Abstract:
Reduction of cholesterol ester (CE) from lipid burden lesion-associated macrophage foam cells has been shown to reduce plaque volumes. Hydrolysis of CE to free cholesterol (FC) in macrophages is an essential step for removal of CE from the macrophage and its transport to the liver by high density lipoprotein (HDL) for further metabolism. Since CE must again be hydrolyzed into FC in the liver catalyzing this hydrolysis, it becomes imperative to find the identity of these enzymes. In this study the role of key enzyme in catalyzing the hydrolysis of CE to FC, neutral cholesterol ester hydrolase (CEH) was evaluated. Further, ability of this CEH to hydrolyze CE delivered via scavenger receptor BI (SR-BI) or SR-BII was also monitored. CE hydrolysis and FC efflux were monitored from cells transfected with CEH expression vector. No significant difference was noted in either the intracellular CEH activity or FC efflux between cells transfected with an empty vector or a CEH expression vector. Further no difference was seen when experiments were repeated with cells stably transfected with SR-BI or SR-BII. Future experiments with more optimization of the cells system used will be required to reach any conclusions on the role of CEH in hydrolyzing HDL-CE delivered via SR-BI/BII.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between sex-role ideology and body image among women of various ages. Theorists have suggested that poor body image may be related to the experience of being female in contemporary society. This study attempted to objectively test this theory by determining whether or not feminist women, due to less restrictive notions of their rights and roles in contemporary society, might demonstratemore positive relationships with their bodies than women with more traditional attitudes.such a relationship (between feminist sex-role ideology and body esteem) would apply across age categories.Five hundred seventy-five female faculty, staff, retirees, and students completed a demographic profile, the Body Esteem Scale, and the Simplified Attitudes Toward Women Scale. Correlational analysis of data provided no support for the proposed hypotheses. Further study is recommended.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the advent of the Bem Sex Role Inventory (Bem, 1974) two models, the Androgyny and Masculinity model, have been advanced to explain the sex role literature. This study attempts to rectify several methodological issues by experimentally controlling for the effects of self-esteem and using a quartile-split procedure for sex role type assignment. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate interpersonal problem solving ability among sex role types and to compare the predictions of the Androgyny model and the Masculinity model. The results of both experiments implicate the crucial role of self-esteem in sex role research. Self-esteem, rather than sex role type, appears to be more predictive of adequate psychological adjustment.

Kakko, S. (Sakari). "Role of polymorphisms of the cholesteryl ester transfer protein gene in atherogenesis." Doctoral thesis, University of Oulu, 2000. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:951425578X.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) is a plasma protein that transfers cholesteryl esters and triglycerides between plasma lipoproteins. Humans with a genetic CETP deficiency have high plasma high density lipopoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels, whereas the CETP transgene lowers plasma HDL-C levels in mice. The role of CETP in the development of atherosclerosis is unclear due to the controversial results of many human and animal studies. The present research was designed to investigate the CETP gene as a candidate gene in the regulation of plasma HDL-C levels and the development of atherosclerosis in humans. The CETP gene was screened for mutations and polymorphisms associated with these traits in a well-characterized, homogenous population sample of 515 men and women and in a sample of 115 men with low HDL-C levels and coronary heart disease (CHD). Using polymerase chain reaction and single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis (PCR-SSCP), three polymorphic sites were found (A373P, I405V, R451Q) in the exons of the CETP gene, one in intron 9 and one in the 3'untranslated region of the CETP gene. In addition, the genotypes of a functional promoter polymorphism were determined. The V405 allele was associated with lower plasma CETP activity in the whole population sample, and the Q451 allele and the P373 allele were associated with higher plasma CETP activity in men, whereas the genotypes of the promoter polymorphism were not significantly associated with plasma CETP activity. The genotypes of the CETP gene explained about 20 % of the variation of plasma CETP activity in men. The CETP gene polymorphisms were found to be a minor regulator of plasma HDL-C levels, and these associations interacted with alcohol consumption, sex and triglyceride levels. The strongest association was detected between the promoter polymorphism and HDL-C levels in women. The variation at the CETP gene locus explained about 8 % of the variation in plasma HDL-C levels in women, but less than 1 % in men. CETP gene polymorphisms (A373P, I405V and R451Q) were associated with carotid intima-media thickness, explaining about 6 % of the variation in men and 4 % in women. However, none of the polymorphisms were associated significantly with the CHD risk. In conclusion, the CETP gene was found to be polymorphic and a minor regulator of plasma HDL-C levels and the development of atherosclerosis.

Abstract:
When self-esteem is dependent on competence individuals invest a great deal of effort in their accomplishments in order to validate themselves. The aim of the present thesis was to develop a theoretically sound and valid concept and measure of contingent self-esteem dependent on competence, and examine its vulnerable implications and role in burnout. In Study I a concept and measure of contingent self-esteem dependent on competence, termed competence-based self-esteem (CBSE), was developed. Confirmatory factor analyses showed its distinctiveness from other sources of self-esteem and revealed two dimensions comprising behaviors referring to: i) Self-esteem conditional upon competence and ii) Frustrated self-critical strivings. The new scale showed high reliability and gained both convergent and discriminative validity through different methods in different samples. Study II set out to experimentally test the vulnerable implications of CBSE in a performance situation. The results showed that high, as compared to low, scorers on the scale exhibited stronger physiological reactivity and momentary exertion coupled with frustrated mood. Study III focused on the role of self-esteem contingent on competence in the burnout process and its association with work- and private-life stressors over time in working women and men. The analyses showed that contingent self-esteem was a predictor of burnout. In addition, women scored higher on both contingent self-esteem and burnout and reported higher general life stress than did men, whereas men showed stronger associations between work stressors and burnout. The results of the three studies suggest that contingent self-esteem, where outcomes of one’s acts and performance serve to compensate an impoverished basic self-worth, facilitates the understanding of stress-related vulnerability and ill-health.

Full text
Abstract:
Current cognitive models of Bulimia Nervosa (BN) emphasize the importance of global negative self-evaluations in the development and maintenance of the disorder. However, there are inconsistencies in the research findings that have examined the relationship between levels of selfesteem and BN. Although investigations are being made into, and tools designed to measure implicit self-esteem, to date in the eating disorder literature self-esteem has only been measured using self-report questionnaires and thus may only allow access to explicit self-esteem. The literature review examines the relevance of self-esteem within cognitive behavioural theories of BN and reviews the literature that has attempted to investigate relationships between levels of self-esteem and BN. Research investigating implicit self-esteem is then reviewed and the value of extending this research into the area of eating disorders considered. The empirical research then primarily investigates whether there are differences in implicit biases of self between individuals with eating disorders compared to healthy controls, using the Implicit Associations Test (IAT: Greenwald, McGhee, & Schwartz, 1998; Greenwald & Farnham, 2000). Differences between the groups in explicit self-esteem are also investigated. The results show a significant difference between the groups on both the explicit and implicit measures of self-esteem, but show that individuals with eating disorders actually have higher levels of implicit self-esteem. The results are discussed in relation to other research that has found that a positive implicit self-esteem bias exists in clinical populations and that considers the discrepancies between implicit and explicit measures.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the present thesis is to investigate the correlates of self-esteem in pre-adolescence. In addition, the thesis aims to identify certain gender-specific factors which may differentiate girls and boys with respect to levels of self-esteem. The sample in this research derived from eight public elementary schools situated at an average socioeconomic level district of Athens. It comprises 147 6" grade pupils of both sexes and 103 mothers. Children were administered the relevant questionnaires during two regular work periods in the normal classroom. The mothers were contacted by telephone and those who agreed to participate completed relevant questionnaires at home. Among the factors which were examined were: the child's perceptions as regards beliefs of control and social support, the presence of stressful events in children's lives, behaviour problems in children at home and school, individual physical and social qualities of children, as assessed by the mother, and father's involvement with children's everyday activities. Further, the quality of family functioning as perceived by both the mother and child. Finally, sociodemographic variables referring to certain characteristics of the family, such as structure and socioeconomic status, and children's characteristics, such as weight height and physical health. Results indicate that externality of locus of control is the factor which correlates most strongly with self-esteem and this applies for both sexes. Lack of social support, mother's age and the child's satisfaction with family functioning are also influential. Weaker correlations were observed between a child's self-esteem and the child's perception of family cohesion, the distance between mother's ideal self and mother's image of the child, the mother's viewing the child as lacking effectiveness, the mother's perception of family adaptability and the average score of negative events in the child's life. Results from separate analyses among boys and girls are discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
Any type of bullying can become a traumatic event for a child, leading to lasting negative effects. Specifically, victimization may lead to numerous behavioral problems and lowered self-esteem. Also, the quality of attachment may have a predictive relationship with the victimization and the negative outcomes it may cause. Other research implied that a similar relationship may be found between retrospective bullying and humanity-esteem. Despite the collective research done on these variables, no study, until now, has looked at retrospective bullying, humanity-esteem, attachment, behavior problems, and self-esteem all together. This study not only looked at the relationships among these variables but also the role that humanity-esteem and attachment served between victimization, later behavior problems, and later self-esteem. One hundred thirty-six participants completed five questionnaires assessing experiences of retrospective bullying, humanity-esteem, current attachment relationships, behavior problems, and self-esteem. The results of this study indicated that participants who reported having been bullied previously also endorsed internalizing and externalizing problems as well as low self-esteem. Further, humanity-esteem and attachment both served as significant predictors of victimized individuals' behavioral problems and self-esteem. Such findings suggested that a higher view of humanity and secure attachment may serve as a protective factor against the negative outcomes that may be related to having been bullied. The importance of studying the relationships among these variables is discussed further.

Abstract:
Previous research has failed to identify a strong relationship between parental role involvement and self-esteem of parents despite theoretical and intuitive support for the prediction. An explanatory model of the interaction between role occupancy, psychological centrality of the role, and self-esteem among older parents was presented. Data from the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH) were used to test a path model examining the effects of the roles of parent, spouse, and worker, as well income, age, sex, and health on self-esteem. The data failed to support the model as presented. Role involvement did not affect self-esteem and psychological centrality had a direct effect instead of the proposed interactive effect. Health was the strongest predictor of self-esteem. In contrast to previous research, age negatively affected self-esteem in this sample.

Abstract:
From the discussion of a case of attempted infanticide, we tried to discuss some of the conditions for the construction of the maternal role. Among the possible ways to approach a case in research, we chose to build a case, favoring a look that starts from the clinic, in which we understand is the base of the psychoanalytic discovery in its vocation to provide feedback for theory. Three main aspects were privileged: a bodily experience, the place of the subject and the social bond. To this end, these aspects have been worked up: the historical background antecedent to what is meant by motherhood today, including psychoanalysis in its early stages, the different discourses on the body leading into the medical discourse as proposed by Clavreul, and issues of the social bond in the constitution of the maternal role, from the concept of narcissistic contract of Piera Aulagnier. Thus, one could point out how the maternal role is crossed by the deconstructive logic of the subjective of contemporaneity and at the same time reaffirming the listening to the subject as a condition for overcoming the impasses of the present

DePaul, Jillian. "School Belonging and Social Support: Identifying Moderators of the Relationship between Gender Typicality and Self-Esteem." Thesis, Boston College, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/703.

Abstract:

Gender is an undeniably significant element of human identity, contributing to multiple aspects of development. Previous research suggests that gender typicality, a sense that one is typical for one's own gender category, is associated with positive developmental outcomes among children while a sense of gender atypicality is generally associated with negative outcomes, including lowered self-esteem (Egan & Perry, 2001). This study further investigates the relationship between gender typicality and self-esteem from a developmental-contextual perspective by examining the relationship in the context of various developmental systems (e.g., school, peer group). Positive connections to developmental systems such as peers and school have been found to foster resilience by reinforcing strengths and buffering students from negative outcomes (Masten & Coatsworth, 1998). Therefore, it was hypothesized that classroom social support and school belonging would moderate the relationship between gender typicality and self-esteem by protecting gender atypical children from the negative cost of low self-esteem. Within the current sample, the relationship between gender typicality and self-esteem was more robust than in previous studies. While the moderating hypotheses were not confirmed, gender typicality was found to mediate the relationship between school belonging and self-esteem. The current findings underscore the vital role of gender and gender typicality in children's lives. Implications for prevention and intervention efforts in schools are discussed

Neubert, Jennifer M. "Investigating the role of self-esteem and social rank in subclinical paranoia." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2012. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/2615/.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a developing literature advocating a social rank approach to understanding psychotic experiences. A systematic review of the research in this area found suggestive evidence for associations between low social rank and important outcomes in psychosis including voice-distress, persecutory ideation and comorbid anxiety and depression. It has been difficult to separate out the effects of existing low rank from 'down-ranking' that may occur in response to experiences of psychosis and patienthood. Studying non-clinical groups is one way to minimise the impact of reactive changes of this kind. This study used a cross-sectional internet survey design to explore associations between self-esteem, social comparison and two dimensions of persecutory ideation (Persecution and Deservedness) in a large university sample (N = 534). Self-esteem and social comparison variables added significantly to the prediction of persecution and deservedness, after controlling for the effects of anxiety and depression. Negative selfesteem showed the strongest correlation with paranoia, and was also the strongest predictor in the regression models. Correlations between social comparison dimensions and paranoia were smaller in magnitude. In the multiple regression, Persecution was predicted by low social attractiveness and group fit, but high social rank. 'Poor me' and 'bad-me' paranoid groups were identified and compared. 'Bad-me' paranoia was associated with lower positive and higher negative self-esteem, lower social rank and lower social attractiveness. Persecutory ideation appears to be related to both low self-esteem and inferior social comparisons. The findings support the targeting of negative self-evaluations within interventions for psychosis.

All bona fide professions have affiliated professional organizations, ethical standards or a code of ethics, and an accrediting and sanctioning body that deals with preparation, credentialing, and licensure, and pride in one's profession (Gale & Austin, 2003; Remley & Herlihy, 2010). As school counseling continues to evolve, school counselors have struggled to define and maintain their role. This may be due, in part, to the social desirability an individual has to belong to dominant group in the school setting (Tajfel, 1986). School counselors may draw esteem from their professional membership. This concept, called collective self-esteem, denotes those aspects of identity that are related to membership in social groups and the respective value that one places on one's membership (Luhtanen & Crocker, 1992). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between collective self-esteem and professional identity. The findings of this study indicated that collective self-esteem was relatively stable and remained moderately high across several demographic variables related to professional identity. Collective self-esteem remained relatively consistent across level of practice, professional background, years of total experience and years of experience at the current school, and area of practice. Further, collective self-esteem remained moderately high for those who were affiliated with a counseling organization and those who were not. Results also suggested that collective self-esteem is constant regardless of variations in credentialing, chosen code of ethics, role definition (educator first or counselor first), and professional pride. Results indicated that collective self-esteem remained moderately high across several demographic areas and variables related to professional identity. Further, a significant positive correlation was found between pride in the profession and collective self-esteem was shown. Additionally, a small, significant negative correlation was garnered between those participants who viewed themselves as a counselor first and held an LPC or equivalent. Further, a significant relationship was found between those participants who defined their role as a counselor first and chose the NBCC Code of Ethics as their primary code of ethics and those participants who held the counselor first position and chose the ASCA Ethical Code as their primary code of ethics.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Risky sexual practices can lead to concerning public health issues, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancy. Coercive or deceptive behaviors by one’s partner to engage in risky practices may be one factor contributing to sexual risk. This study examined experiences of sexual risk coercion and deception, including partner sexual infidelity, coerced condom nonuse, and fear of negative partner reaction to condom request, as predictors of engagement in sexual risk behaviors, including condom use, safer sex communication, and lifetime number of sexual partners. Self-esteem was examined as a moderator. College students (N = 216) were recruited through the ETSU Sona System to complete self-report surveys via the REDCap survey platform. Using SPSS, linear regression analyses and PROCESS moderation analyses were performed. In analyses of covariance, gender, race/ethnicity, and sexual orientation made no significant contributions to the models. Partner sexual infidelity significantly predicted lifetime number of sexual partners (F(1, 210) = 11.042, p = .001, β = 3.088, SE = .929), R2 = .050. Self-esteem was found to be a significant moderator of this relationship (F(1, 197) = 8.759, p = .0035). Fear of negative partner reaction to condom request significantly predicted lifetime number of sexual partners (F(1, 213) = 4.930, p = .027, β = 2.609, SE = 1.175), R2 = .023. Future research should continue to examine the psychosocial determinants of sexual behaviors, as increased understanding will inform more effective sexual risk intervention to reduce HIV, other STIs, and unplanned pregnancy among college populations.

Abstract:
The aim of this literature review is to investigate which strategies teachers use to motivate pupils to communicate orally in English. The literature review also investigates how these teacher strategies affect pupils. The methodology used for this investigation is a systematic literature review. Various databases have been used when searching for literature. Scientific articles and theses have been searched for. They have also been read and analyzed before they have become a part of this review. The results indicate that some teachers feel insecure when speaking English. Therefore Swedish is spoken in many language classrooms. Teachers speaking in front of the class is the traditional way of teaching, and it does not seem to be a strategy who influences pupils positively. If teachers speak the target language among pupils they often get more motivated and focused pupils who feel comfortable speaking English. Young pupils are fast learners. By exposing them to the English language in early ages they receive great opportunities to learn a foreign language and strengthen their self-confidence. Drama, songs and rhymes are preferable strategies to use when teaching young learners. What position teachers decide to take in the classroom is also a significant element when teaching foreign languages.

Abstract:
This study considers the effectiveness and role of Nurture Groups in addressing children's and older students' self-esteem. It is suggested that self-esteem is nebulous in the field, calling for a re-conceptualisation. In light of existing models of self-esteem, the Nurture Group literature is systematically reviewed to ascertain Nurture Groups' effectiveness in promoting academic self-esteem specifically. Following the application of criteria, eleven quantitative, qualitative and mixed-method studies are analysed. Findings suggest that there is limited rigorous research and an emphasis on younger children. There is little evidence that Nurture Groups lead to increased academic competency and modest evidence of increased academic engagement. Children's reflection on learning cannot be gauged. It is argued that more varied, rigorous research is required and greater clarity needed among Nurture Group staff with regards to group goals and their role in bringing these about. In light of this, Nurture Group staff perspectives on the goals and practice within a Key Stage 3 Nurture Group are explored. Self- esteem is again examined and a multi-dimensional model of the development of self-esteem proposed. Nurture Group staff views are mapped onto this model. Findings highlight that staff view self-esteem as both inherent and as developing through experience, with an emphasis upon the latter. Findings suggest that staff predominantly view their role as impacting on students' self -appraisal, incorporating the specific areas of: personal behaviour management; inter-personal skills; and academic engagement. The study highlights that staff within this Nurture Group address self-esteem within these domains in several capacities, to differing extents. Suggested implications for staff are: the requirement to adhere to a rnulti-dirnenslonal model of self- esteem; the need to promote students' academic self-esteem in particular; as well as to work closely with students' social contexts. Findings have implications for training and practice and are therefore pertinent for pastoral managers and decision-makers.

Abstract:
There is a growing recognition among many who work with society's most disadvantaged cultural groups that cultural identity might be a primary issue related to their psychological adjustment. From his experience with Aboriginal peoples in Canada and inner city African American communities in the United States, Taylor (1997, 2002) theorizes that without a clear cultural identity, a person has no normative template with which to construct a clear personal identity, and by extension, to achieve positive self-esteem and well-being. The program of research I describe in the present thesis represents the first attempt to empirically investigate the extent to which the clarity of an individual's cultural identity is predictive of their experience of personal self-esteem and psychological well-being. In Manuscript 1, I present a series of studies that were conducted with undergraduate students, Anglophone Quebecers, Francophone Québécois, Chinese North Americans, and Aboriginal Canadians. In these five studies, the results demonstrate consistently positive associations among cultural identity clarity, personal identity clarity, and self-esteem and markers of subjective well-being. Beyond this, the results confirm that personal identity clarity mediates the relationship between cultural identity clarity and both self-esteem and well-being in all cultural groups. Having clear and confident beliefs about one's cultural group is associated with having clear and confident beliefs about one's personal self, which in turn predicts markers of psychological adjustment. In Manuscript 2, I explore the causal direction of the relationship between cultural identity clarity and self-esteem and well-being. A novel methodology involving computer-mediated communication is used to manipulate cultural identity clarity in a laboratory context. In two experiments, negotiating a computer-mediated social interaction with a clear cul

Abstract:
The!Wurpose of this study was to examine the effects of attributional style, mood, and self-esteem on the tendency to engage in bulimic behaviors. Specifically, it was proposed that individuals with a depressive attributional style (i.e. internal, stable, and global causes) would exhibit negative mood and low self-esteem, which would increase their tendency to engage in binging behaviors. Final data analyses were performed on 140 college females, exclusive of obese or anorexic restrictor females, enrolled in an introductory psychology course. Data consisted of self-report questionnaires which pertained to demographic characteristics, attributional style, positive and negative mood, self-esteem, and binging behaviors. The data were evaluated using path analytic techniques. Path coefficients were obtained via a series of multiple regression analyses. Although evidence did not fully support the proposed causal model, results did support the linear relationship between self-esteem and binging behaviors, andthe attributional dimension of globality with negative mood. Level of self-esteem appears to play an important role in relation to binge behaviors among the present nonclinical sample. Suggestions for future research and alternative models are proposed.

Full text
Abstract:
Research in the substance misuse field tends to focus on the causes of addiction and why people misuse drugs or alcohol. Often, research provides an understanding of substance abuse and its etiology through reference to the different models of addiction. Limited attention is given to the complex nature of developing substance abuse and the process of `addiction' and recovery and what these processes mean to individuals having lived through addiction and recovery. Existing qualitative research shows that identity change and changes in self-esteem are important constructs in the recovery from addiction (Etherington, 2006; Kellogg, 1993; Koski-Jannes, 2002; Larkin &Griffiths, 2002; McIntosh & McKeganey, 2001; McIntosh & McKeganey, 2000; Shinebourne & Smith, 2009; Vaughn & Long, 1999; Weegmann & Piwowoz-Hjort, 2009). This research explores the lived experiences of 8 participants who are recovering or have recovered from addiction to substances, focussing particularly on how changes in identity and self-esteem may facilitate recovery and contribute to its maintenance. The data were analysed using the IPA (Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis) approach. The interpretation of the data suggests that early experiences such as loss of relationships, conditions of worth and an unstable identity may play an important role in understanding vulnerability to developing substance misuse and that identity issues and self-esteem are key features in this understanding. Theories of identity development offer an understanding into the difficulties that individuals may face in constructing an integrated and healthy identity and what factors influence healthy identity development. Themes revealed during the data analysis suggest that the role of identity transformation is constructed through a meaning making process in which change becomes possible, thus facilitating the recovery process. Furthermore, a transition to a healthy identity increases self-esteem and facilitates the maintenance of recovery. This has implications for those involved in the treatment of addictions, for example, Counselling Psychologists. More effective treatment may involve an understanding of the importance of identity and self-esteem in recovery and the ways in which both therapist and client can co-construct the meanings that client's attach to their experiences of addiction and recovery.

Full text
Abstract:
The relationship between athletic participation, sex role orientation and self-esteem has received little attention from researchers and the relationship of these variables among females has not received as much attention as it has among males. It has been theorized that participation in sports, particularly team sports, may effect an increase in self-esteem due to increased positive body image and tend to “masculinize” women and/or attract females who possess or value more masculine traits and behaviors. To address these issues, a comparison of sex role orientation and level of self-esteem was made with female varsity athletes, recreational athletes and nonathletes at Western Kentucky University. The instruments utilized in the study were the Bem Sex Role Inventory, the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory, and an activity instrument on which the women indicated activities in which they had participated since and including the ninth grade. The activity instrument also asked for certain demographic information. The three groups of women were matched according to age, socioeconomic status and marital status. Significant differences were found between the three groups on sex role orientation. There was a much larger proportion of varsity athletes classified as androgynous when compared to the recreational athletes and nonathletes. In addition, a larger proportion of nonathletes was classified as feminine, and fewer were classified as masculine when compared to the varsity and recreational athletes. Indicated was a trend for an increasing number of females to be classified as androgynous and masculine as athletic participation increased. No significant differences were found between the groups with regard to level of self-esteem. Possible explanations for the finding are explored.

Abstract:
The development of online communication has changed the ways people communicate. Today’s generation of adolescents grew up with these technologies and are among the extensive users (Shapiro & Margolin, 2014). Although justifications have been laid on adolescents’ regular use, there is minimum understanding towards the values and capabilities of online communication to this age group (Poole & Peyton, 2013). This study examined the possible positive outcome of online communication towards adolescents’ friendship quality. A self-report questionnaire which is a combination of three existing measures was used to examine the ways participants use online communication. The Network of Relationship Inventory (NRI) by Furman & Buhrmester (1985) was used to measure online communication and friendship quality. Supporting Questions were asked to help understand the relationship. The self- Disclosure Index developed by Miller, Berg & Archer (1983) was used to measure the extent of disclosure. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale was used to evaluate individual self-esteem. The result showed a significant relationship between the frequency of use of online communication and friendship quality subscales support and satisfaction. However, an insignificant result was shown in subscale conflict. A significant result was shown on disclosure and friendship quality and weak significance on disclosure and self-esteem. The relationship between online communication and self-esteem showed an insignificant result. The findings that online communication positively impacts support and satisfaction is a good start for understanding the adolescents’ consistent use of online communication. Limitations of the study and future directions are discussed.

The purpose with the study was to investigate some of the factors thatmight contribute to the development of exercise dependence. This byinvestigating if self-esteem works as a mediator in the relationshipbetween perfectionism and exercise dependence. We conducted anonline survey among regular exercisers in Sweden (N = 177). Themediating analysis showed that self-esteem partially explained theassociation between perfectionism and exercise dependence. That is,self-esteem can help clarify the nature of the relationship. In conclusion, this study reveals that it is important to further investigate theunderlying psychological mechanisms to why some people are exercise dependent.

Abstract:
The role of self-conscious emotions of shame and guilt on depression is ambiguous, while studies simultaneously investigating shame and guilt suggest that both emotions have strong unique effects on depression, it is however not yet clear which psychological processes cause shame and / or guilt to be related to depression. This study tested the hypothesis that shame but not guilt will be associated with depression, and that this relationship will be fully mediated by self-esteem and rumination. A sample of 246 university students (mean age = 20.39 years; SD = 1.89), completed a survey questionnaire with measures of shame, guilt, self-esteem, rumination and depression. Path analysis was used to analyse the data. The results indicated that shame but not guilt had a strong unique effect on depression, and that self-esteem and rumination fully mediated this relationship. However, guilt had a significant but weaker relationship with depression, and self-esteem and rumination did not mediate the relationship. Recommendations for future research and limitations of this study are also presented.

This thesis aimed at revealing the mediator role of self esteem between body satisfaction and depression symptoms relationship in a Turkish University sample. The participants were 232 young adults from differents departments of Middle East Technical University. Hierarchical Regression Analyses were conducted to examine the mediator role of self esteem between body satisfaction and depression symptoms relationship. During these analyses gender, age, height, weight of the subjects and education level of the subjects&rsquo
parents were entered in the first step via stepwise method, and in the second step social support and attachment styles were entered by using stepwise method, in order to control for the potential variance accounted for by these variables. Results of the regression analyses revealed that after controlling for the above mentioned variables, body satisfaction and self esteem were significantly associated with depression symptoms, however after controlling for the effect of self esteem, body satisfaction and depression symptoms relationship disappeared. Moreover, body satisfaction was found to be significantly associated with self esteem, which further supported the mediation hypothesis. Hence, self esteem was found to mediate the body satisfaction and depression symptoms relationship. Results were discussed by referring to the relevant literature.
