenvolver um mecanismo de libertação dos seus traumas é outro constituinte deste capítulo, que englobará nomes como Felman (1991), Marder (2006), Laub e Podell (1995). Além disso, o capítulo lançará luz sobre a noção de atraso, ligando-o aos nomes de pensadores como Freud (1939), Caruth (1996) e Laplanche (2001). Em desacordo com o pensamento clássico sobre o trauma, encontra-se a nova escola do trauma, através das vozes de Balaev (2008, 2014) e Belau (2001), que proporcionam novas perspectivas tais como crescimento, renascimento e resiliência no discurso do trauma. Injustamente, o trauma planeia a sua incursão de igual forma na psique imaculada das crianças, advindo daí o conceito de trauma infantil, que irá formular outra grande corrente analítica neste capítulo. Esta corrente dependerá principalmente dos pensamentos críticos de Reviere (1996) e Shengold (1989), que teorizaram abundantemente sobre este tema. “O Estranhamente Familiar”, como uma noção difundida em muitas obras literárias, e particularmente no cânone de McCarthy, raramente se distanciou da estética do trauma. Dito de outra forma, o laço inabalável entre o “estranhamente familiar” freudiano e a ficção do trauma tem sido um reduto do qual muitas obras-primas inigualáveis têm nascido. Informando o próprio epicentro do discurso do “estranhamente familiar”, a morte e a repetição parecem falhar às vítimas do trauma em todas as frentes possíveis. Estes elementos assombrosos que alimentam os tropos traumáticos serão a linha argumentativa na qual se basearão a maioria dos argumentos teóricos deste capítulo. O segundo capítulo da dissertação terá como objetivo trazer à luz os diálogos entre o quadro teórico previamente construído no capítulo um e os traumas que moldaram a narrativa de No Country for Old Men. Uma boa parte dos argumentos de trauma deste capítulo gira em torno de Chigurh, o “profeta da destruição”, e de como este, enquanto fantasma do trauma, tanto caça como atormenta as demais personagens de uma forma brutal e robótica, usando uma assombrosa arma de abater gado que faz um buraco na testa das suas vítimas. Alicerces do trauma tão diversos como a espectralidade, a crítica testemunhal, a ausência/perda, o trauma intergeracional, o crescimento e “o estranhamente familiar” irão emergir na fase crítica dos nossos argumentos. Tendo orquestrado os diálogos esteticamente significantes entre o mundo do trauma e No Country for Old Men de McCarthy, este capítulo dirigir-se-á para o mundo visual dos irmãos Coen. A análise visual, devo enfatizar, será apenas seletiva ao longo de todo o capítulo, na medida em que apenas investigará os momentos traumáticos previamente elucidados no texto de McCarthy. Numa linha semelhante, o terceiro capítulo da presente dissertação visará o modo exegético relacional entre os tropos do trauma e a obra The Road de McCarthy. Centrada num apocalipse temporalmente vago, a narrativa parece ser propensa ao tropo de trauma de não-referencialidade ou à temporalidade perdida. Temporalidade à parte, McCarthy faz com que todos os traumas, canibalismo e infanticídio, ocorram a uma personagem que é ainda uma criança, daí a adequação das discussões sobre traumas infantis. Além disso, o capítulo irá lançar luz sobre o testemunho e os seus constituintes, principalmente ouvir e falar, que parecem funcionar melhor que nunca através dos espaços traumáticos da narrativa apocalíptica. Todos os esforços do par de colectores não visam senão a sobrevivência, que é outro tropo do trauma, daí a formulação de outra parte deste capítulo à luz deste conceito. Todos estes momentos textuais de trauma se prestarão a uma análise visual, tendo como âmago os esforços de realização de John Hillcoat. Ao colocar os fundamentos teóricos para o discurso sobre o trauma no primeiro capítulo e ao moldar a dialética que se segue entre este capítulo e os particulares tropos do trauma das narrativas do corpus nos capítulos dois e três, a atual dissertação não terá por objetivo apenas desvendar os mistérios, os códigos e a temática que se encontram sob a superfície de No Country for Old Men e The Road de McCarthy, mas tentará também descobrir a própria estética visual, em momentos traumáticos seletivos, através da qual os irmãos Coen e Hillcoat fixaram as suas assinaturas nestes filmes.

<p>This study presents a new reading of the <i>Perlesvaus</i>, an anonymous thirteenth-century Old French Grail romance bizarrely structured around an Arthurian restaging of the battle between the Old and the New Law. I construe this hyper-violent, phantasmagorical text as a profoundly significant work of “trauma fiction” encoding a hitherto-unrecognized crisis of religious ethics and identity in Western Europe in the first half of the thirteenth century. Combining literary and historical analysis and drawing on current trends in trauma studies, I tie what I term the “deranged discourse” of the <i>Perlesvaus</i> to the brutal onset of internal crusading in southern France (the papal-sponsored Albigensian Crusade, 1209-29), making the case that the collective trauma staged in its narrative perturbations was a contributing factor in the well-documented worsening of Western European antisemitism during this period. One key analytical construct I develop is the “doppelganger Jew”—personified in the <i>Perlesvaus</i> by its schizoid authority figure, Josephus, a conflation of first Christian priest and first-century Romano-Jewish historian—who functions as an uncanny embodiment of powerful, unacknowledged fears that Christians were losing their spiritual moorings and reverting into reviled, scapegoated Jews. Traces of this collective trauma are explored in other contemporary texts, and one chapter examines how the fourteenth-century <i>Book of John Mandeville</i> revives similar fears of collapsing Judeo-Christian identity and unfolds under the sign of the doppelganger Jew.</p>

Dissertação de Mestrado em Estudos Portugueses Interdisciplinares apresentada à Universidade Aberta<br>Resumo - O presente trabalho incide simultaneamente sobre a figura histórica do rei D. Pedro I e sobre o seu reflexo enquanto personagem literária. Num primeiro momento, tentamos reconstruir uma imagem deste monarca, necessariamente parcelar, focando a sua dupla faceta histórica e mítica. Fazemo-lo a partir dos documentos oficiais do seu reinado e da escrita historiográfica dos séculos seguintes. Analisamos ainda o modo como a literatura se apropriou dos dados históricos, acrescentando-lhes uma dimensão mítica. Numa segunda fase, após a necessária definição do corpus narrativo no qual incide o nosso estudo (Inês de Portugal, de João Aguiar; A Trança de Inês, de Rosa Lobato de Faria; A Rainha Morta e o Rei Saudade, de António Cândido Franco), reflectimos brevemente sobre os autores e o modo como abordam o mito inesiano, bem como sobre as características gerais dos três romances escolhidos e a respectiva apropriação das fontes históricas. Procedemos ainda a uma breve abordagem dos conceitos de romance histórico e de pós-modernismo, particularmente no que diz respeito à situação desse subgénero narrativo e à difusão das mencionadas tendências literárias em Portugal, nas décadas finais do século XX. Centrando-nos definitivamente na personagem D. Pedro, efectuamos a necessária identificação das diversas teorias relativas a classificação, caracterização e construção da personagem narrativa, elementos essenciais para o subsequente estudo prático. Para tal, analisamos comparativamente os três romances sob diversos ângulos, sempre com o objectivo de estabelecer relações de semelhança ou oposição entre as entidades literárias construídas pelos três autores. Assim, para além de algumas tipologias classificativas inerentes à personagem narrativa (e, especialmente, de cariz histórico), são sucessivamente abordadas diferentes áreas que consideramos relevantes, como a descrição física, o discurso privilegiado, a actuação da personagem, as suas relações com os outros, as ligações que estabelece a nível metafísico ou com construções hipodiegéticas, a interacção com os espaços e com os tempos narrativos e, finalmente, a própria concepção da entidade narradora. Apontamos, enfim, as conclusões possíveis, tanto no que se refere aos traços comuns aos romances sob análise, como em relação aos aspectos que indicam diferenças significativas nas distintas concepções da personagem central que decidimos estudar<br>Abstract - The present work focuses simultaneously the historical image of king D. Pedro I of Portugal and its reflex as a literary character. In a first stage, we try to reconstruct an image of this monarch, necessarily partial, examining his double-sided, historical and mythic quality. We do so both from the official documents of his reign and the historiography of the following centuries. We also analyse the way literature took hold of the historical facts, adding to them a mythic dimension. In a second phase, after the necessary definition of the narrative corpus towards which we direct our study (Inês de Portugal, by João Aguiar; A Trança de Inês, by Rosa Lobato de Faria; A Rainha Morta e o Rei Saudade, by António Cândido Franco), we briefly reflect upon its authors and the way they explore the myth of Pedro and Inês de Castro, as well as upon the general characteristics of the three chosen novels and their appropriation of the historical sources. We also carry out a quick analysis on the concepts of historical novel and of post-modernism, especially in what concerns the situation of this narrative gender and the diffusion of the above mentioned literary tendencies in Portugal, over the final decades of the twentieth century. Definitively centred on the character D. Pedro, we necessarily begin by identifying the various theories related to classification, characterization and construction of narrative character, essential elements to the subsequent practical work, to which we analyse comparatively the three novels through different angles, always trying to establish relations of similarity or opposition between the literary entities built by the three authors. Thus, after referring to some typologic classifications inherent to narrative characters (especially historical ones), we successively analyse various topics we consider relevant, such as physical description, discourse characteristics, character actions, relations to others, metaphysical or hypodiegetic connections established, interactions with narrative space and time and, finally, the concept of narrator itself. We finally point out the possible conclusions, both as to the aspects we found similar in the novels under analysis and to the significant differences which indicate distinct conceptions of the central character we chose to study

Non c’è dubbio sul fatto che la RAI, dal 1954 a oggi, abbia contribuito in misura considerevole a determinare la fisionomia dell’immaginario collettivo e dell’identità culturale dell’Italia. Si tratta di un assunto che, a distanza di più di sessant’anni, resta sempre di grande attualità, per chi si occupa della questione televisiva (e non solo). Ma a differenza di quanto avveniva nel passato, quando la tv appariva più preoccupata dei reali interessi dei cittadini, oggi essa sembra rispondere prevalentemente a dinamiche di mercato, in grado di alterarne la funzione etica e sociale. E nonostante il livello di istruzione e di benessere economico si siano evidentemente alzati, in questi ultimi anni si è assistito a programmi di sempre più bassa qualità e in controtendenza a un incremento del potere modellante e suggestivo sull’immaginario dei telespettatori. C’è di più: l’interesse verso la tv ha coinvolto anche gli storici dell’epoca contemporanea, i quali hanno iniziato a prendere coscienza che le produzioni audiovisive sono strumenti imprescindibili per la ricerca. Se si pensa ad esempio al ‹‹boom economico›› del Paese, negli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta, non si può non considerare che la tv, insieme agli altri media, abbia contributo a raccontare e allo stesso tempo ad accelerare i progressi economici e sociali di quell’epoca. Partendo, dunque, dal presupposto che la televisione da sempre esercita un potere decisivo sulla collettività, si è scelto di concentrarsi sulla fase meno indagata della sua storia, quella della televisione delle origini: ‹‹migliore›› perché senza competitor, ‹‹autentica›› perché incontestabile e soprattutto ‹‹pedagogica›› perché è di istruzione e di formazione che, quell’Italia appena uscita dalla guerra, aveva più urgenza. La storia della televisione italiana inizia il 3 gennaio 1954, con la nascita del servizio pubblico televisivo e insieme di un mezzo che, di lì a poco, avrebbe completamente rivoluzionato la società italiana, trasformandola in una civiltà di massa. Si accorciano le distanze territoriali e insieme culturali e la società inizia a omologarsi nei gusti, poi nei consumi e infine nel pensiero. Il punto d’arrivo si colloca negli anni Settanta, quando ha termine il monopolio della RAI, che fino a quel momento era stato visto come il garante del pluralismo culturale. La RAI passa dal controllo governativo a quello parlamentare, mentre si assiste al boom delle televisioni private e alla necessità della tv di Stato di stare al passo con la concorrenza, attraverso una produzione diversa da quella degli esordi. Dunque cambia la tv, come pure cambia la sua funzione e la forma mentis di chi ne detiene le redini. Ne risulta un’indagine trasversale, che passa nel mezzo di molteplici discipline che afferiscono alla materia televisiva e che non evita di porsi quelle domande scomode, necessarie tuttavia a comprendere la verità sugli artefici della prima RAI e sui loro obiettivi. E allora: qual era il valore attribuito alla televisione degli esordi? Era davvero uno strumento pedagogico? Sulla base di quali presupposti? Chi scriveva i palinsesti di quegli anni? Chi e perché sceglieva temi e format televisivi? Chi decideva, in ultima analisi, la forma da dare all’identità culturale nazionale attraverso questo nuovo apparecchio? Il metodo di ricerca si è articolato su tre distinte fasi di lavoro. In primis si è puntato a individuare e raccogliere bibliografia, sitografia, studi e materiale bibliografico reperibile a livello nazionale e internazionale sulla storia della televisione italiana e sulla sua programmazione nel primo ventennio. In particolare sono stati presi in esame i programmi scolastici ed educativi (Telescuola, Non è mai troppo tardi), la Tv dei Ragazzi e i programmi divulgativi culturali. Successivamente si è resa necessaria una definizione degli elementi per l’analisi dei programmi presi in esame, operazione resa possibile grazie alla consultazione del Catalogo multimediale della Rai. In questa seconda parte della ricerca si è voluto puntare i riflettori su ‹‹L’Approdo››, la storia, le peculiarità e gli obiettivi di quella che a ragione potrebbe essere definita una vera e propria impresa culturale, declinata in tutte le sue forme: radiofonica, di rivista cartacea e televisiva. In ultimo, sulla base dell’analisi dei materiali d’archivio, sono state realizzate interviste e ricerche all’interno dei palazzi della Rai per constatare la fondatezza e l’attendibilità dell’ipotesi relativa agli obiettivi educativi sottesi ai format televisivi presi in esame. Le conclusioni di questa ricerca hanno portato a sostenere che la tv delle origini, con tutti i suoi limiti, era uno strumento pedagogico e di coesione sociale. E se ciò appare come un aspetto ampiamente verificabile, oltreché evidente, qualora si voglia prendere in esame la televisione scolastica ed educativa di quegli anni, meno scontato risulta invece dimostrarlo se si decide – come si è fatto – di prendere in esame un programma divulgativo culturale come ‹‹L’Approdo››, che rientra nell’esperienza televisiva definita di ‹‹educazione permanente››. Ripercorrere la storia della trasmissione culturale più longeva della tv italiana degli esordi, per avvalorarne la funzione educativa, si è rivelata una strada interessante da battere, per quanto innegabilmente controversa, proprio per il principale intento insito nella trasmissione: diffondere la cultura ‹‹alta›› a milioni di telespettatori che erano praticamente digiuni della materia. Un obiettivo che alla fine della disamina si è rivelato centrato, grazie alla qualità della trasmissione, al suo autorevole e prestigioso groupe d'intellectuels, agli ascolti registrati dal ‹‹Servizio Opinioni›› e alla potenzialità divulgativa e penetrante della tv, nel suo saper trasmettere qualunque tematica, anche quelle artistiche e letterarie. Dunque se la prima conclusione di questo studio induce a considerare che la tv del primo ventennio era pedagogica, la seconda è che ‹‹L’Approdo›› tv di questa televisione fu un’espressione felice. ‹‹L’Approdo›› conserva ancora oggi un fascino innegabile, non foss’altro per la tenacia con la quale i letterati difesero l’idea stessa della cultura classica dal trionfo lento e inesorabile della società mediatica. Come pure appare ammirevole e lungimirante il tentativo, mai azzardato prima, di far incontrare la cultura con i nuovi media. Si potrebbe dire che ‹‹L’Approdo›› oggi rappresenti una rubrica del passato di inimmaginata modernità e, nel contempo, una memoria storica, lunga più di trent’anni, che proietta nel futuro la ricerca storica grazie al suo repertorio eccezionale di immagini e fatti che parlano di arte, di letteratura, di cultura, di editoria e di società e che raccontano il nostro Paese e la sua identità culturale, la stessa che la televisione da sempre contribuisce a riflettere e a delineare. Lo studio è partito da un’accurata analisi delle fonti, focalizzando l’attenzione, in primo luogo, sugli ‹‹Annuari della Rai›› (che contengono le Relazioni del Cda Rai, le Relazioni del Collegio Sindacale, i Bilanci dell’Esercizio e gli Estratti del Verbale dell’Assemblea Ordinaria). Altre fonti prese in esame sono gli stati gli opuscoli di ‹‹Servizio Opinioni››, le pubblicazioni relative a studi e ricerche in materia di televisione e pedagogia e le riviste edite dalla Rai Eri: ‹‹Radiocorriere tv››, ‹‹L’Approdo Letterario››, ‹‹Notizie Rai››, ‹‹La nostra RAI››, ‹‹Video››. Negli ultimi anni la Rai ha messo a disposizione del pubblico una cospicua varietà di video trasmessi dalle origini a oggi (www.techeaperte.it): si tratta del Catalogo Multimediale della Rai, che si è rivelato fondamentale al fine della realizzazione della presente ricerca. Altre sedi indispensabili per la realizzazione di questa ricerca si sono rivelate le due Biblioteche romane della Rai di Viale Mazzini e di via Teulada.
