Abstract:
In my essay I will discuss the role of the main character, Miss Emily, in the short story "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner. The short story was written in 1930 and takes place in the small town of Jefferson, in the south of the USA. Miss Emily is the only person remaining of the Grierson family, a family seen as mighty, as it used to be wealthy and had a prominent position in the town, and therefore she considers herself as finer than the other townspeople. As a result, she never marries and keeps to herself most of the time. The story stretches over most of Miss Emily‟s life and the narrator focuses on her. When she in the end dies, it is revealed that she had poisoned her lover and slept next to the dead body for forty years. In this essay I suggest that Miss Emily is imaged as a goddess and I will try to show evidence for that by pointing out religious references in the text as well as by discussing the important role of the narrator. I will argue that due to the Grierson family‟s history being of importance to the town, the prominence of Miss Emily‟s looks, and the way she acts imply that she is seen by the townspeople as a goddess. Moreover, Miss Emily‟s relationship with Homer Barron and the description of her house will be analyzed to strengthen the idea that Miss Emily could be linked to divinity. In my view, if Miss Emily is perceived as a goddess, she is bound to emerge as more than a mentally disturbed woman who killed her lover.

Abstract:
This paper reconsiders the trade effects of the euro, providing a decomposition into its effects on the extensive margin and intensive margin. Furthermore, it relates the more disaggregated estimates for 93 two-digit HS product groups to the elasticity of substitution, thereby testing a key hypothesis of recent trade theory. The estimates for the period 1996-2011 suggest a trade effect of the euro of some 28 percent, which has mainly materialized through the intensive margin. For several product groups, we find a negative net effect of the euro on the extensive margin, supporting anecdotal evidence that firms have consolidated their product varieties in response to the elimination of exchange rate variability. Finally, the disaggregated estimates are in line with recent trade theory, suggesting that a large elasticity of substitution dampens the effect of a trade cost reduction on the extensive margin and amplifies its effect on the intensive margin.

Atkinson, Daniel Edward. "The functional role of the trace amine 1 receptor in rode." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.594216.

Full text
Abstract:
The monoamines play important roles as neurotransmitters both centrally and peripherally, and are believed to play a key role in a number of pathological conditions such as Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, drug addiction, and mood disorders, which has driven many years of research, resulting in a relatively good understanding of the neurochemistry of this group of amines. [n contrast, relatively little is known about the role of a second class of endogenous amines, the 'trace amines, that share substantial overlap with the monoamines. For 30 years the trace amines, have also been thought to be associated with affective behaviour, paranoid chronic schizophrenia and depression. However, until the recent discovery of a novel family Gprotein- coupled receptors (GPCRs), with high affinity for the trace amines, research was restricted. One member of this family, trace amine 1 receptor (TA1) is functional in both rodents and man, and is expressed widely throughout the brain of the mouse, rat and human. The functional role of the TAl receptor in the mammalian brain was therefore the focus of the current project. In order to investigate the function of the TAl receptor, two specific TAl receptor agonists were used, kindly provided by Hoffman La Roche. As the TAl receptor has been implicated in the neuropathophysiology of several psychiatric disorders, such as ADHD and schizophrenia, which are characterised by substantial and debilitating deficits in cognitive performance, initial experiments aimed to assess for any effect of the TAl agonists on cognitive performance in laboratory rodents. In part, the association between the TAl receptor and mental disorders is based on evidence suggesting an interaction with monoamine neurotransmission. However, previously reported findings from in vitro studies do not support a mechanism of interaction comparable with results from in vivo studies. Therefore later experiments investigated the relationship between TAl and monoamine neurotransmission in vivo. Initial experiments focused on the interaction between TAl activation and behaviours induced by psychostimulants known to alter monoamine function, and subsequent investigation examined the possible mechanisms involved using in vivo microdialysis.

Abstract:
Epic films are integral to the experience and interpretation of history outside the limits of traditional research. In their capacity as one of the primary forms of historical adaptation for the public, they suggest new ways of understanding and representing the past. This thesis looks beyond questions of historical accuracy and political context to determine how the epic genre recreates historical worlds onscreen from a sensory perspective. It focuses on two key epics, Gladiator (2000) and The Robe (1953), and analyses them using phenomenological models which help to emphasize the importance of sensory experience in cinematic reconstructions of ancient history.

Sablayrolles, Robert. "Les cohortes de vigiles." Paris 4, 1987. http://www.theses.fr/1987PA040048.

Full text
Abstract:
Created by Augustus for fire prevention, the cohorts of vigils underwent a significant change during their four century-long life : a troop of freedmen of the familia publica type at the start, they progressively acquired a status similar to that of the urban forces and the traditional army. If, in effect, the vigils were used as soldiers as early as the first century, their legal situation evolved more slowly. That force nearing 3500 men under Augustus - was progressively increased, possibly under Domitian, and without any doubt under Septimius Severus. The recruitment, which was restricted to freedmen at the time of Augustus, extended to free men as early as the second century and even to some roman citizens. Chiefly of Italian origin in the second century, the recruits later came from more distant areas, particularly under Septimius Severus. It is possible that, under Gallienus, detachments of vigils have been incorporated in the mobil the number of soldiers was still reduced by Diocletian, and the cohorts were final- ly suppressed about 370 a. D. Of the original institution there only remained the prefect, who was by then under the authority of the urban prefect. The prosopographical study underlines the prefect's functions: in military matters, he was under the authority of no one except the emperor, and in judicial matters his power applied to numerous fields. Centurions, tribunes and sub-prefects followed the traditional careers. The soldier's ambitions were more modest : access to frumentum publicum after a three year service, guaranteed livelihood at Rome, possible promotion to the rank of principalis, and, at last, missio. To perform their main duty - fire prevention - , the vigils were organized as a patrolling force and, in the course of their night patrols, they were also able to perform police duties, at Rome and at ostia. So, they guarded Rome against a peril that was omnipresent in daily life and in the people's minds : the burning of the city

Full text
Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
The dissertation offers a critical analysis of the Epitome de Caesaribus, a fourth-century Latin series on the lives of the emperors from Augustus to Theodosius (c. AD 395), and consists of seven chapters defining the text, the genre, its sources, its religious milieu, and its political and social ideas. The political ideas in the Epitome were deeply marked by the influence of the ascetic ideal honouring moderation in drink, food, sleep, sex, and emotions such as anger. Within the fourth-century Roman Empire, the epitomator offers moderate pagan views which show interest about dreams, asceticism, and the providential nature of the divinity. The dissertation proposes to see the Epitome as a literary artefact which, through comparison with contemporary authors, allows one to extract from a bland text ideas found among fourth-century elites in the emperor Honorius' Italy (395-423).

Abstract:
The study comes from archaeologists' questions. How to conciliate the variety of funeral practices in excavations, and the vocabulary wich is in the texts homogeneous, ad this time when cremation was most widely practiced in the roman world. Setting dead int he middle of the research, the analysis in a first part, looks into terminology of the body and cares. The opposition between corpus and cadauer brings out the dead's integration or expulsion. That is specified by the principles of cares in relation with fire, earth, water and air; in practices there is a hierarchy according to the dead's recognition. The second part tries to define the majority uses of cremation by rogus and bustum. The third part shows to see structuring of space as decisive for choice of a ritual

This thesis studies different questions about water in the ancient roman world. The first part, Water and Geography, shows how the river's natural layout favoured, thanks to the fluvial shipping, the expansion of the cities built on their course and analyses the different cases in which the presence of water (rivers or springs) played a part in the creation of new cities. The second part exposes religion, gods of springs and fluvial shipping and the taboos in connection with water. The third part analyses the place that water holded in ancient medicine (hydrotherapy, balneotherapy and thermalism)

Abstract:
The first roman republic (509-218 B.C.) is not a specific regime but a historiographical elaboration beginning in the Second Century B.C. For the Romans themselves, the real operation of the institutions were lost for the first three centuries of the Republic. The history of this time was rather used to create or delete constitutionnal precedents in order to legalize (or not) some later behaviours. Events read by modern scholars are the product of historiographical stratums (from the Greek historians in the 3rd Century B.C. to the editors of the 19th and 20th centuries) and logics present in each stratum in order to elaborate a consistent story. The study includes a detailed analysis of these stratums and proposed a new method to analyze the first republic. This method is especially applied to the construction of dictatorship, typical magistrature of the Roman Republic

Abstract:
The contract of mandatum in Roman law, unlike its namesake in modern civil law legal systems, was not a contract of representation or agency. It was a contract of gratuitous performance of services for others. According to Corpus luris Civilis it was a contract which drew its origin from the duties of friendship. This paper examines certain rules of mandatum and compares them with a similar legal institution known as procuratio and concludes that friendship must indeed have been the origin of the contract. The paper then examines various aspects of friendship in Roman society, and concludes that social custom cannot have been the sole basis for the creation of the contract. The philosophical and ethical views of Cicero and Seneca are then considered. From the works of these two authors two lines of thought regarding friendship are deduced: friendships are to be entered into for their own sake, or friendships are to be entered into for the benefits that will ensue. The former is the 'noble' view of friendship, the latter the 'utilitarian'. The author concludes after a reexamination of the rules of mandatum that the 'noble' view provides a better answer to the question of why mandatum was created by the Roman jurists.
