Hummel, Clément. "Modernités du roman scientifique chez J.-H. Rosny aîné." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Normandie, 2023. http://www.theses.fr/2023NORMC033.
J.-H. Rosny aîné (1856-1940) is the author of a large literary work, including novels, short stories, articles published in the press and in scientific journals. Literary history remembers his involvement in the dispute against Émile Zola's naturalism, his role in the Goncourt Academy, of which he was a founding member and President, the maturity he brought to prehistoric narratives through his seminal novel La Guerre du feu and numerous texts that now position him as one of the pioneers of science fiction in France. The interest of that author lies not so much in what he foreshadowed but rather in the literary modernity he both theorized and practiced at a time when the art of the novel was in crisis in France, and scientific storytelling struggled to move beyond the model set by Jules Verne's Voyages Extraordinaires. This work particularly analyzes the multifaceted connections that this versatile author maintained with the sciences, which held a “poetic passion” for him and to which he declared himself a reformer. While he produced various essays on scientific philosophy and presented some of his reflections to the Academy of Sciences, it’s through the medium of the novel that he invents both modern science and literature
Weber, Anne-Gaëlle. "Le roman de conquête scientifique au XIXe siècle en France, en Angleterre et aux États-Unis." Paris 4, 2001. http://www.theses.fr/2001PA040094.
The " Novel of Scientific Conquest " is born, during the nineteenth century, from the encounter of the fiction of adventure with the discurse of natural history. Our claim is to measure the influence of the narrative of travel on the formal structure of the fiction of adventure. We first establish that an exemplary narrative can be found out of the extreme variety of " Travels " characteristic of the nineteenth century ; the scientific one, which rules have been defined by the naturalists of the Museum of Paris. Alexandre Dumas, Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, Jules Verne, Robert Louis Stevenson and Joseph Conrad have all written "Travels", and transposed their forms to fiction. While calling their works" romance or novel of adventure ", they have suggested that this gender was not only composed of lineary texts with elementary plots but also by descriptive narratives
Cominetti, Philippe. "L'inspiration scientifique dans le roman post-naturaliste : du naturalisme français à la littérature japonaise du premier XXème siècle." Bordeaux 3, 2005. http://www.theses.fr/2005BOR30005.
By considering the way scientific elements are integrated in naturalist fiction, as well as in post-naturalist novels, this dissertation aims at defining the features of a textual norm ((the so-called "realistic-code")from the double point of view of poetics and ideology. With French texts as a starting point and a Japanese corpus (1895-1960) considered as a case study, transmission of French naturalism (Zola's theoretical discourse, and anatomical imagination) and development of scientific inspiration in the Japanse context of tremendous modernization -which implies enhanced presence of science and technical objects- shall be pondered. The first part deals with scientific inspiration in the naturalist context, where it is defined as dissemination (alteration of rationality, visualization, production of objects) and qualified as genesis of subsequents forms. These forms, examined in a second part along a historical perspective relate to texts progressively structured according to the "systemic organization of technical objects". In the third part, hermeneutical tools are provided for the previous description, leading to the hypothesis of a fetishistic structure of scientific inspiration. Beyond such a local interpretation of naturalism's outgrowth, it shall be possible to reconsider French and European Literature, thus providing insights about the nature of fiction in realist texts, and the correlation between the questions of science and the subject

When contextualising the dialectic confrontation of the semiotic theory with the literary creations of Umberto Eco, one can proceed to analyse the novel "The Island of the Day Befor" in its entirety, considered here as a homogenous corpus of reference over which one can make use of the interpretive techniques of the Italian academician. After a detailed examination of paratextuel elements of the work, further study has been made of the schematic model of the fabula states in the form of macro-propositions, which enables consecutive observation of connections between the structures of the fabula and the plot, as well as the fictional possible worlds of the characters and of the reader. This procedure of disambiguization consists of accomplishing these intertextual scenario inferences have proved that the narrative organisation of the novel is centred essentially on the motive of the journey of which the extremely complex and various forms resurface in several sections of the fabula. The reconsideration of the syntactic structure of the novel as a complex narrative programme composed of numerous narrative programmes (PN) inter-defined by their disposition of the actant process, allows one to support that the PN usage of the PN base (the “diary” and the “letters” of Roberto) correspond to the forms of the dynamic journey reused and reformulated in the PN usage of the PN annex (the “novel” and the “dreams” of Roberto), indicated as static forms of the journey. It can also be argued that the fabula ends through the fusion between the forms of the PN base and PN annex, expressed by the decision of Roberto to enter his own novel in the hope that he will join Lilia on the Island
Braun, Stefanie. "Le discours romanesque de Clara Mundt alias Luise Mühlbach (1814-1873) face à l’histoire : représentation de l’ère napoléonienne, historiographie popularisée et modernité scientifique en Allemagne autour de 1850." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Toulouse 2, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018TOU20068.
The thesis deals with popular historiography and scientific modernity in Germany between 1850 and 1862 – namely after the revolution of 1848 and before Otto von Bismarck became Minister President of Prussia – through the study of three historical novels, Königin Hortense (1856), Napoleon in Deutschland (1858/1859) and Kaiserin Josephine (1861) by Theodor Mundt’s wife Clara Mundt (1814-1873) alias Luise Mühlbach. She was one of the most successful historical novelist of her time, and belongs to the first generation of professional female writers. The main focus of this study is on the literary discourse on the history of relationships between France and Germany. The purpose is to demonstrate how the transmission and the popularization of historical knowledge could be used for education to female patriotism and women citizenship. The study of the use of testimonies and documentary sources borrowed from recent historians shows how L. Mühlbach proceeded to appropriate historical material and to upgrade female figures of the past. Besides the dissertation deals with the analysis of the several historical, political, social and literary mechanisms which explain the success of Clara Mundt’s historical novels between 1850 and 1860. The study puts emphasis on the continuities between L. Mühlbach’s social novels of the Vormärz and the historical novels, like the social and religious issues and the topic of women’s emancipation, in order to question the idea of a split in her work before and after 1848

From its earliest beginnings down to current postmodern XXIst century, Christianity is struck a balance between two phenomena, holding one another in various and complex mounting tensions, of empathy and of awareness towards reason and science. Herein, critical appraisals override the consideration of legitimate autonomy of reason and science, therein, a religious and ethical respect tends to govern various forms and shades of critical esteem, in favour of the autonomy of reason and science. Sciences freed from theologies monopoly, sciences excelling in knowledge and technical performances, but there still remains however, modern and contemporary sciences with misconducts of naturalism, nominalism, narrow positivism or political ideologies.Irrespective of an unresolved conflict, arising from the anti-modernist fights, the Church’s general councils of Vatican I (1869-1870: Constitution Dei Filius, chapter IV) and Vatican II (1962-1965: Constitution Gaudium et spes, 36) made huge steps forward : As the first reminds us of the legitimacy of science and reason in their specific areas of expertise, the second, while taking into account the progress of the theology of history, reflects deeper on the autonomy of worldly realities. With this background, with what canonical tools, could the safeguarding mission of the Roman Catholic character of the Church’s universities, for example, and her protection of cultures, sciences and the world of scientists, - under the conditions - could be guaranteed ?

Understood as a legal discipline, the right of research, relates to the regulation of scientific research between the opposite requirements of science and law. So we're talking through this legal construction of the object : "science", through the "law of research" to understand the patterns of emergence and functions - the development and regulation - of such a right being both caretaker and opponent to the learned institutions. The value and usefulness of the right of the research might be to show, through a legal analysis of scientific behavior, how does the right being understood as a technique works. Does the legal theory can understand a sociological object ? To answer to this, the concept of "scientific community", well known in sociology of science (see especially Robert K. Merton and the "normative structure" of science), will be analyzed according to the theory of the legal system of the Italian constitutional lawyer Santi Romano, in order to better understand the definition of the concept of the legal order.Eventually, it appears that the regulation operated by the state legal order upsets the independence of science, especially the academia sphere and is not always being able to ensure protection where the state should precisely safeguard and promote the quest for knowing. Is it therefore possible to devote a science released from his heteronomy versus the state ? This is the whole final proposal for the establishment of an authentic legal status for the Researcher and, especially, the resolution of scientific disputes by some sort of scientific Labour Court lessons
