Huebner, Timothy S. The Taney Court. ABC-CLIO, 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216022459.

Full text
Abstract:
An exploration of the U.S. Supreme Court during an era of dramatic sectionalism, slavery, and the Civil War. The Taney Court: Justices, Rulings, and Legacypresents an in-depth analysis of the decisions and impact of the U.S. Supreme Court during the three-decade tenure of Roger B. Taney, one of the most important chief justices in U.S. history. A careful analysis of landmark decisions such asDred Scott v. Sandford,Charles River Bridge v. Warren Bridge, andPrigg v. Pennsylvaniashows how the court interpreted issues of commerce, contracts, slavery, and separation of powers, and how, despite its perception as being pro-states rights, it actually expanded federal judicial power. Profiles of the 20 justices who served on the Taney Court place a special emphasis on those who made the most significant impact, including Taney, Joseph Story, Benjamin Curtis, and John A. Campbell.

Abstract:
This chapter offers a revisionist critique of the career of the Scotsman Charles Rogers (1825–1890) and his role in the foundation of the Royal Historical Society, which serves to highlight how British historical practice was both formed and undone at the confluence of national traditions: how a strong associational dynamic perpetuated discrete national historiographies and professional and patronage networks, and how commerce, as much as university patronage, informed the professionalization of the discipline. It considers how, in both English and Scottish contexts in the late Victorian period, academic history was more contingently constructed than is sometimes thought. More broadly, it points to the limitations of the ‘unionist nationalism’ paradigm in an English context.

Full text
Abstract:
This book explores the childhood reception of classical antiquity in Britain and the United States over a century-long period beginning in the mid-nineteenth century, with a focus on two genres of children’s literature– the myth collection and the historical novel—and on adults’ literary responses to their own childhood encounters with antiquity. The book recognizes the fundamental role in writing for children of adults’ ideas about what children want or need, but also attends to the ways in which child readers make such works their own. The authors first trace the tradition of myths retold as children’s stories (and as especially suited to children) from Nathaniel Hawthorne and Charles Kingsley to Roger Lancelyn Green and Ingri and Edgar Parin D’Aulaire, treating both writers and illustrators. They then turn to historical fiction, particularly to the roles of nationality and of gender in the construction of the ancient world for modern children. They conclude with an investigation of the connections between childhood and antiquity made by writers for adults, including James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Naomi Mitchison, and H.D., and with a reading of H.D.’s novella The Hedgehog as a text on the border between children’s and adult literature that thematizes both the child’s special relation to myth and the adult’s stake in children’s relationship to the classics. An epilogue offers a brief overview of recent trends, which reflect both growing uncertainty about the appeal of antiquity to modern children and an ongoing conviction that the classical past is of perennial interest.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses slavery in Illinois before and after emancipation. It begins with a brief history of slavery in Illinois, dating back to 1734 when the laws of Louis XIV were enacted, regulating the traffic in slaves in the province of Louisiana—which included Illinois. Slavery was legalized under English rule when General Gage took possession of the territory and allowed the French inhabitants the privilege of becoming English subjects. When George Rogers Clark came into the Northwest, the Virginia House of Burgesses charted the whole territory and enacted a law in October 1778, making it the county of Illinois. The chapter also looks at a man who played a major role in consolidating the opposition to slavery and to lead this opposition effectively: James Lemen. Finally, it considers the controversial Black Laws, or Black Codes, which treated the territory's Negroes and mulattoes as taxable property and were denied citizenship, and the battle between those who opposed and were in favor of making Illinois a slave state.
