Abstract: The Sun is present to a greater or lesser extent in all Ancient Religions. Various Mediterranean versions of the same god came into contact due to Hellenism and to Roman Empire later, sharing theonyms, epithets and symbology. As a result of that, diverse Greco-Roman and Oriental epikleseis of Sun developed a common language. However, beyond formal similarities Sol’s vinculation with Ludi and quadrigae is revealed as exclusively Roman.Palabras clave: Sol, religión romana, Ludi, cuadriga, Circo Máximo, orientalizante.Key words: Sol, Sun, Roman religion, Ludi, quadriga, Circus Maximus, orientalizing.

Abstract:
The article presents the findings of the research of Calvinistic Christianity’s attitude towards the other religion groups in Batavia during the 17th century. By using the Historical Method, the conclusions are obtained as follows: (1) The VOC recognized exclusively the Calvinistic Christianity as the only legitimate religion (publieke kerk), (2) The Calvinistic Christianity manipulated the VOC to behave strict towards the Roman Catholics so that many Roman Catholic priests were consequently imprisoned. To prevent the Batavia citizens from embracing the Roman Catholics, the Calvinistic Christianity had the Roman Catholic's sacrament of Baptism considered as as not legally valid by the VOC so that it could not fulfill the marriage requirements, (3) Meanwhile, Islam and Confucianism in Batavia remained unrecognized as official religions. However, their political and economic influence forced the VOC to be very careful in decision-making, especially concerning their religious lives.

Abstract: The scientific interest in salt has often found useful partners in researchers of the Roman economy, rather than in its symbolic relationship with the settlers. For this reason, the study aims to analyse the relationship between salt and Roman religion, taking the example of the cult of Hercules in Rome, Ostia and central Italy. To this end, the figure of the Italic god in its original context will be analysed first, highlighting its conceptual differences with the later Greco-Roman god and its relationship with salt and its urban cult. In a second moment, the role that the god plays with the city of Ostia and its casuistry will be reviewed, in order to, finally, study the devotion of the divinity in the centre of Italy, tremendously rooted since very remote times in sanctuaries such as that of Alba Fucens.Palabras clave: Sal, religión romana, Hércules, Roma, Ostia, Alba Fucens, Via Salaria.Key words: Salt, Roman Religion, Hercules, Rome, Ostia, Alba Fucens, Via Salaria.

Abstract: The Gods of Rome were regarded by the Romans as their fellow citizens and their interests were fully and completely identified with those of the city. Their role was to serve as guides and counsellors on the actions of the men, particularly the statesmen. When war altered the natural course of civic life and threatened the social peace, the gods took over control of the situation, preventing the Romans from the major and serious calamities that were looming and warning of the extraordinary efforts that they would have to make in order to tackle them and minimize their effects. In the course of certain military campaigns against foreign peoples or during periods of struggle for political leadership, the gods considered that the key to preserving Rome was through sacrificing their consuls. Such announcement came ‘imprinted’ on the liver of an animal to be sacrificed and its fatal end affected the personal fate of the chief magistrates of the state. This signum was recognized in the absence of the ‘head’ of the liver (caput iecoris) of the animal sacrificed. Research on the eleven known cases in the Republic— including that of Julius Caesar himself—and the study of the nature of the signum mortis are the main objectives of this paper.Palabras clave: Historia de Roma, Roma republicana, magistrados romanos, cónsules de Roma, Religión romana, adivinación pública romana, extispicina, miedo.Key words: Roman History, Roman Republic, Roman magistrates, Roman consuls, Roman Religion, Roman public divination, Extispicy, fear.

Abstract:

Abstract:
2008 - 2009
Abstract:
Gaius Julius Caesar remains one of the most studied characters of antiquity. His personality, political career, and military campaigns have garnered numerous scholarly treatments, as have his alleged aspirations to monarchy and divinity. However, comparatively little detailed work has been done to examine his own personal religiosity and even less attention has been paid to his religion in the context of his military conquests. I argue that Caesar has wrongly been deemed irreligious or skeptical and that his conduct while on campaign demonstrates that he was a religious man. Within the Roman system of religion, ritual participation was more important than faith or belief. Caesar pragmatically manipulated the Romans' flexible religious framework to secure military advantage almost entirely within the accepted bounds of religious conduct. If strict observance of ritual was the measure of Roman religiosity, then Caesar exceeded the religious expectations of his rank and office. The evidence reveals that he was an exemplar of Roman religio throughout both the Gallic Wars (58-51BC) and the subsequent Civil Wars (49-45BC).

Abstract: Cicero's On Divination is the main work from antiquity on the subject of divination. The practice aimed at the contact between men and gods to know the divine will and it was so important that it was considered part of the official religion of Rome. Cicero composed the work over a period of crisis and change in Roman religion, caused by the influence of Hellenistic philosophy and skeptical ideas and the growing superstition in the midst of his people. The work is formulated in the form of a dialogue, divided in two books: the first book is presented to the defense of divination and the second book, a speech against divination. The research was divided in four phases: review of the translation of the first book of the work, done in the Scientific Initiation; translation of the second book; compilation of notes; introductory study about the ancient practice of divination and Cicero's position on the subject

Abstract:
Roma in former Czechoslovakia have historically experienced economic and political marginalisation and been treated and portrayed as inferior to ethnic Czechs and Slovaks. Roma thereby became perceived as different from non-Roma citizens, as not belonging to the Czech or Slovak nation, as an 'exception'. The post-socialist transition produced economic precarity, new inequalities, and a climate of rising nationalist sentiments in Central and Eastern Europe. The perception of Roma as not having the same rights as ethnic Czechs or Slovaks to access state care became even more salient than during the socialist period. Following the enlargement of the European Union in 2004, Roma are now able to move freely across EU borders and to find employment and settle in the United Kingdom. Migration to the UK, including Leeds, offered Roma new economic opportunities as well as the promise of escaping ethnic stigmatisation. It seemed to offer the possibility to lead what I refer to as a 'normal life' as equal citizens. This thesis is based on ethnographic research among Czech and Slovak Roma in Leeds. It reveals the processes that contribute to Roma becoming defined as an exception after migrating to Leeds, and looks at the ways in which Roma resist this. It recounts the interactions that Roma have with different aspects of state care, namely welfare provision, services and projects aimed at improving the well-being of Roma, and with non-Roma Czech and Slovak interpreters. Some Roma in Leeds have converted to a Roma Pentecostal Church, the Life and Light. In this thesis I argue that by providing material support to Roma, both converts and non-converts, and through a narrative that Roma are a lost tribe of Israel, the Church constructs Roma as a moral collectivity and subverts their position of inferiority and 'exceptionality'. The Church provides a way for Roma to be respectable, to live with dignity and to have what they understand to be a 'normal' life, whilst retaining their Roma identity.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the changing form and function of non-funerary cult buildings in early Latial and Etruscan settlements in order to better describe and understand the advent of monumental temples in the archaeological record. It draws on a significant quantity of material excavated in the past forty years and developments in relevant theoretical frameworks to reconstruct the changing appearance of cult buildings from huts to shrines and temples (Chapters 2 to 4), and to place monumental examples within wider religious, topographical, and functional contexts (Chapters 5 to 7). This broader perspective allows a more accurate assessment of the extent to which monumental temples represent continuity and discontinuity with earlier religious architecture, and furthermore clarifies the respective roles of Latium and Etruria in the transformation of cult buildings into distinctive, prominent parts of the built environment. Although it is possible to find many different accounts of religious monumentalisation in existing scholarship, this thesis holds that traditional narratives no longer accurately reflect the archaeological evidence. It sets out a sequence of developments in which early religious architecture was a dynamic, rather than conservative, phenomenon. It demonstrates that temples were not the inevitable product of a natural progression from open-air votive deposition to monumentality, or simply an imported concept, but rather a deliberate response to the opportunities offered by an increasingly mobile Mediterranean population. It also contends that Latium played a more important role in formulating the characteristic components and functions of central Italic temples than previously thought. This thesis consequently offers a new account of early religious architecture in western central Italy as well as an alternative interpretation of its monumentalisation.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter characterises the relations between culture, religion, and corruption/prosperity. It advances the explanations of the prosperity–religion nexus from the perspective of cultural attributes (e.g. trust, individualism, familialism) by comparing Roman Catholic and Protestant theologies.Protestant denominations have mostly relinquished their founding principles, while “Rome never changes” as per the Italian saying. Despite the progress after Vatican II, Roman Catholicism has not markedly altered its beliefs and practices or its institutional founding principles (i.e. Canon Law) since medieval times. The political repercussions of an ecumenism in “Rome terms” are beyond its theological or religious implications.Liberation theology urged the Latin American Roman Church to break away from its imperialist origins and favouritism for landlords, industrialists, and power elites. However, liberation theology never became the mainstream or hegemonic Catholic theology in Latin America.Distinct Protestant theologies and organisational forms have led to distinct outcomes. New forms of Protestantism (i.e. Pentecostalism) placing less emphasis on education are less likely to have a positive social impact than previous (historical) Protestant versions. Some Protestant denominations still adhere to intertextual historicist biblical interpretation and hold the belief that the papacy continues to be “Satan’s synagogue” today. The heavily criticised Prosperity Gospel (PG) movement has syncretic roots in Pentecostalism, New Thought, and African American religion, and is composed mainly of the middle classes and blacks. While syncretism has been a natural process in all religions, Jews and historical Protestants have tended to be more anti-syncretic given their Scriptural base of beliefs. In turn, the importance of traditions, in Roman Catholicism for instance, has led to include more non-orthodox rituals in its practice.

AbstractRelevant empirical studies demonstrate robust associations between corruption and religion, mainly concluding that Protestantism curbs corruption, in contrast with Roman Catholicism, which tends to increase the perceived corruption. Hierarchical religions such as Islam, Roman Catholicism, and Orthodoxy have adverse effects on education and civic engagement, thus promoting corruption. In turn, Protestantism has led to better education and human capital, and profoundly influenced the rise and spread of stable democracy worldwide.

AbstractThis chapter explores the influence of religion and hegemony on language by concentrating on English, German and the Romance languages widely spoken in Europe and the Americas.Bible translations have helped to keep alive native languages. German and English are associated with the Reformation and have thus been highly influenced by the Bible. In turn, Roman languages are associated with the status quo of the Roman Empire, i.e. Roman Church-State. The Roman Church-State condemned—and sought to impede—any effort to bring the Holy Scriptures within reach of common people, in order to prevent what happened in Germany and England. Thus, the influence of the Bible on Latin languages has been limited.

Abstract:
In 1918, the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes included various peoples and numerous churches and religious communities. The largest number of inhabitants of the new state belonged to the Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Muslim religions. The founder of the Constitution had the obligation to regulate the right to freedom of religion by the Constitution and to ensure equality between the existing churches and religious communities. The founder of the Constitution decided to reject the earlier constitutional model of the state religion from the Kingdom of Serbia and the Kingdom of Montenegro and to standardize the constitutional model of adopted or recognized religions. The political basis for the new constitutional solution was found in point 7 of the Corfu Declaration, which stated that ”all recognized religions will be exercised freely and publicly. The Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Mohammedan religions, which are the strongest in our nation in terms of the number of followers, will be equal and equal to the state. Based on these principles, the legislator will take care to preserve and maintain confessional peace, which corresponds to the spirit and past of our entire nation”. The paper analyzes the norms of the Vidovdan Constitution on freedom of religion.

Abstract:
There is a great interest in the study of anthroponyms in the Roma community in Romania, because they are defined by a less common type of semantic richness. The act of naming bears the imprint of their preferences, their connection with different cultures, their attitude towards religion, brands and events. Thus, one can notice the coexistence of old, traditional names and names influenced by onomastic fashion, of original, atypical first names and names with religious origins. Therefore, the Roma are among the few people with unique names, which is why they can be unequivocally identified in society.

Discrimination, together with poverty, is a major obstacle to the social inclusion of Roma people. When it comes to areas where discrimination is potentially committed, the most complaints are within the range of violations of the dignity of the person, or insult, threat or similar behavior that characterizes the person's verbal endangerment. Hate speech – making public statements that contains messages of hate or intolerance against a racial, national, ethnic, religious, sexual, or other social group or its members is often expressed on social networks. The authors present the legal basis for the protection of Roma people against discrimination, possible acts of discrimination on social networks, discuss the relationship between hate speech and free speech and the possible responsibility of social networks.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The Bulgarian educational system is multicultural – in terms of ethnicity, religion, and mother language. The common ethnic groups in the country are Roma, who are the most heterogeneous minority community, Bulgarian Turks, Pomaks, Jews, Vlachs, Armenians, and others. Roma students often have learning difficulties with various etiologies. In these populations, some students do not speak or have a poor command of the Bulgarian language, both in writing and sometimes in spoken language. However, these children and young people need to be educated. Roma students and their parents need active communication and cooperation in this regard. The report presents the results of a study of the emotions and feelings experienced by teachers when working with Roma students and non-Roma students, as well as the emotions and feelings experienced by teachers in communication with the parents of these two groups of students. The research methodology contains eleven concepts characterizing different emotions and feelings and a five-point Likert-type scale measuring their degree of expression. The study was conducted on a sample of 193 teachers. The research results show that teachers often experience stress, fatigue, helplessness, and nervousness when working with Roma students. Joy, serenity, and enthusiasm are too low. When communicating with the parents of Roma students, the emotions experienced are identical. The work of the same teachers with non-Roma students is accompanied by positive emotions and experiences – joy, enthusiasm, vigilance, and calm. Negative emotions and experiences are of low expression. Teachers feel the same emotions and experiences, but in a different order, during their communication with parents of non-Roma students.

Abstract:
The paper aims to highlight two aspects: on the one hand, to what extent names of saints interact with names of holidays in the Christian (Orthodox, Greek-Catholic, Roman-Catholic) calendar and in the folk calendar; on the other hand, whether names of saints and/or holidays in Romanian cultural space can be found in other cultural spaces. Upon looking at names of saints and holidays over the year in the calendars mentioned above, sometimes we notice similarities or contaminations, whereas on other occasions we come across differences. We focus our attention on twelve saints, correlated with twelve holidays over the year, celebrated by Christians regardless of religious confession and cultural space. The regional names of the holidays from various Romanian ethnographic areas attest to their age. The complexity of this research is underpinned by our synchronic analysis and interdisciplinary perspective (linguistics, ethnology, religion, mythology), which also refers to identity-otherness relationships, eponyms, isotopies, synonymy and antinomy connections, contamination and multiculturalism in onomastics.

Abstract:
This brief highlights how structural discrimination and social exclusion shape attitudes to COVID-19 vaccines among Roma communities in Italy, and the role trusted communal and public authorities can play in supporting vaccine uptake and tackling broader exclusions. Contradictions in the Italian state’s response to COVID-19, alongside ongoing forms of exclusion can increase Roma mistrust in state initiatives and prevent vaccine participation. This brief aims to aid and inform local government and public health authorities in Italy that serve populations inclusive of Roma communities. This brief is based on research conducted in-person and remotely from November 2021 to January 2022 with Roma and Sinti communities in Milan, Rome and Catania, Italy, which have distinct historical, linguistic, geographical, religious, and other forms of identification. Similarities in how the different Roma communities experience the COVID-19 pandemic, and in their vaccine decisions were identified. This brief was developed for SSHAP by Iliana Sarafian (LSE) with contributions and reviews from Elizabeth Storer (LSE), Tabitha Hrynick (IDS), Dr Marco Solimene (University of Iceland) and Dijana Pavlovic (Upre Roma). The research was funded through the British Academy COVID-19 Recovery: G7 Fund (COVG7210058). Research was based at the Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa, London School of Economics. Abstract:
