Full textThe present research deals with a problem of medieval Bulgarian history that has never been studied in detail. It is about the use of art by the Bulgarian Tsar for his politics, including representations, both visual and textual, of the sovereign. The objective of the research is to trace the evolution of the model image of the Bulgarian sovereign, presented in the various artistic media. Even more, the aim is to identify distinctly Bulgarian elements which could indicate whether an ethnic identity existed at that time. Thus, the work is constructed in four main parts. Chapter I. The Historical Background and Political Ideology of the Second Bulgarian Empire (1185-1396) is divided into two sub-sections. The first traces the main features of the history of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Emphasis is placed on the political and socio-cultural progress taking place in society and which play an important role in State policy: the restoration of the State, the official recognition of its status and that of its leader, the independence of the Bulgarian Church, the policy of matrimonial marriages, etc. The aim is to trace the evolution of the political idea in order to understand the context of the artistic production resulting from the order of the sovereign. Four major periods are to be noted in Bulgarian history which delimit the changes taking place in society: the period of the reestablishment of the state (1185 - 1241), the period of weakening (1241 - 1300), the period of heyday (1300 - 1371) and the period of decline (1371 - 1396). Artistic production depended largely on it since political changes determined its development

Full textThe medieval European civilization is a deeply Christian one. Jesus is the only example to follow, an exquisite Rex gloriae, whose kingdom remains separate from the physical universe and from the earthly life. The monarch, in expectation of the eternal redemption, can aspire to imitate his “superior”. King's power is limited by the power of God (rex a Deo coronatus): the anointment and the coronation of the monarch are two stages in the same mythical rite, of an initiating character, by which a person is invested with the divine gift. But sacred does not mean holy, and the sovereign has to be worthy of God's trust every day (being a mimethes Christou, like in the Byzantine imperial tradition). The church, an active participant in the ceremony by which a new king is born (consacratio) cannot afford to be ignored and the alliance between the two institutions is welded by their common mission: the government, in the name of God, of the human community (respublica Christiana). Orthodoxy, the prevalence of customs and the maintenance of traditions, the lack or the inefficiency of striving for social renewal, the patriarchal organization of life after a Byzantine archetypal model, all these define the originality of the Romanian feudality within the framework of a larger cultural-european area. With reference to political creation, the domnia, this becomes complete with the institution of church: the ruling authority cannot depart from the religious element, which is constitutive of the state. The feudal monarchy is based on the support it offers to monachical life, in exchange of which it receives political support. The spirituality is in search of patrons, and the ruling power wants mystical support: the voivode-church relationship is thus, welded rapidly and on the long-term

Full textIn the middle ages, the Trinity of god is usually regarded as a théological subject. In Spain, in the context of coexistence of christians with jews and muslims, the Trinity was omnipresent and familiar to the laity. First, we show how the Trinity was inseparable with the themes of reconquista, conversion, proselytism. Then we analyse the part of the clergy in the promotion of Trinity as a polemic problem since wisigothic period. The last chapter insists on the role of the kings of Castille in the defense of the dogma and the ideological use of Trinity as an attribute of their image and power. The second part insists on the philosophical polemics. The spanish christians have mainly used philosophy of nature to convince the jews. The themes of cosmos, nature, divine attributes, natural generation in the trinitarian demonstrations give to Spain an intellectual originality in the west. The verses of the Old Testament, the exegese of Talmud, the verses of Coran, foundation of the polemis elsewhere, are used in Spain only in the mirror of philosophy. The last part tries to explain why and how in the XVth century Trinity became also a subject of individual devotion. The redemption of souls, visionnary litterature, devotion to the Virgen were inseparable with Trinity

Full textThe Swedish king was an elected king. The aim of this thesis is to study the representations of the ruling powers in such an elective kingdom by analysing some texts of law as well as the main narrative sources of the country. In the first part of my work, I seek to show how the rule by which the king was elected developed in the Swedish law acts. From the XIVe century, three stages were necessary to create a new king, the election, conducted as a performative ceremonial act, the eriksgata, which was a tour of the kingdom, and the coronation. In the other three parts of my thesis, I intend to show how the king was portrayed in didactic texts and historiographical works, in particular the Erikskronika, a full translation of which is appended
Morin-Prevot, Magali. "L'image du souverain en milieu anglais de Hastings au début de la guerre de Cent Ans." Paris 10, 2002. http://www.theses.fr/2002PA100189.
Full textStarting from the conquest of Hastings up to the start of the Hundred Years' War, the english king asserted his authority in a decisive manner within the christianized West, which at the same time was experiencing a significant upheaval and rebalancing between the various powers. Historical texts enable us to confirm this progression in front of the church, the major vassal powers, including foreign dignities. Netherless, it is important not to underestimate the use of images and edifices which contributed to this process. They were used as an immediate and tangible demonstration of regal power as well as leaving a permanent trace of their presence. The study of documentation from diverse artistic sources dating from english society during this period, notably coming from traditional, historie and legendary data, shows us elements set up by oponents in order to counteract this magnification of the king and thus creating a perpetual readjustement of the royal image ; by comparing similiar behaviour relating to other powerful princes living during the same time period, we are able to gain a clearer definition of the english phenomena. This study aims to distinguish between the methods used by the players in order to embelish their image, thus creating a monarchie ideôlogy, and rather to follow the progressive development of kingship

Full textIn France, in Burgundy and in England at the end of the Middle Ages, the princes prove to be generous in a structural way, almost by vocation. The aristocratic group is a privilegied beneficiary of their largesses. Liberality, puissamment anchored in a system of values, gives rise to the organization of a speech of ideological type. Maintining various comprehensions, mirrors of the princes, chivalric literature, chronicles, poems multiply advice and adressed recommendations of largesse to the princes. Avarice looks absolute burin, extravagance is stigmatized. On course for Largesse, often, the noble men must not be forgotten. Accounts and letters of gifts show that the noble group really received numerous gifts. Aristocracy, heterogeneous and divided group, appears in all its diversity. Gifts for service returned, by assistance, by friendship, during holidays, are a currency. In the circulation of given property, money enjoys an incontestable primacy, without being exclusive. At the same time, princely gifts are also the instrument of a domination. They are a system which shows a political building founded on the research of interest, attraction of material property, authority, prestige. Objectives followed by the prince by the prince and the nobility, two transactors in the gift-relationship, can diverge , or even be antipathetic. The cohesion of the model of largesse, the realization of he liberalities are still put in evil by difficult financial contexts, by institutions as the court or the princely administration. In the political field, the princes are then called to clear themselves, to rationalize their liberality. However, these disadvantages did not remove the link of largesse, either in facts, or in presentations. It enjoys a special longevity

Full textThe king-lists, written in the Early Western Middle Ages, are chronological documents that mention the name of the rulers that ruled over the same people. The researchers mainly studied these sources to determine the duration of those rulers’ reigns. We propose to study these texts from both a philological and historical perspective. Our thinking is based on three areas of research : the drafting of lists, their distribution and their use. It makes possible to determine the features of this form of writing. First of all, we study three cases of lists that go with civil codes laws from the Early Middle Ages: the list of Lombard kings and the Edict of Rothari, the list of Visigoth kings and the Liber Iudiciorum, the list of Frankish kings and the Lex salica. We explain why and how theses documents are written and disseminated and, from that, we show that the copying of these texts, which express an intention about the royal past of a people, meets both political and ideological issues. In a second step, we propose a synthesis about the king-lists. We try to determine why these texts are part of the Roman written cultural heritage. The identification of their authors makes it possible to highlight the roles assigned to this document at the time of its creation and the methods used during the listing. It appears that the elaboration and circulation of theses are for practical uses as well as memory and political issues

Full textThis is an interdisciplinary work that covers a long chronological period and a large geopolitical area. It main source is based on images. The concept of the dissertation follows Mauss's gift but points out a fundamental inversion, which came with christianity. The goal is to explain some of the fundamental mechanisms in the medieval society and in the Christian's model constructed and reconstructed in the Byzantine tradition by analysing the two principal actors in medieval society : God and the Sovereign. The two parts of the dissertation are organised around these two actors : the first concerns the crown as a gift of God, and the second is about the gift of the book and the small model of the church by the sovereign. These "exchanges" are placed in their eschatological and soteriological context. Two levels of reading are proposed : one joints the phenomenon and the manifestation of the gift, the other one isolates the gesture of gift in the picture

Full textIn a time in which plenty academic works in the field of Literary and Gender Studies recognize certain involvement of Christine de Pizan in the political literature of the late Middle Ages, the study of her political thought in its whole complexity remains underdeveloped. For that reason, this study portraits the core of the multidimensional contribution of Christine de Pizan to the medieval politics, which is the critical understanding of an innovative and complex schema of power structuring. Her ideas went far away from the writers of her time by devising the royalty itself as a solid architectural system. To embrace her ideas is necessary to understand the reflections about the monarchy in her political writings of the early fifteenth century. At the heart of his political thought, the wise king, an emerging figure of the clerical tradition of the thirteenth century, seems to become a king architect and his kingdom a beautiful architecture, as a perfect political society. Wisdom itself seems to be a force of transformation in society by acting on the political and social structure of the past, deeply marked by the christian tradition. This form of intelligence, both theoretical and practical, produces a whole reconfiguration of social relations and government frameworks. If we think of society as a living architecture, totally contained in the church of the Middle Ages, we can expect at the end of this time the birth of the new social configurations, such as the city, the principality and the kingdom. Now, it is by appropriating the ecclesiastical sacrality that these new powers are configured. Due to this process, we can speak of an architectural sovereignty, as well as a governmental science, whose origins go back to the medieval era and not to modernity. It is not to the modern but to the medieval writers that we owes the introduction, the interpretation, and the revival of the rich Aristotelian notion of «architectonic science», even «architectonic», whose medieval trajectory remains unexplored. Christine’s genius consists in highlighting the concrete aspect of the principal science, by crossing theoretical and practical registers, through the facts and mores of Charles V especially in her book Les fais et bonnes meurs du sage roy Charles V. The author considers the figure of the “King” as a real «suppost», a kind of experimental matrix from which to create the best science of government. This scientific conception opens the way to an entirely experimental analysis of the royal figure, which introduced the idea of governmental rationality linked to an instrumental conception of science. The Aristotelian approach allows the writer to open the game of earthly positives and to think about the city of men, in other words, politics, without recourse to ecclesiastical power. By following the path marked by Aristotelians, Christine de Pizan went further than them in the application of aristotelian wisdom to her model of wise king. By developing as much as possible the premises of architectonics, with the main science ‒politics‒ and subordinate sciences, the writer enable to take a fundamental leap forward: a change from the traditional literate king of mirrors for princes to the wise king of aristotelian nature. As we can see the wise king of Christine de Pizan appears as a new type of architect, whose power does not depend on his role as the head of the Church, nor on the ritual of the consecration conducted by the ecclesiastics. In other words, the wise king of Christine de Pizan aware of the first causes, is at the same time philosopher and theologian. Owner of theoretical and practical philosophy, the wisdom of the king appears as the substance of the French royalty and gives form to the kingdom of France. The king as the architect of the kingdom breaks the power of the Church, by questioning his role of being the only institution capable of embodying the substance of Christian society

Full textConcepts of the past are most important parts in the formation of individual and collective identity. Medieval authors deliberately used the historical narratives as a means of enhancing the cohesion of respective social groups, usually the ruling strata of society. The doctoral thesis focuses on re-interpretations and exploitations of the past in France and Bohemia during the 14th century, on the role of historical narratives in the self-representation of the ruling dynasties Luxembourg and Valois, and on the perception of their own role in the history. Main question of the thesis is the social and literary context of the shaping of an imagination of the past: detailed comparison between the Latin and vernacular historiographical production at the royal courts in France and Bohemia bring also crucial observations as to the ways and means of cultural transfer between the respective centres of power

Full textMy thesis is at the crossroads of social, cultural and technical history. It deals with the duties of the Carver who was entrusted with a major assignment at the Royal Court: he was given the delicate task of carving the food and serving up the dishes for his Lord. This office, first performed by the royal officers, became a profession at the end of the middle ages and at the beginning of the renaissance period, as may be attested by the multiplication of treaties on carving in Spain and Italy issued at that time. The antiquity of the "arte Cisaria" (1423) led me to wonder about its influence on the Catalan and Italian treaties on carving which were the established later on. I also wondered afterwards to what extent these treaties complied with the established norms. Finally, in order to understand the place occupied by the Carver within the Royal Court, I focused my prosopographic research on the reigns of the Aragonese kings Ferdinand I, and his son Alphonse V

Full textThis thesis focuses on the in-depth study of representations of one of the greatest kings of the Old Testament: the King David. This doctoral work will try to explore the biblical figure in the arts of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance in Europe. The Holy Bible recounts the eventful life of this famous king who became, through centuries, a model for the christian princes. In fact, it fit perfectly with the aspirations of the princes who wanted to follow the example of this royal personage and appropriate his prestige. In this issue, the figure of David appears to be incredibly wide, successively little shepherd, anointed, brave warrior, musician and psalmist, king of Israel, women lover, sinner and penitent. Every facets of this complex character inspired, each in its own way, spiritual, political and artistic thought

Full textIf the renewal of king's peace in the XIIth century is a well-Known phenomenon, its blossoming in the XIIIth and XIVth centuries is less-Known. The period which separates the reigns of Philippe Auguste and Charles le Bel – 1180-1328 – is none-The-Less decisive. During this period, thanks to a very favourable context, kingship succeeded in setting itself up as an eminent peacemaker of its kingdom, finally replacing God's ancient peace by king's peace. The challenge is however immense. More than anything, three ravages which the crown strives to fight, keep on threatening the peace : violence on public roads, illicit associations, and wars arising between subjects. In their resolute fight, kings are prompted by the thought of the ecclesiastics who, referring to the antique carolingian tradition, insist on reminding the kings that their duty is to work for their kingdom tranquillity. The Aristotelian rebirth reinforces this rhetoric : in the light of Aristote, theologians emphasize that peace is the ultimate aim of a king's duty. Stimulated by those enlightened discourses, Capetians try to refrain the disorders generated by highwaymen, warmongers and subjects who join together. To achieve their goal they choose to act as legislators : they enact numerous laws, some local some general, which firmly condemn those dangerous criminals. Enforcing these precepts meets with strong resistances and king's policy goes through real vicissitudes. However, king's policy reinforces its sovereignty and achieves concrete results. Sources attest that the crown servants undertake numerous actions aiming at punishing troublemakers who violate the king's law. The crown determination is particularly obvious against those who take part in wars and are regularly sentenced for their wrongdoing by the king's justice. Hence by expending all their efforts and energy, Capetians succeed in establishing some peaceful order on which their successors the Valois will lean

Full textThis research is aimed to investigate how the royal ideology of Sasanian era was developed and adapted in the Muslim era. It analyses the different aspects of Sasanian kingship, the expansion of its cultural influence in the outskirts of the Empire and beyond, the Arab conquest, the transition and conversion of Iranian people and its élites. Studying the «Persian renaissance» during the early ‘Abbāsid caliphate, we can see that some pre-Islamic traditions did not disappear, but, on the contrary, were encouraged by the Iranian dynasties which became independent from the second half of the 9th century. Caspian regions, former provinces of the Sasanian empire with a quite special role in the panorama of Islamization, occupy an important place in our essay. Through the collected data, we finally analyse the Perso-Islamic synthesis operated by the two major antagonist dynasties of the 11th century, the Būyids and Ghaznavids, which borrowed a lot of elements from Sasanian ceremonial

Full textThis doctorate (Ph.D.) research studies the representation of Syrian kingship during the Amorite period (ca. 2000-1600 B.C), essentially through glyptic evidence, supplemented by sculpture, wall paintings, and written sources from the same period. The methodology is anchored in defining a precise iconographic corpus. This step allows revising past conclusions and establishing new identifications for the king’s role in artistic as well as written expressions. A major accomplishment is the identification of objects that derive from clear, stratified archaeological and cultural contexts. After defining the spatial and chronological frame, this study offers a brief review of the twenty-five sites from which the material is assembled. They are located in the Middle-Euphrates valley and divide between those in the northern and southern segments. Characteristics for a “royal figure” are identified and then defended. Iconography permits to distinguish diverse models of the “royal for each of the Syrian regions. The models divide into:1. Main models: the warrior-king, the king-priest, the king of “Syrian” type2. Secondary models: royal officials or the “duplication” of the royal figureIn addition, “miscellaneous figures” are also classified. On the epigraphic level, in this study there is liberal use of information from the archive of Mari as well as of Terqa, discriminating between materials derived from epistolary, religious, political, and administrative documents, as the ruler acts as a priest, dispenser of justice, warrior, or family man. A special chapter is devoted the interrelationship among kings, personal, and state gods. There is also consideration of funerary rituals (kispum) as well as the issue of the deified king. The study takes into consideration the following issues: the royal image of Syrian kings as shown in regional perspective, the connection between glyptic arts and their archeology, and the religious basis of royal ideology during the Amorite period. The dissertation includes a second part in which is catalogued over four hundred iconographic objects or images. Full textThe present study focuses on loyalty conflicts between bishops and kings in post-roman Gaul. The main focus is on twenty case studies (= “Teil II”), aiming to analyze specific conflict situations during the years between 466 and 614 (hence covering the Visigothic and early Merovingian periods). The results of these case studies are summarized and evaluated in the third part (= “Teil III”) of this study. In contrast to previous research on the late antique and early medieval episcopate dealing with different aspects of episcopal authority, the adopted approach consciously looks at situations where episcopal power was challenged and sometimes broken. On the one hand, the question of what kind of political and social constellations did bring about the studied conflicts proved to be instructive (“Teil III”, chapter 1). On the other hand, looking at the way how contemporaries dealt with these situations (that were, after all, quite common phenomena) promises instructive insights into the relation between kings and their episcopate (III, 2)

Full textThe death of the kings of the Iberian Peninsula was organized as a show, with various references: the ritual initiated by Fernando the 1 st of Castilla and Leon in the XI th century, the tales of the death of the Cid and the biblical models. From the XII th century on, embalming procedures are found. Kings were buried with important funerary material, including in some cases a pets' skeleton. Burial was made near of relics, moving those across the land if necessary. Kings also made sure of receiving prayers by modifying pilgrimages roads. One must also note a change in the status of the dead kings who, at the end of the XIII th century, have virtues approaching those of a dead saint. Buried at first in buildings adjoining the church, their kings eventually obtain to be buried inside the church, between the choir and the altar or even in the sanctuary itself. The election of the burial place has two directing principles: the expression of the dynasty, through a burial near important predecessors and personal devotion, which is the only explanation for some sepultures far from other kings. Inside the building, the relative location of the tombs instigates, through the relations it creates, a rewriting of history, a dimension which the reorganization of toms make even more clear. An important phenomenon is the fidelity of Iberian kings to the sarcophagus, which remains in use up to the early XIV th century. Nevertheless, some kings choose other forms, like recumbent figures or tomb slabs. As the iconography becomes more complex, it underlines the political dimension of the tombs, multiplying references to the wisigothic imperium or to the Carolingian or Germanic empire
