Full textAfter having distinguished three explicative aspects of the novel (the psychological, social and plot-driven aspects) and defined three corresponding types of novels (novels of characters, manners and plot), this work focuses on the novel of manners during the Bourbon Restoration and the July Monarchy. Heir to quite an old tradition, this genre is at its peak with the Scottian historical novel and the novel of contemporary manners of the 1820’s. Balzac, first influenced by the novel of manners, develops in The Human Comedy a hybrid form (combining social and psychological aspects, novel of characters and novel of manners), which we may call the realistic novel (characterized by an overloading of verisimilitude). This definition of realism does not erase the differences between the authors; it allows, on the contrary, to appreciate the specific poetics developed by Stendhal, George Sand or Champfleury

Full textThe representation of female sexual desire in the novel of manners of the second half of the 19th century raises critical issues – it highlights the paradoxes at play in the second half of the 19th century, torn between contradictory representations of women, as either sexually haunted creatures or virgin mothers ; it informs us about the construction of masculine and feminine gender roles ; it makes us reflect on the scandals, past and present, caused by the desiring female body and the gaze cast upon it ; it interrogates the poetics of this literary genre as well as its claims to objectivity. The ambition of the novels analysed here is a comprehensive account of reality, with a claim to scientific rationality. And yet, when they deal with female desire, they indulge in a form of stylistic veiling that requires the reader to unpack the meaning. The purpose of this thesis was to analyse this veil of words covering female bodies, in order to lay bare the mechanisms behind the mendacity. The socio-critical method makes it possible to show the interactions between the novels and the various social discourses of their time – medical, religious, legal or even pedagogical – and thus to reveal a complex and coherent social imagery of female desire, whose stereotypes the novel both upholds and thwarts. In literary texts, scientific theories morph into poetic material, and double entendre becomes an art. These oblique erotic representations turn the descriptions of female desire into a minefield of innuendo, mostly developed by and for men. Some novels, however, already make room for a female voice and gaze of desire, sometimes even beyond gender

Full textIn the African novel written in French, death prervades the narrative fabric. What strikes the reader is the omnipresence of death, as feature in the titles. The recurrence of the motif of violent death is to be set in relation with authoritarian regimes in Africa. The evolution of African society has introduced a significant factor underlying the novel, which is the deritualisation of death as a consequence of the devitalisation of myths. Facing existential angst, the novel reappropriates the way of thinking about death extant among traditional African societies. It consists in bringing into play the permanent conflict between " impulsie imagination " and " rational imagination " one the one hand, and their complementarity on the other. The dynamic antagonism opposing rationality and impuse in the constructive phase of their duality enables the creation of myths which make life tolerable. Against this cultural background the novel builds utopias to postulate another dimension to the future

Full textThe analysis of the recurrences of the qualifying adjective in Chrétien de Troyes' work starts with a quantitative approach, meant to enable us to perform a qualitative examination of the unit announced by the title. The methodological principles applied are structural and comparative. On the one hand, it is a matter of isolating the adjective in the recurrent structures of Chrétien's poetical language and, on the other hand, of comparing – from the same viewpoint – his novels. Our research related to the functions of the qualifying adjective is the grammatical component of our work. What was at stake here was to prove the originality of this 12th century author, across the literary language of his time. The three aspects – namely the literary techniques, the use of highly recurrent adjectives and the symbolic dimensions of the adjectives – correspond to the leading ideas of the second part of the study. The dynamics of the Middle Ages mentalities is emphasized by the functioning of the qualifying adjective. Chrétien remains faithful to the techniques established by his predecessors and his originality is given by the sequence of units and by the creation of a different medieval world. The Appendixes are, according to us, indispensable for our critical approach, since they represent the corpus

Men and women of letters, Chateaubriand, Lamartine, Michelet, Balzac, Hugo, Sand, the Goncourt brothers, Mirabeau, Maupassant take part in this thermal cure phenomenon and attend water cities. Sand takes the opportunity to make excursions, Dumas runs away from rampant cholera over Paris, Balzac is involved in a courtship with the Marchioness of Castries, Zola accompanies his wife who is a patient, Mallarmé joins his mistress… But most of writers go to thermal cures for health purposes. In this way Bashkirtseff seeks to eradicate tuberculosis, Daudet, Maupassant and Lorrain treat their syphilis, Chateaubriand his rheumatism, Verlaine his leg ulcers, Proust his asthma. All these writers patients shared about their experience, in their correspondence or in their novels, poems, travel stories. Their characters live in these water cities as well ; Christiane Andermatt gets to the springs of Mont Oriol’s exploitation, the cure mostly is the opportunity for her to meet her lover and to have a baby, without waters playing a specific role ; Verdinet, Galinois and other protagonists of Labiche’s comedy, I compromised my wife, are in Bagnères-de-Bigorre, and Mirabeau’s neurasthenic, in Luchon. This is a walk in the world of waters, as seen by writers, between 1800 and 1914

Full textIn this work, we examined the literary period called Tanzimat(1850-1910), which was developed under the influence of European Literature. This period is a fundemantal change not only in history, politics, and society but also in art and literature. Thanks to these changes (Reforms in 1839) Ottoman Empire was introduced to the European ideas in literay and social areas. As a consequence of cultural or social relations with the western world, novel form entered the Turkish literature in second half of the 19 th century. During this period, many Turkish writers knowing western civilisation produced literary works especially novels to prepare the society for social and political reforms as well as to introduce western ideas. Among these writers, Ahmet Mithat Efendi was the most prolific pioneer in creating a new novel-reading society which was formerly a reader of national literature such as epic, folk tale, Mesnevi, and others, mostly in verse originating from Divan Litearture and Folk literature. Ahmet Mithat Efendi wrote Denizci Hasan in 1872, the first Turkish novel, borrowing its elements from Alexandre Duma's Monte-Cristo. Under the light of this influence, we did a comparative study between the two novels: Denizci Hasan and Monte-Cristo. Especially we focused on how seccessfuly Ahmet Mithat Efendi did this when he combined the western narrative elements making use of Dumas Père's Monte-Cristo as his original simple with those of Turkish folk tales into new novel form. This dissertation having 5 parts gives detail about the rise of Turkish novel under the influence of western literature especialy 19th century French novel in the main parts, and the beginning of the first historial and poltical relations with the western world, especialy France in the introductory parts

Full textThis thesis aims to address the emergence and the development in French literature of a whole new genre, from the beginning of the 19th until the end of the 20th century: the contemporaneous Roman-themed novel. Dealing not with the stability of the Ancient City, its ruins and its monuments, but with the shifting urban and human landscape of the time, it disrupts the tradition of the Grand Tour, which was implicitly based on the notion that no fiction could be invented in the eternal present of Rome, since the perception one could have there was so deeply rooted in the past. By using the novel, writers were simultaneously confronted to the modernity of the medium and to the urban and political modernisation of the city, while the sign of Rome – the myth of the Eternal City – was always present in their mind. Novels set in contemporaneous Rome provided their authors with the possibility to engage with the most crucial issues inherent to the aesthetics and ethics of fiction: the role of belief in modern cultures – in terms of religion and its counterpart, literary fiction; the role of the past in the construction of modernity; the importance of the present in the experience of the past; the meaning of the Ancients at the time of the Moderns. Analysing the forms of the French contemporaneous Roman-themed novel signifies even more than engaging with the portrait of a city: it is a study in the relevance of Western paradigms

Full textThe work of Juan Carlos Onetti, prolific, diverse and singular, represents the renovation of the Uruguayan and Latin-American literature. When he was assistant editor for the magazine Marcha between 1939 and 1941, he exposed in a series of articles his viewpoint about literature, which needed, as he stated, a renovation urgently. His own work illustrates those theories; and with the mythic city Santa Maria he created, he developed a new kind of urban literature more in accordance with his contemporaries and the world he lived in. In France, the Nouveau Roman, which emerged in about 1940, constitutes a rupture in French literature. This innovative movement, often called "literature of look", went beyond traditional narrative forms. The purpose of this study is to compare Juan Carlos Onetti’s work with certain books written by two representatives of the Nouveau Roman: Robbe-Grillet and Claude Simon. From three axes the study of a character in crisis, the study of different narrative voices and the study of the relationship between man, his writings and fiction, this research work questions and analyses new narrative forms which definitively changed the rules of the Past

Full textFrom 1945 to 1950, the American Novel promulgates his presence on the French literary scenery and appears as a model beyond compare to renew the French novel. Our thesis is dedicated to this American moment of the French novel that opens at the Liberation. The publication of Americanized novels increases and creates a constant interest from the literary critics, sometimes enthusiast, sometimes outraged by the consequences of this “new-blood” injection in the French novel’s veins. “Legitimate” novelists, such as Sartre, Des Forêts, Vailland, are actually as attracted by this miraculous resource as the detective novel writers, such as Simenon, Malet, Meckert, who are the first willing to benefit from the hard boiled success. Simultaneously, two different ways to seize the American substance are appearing: the “serious” novelists embrace it briefly, but go from fascination to disappointment; as to the detective novel writers, they transform a sheer imitation reflex into fertile assimilation. Yet, all those novels have not often been studied. Our work is aiming to expose this American path, taken by a vast panel of French novelists, in an even more so profitable manner since they used the American material as a starting point, an experimentation opportunity, but also as a way to assert their own fictional identity. By reexamining the French novel’s debt towards the one from across the Atlantic, we hope to confer all its significance to this dazzling American moment that establishes the transition between the changes made by the avant gardes in the twenties and the ones undertaken by the New Novelists
