Abstract:
With the constant aim of reducing the turbofan consumption, aircraft manufacturers try to reach higher efficiency by increasing the compressor-turbine speed. In order to limit the fan speed, a planetary gearbox is introduced between the fan and the compressor. Because of their good oil-off performance, roller bearings are often preferred over hydrodynamic bearings for aircraft applications. However, in the case of planetary gearboxes, the roller bearings are submitted to severe centrifugal forces which cause significant power losses and premature cage fatigue that may lead to overall bearing failure. The present work consists in the development of a numerical model for the understanding of the dynamic behaviour of a cylindrical roller bearing working in a centrifugal field. Multi-body dynamics is used, coupled with semi-analytical contact models accounting for the different lubrication regimes encountered in the bearing. In addition, a finite element model is developed to account for the outer ring flexibility that may affect the bearing dynamics. Results are presented for a typical planetary gearbox application in terms of force, speed and power losses. Severe roller/cage impacts are observed and the mechanisms that cause the high power losses and the cage fatigue are explained. The influence of the main model hypothesis is presented. Finally, a study of the influence of the different parameters on the force amplitude and the bearing loaded zone shape and position is performed

Abstract:
The study has taken its starting point in discussions with a contact person in a multinational corporate group. The contact person described a desire to examine which communication channels that would be the most appropriate to use in the communication with line managers regarding HR-practices. The purpose of the study was to, in an multinational corporate group, examine, describe and analyse the relationship and communication between the HR-function and line managers as well as identify which opportunities and obstacles that exist for these areas. The theoretical starting points consisted of theories regarding relationships, communication and organisation. The study is based on a qualitative approach and the empirical material is collected through seven semi-structured interviews as well as one written response based on the interview guide. The material has been analysed by thematic analysis. The results show that the relationship and communication between HR Business Partners (HRBP) and managers in the examined organisation are perceived as quite good. The interviews also show that the managers are happy with the support they get from their HRBP overall and that they rather get support and information through email unless it is issues that need to be discussed. Furthermore the study shows that the physical distance can affect the relationship and communication in a negative way because it reduces the number of informal and spontaneous meetings that can encourage the relationship. There is no strategy for the internal communication in the corporate group today, something that we think should exist.

Abstract:

Cam mechanism is widely applied in automatic, and in which, roller-gear cam mechanism is widely studied and used for their excellent performance in kinematics and dynamics. The study derived the surface profile equations and the meshing equations of the spherical meshing elements from the homogeneous coordinate transformation matrix and the conjugate surface theory proved by the envelope theory. In the tool path generation aspect, we demonstrated the position equation of cam profile using the coordinate transformation theory and obtained the perfected controlling position point of the tool path under the limitation of the chord errors. Finally, the design and the machining module developed via Visual Basic that generates the cam profile points and the tool path points. Constructing the cam surface from Unigraphics to test and verify the cam profile equation. In order to examine the tool path, we use the hypostatized cutting simulation software, Vericut, to simulate the motion of the tool path of the roller-gear cam and to verify the correctness of the method proposed in this study.

A systematic study for the synthesis and analysis of roller gear cam mechanisms is presented. Due to the advantages of no no time lag, low amplitude of vibration, high reliability, roller gear cams have widely been used in various automatic equipments. Typical applications can be frequently found in conveyors, machine tools, press feed mechanisms, and assembly systems. The goals of this study are aimed at, first, to synthesize motion curves, and second, to determine the cam profiles, and th ird, to analyze the properties of the cam mechanisms, and withou t undercutting in the machining process. The interpolation of nonparametric rational B-splines is used to synthesize and refine the dwell-rise-dwell motion function of the follower. In addition, unsymmetrical follower motions and defined. based on the rigid body transformation, the analytical profile surface of the roller gear cam is determined. Based on the vector operation, acting forces and torques of the cam mechanism are analyzed. Based on differential geometry, to avoid undercutting in the machining process, the principal curvatures of the cam surfaces are calculated. Furthermore, based on the design parameters, the relation between the numbers of the tool paths and the rollers is identified to produce the NC codes for a cam milling/ grinding machine.

Rotary tables are generally regarded as the forth axis of machining tools. Traditionally, gear sets are used as reducers in the rotary tables. In order to improve the positioning accuracy, load and efficiency of rotary tables, a rotary table which applies the roller gear cam reducer is proposed. From the deduction of the theory, applications of roller gear cam reducers in the industries can be achieved. This thesis is focused on developing the procedure as follows: Firstly, the type of roller gear cam reducer and design parameters are identified. Secondly, the mechanical characteristics of the device are analyzed. Finally, a rotary table is designed and implemented to investigate the performance of the of the roller gear cam rotary table.

The equation of the cam surface can be derived by using coordinate transformation or rigid body transformation method. Using finite element method to investigate the contact stress of roller gear cams requires the exact coordinates of the contact points. The program for automatic meshing of the finite element models of roller gear cams is coded. Using FEA software Marc, the contact stress between the roller and the cam can be evaluated. Comparing with the results which were obtained by using finite element analysis and Hertz contact theory for various dimensions of rollers and cams, the modified equations are then obtained in this study. The modified equation might be useful in roller gear cam design.

An experimental analysis for the assembly of the roller gear cam (RGC) mechanism is presented in this thesis. In real conditions, the manufacturing and assembly errors may cause non-conjugate mating which will influence the kinematic and dynamic performances of the RGC mechansim. In particular, when compressive preload is applied to eliminate the backlash between the roller and the cam rib, the manufacturing and assembly errors may produce excessive compressive force and damage the needle bearing or the cam surface. On the other hand, the clearance between the roller and the cam rib will result in vibration problem. The friction effect and the elastic deformation have been difficult to be analyzed so far by using theoretical apparoch because of embedded uncertainties, unkmowns nad errors. Thus, an experimental method to analyze the kinematic and force responses due to different manufacturing or assembly errors is necessary. A testing amchine for assembly experiment of the RGC mechanism is desngned and implemented in this study. In addition, a computer-aided assembly procedure intended to replace the traditional handwork assembly procedure is presented in this theses. First, the characteristic curves are measured by varying each assembly parameter and the results are constucted into a data base. Next, when a set of available RGC mechanism is preliminary installed on the assembly test machine and the kinematic and force responses are measured, a qualitatively identification method is used to determine the adjustment sequences. Finally, the slope compqrison method, based on comparing the slope of two measured characteristic values with the characteristic curve in the data base, is used to determine the adjustment direction and evaluate the required adjustment amount.

Globoidal cams have been widely applied in industry and the accuracy of globoidal cams is very important. When the rotary speed of input increases, residual vibrations caused by inertial may influence the positioning accuracy of globoidal cams. Therefore, an experimental apparatus is built to measure the actual residual vibrations of globoidal cam mechanisms. Investigations of the influences of various motion curves (MS curves、symmetric RB curves and unsymmetrical RB curves), cam blank size, and a torque compensation mechanism on the positioning accuracy at different input speeds are performed to find the ways to improve the positioning accuracy of globoidal cam mechanisms.

Roller-gear-cam mechanisms are one of the inteimittent motion mechanisms widely used in industries for their excellent performance in loading capacity, operating noise, rumimg vibration, and system reliability. This research consists of the following two parts: the discussion of the theories and methods for the design of roller-gear-cam mechanisms to construct analytical models, and the analysis and dynamic testing of the prototypes. Design parameter are decided first according to design requirements. Based on coordinate transformation and theory of conjugate surfaces, the systematic mathematical surface equations of the roller-gear-camwith different type of rollers are derived. The analytical models of kinematicdesign, dynamic design, and strength design are developed with design parameters. By controlling the values of design parameters, the performances of roller-gear-cams are obtained. By way of the surface normal vector of the cam and the velocities of the cam and the roller, the manipulability index and transmissivity index of this mechanism to evaluate the transmitting performance we derived, The lubrication angle is defined as the index of lubricant condition of the conjugate surfaces. Loading analysis of Joints and contact force, moment, friction force, friction moment, and required input torque between pairs, based on coulomb friction model, are carried. The stress distribution of different points of the roller-gear-cam by Hertz contact stress is obtained in dynamic design. And, the finite element method is applied on the points having maximum Hertz contact stress with PATRAN software. A testing machine is constructed for the experimental testing of a prototype roller-gear-cam. The experimental datum is in agreement with analytical results. The output of this work is of necessary for the design and analysis of roller-gear-cam mechanisms.

The dynamic characteristics of roller gear cam (RGC) systems under different operating conditions are investigated. The numerical simulation and the experimental measurements of RGC systems are included in this thesis. The effects of RGC can curve, element stiffness and element damping on the response of systems are studied. Element characteristics and input-output function of RGC are employed to derive the equation of motion of the system. The dynamic response of the system under different operating speed is solved by using the 6th order Runge-Kutta method. Comparison between numerical simulation results and experimental measured data indicate that the proposed RGC model is accurate and feasible for simulating the dynamic response of a RGC system.

Roller gear cams are widely used in the industry for indexing. Compared with conventional indexing cams, roller gear cams require less space and provide accurate, high-speed motions. To date, most studies have been devoted to develop generation models based on the ideal condition of line contact between the cylindrical type of cutters and cam surfaces. However, due to manufacturing and assembly errors, contacts of a roller gear cam become point contacts rather than line contacts. The bearing contact, the undercutting condition and the assembly tolerance were studied based on the realistic of point contact model in this study. The capability of a cam mechanism for an acceptable lifecycle deeply depends on the stress distribution in the practical contact. When two elastic bodies with curved surface transmit loads from one to the other at the point or line contact, contact area can be developed, and accompanied by compressive contact stress, which may effect the lubrication property, even more, may cause fatigue damages on both of the engaged surfaces. For the idea to study of bearing contact properties, the principal directions and curvatures of the cam surface, the contact ellipse and the Hertzian contact stress are studied in sequence based on gearing theory. Undercutting is very detrimental to the kinematic and dynamic performance. Up to now, most studies on the undercutting condition of the roller gear cam were case by case. A mathematical model for the surface profile of the roller gear cams in dimensionless space is proposed. According to this model, the conditions for non-undercutting are generated with procedure to determine the feasible condition region that is free from undercutting is developed in the dimensionless space. This result can be employed with the design approach to determine the feasible region of design parameters. An integrity and robustness of optimization approach is developed that made engineers take account of all aspect of design, possibly and easily. The studies in this thesis can help engineers to improve the design and manufacturing with higher accuracy and quality of roller gear cam mechanisms. Finally, the concept of the robust assemble condition under the minimum variations caused by manufacturing errors is used to achieve the robust tolerance design. The tolerance algorithm is constructed based on the 3-D assembly model, the tooth contact analysis (TCA) technique and the condition number for the theory of matrix. The investigated results demonstrated in, but not limit to, understanding of the assembly nature of the roller gear cam, and can be easily employed for other type of tolerance design. The results are most helpful to the design and manufacturing of the roller gear cam mechanisms with high accuracy and quality.

The applications of roller gear cam mechanisms are widely used in industries. Indexing accuracy in the dwell period is one of the important features of roller gear cam mechanisms. Motion curves of roller gear cam mechanisms affect the output response signi- ficantly. In this thesis, a dynamic model for roller gear cam mechanisms is derived to simulate the vibra- tional response. Furthermore, an experimental appar- atus is built to measure the actual residual vibrati- ons of roller gear cam mechanisms. Comparing the re- sponce spectrums of the roller gear cam mechanisms designed by the rational B-spline curve to that of a roller gear cam drive defined by the modified sine curve shows that the indexing accuracy can be improved through the control of the cam motion curve.

This work develops a systematic methodology to design and analyze a roller-gear-cam type automatic tool change mechanism for vertical machining centers, and a prototype is built for testing the feasibility of the design. The subsystems of the automatic tool change mechanism, the extract and insert tool mechanism, the roller gear cam mechanism, and the push and pull tool mechanism, are introduced first, and coordinate transformation matrix, universal motion curve, and input-output time diagram are presented in order to design the cams of the three subsystems. For each subsystem, the universal motion curve and the input-output time diagram are used to design the motion curve of the cam. Coordinate transformation matrix, differential geometry, and theory of conjugate surfaces are used to derive equations of cam surface and cam curvature. Kinematic analysis of each subsystem is developed, and the joint force of each subsystem are analyzed based on the result of kinematic analysis and Newton''s law. Final-y, a prototype is built for experimental testing. The results prove the proposed design is feasible.

A roller gear cam index is composed of a 3D cam (input terminal) and one turret (output terminal) with several rollers radially mounted. The input terminal drives the output terminal to repeatedly generate the dwell and acting motion. The thesis aims to study the relation between the preload and transmission torque, and the results provide useful information to the design and manufacturing processes. According to the design variables and dimensional parameters of roller gear cam index, the criterion of the conjugation between the cam and the turret is first established. And then, the input torque is derived based on the output torque subject to various contact situations. Furthermore, the influences of the black size, the turret motion, the operation speed, and the indexing numbers on the preload are observed. Theoretical results are also compared to experimental ones to show the accuracy of the analysis.

An analysis of the dynamic responses of a roller gear cam (RGC) system is conducted in this article. Dynamic equations of the intermittent-motion of a RGC driven system are derived by employing the Lagrange’s equation. The motor driving torque variation and the time-varying characteristics of the roller dynamic parameters, i.e., the meshing stiffness and damping are considered in the dynamic model formulation. The proposed dynamic model is governed by a set of non-linear ordinary differential equations with periodic coefficients. The system responses are simulated by employing the sixth order Runge-Kutta iteration method. Effects of lacking torque, the friction torque, and the torque compensation on the system response are emphasized. Good agreements between the numerical and experimental results indicate that the proposed model is feasible and valid.

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a method for four-axis rough machining of the Roller Gear Cam ( R.G.C. ). This methoc allows manufacturers to choose four-axis milling machines in the rough machining stage of production, thereby decreasing the cost of implementing the five-axis machining center. First, based on the relationships between cutter and roller and the conjugate movements between roller and R.G.C., the direction of the tool-axis and the position of the tool-tip are calculated by coordinate transformation. To avoid overcut between the cutter and the design surface, the surface interference checking is performed and used as a basis to select the suitable radius of the cutter. In the case of interference between the machined surface and the design surface, a method for the cutter withdrawal is proposed to solve the problem. Then, a four-axis post-processor program is developed to convert the cutter location file to actual NC code. The methods proposed in this study were all proven through solid cutting simulation software and through a trail cut with model material. For the industrial example in this thesis, the time using the five-axis machine by the proposed methods is 30% of the original roughing time using the five-axis machine. So it decrease the machining cost. At the same time, in this study, the four-axis machine removed 87% of the roughing material, so the five-axis machine had to remove only the remaining 13%. The economic value of rough milling for the R.G.C in the four-axis machine by the proposed methods has been confirmed.

Roller Gear Cam mechanism(RGC)has been used widely in different automation mechanisms and all kinds of orientation mechanism. High speed and high accuracy of the RGC system is a tendency in high production automation. The interaction between the driving speed and torque of a high speed RGC system is investigated in this work. The effect of adding a torque compensation cam(TCC)on the improving of indexing precision of a RGC system is investigated in this thesis. The dynamic responses of a RGC system driven by a DC motor are conducted. Dynamic equations of the intermittent- motion of a RGC driven system are derived by using the Lagrange’s equation with the assumption of dual-stiffness. Furthermore, the effect of adding a torque compensation mechanism(TCM) such as torque compensation cam(TCC) or idle wheel on the improving of indexing precision of a RGC system is investigated in this work. The sixth order Runge-Kutta iteration method is employed in the system’s responses simulation. Variations of the driving torque, driving speed and residual vibration of a RGC system with different torque compensation devices are analyzed in this research. The simulated and measured results indicate that a RGC system attached with a TCC can improve its speed and torque fluctuation at the designed speed significantly. However, this compensation effect is quite sensitive to the driving speed. On the contrary, the compensation effect introduced by using an idle wheel is not so sensitive to the speed as the TCC does. The low cost and easy design are also the favorable factors for using an idle wheel to instead of an expensive TCC device.

Roller-gear cam mechanisms are used in various machines, and they are spatial cam mechanisms. The mechanisms can give dwell and/or index motions. Thus they can also be used as intermittent motion mechanisms. The curvature is one of the most important characteristics of the spatial cam. It can be used to determine if there is interference or undercutting, also it has close relationship to the stress and lubrication of the mechanism. The design and manufacture of roller-gear cams are quite difficult. The relevant reports are rarely found, especially those about their undercutting problems. Based on theory of conjugate surfaces, a methodology to determine the ranges of design parameters for avoiding undercutting, of roller-gear cam mechanisms with three types of meshing elements, is proposed in this study. Accordingly, the analytical-form solution of the range of parameter r, the radius of the cylindrical meshing element, for avoiding undercutting is derived; however, those of other parameters need to be determined by using a numerical method. Furthermore, those of all the parameters of the mechanisms with conical or hyperbolic meshing elements need also be decided with a numerical method. Examples are included to explain the usage of the proposed methodology and to verify its correctness. The methodology proposed in this study, can be used to determine the range of a design parameter to avoid undercutting of roller-gear-cam mechanisms, when other parameters are specified. It is a useful tool for designing the mechanisms. Thus, it is believed that the results of this study are valuable in both of the academic field and industrial applications.

Dwell and indexing motions are quite easy be given by using roller-gear cam mechanisms (RGCMs), so they are often used as intermittent motion mechanisms. Besides, they also have many good characteristics, so as to be used in various automatic machines, such as the automatic tool changers in machining centers. For RGCMs, the barrel cam transmits motion and power to the turret via the conjugate contact between the rib surfaces and rollers. Thus to design the rib surfaces well is very important to get good characteristics. Whereas if the geometric parameters are selected inappropriately, two side-surfaces of a rib could contact to or even intersect each other, such that the rib has not enough strength or even lose its transmitting function. Yet, relevant studies on rib-surface intersection have not been found in existing literatures. A model, for the judgment of whether two side-surfaces of a rib contact or not, is proposed. Consequently, mathematical models for the determination of the ranges of several geometric parameters to avoid rib-surface-intersection are developed. An example is given to demonstrate the usages of the proposed models and to exam their correctness. Feasible regions of geometric parameters, to avoid rib-surface-intersection and undercutting, are also given. For some existing automatic tool changers in machining centers, the RGCM has to be integrated with a five-bar linkage driven by the groove cam, which is cut on one side of the barrel cam, to provides translational motions of disengaging and inserting tools. A RGCM, whose turret can rotate and translate simultaneously, is proposed, such that the structure of such machines can be simplified. Except the models of surface design and curvature analysis been developed, those for determining the ranges of several geometric parameters to avoid rib-surface-intersection and undercutting, respectively, are also developed. Among them, a close-form solution, to determine the range of the roller radius for avoiding undercutting, is derived, if the rollers are cylindrical ones. Two examples are included to show the characteristics of the mechanism and to exam the correctness of the proposed models. In one of which, the translating direction of the turret is the same as its rotational axis; however, they are different in the other example. Feasible regions of geometric parameters, to avoid rib-surface-intersection and undercutting, are also given. In summary, except an innovative roller-gear cam mechanism is proposed, the proposed models for the determination of the ranges of the geometric parameters to avoid rib-surface-intersection and undercutting of RGCMs should be helpful in the design of these mechanisms. It is believed that these results are valuable in both of the academic field and industrial applications.
