Following his time, j-h rosny a (1856-1940) gives a great importance to science and to documentary method. His prehistoric novels show his deep erudition about prehistory and they tel the human evolution from homininds to the actual man, stressing about some qualities such as force, energy, health, and so on the author longs for rediscovering these qualities in modern humanity arising its conscience of colloectivity and solidarity. The prehistoric novel is a functional text reveraling rosny's dualistic vision, according to which there is a positive pole and a negative one, a good pole and a bad one. This narrative genre is built about a central figure, the hero, having both a narrative and ideological role. Its structure is very simple and similar to other traditional literary genres such as "recit de voyage" and the epic. As a travelling tale, the prehistoric novel presents a lot of spatial descriptions. Really, this narrative genre is not very different from realistic and naturalistic novel. You can find a lot of details and technical language. Rosny uses, at the same time, a realistic and visionary style. For its form and content, rosny's prehistoric novel reflects the literary, artistic, scientific and philosophical tendencies of xix century
Hummel, Clément. "Modernités du roman scientifique chez J.-H. Rosny aîné." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Normandie, 2023. http://www.theses.fr/2023NORMC033.
J.-H. Rosny aîné (1856-1940) is the author of a large literary work, including novels, short stories, articles published in the press and in scientific journals. Literary history remembers his involvement in the dispute against Émile Zola's naturalism, his role in the Goncourt Academy, of which he was a founding member and President, the maturity he brought to prehistoric narratives through his seminal novel La Guerre du feu and numerous texts that now position him as one of the pioneers of science fiction in France. The interest of that author lies not so much in what he foreshadowed but rather in the literary modernity he both theorized and practiced at a time when the art of the novel was in crisis in France, and scientific storytelling struggled to move beyond the model set by Jules Verne's Voyages Extraordinaires. This work particularly analyzes the multifaceted connections that this versatile author maintained with the sciences, which held a “poetic passion” for him and to which he declared himself a reformer. While he produced various essays on scientific philosophy and presented some of his reflections to the Academy of Sciences, it’s through the medium of the novel that he invents both modern science and literature

Cultural and economic changes occurred during the Roman period, already started during the Iron Age due to Mediterranean contacts. This archaeobotanical research (archaeological seeds and fruits) aims to characterize plant economy of Roman populations. Harbours, as an interface between the Mediterranean Sea and the hinterland, are an interesting research subject to approach the dynamics of the circulation of food products and introduction of new plants. This work is based on the carpological study of new samples from 14 archaeological sites - harbours and coastal productive villae - located along the Lion Gulf and Adriatic Sea. They deliver an abundant macro remains material, mostly waterlogged. It allows registering a wider spectrum of economic plants (both cultivated and wild) providing new insights into diet, plant processing activities, local cultivation and trade. We establish a first carpological synthesis of published and new data, on economic plants from Mediterranean area. The most frequently recorded taxa are cereals, grapevine, fig tree, olive tree, stone pine and walnut tree. In north-western and central Mediterranean, some plants are just consumed and others locally introduced and grown during Roman times, such as peach tree, melon/cucumber, coriander, bottle gourd and rye. We observe no clear differences in the food access between harbours and their hinterland, and between urban areas and productive villae. Homogeneity of dietary practices and crop production seems to be link to the united power and the global economy of the Roman Empire, with a large and efficient sea trade. Exotic goods - date, jujube and sebesten fruits - seem to be reserve to privileged social classes of urban or suburban areas. Paleocontent analysis of jars gives new insights on food preparations, such as conserves of olives, which matches sometimes the ancient sources. Ornemental plants also contribute symbolically to the diffusion of Roman values. The morphometric analyses carried out on pips of Vitis vinifera and stones of Olea europaea show wide spectra of forms for both species. These morphotypes, cultivated and others close to the wild forms, were both cultivated and used for wine making, for oil making and for table grapes and olives

From its source to the Mediterranean Sea, the Vidourle valley, 95 km long, meets the various landscapes of the low-Languedoc géo-system. Through its journey, the river runs across the Cévennes (a small chain of mountains), the karstik hills, the garrigue and the camargue. This very rich natural environment is a perfect field for spatio-temporal analysis of settlements from the Iron Age to the High Middle Ages. Occupied since millenaries, this valley is of great archaeological wealth and allow us to question the behavior of man towards a river, through his travels and his way to develop the land, but also provides some answers on the roles of streams in this development. Based on many already advanced archaeological works (excavations, surveys, geomorphological analysis), this study was completed by new fieldworks in the upper valley of the river, expanding our knowledge of the settlement and helping us to provide a database of 832 archeological sites on which this analysis is based. Combining archeology, history and geography, along with the use of well known methods of studies (G.I.S, statistics, etc.), this research highlights the desire to offer a review of the issue of dynamics in valley of Vidourle. The broad chronological framework strengthens this desire and gives a more complete picture of the history of human occupation

The Middle Palaeolithic covers around 300,000 years (MIS 10 to MIS 3). During this time, human behavior has been affected by various factors leading to a mosaic of responses which characterize the cultural diversity of Neanderthal populations. Through the study of lithic technical behavior and the comparison of these results with those obtained from other disciplines that study archaeological evidence, the intention here is to provide data on the variability of lithic assemblages. For that purpose, the lithic assemblages from Payre, Abric Romaní and Grotte Tournal were selected. The study of lithic technology at each site as well as a comparative analysis of the results and their contextualization in the Middle Palaeolithic panorama of south-western Europe, will provide data on the variability of lithic assemblages and the possible and will add to the understanding of the relationship between the composition of the lithic record, subsistence activities, and the type of occupations
