Abstract:
Inscriptions have a crucial role to play in our understanding of Roman family history. This chapter underlines some of the methodological problems in using inscriptions for such topics as the demography of the family, family relations, and family structures. Despite these problems, it demonstrates how inscriptions are revealing for topics such as kinship, marriage, spousal affection, childbirth, and the rearing of children .

Abstract:
Although recognized as a student of Greek language and culture, Wilde also read Latin fluently and studied Roman history and literature. This knowledge is displayed in his thesis-length essay, ‘Historical Criticism’, written in 1879 but unpublished in his lifetime; it compares classical Greek and Roman historians, with about 90 per cent of the exposition devoted to the Greeks. Wilde’s truncated consideration of Roman historians like Livy and Tacitus in ‘Historical Criticism’ would have been amplified considerably if he had included more of the language and examples he drafted, as seen in the unquoted entries in his two Oxford notebooks and in the ‘Historical Criticism’ notebook. Allusions and mentions in Wilde’s letters and later works, from his poetry and journalism to critical essays and finally to De Profundis, also display the lifelong range of his references to Roman history, historians, and culture.
