Full text
Abstract:
Gerhard Rohlfs was born in Vegesack near Bremen in 1831. He was a frequent traveler in Africa, and in 1865-67 he became the first European to travel from north Africa across the Sahara to the west African coast, from Tripoli to Borno, then through Bauchi and Keffi to Loko, thence down the Benue to its confluence with the Niger at Lokoja, which he reached on 28 March 1867. From there, he proceeded upstream along the Niger to Raba, delivering presents to Masaba of Nupe. From Raba, he traveled overland through Yorubaland to Lagos. In 1868 he published an account of the first half of this journey, from north Africa to Borno, in Petermann's Mitteilungen. In 1872 his account of the second half, “Gerhard Rohlfs' Reise durch Nord-Afrika vom Mittelländischen Meere bis zum Busen von Guinea, 1865 bis 1867, 2. Hälfte: von Kuka nach Lagos (Bornu, Bautschi, Saria, Nupe, Yoruba),” also appeared in Petermann's. A later publication, Quer durch Afrika, which appeared in 1874-75, covered the entire journey.Rohlfs' accounts of his travels in west Africa south of the Sahara have up to now been greatly neglected. The works mentioned above have never been published in English translation, which no doubt goes some way to explain this neglect. Rohlfs' information on his stay in Kuka (the capital of Borno) and his visits to Bauchi and Nupe have been cited by some scholars, at least. Very few, however, appear to have consulted his description of the last leg of his 1866-67 journey, in which he proceeded from the Niger south through Yorubaland to Lagos, visiting Share, Ilorin, Iwo, Ibadan, and parts of Ijebuland on the way.

We prove that a quasi-free flow on [Formula: see text] has the Rohlin property if and only if the associated crossed product is purely infinite and simple and that the quasi-free flows on [Formula: see text] with the Rohlin property are cocycle conjugate with each other. The latter result also holds for any Cuntz algebra [Formula: see text] with m < ∞. We also give some remarks on Rohlin flows on a unital separable nuclear purely infinite simple C*-algebra.

Abstract:
AbstractWe are concerned with a unital separable nuclear purely infinite simple C*-algebra A satisfying UCT with a Rohlin flow, as a continuation of [12]. Our first result (which is independent of the Rohlin flow) is to characterize when two central projections in A are equivalent by a central partial isometry. Our second result shows that the K-theory of the central sequence algebra A′ ∩ Aω (for an ω ∈ βN\N) and its fixed point algebra under the flow are the same (incorporating the previous result). We will also complete and supplement the characterization result of the Rohlin property for flows stated in [12].

Kumar, Naresh. "The provision of infrastructure services in Rohtak and Bhiwani districts, Haryana, India, 1981-98 : a geographical analysis." Thesis, Durham University, 1999. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/4396/.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract: Provision of three basic infrastructure services (namely education, health and transport) in Rohtak and Bhiwani Districts (India) is examined using three types of data: 1. 507 households spreading in 8 villages, 2. Informal discussion with villagers and services providers in both districts, and 3. Secondary data for 921 villages and 14 towns and cities. These data were analysed using both statistical and GIS techniques. The analysis reveals that quantitatively there has been considerable expansion of education and health services over a period of fifteen years (1981 to 1996), and the average distance people have to travel to access these services has also declined significantly. But little evidence was found of any logical criterion being followed for the location of new services and the upgrading of existing services. Consequently, there was no improvement in the efficiency level (measured in terms of demand and geographical distance) of existing infrastructure services (both public and private); moreover, the efficiency level of private services was significantly lower than that of public services. It was further observed that the poor and women had relatively poor access to education, health and transport; and income, caste, gender, education level and village location had significant impact on access to and utilisation of basic services. In the study area, public services were functioning sub-optimally and service users were not satisfied with the quality of services; a significant proportion of clients had to rely on private services. Although public services may not be available in all the villages, the main focus should now be on improving the quality of existing services. Therefore, a solid transport network is needed in rural areas so that the availability of frequent and reliable transport services facilitate villagers' access to quality services even if located at distant places. Thus far, the role of the public in service provision has been minimal, which may be one of the reasons for poor quality of public services. Therefore, the active involvement of clients (service users) is essential in the operation, maintenance and monitoring of basic services in order to improve their quality and efficient functioning, and to effectively cater for people's needs in general and deprived sections of the society in particular.

Abstract:
Background: Gestational trophoblastic disease is a spectrum of cellular proliferation arising from the placental villous trophoblast. Gestational triphoblastic neoplasia (GTN) is a collective term for GTD that invade locally or metastasize. GTD includes hydatidiform mole (complete and partial) and GTN include invasive mole, choricocarcinoma, placental site trophoblastic tumor and epitheliod trophoblastic tumor. Aim: To evaluate clinicopathological profile, treatment pattern and clinical outcome in patients with gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN). Materials and Methods: Twelve cases of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia treated between 2012 to November 2015 in deptt of Radiotherapy – II, PGIMS, Rohtak were evaluated in this retrospective study. Data was analyzed on the basis of age, histopathology, stage, type of treatment received and treatment related toxicities. Disease free survival was estimated. Results: Out of 12 women 7 (58 %) had hydatidiform mole, 4 (33%) invasive mole and 01 (8%) had choriocarcinoma. All the cases were given chemotherapy. Two patients had low risk disease. Among high risk group seven patients had score of less than 7 and five patients had risk score of 7 or higher. Five patients were given single agent methotrexate, seven patients received multidrug regimens. All patients are on regular follow up. One patient (high risk group) expired as she did not receive treatment. Conclusion: GTN are rare and proliferative disorders with proper diagnosis and treatment most of the cases are amenable to treatment with favorable outcome.

Abstract:
Aims: To analyze pattern of distant failure, site of metastases, number of metastases and duration in patient with carcinoma of cervix treated with concomitant chemoradiation. Materials and Methods: From May 2011 to December 2015, 73 patients of carcinoma cervix who treated with radical treatment (concomitant chemoradiation followed by 3 session of HDR brachytherapy) with distant metastases presented at Department of Radiotherapy-II, Pt BDS PGIMS, Rohtak were evaluated retrospectively. Results: Most of the female with metastases were in age group of 50-59 years (82%), 12% were in age group >60 and 6% were in < 50 year age group. Initial stage of presentation was 40% (29/73), 48% (35/73) and 12% (9/73) in stage II, III and IVA respectively. Out of which 93% had squamous cell carcinoma histology and 7% were having adenocarcinoma at time of presentation. Among them 49/73 (67%) had solitary metastases, 19/73 (26%) had two metastatic sites and 5/73 (7%) had multiple metastatic sites. Commonest site of distant metastases was paraaortic lymphnodes in 40% of cases, followed by liver, lungs, brains, cervical lymph nodes and one case of cutaneous metastases was also seen. Paraaortic lymphnodes, liver and lung metastases present in maximum number of patient with multiple metastases. Salvage chemotherapy given in 51 cases, palliative radiotherapy (30 Gy or 20 Gy) in 37 cases whereas in 5% of cases single session with 8 Gy was given. Conclusion: A regular and long term follow up of patients with carcinoma of cervix is necessary to detect distant metastases. With early and proper diagnosis and treatment a better outcome could be achieved.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years closed loop supercritical carbon dioxide Brayton cycles have drawn the attention of many researchers as they are characterized by a higher theoretic efficiency and smaller turbomachinery size compared to the conventional steam Rankine cycle for power generation. Currently, first prototypes of this emerging technology are under development and thus small scale sCO2 turbomachinery needs to be developed. However, the design of sCO2 turbines faces several new challenges, such as the very high rotational speed and the high power density. Thus, the eligibility of well-established radial inflow gas turbine design principles has to be reviewed regarding their suitability for sCO2 turbines. Therefore, this work reviews different suggestion for optimum velocity ratios for gas turbines and aims to re-establish it for sCO2 turbines. A mean line design procedure is developed to obtain the geometric dimensions for small scale sCO2 radial inflow turbines. By varying the specific speed and the velocity ratio, different turbine configurations are set up. They are compared numerically by means of CFD analysis to conclude on optimum design parameters with regard to maximum total-to-static efficiency. Six sets of simulations with different specific speeds between 0.15 and 0.52 are set up. Higher specific speeds could not be analyzed, as they require very high rotational speeds (more than 140k RPM) for small scale sCO2 turbines (up to 150kWe). For each set of simulations, the velocity ratio that effectuates maximum efficiency is identified and compared to the optimum parameters recommended for radial inflow turbines using subcritical air as the working fluid. It is found that the values for optimum velocity ratios suggested by Rohlik (1968) are rather far away from the optimum values indicated by the conducted simulations. However, the optimum values suggested by Aungier (2005), although also established for subcritical gas turbines, show an approximate agreement with the simulation results for sCO2 turbines. Though, this agreement should be studied for a wider range of specific speeds and a finer resolution of velocity ratios. Furthermore, for high specific speeds in combination with high velocity ratios, the pressure drop of the designed turbines is too high, so that the outlet pressure is beyond the critical point. For low specific speeds in combination with low velocity ratios, the power output of the designed turbines becomes very small. Geometrically, turbines with low specific speeds and high velocity ratios are characterized by very small blade heights, turbines with high specific speeds and small velocity ratios by very small diameters.

Abstract:
Aim: To evaluate feasibility of concomitant chemoradiation with weekly cisplatin and gemcitabine, and comparing the advantage of using this regimen over cisplatin alone in terms of disease control and toxicities in management of locally advanced carcinoma cervix. Materials and Methods: The study has been conducted on fifty previously untreated, histopathologically proven FIGO stage II B - IV A patients of carcinoma cervix, attending the Department of Radiotherapy, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak for definitive treatment by radiation therapy. The patients were divided randomly in two groups of 25 patients each. Group I received cisplatin 40 mg/m2 and gemcitabine 125 mg/m2 with concomitant external beam radiotherapy 50 Gy/25 fractions/5 weeks, followed by intracavitary high dose rate brachytherapy 7 Gy to point A, for 3 times, once in a week. Group II received concomitant chemotherapy with cisplatin 40 mg/m2 weekly alone while radiotherapy schedule were same as in group I. Results: Total treatment duration in group I and II were 9-11 and 8-10 weeks respectively. Complete response rate in group I and II were 92% and 80%. Grade III skin and mucosal reactions was 20% in group I and none in group II. Diarrhoea was 24% in group I & 8% in group II. Grade II & III leucopenia was seen in 28% and 4% cases of group I & group II respectively. Upper gastrointestinal and renal toxicities were comparable in both arms. After six month of follow up, no evidence of disease was seen in 92% and 80% cases of group I and group II. Conclusion: If the toxicity is managed adequately in platinum based doublet group, it may produce improvement in response. Study is ongoing.

Such a comparison is not only a key part of assessing how well the tool performed, but also for an API 1163 evaluation and any subsequent use of the ILI data. The development of unity (1-1) plots and the associated regression analysis are commonly used to provide the basis for predicting the likelihood of leaks or failures from unexcavated ILI calls. Combining such analysis with statistically active corrosion methods into perhaps a probability of exceedance (POE) study helps develop an integrity maintenance plan for the years ahead. The theoretical underpinnings of standard regression analysis are based on the assumption that the independent variable (often thought of as x) is measured without error as a design variable. The dependent variable (often labeled y) is modeled as having uncertainty or error. Pipeline companies may run their regressions differently, but ILI to field excavation regressions often use the ILI depth as the x variable and field depth as the y variable. This is especially the case in which a probability of exceedance analysis is desired involving transforming ILI calls to predicted depths for a comparison to a threshold of interest such as 80% wall thickness. However, in ILI to field depth regressions, both the measured depths can have error. Thus, the underlying least squares regression assumptions are violated. Often one common result is a regression line that has a slope much less than the ideal 1-1 relationship. Reduced Major Axis (RMA) Regression is specifically formulated to handle errors in both the x and y variables. It is not commonly found in the standard literature but has a long pedigree including the 1995 text book Biometry by Sokal and Rohlf in which it appears under the title of Model II regression. In this paper we demonstrate the potential improvements brought about by RMA regression. Building on a solid comparison between ILI data and excavations provides the foundation for more accurate predictions and management plans that reliably provide longer range planning. This may also result in cost savings as the time between ILI runs might be lengthened due to a better analysis of such important data.

Abstract:
Aims and Objectives: To determine and evaluate the difference/s, in terms of tumor control and side effects, between weekly and three weekly cisplatin concomitant with external beam radiotherapyfor locally advanced carcinoma of cervix. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted in Radiotherapy Department, University of Health Sciences, Rohtak (India), on sixty previously untreated, histopathologically proven patients of locally advanced carcinoma of uterine cervix. The patients were treated with External Beam Radiotherapy (EBRT) 50 Gy/25 fractions over 5 weeks and concomitant cisplatin, followed by intra-cavitary HDR brachytherapy (ICBT) 700 cGy to point A; three times, once in a week. The patients were assigned randomly either of two groups of 30 patients each. In Group I (Study Group) the patients received three weekly cisplatin 75 mg/m2 for 2 cycles whilein Group II (Control Group) the patients received weekly cisplatin 40 mg/m2 for 5 cycles. Evaluation of response and toxicity was done weekly during treatment and monthly thereafter up to six months. The data thus obtained was assessed and analysed using LaMorte statistical tool. The study was approved by Ethical Committee of the institute and quality was periodically monitored by senior consultant and guide. Results: Stage wise disease response in study and control respectively at the end of treatment was as follows: Stage IIA - CR (80% vs 100%), PR (20% vs 0%); Stage IIB - CR (80% vs 76.47%), PR (20% vs 23.53%); Stage IIIA - CR (60% vs 100%), PR (40% vs 0%); Stage IIIB - CR (60% vs 60%), PR (40% vs 20%), NR(0% vs 20%). Stage wise disease status at the end of sixth month follow up was as follows: Stage IIA – NED (80% vs 100%), RD (20% vs 0%); Stage IIB - NED (80% vs 76.67%), RD (20% vs 23.53%); Stage IIIA - NED (60% vs 100%), RD (40% vs 0%); Stage IIIB - NED (60% vs 60%), RD (40% vs 40%). Tumor response was not significantly different in the two groups with respect to age distribution, rural/urban distribution, histopathological distribution and treatment interruption. Maximum level of hematological toxicity (WHO criteria) observed in study and control group respectively at the end of treatment was as follows: Anaemia; Grade II - 4 (13.33%) in both the groups, leukopenia; Grade II – 1 (3.33%) vs 0 (0%). The worst acute skin reactions observed by the end of treatment in Group I and II respectively were Grade II – 2 (6.67%) vs 0 (0%). The worst acute mucosal reactions were Grade II - 5(16.66%) vs 0 (0%). Upper gastrointestinal toxicity (Grade II & III) was 16.7% versus 13.3% respectively. Lower gastrointestinal toxicity (Grade II & III) was 30.0% versus 36.7%. No significant weight loss was observed in either of the groups. Though, all the patients completed the intended treatment, treatment interruption for more than a week was observed in 10 (33.33%) vs 8 (26.67%) patients respectively, due to acute toxicities. Conclusion: Three weekly cisplatin, concomitant with radiation seems to be the potential, effective and acceptable alternate as standard of treatment for locally advanced carcinoma cervix; especially for increased work load and limited resource setups.
