Abstract:
Thesis (M. Eng. in Logistics)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, 2004.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 46-47).
This thesis investigates financial results from RFID integration at product level in semiconductor manufacturing. The thesis explores how the technology might act in concert with other significant logistics tools to create return on investment. In this case, the use of RFID, along with postponement and Kanban practices, may help a manufacturer better align supply with central processing unit (CPU) demand. The resulting economic benefits are explored through yield scenarios. It is important to note that the thesis explores this topic without the benefit of empirical data. Consequently, a number of assumptions were made; these assumptions may affect the validity of the observations. Nonetheless, the study demonstrates an innovative approach that may contribute to new models of creative problem solving.

Abstract:

Abstract:
MBA Professional Report
We explore whether benefits are being realized in RFID initiatives that are not being captured by traditional Return on Investment analysis. Utilizing the Naval Supply System Report, which found RFID technology does not create a positive ROI, we surveyed the participants to find benefits they received that were not addressed. 100% of the participants reported increased customer knowledge and increased timeliness of information. While this finding may not be enough to support the implementation of new technologies, it at least supports the idea that the new technologies do have real benefits. This report is therefore intended as a tool to be used by the Navy in addressing the idea that traditional ROI does not capture these intangible benefits. We acknowledge the fact that further study of this important issue is needed.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the process undertaken and the challenges encountered in staging Alfred Jarry’s Ubu Roi as part of the UBC Department of Theatre and Film’s season at the Frederic Wood Theatre, March 20 to April 5, 2014. As outlined in the following pages, I attempted to find a way to honor the controversy wrought by the original production in 1896 in a theatrical ecology where shocking an audience is extremely challenging. By drawing inspiration from Ubu’s Paris premiere and also from the plays origins in a collective schoolboy imagination, I created a framework within which we presented our interpretation of Jarry’s classic play.

Banakas, Duvauchelle Isabelle. "Orphée-roi de Victor Segalen." Paris 4, 1986. http://www.theses.fr/1986PA040409.

Full text
Abstract:
This lyrical drama created in collaboration with Claude Debussy in 1907, seems to be a new interpretation of the myth of Orpheus. It shows Victor Segalen's aspirations for all aspects of beauty that he rediscovered in Claude Debussy's music and Gustave Moreau's works. His first aim was to write a drama which would unify sounds and colors and poetry to praise that fusion. But that project was too ambitious and prouved to be impossible to achieve ; for, music had difficulties to be grafted to a text which referred to sounds. Though Victor Segalen's work was influenced by symbolists, the author treated the character of Orpheus in a new and personnal way. He is no longer the musician who is in love with Eurydice but an exceptional being, gifted with the mission of teaching men the magic virtue of sounds ; an "exote" whose voice and lyre alone allow us to better understand what Victor Segalen calls " the divers " : he meant what goes beyond our senses. But, in order to achieve his mission among men, he must struggle against the real world, this concrete form of the human and vulgar behavior towards sounds. Men do not understand the "exote" who sings but does not speak because they are too much enslaved by the sense of sight and the sense of touch. Eurydice, alone will be able to help him build his realm made of sounds and the woman's part played in…

Full text
Abstract:
Between the 1259 Paris Treaty of Bretigny-Calais in 1360, the pays gascon (both lands and people) found itself at the heart of a conflict opposing the king of England (and duke of Aquitaine) and the French king. The baronage and townships were both bound by oaths of homage which had become established under Edward I and were expected to remain faithful to their Duke. During the 1294-1303 war, and despite the French occupation, the consensus support for their legitimate Lord won the day over the Capetien monarchy. However, under the reign of Edward II, loyalties were reversed. Manifold contestation of Ducal authority was followed by the resumption of the 1324 war which resulted in a partition of Gascony. Until 1339, those who vowed allegiance to the French King outnumbered supporters of the Duke ; nevertheless Bordeaux, Bayonne and Dax continued to defend what little remained of the Anglo-Gascon dukedom. It was not until the treaties of 1360 that this latter was returned to Edward III. The choice of allegiance was influenced by the initial geographic situation of the local authorities in power and the effects of the war. In fact, the people's unfaltering attachment to their land led them to lend support either to their legilimate Duke or the French monarchy. Conflict between the Gascon people themselves also provoked antagonism amongst the baronage and township communities. The King-Duke's subjects were awarded large areas of his domain in a effort to guard their loyalty. In comparaison to the other dominions (Wales, Ireland), Brittany or Normandy, the Gascony remained untouched by the encroachment of the Etat moderne in the mid 14th century

Abstract:
Optimization plays an important role in many methods routinely used in statistics, machine learning and data science. Often, implementations of these methods rely on highly specialized optimization algorithms, designed to be only applicable within a specific application. However, in many instances recent advances, in particular in the field of convex optimization, make it possible to conveniently and straightforwardly use modern solvers instead with the advantage of enabling broader usage scenarios and thus promoting reusability. This paper introduces the R Optimization Infrastructure which provides an extensible infrastructure to model linear, quadratic, conic and general nonlinear optimization problems in a consistent way. Furthermore, the infrastructure administers many different solvers, reformulations, problem collections and functions to read and write optimization problems in various formats.

Full text
Abstract:

McCullouch, Bob. INDOT Research Program Benefit Cost Analysis—Return on Investment for Projects Completed in FY 2019. Purdue University, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5703/1288284317279.

Full text
Abstract:
To demonstrate the value of research and its implementation, the Governor’s Office requested an annual financial analysis of the INDOT Research Program to determine the return on the research investment (ROI). This report is for the 35 research projects that completed in FY 2019. The ROI analysis will supplement the annual IMPACT report by adding a more rigorous quantitative benefit cost analysis (BCA) to the Research Program. Previous financial analyses used the approach of calculating net present values of cash flows to determine a benefit cost ratio and this report uses the same approach. Additionally, an overall program rate of return (ROI) is reported and will be accumulated over time into a rolling 5-year average. The ROI is expressed as a BCA ratio, which is commonly used by State DOTs and national transportation research agencies when expressing the return on the research investment. By using total program costs in the analysis, rather than just the individual project cost, a very conservative BCA ratio is obtained. Interestingly, the quantified cost savings from a single project frequently underwrites the cost of the entire research program in a fiscal year.

Abstract:
To demonstrate the value of research and its implementation, the Governor’s Office requested an annual financial analysis of the INDOT Research Program to determine the return on the research investment (ROI). The current financial analysis is for research projects that completed in FY 2021. Analyses on previous year’s projects is necessary primarily due to the time it takes some project outcomes to be implemented, extending into the following year. Therefore, the FY 2021 analysis is completed in calendar 2022. Additionally, an overall program rate of return (ROI) is reported and will be accumulated over time into a rolling 6-year average.
