Abstract:
A 2-year study of Bat and Robertson caves in south-eastern South Australia provided information on the microclimatic conditions in a maternity cave of the bat Miniopterus schreibersii. The study also monitored changes in the temperature and humidity conditions in what is believed to be a former maternity site, Robertson Cave, following restoration of the damaged dome. The maternity cave, Bat Cave, was characterised by mild hypoxic and hypercapnic conditions, high relative humidity, and temperatures in the roosting area of around 30°C. Accumulated guano deposits had some areas of heat generation, but the bats themselves appeared to be the primary modifiers of their own microenvironment. To support this finding, the recapping of Robertson Cave resulted in high humidities and a narrow range of temperature fluctuations; however, the temperature never reached the levels seen in Bat Cave. Our conclusion that the heat production of the bats themselves is the prime factor affecting microclimatic conditions necessary for breeding may relate to the observation that few maternity sites serve large and widespread populations of this species.

Abstract:
James Robertson’s early films of hospitalized children, particularly A Two Year Old Goes to Hospital (1952), are frequently cited in histories of child psychoanalysis and child psychiatry. Much less is known about the later phase of the research he undertook with his wife, Joyce Robertson, into substitute mothering and the nursery setting. This project was documented in the film series Young Children in Brief Separation ( YCBS) (1967), in which the Robertsons acted as foster parents to four children temporarily separated from their mothers. They made a contrasting film, John, about a young boy’s nine-day stay in a residential nursery, where the effects of discontinuous care on the child’s mind are starkly revealed. Drawing on the concept of the narrative self, this article examines the YCBS series for the first time in the historical literature, exploring the films’ clinical and socio-political meanings. In this new account of the Robertson films, cinematic storytelling becomes a means of exposing, and militating against, psychological fragmentation in the mind of the child, carer and film-viewer.

AbstractFollowing his return from participating in Benjamin Leigh Smith's expedition that wintered at Cape Flora, Northbrook Island, Franz Josef Land, in 1881–82, William Robertson, the chief engineer on the barque Eira, wrote a brief account of the expedition. Robertson's manuscript emphasises the hunting of walrus prior to reaching Franz Josef Land, the sinking of the ship, the enforced wintering, and the successful retreat of the party by open boat to Novaya Zemlya. The original of the manuscript reproduced here, which is one of only a few first-person accounts known to exist, is held by Robertson's descendants. It has not previously been published.

Reading Billy-Ray Belcourt’s A History of My Brief Body and Lisa Robertson’s The Baudelaire Fractal against the backdrop of the COVID-19 crisis, I suggest that a feminist ethic of care emerges from the authors writing of queer performativity. Against a neo-liberal model of care that individuates and isolates, Belcourt and Robertson offer theories of the self as historical and multiple. Following a brief close reading of their work, I argue that the overlapping crises of the present require a politics of decision. Precisely because caring for oneself as a protective gesture against social contagion does not scale up in the ways that the uneven distribution of life chances bears down on subjugated communities, Belcourt and Robertson suggest we must decide when to abandon the narrative enclosures of the self-as-isolation and embrace the radical exposures of collectivity.

Abstract:
In the 1930s the mathematical physicist Howard P. Robertson was the main referee of the journal Physical Review for papers concerning general relativity and related subjects. The rich correspondence between Robertson and the editors of the journal enables a historical investigation of the refereeing process of Physical Review at the time that it was becoming one of the most influential physics periodicals in the world. By focusing on this case study, the paper investigates two complementary aspects of the evolution of the refereeing process: first, the historical evolution of the refereeing practices in connection with broader contextual changes, and second, the attempts to define the activity of the referee, including the epistemic virtues required and the journal's functions according to the participants' categories. By exploring the tension between Robertson's idealized picture about how the referee should behave and the desire to promote his intellectual agenda, I show that the evaluation criteria that Robertson employed were contextually dependent and I argue that, in the 1930s, through his reports the referee had an enormous power in defining what direction future research should take.

To the Editor.— There have been several attempts to define the person-power needs for neonatologists in the United States.1-3 The reports by Merenstein et al2 and the AAP Committee on Fetus and Newborn1 maintain that there is presently an adequate number of neonatologists, whereas in a 1981 editorial, Robertson3 predicted increasing shortages of neonatologists. Why the difference between the conclusions? My answer to this question is that the reports by Merenstein et al and the AAP used calculated ratios of neonatologists to live births or lengths of stay, whereas the Robertson editorial expressed concern about the critical care needs of the physiologically unstable neonate.

Geoffrey Robertson (3rd ed, Penguin Books, London 2006) Paperback, pp 627, ISBN 10: 0 141 02463 1, £14.99Crimes Against Humanity: The Struggle for Global Justice (“CAH”) is a political, moral, legal and polemical work: as such, it is a comprehensive attempt to address the evils that, in the broadest sense of the concept, constitute crimes against humanity. The book is wide ranging, illuminating and entertaining. It is written in a lively and accessible style. Robertson is not afraid to make his position clear, often with a hard-hitting adjective or caustic aside, which gives the work a refreshing honesty that a more measured or academic approach might avoid. The moral, though not economic or pragmatic, case Robertson makes for the universal, coherent, consistent and systematic protection of human rights across the globe is compelling, and the broad-brush strokes of his argument, and much of its detail, is hard to disagree with. Generally speaking, I am therefore in agreement with Robertson’s objectives as set out in CAH, and the methodology he wishes to see used in order to achieve those objectives. There is much to praise in CAH, and it is a valuable contribution to the global promotion and protection of human rights and humanitarian values.

Abstract:
At the beginning of his first term as Chief Justice, John Roberts pledged to try to persuade his colleagues to consider the bipartisan legitimacy of the Court rather than their own ideological agendas. Roberts had mixed success during his first years on the bench, as the Court handed down a series of highprofile decisions by polarized, 5–4 votes. In the health care decision, however, Roberts did precisely what he said he would do, casting a tie-breaking vote to uphold the Affordable Care Act because he thought the bipartisan legitimacy of the Court required it. But the reaction to the health care decision – which Democrats approved and Republicans did not – suggests that Roberts's task of preserving the Court's bipartisan legitimacy is more complicated than he may have imagined, and that his success in the future will depend on the willingness of his colleagues to embrace his vision. Given the Court's declining approval ratings, an increase in partisan attacks on the Court, and a growing perception that the Court decides cases based on politics rather than law, the Chief Justice's vision of the Court as a bipartisan steward is more difficult – and also more urgently needed – than ever.

Land treatment is the predominant disposal method of effluents generated by distilling, wine making and grape juice production in the Western Cape. Primary settling and treatment in aerobic and anaerobic lagoons typically precede disposal to land. Land treatment can effectively remove COD and also benefit the soil by increasing organic matter, cation exchange capacity and moisture retention capacity. Adverse effects can include salinisation of soils and groundwater, soil structural degradation and odours generated by anaerobic conditions.

Abstract:
Assessing the impact of climate variability on water resources is one of the difficult tasks in planning the future growth of North-Central Texas. This study defined twelve extreme climate scenarios. Data from each scenario was input to a hydrological model (HEC-HMS) to calculate watershed runoff to Lake Ray Roberts. Model parameters are determined using Geographic Information System (GIS). The water balance was calculated for current and future water demand and resulting change in the volume and level of this reservoir. The results indicate certain climate scenarios decrease in volume. Thus, local governments should plan alternative water management strategies during droughts.

Abstract:
Thesis (MScAgric (Soil Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011.
Includes bibliography.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The topic of landscape heterogeneity has captured the imagination of ecologists and agriculturists alike and has been extensively investigated in this dissertation. Heuweltjies are landscape features putatively created by the termite Microhodotermes viator through their burrowing and nest-building activities. They have been closely examined in the natural veld of the Western Cape in the recent past and are the focus of many ecological studies. However, the effect of heuweltjies in cultivated landscapes (e.g. vineyards, orchards and wheat lands) remains unexplored. This study contributes significantly to our understanding of soil modifications associated with heuweltjies, as well as the physiology of vines growing on and off heuweltjies and wine made from these vines. It was hypothesized that heuweltjies occurring in cultivated areas can significantly affect crop yield and quality, thereby establishing itself as a potentially important role player in the agricultural economy of the Western Cape. This study was conducted in two climatic regions of the Western Cape, Stellenbosch (Mediterranean climate, Cabernet Sauvignon) and Robertson (semi-arid climate, Shiraz) to better understand how differences in heuweltjie characteristics correspond to differences in rainfall and temperature. In both study areas, heuweltjie soils were compared to non-heuweltjie soils with respect to physical and chemical. Grapevines associated with these heuweltjies were also compared to those growing on the adjacent, non-heuweltjie soils to determine any variation in vine vigour, physiology, phenology, berry characteristics and wine quality. Through the use of ANOVA's and Fisher's LSD posthoc tests to indicate statistical significance in soil and grapevine characteristics, it was apparent that heuweltjies induce substantial changes in soil and vine properties. Significant differences in the water content exist between the soils of the heuweltjies and non-heuweltjie areas. Heuweltjie soils exhibited higher values in comparison to the non-heuweltjie soils in the Stellenbosch study area, with opposite results in Robertson. Heuweltjie soils also displayed higher exchangeable calcium and magnesium and higher total carbon and total nitrogen values than non-heuweltjie soils in both study areas. Differences in physiology were more subtle, but vine vigour was severely altered on the heuweltjie-associated vines, exhibiting excessive vegetative growth in Stellenbosch, leading to variations in berry characteristics on and off the heuweltjies. Again, the opposite was observed for Robertson. Lower sugar and alcohol percentages and higher titratable as well as malic acid concentrations were observed in the wines emanating from the heuweltjies in Stellenbosch. Sensory analyses proved significant, as lower astringency and alcohol burn were detected in the Cabernet Sauvignon heuweltjie wines than the non-heuweltjie wines in the Stellenbosch study area. Chemical differences in the wines from the Robertson study are were insignificant. However, a significantly lower fruitiness was observed in the Shiraz heuweltjie-wines when compared to the non-heuweltjie wines. Differences in soil water content between heuweltjies and its adjacent soils was the most influential factor in this study, and affected all of the soil-grapevine interactions to a large extent. Further research need to be conducted to better understand and clarify the reasons behind these variations, as well as possible effects of global warming on heuweltjie functioning in different climatic regions of the Western Cape.

Abstract:
The purpose of the research was to explore the experiences of educators regarding the training for the implementation of inclusive education in a Full Service school. A qualitative research design was chosen, using a case study. Three methods of gathering data were used, namely individual interviews, focus group interviews and observations. The study was conducted in a primary schools in the North West province that was converted into a fullservice school in 2008. The findings indicated that educators demonstrated misunderstanding of the Screening, Identification, Assessment and Support strategy. The misunderstanding can be ascribed to the kind of training educators received. The training lacked in–depth content and practical demonstration. Recommendations on the content and the dynamics of the training process are made. The overarching recommendation on the dynamics of the training indicated that the training should be revisited for improved methods of training.

Abstract:
In June 2012, the Supreme Court of the United States decided the fate of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in a case called National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius. While initially the decision seemed favorable to supporters of the bill, Chief Justice Roberts’ majority opinion could likely render the bill ineffective in implementation and it creates more Constitutionally confusing precedent than it resolves. Among the questions that now rise to the surface are: will Congress be able to raise the tax to a level where it will become effective? What is now mandatory for states to adopt into their Medicaid programs? Where is the line for the federal government with regards to coercion? What are the definitions of direct and indirect taxes? And, how binding is the Origination Clause of the Constitution?

Tavasci, P. R. "Palaeoecology and preliminary taphonomy of the Robertson Cave entrance chamber fauna, Naracoorte." Thesis, 2018. https://hdl.handle.net/2440/133688.

Full text
Abstract:
This item is only available electronically.
The entrance chamber of Robertson Cave contains the most complete Holocene vertebrate deposit yet found at Naracoorte Caves, South Australia. The deposit dates from ~946 to 24090 Cal yr BP, spanning the ‘youngest’ part of the ~500,000 year Naracoorte fossil record. This study examined previously unstudied entrance chamber material, focussing primarily on the mammal fauna. Fossils were first sorted for diagnostic specimens and then identified to taxon. Taphonomic analysis of bone breakages, corrosion, manganese staining and hairline fracturing were completed. Statistical significance of faunal community composition across 12 excavation layers was analysed using chi-squared tests, along with comparisons between a similar, contemporaneous site, Wet Cave, and the modern mammal faunas for the region. Rarefaction was undertaken to ensure that the sample size from the deposit was sufficient to assess community structure. Palaeoecological analysis revealed the mammal fauna was composed largely of small herbivores and insectivores, with larger herbivores and only two larger carnivores. Assessment of the abundance of Anura in comparison with the mammalian fauna showed that in excavation layers 3 and 4, there was a much higher ratio of mammals; particularly Muridae, to Anura, which correlates to ~3819 to 10224 years ago. Taphonomic analysis of corrosion and breakages suggest the faunal assemblage was accumulated primarily as an owl deposit, aligning with prior work. The owl species was likely Tyto novaehollandiae, as indicated by the prey size range. Limited manganese staining and hairline fracturing of the bones suggest the cave environment remained relatively dry over time and has not experienced frequent significant wetting and drying. The inferred vegetation for the area immediately around the cave entrance was open, dry sclerophyll forest. Additionally, open mallee heathland was likely present in the region. Overall, Robertson Cave has a well-preserved diverse fossil assemblage that warrants further research.

Robertson, Benjamin Ian Roderick. "What happens next? Imaginative presence in Gary Peacock and Lee Konitz: Divergent fields, audiation, and the unexpected." Master's thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/117208.

Full text
Abstract:
Bassist Gary Peacock champions an intuitive aesthetic, whether improvising over standard or free jazz forms. Saxophonist Lee Konitz utilises a similarly fearless approach, improvising melodic ideas that are conceived in the moment. This can be an elusive goal for improvisers, and so this research compares the approaches of these two improvisers via transcription and analysis, and the employment of their methods in my own creative practice. In synthesising the key ideas of the two case studies, the research then presents a theory of improvising possibility, called the divergent field. This identifies a type of indeterminacy that can be used as the engine for change in the process of improvising. The divergent field describes musically ambiguous states that leave ‘what happens next’ as being up to the improviser. This aspect is examined in a creative component, Unanchored Music, An Improvising Journal 2013-16, a CD which accompanies the written exegesis and is a record of my own improvising as double bassist with several ensembles, exploring my own creative practice resulting from the writing. My improvising is informed by the jazz tradition in a creative method that involves daily practice, aural training and the study of ideas that populate my musical imagination. This has allowed me to absorb and apply aspects of this research into my own improvising, as it is motivated by a desire to discover the process that Konitz and Peacock are using while improvising, rather than imitate the final products they create. It is hoped that by focusing on this less explored aspect of the field, this thesis will contribute to improving the ongoing dialogue between player and researcher.

Abstract:
Abstract In this first-person recollection, Roberts describes in frank detail an expert witness in a civil rights case on behalf of former inmates subjected to a strip and body cavity search in a women's jail. As Roberts relates, the procedure was monitored by female deputies and conducted en masse, and those who were menstruating had to remove their soiled tampons or pads in front of the group and, in some cases, bleed down their legs and onto the floor. Deputies are alleged to have verbally abused the inmates during the procedure. This case, Roberts says, has opened her eyes to the ways the shame and disgust that menstruation engenders gets deployed to debase disenfranchised women. Roberts asserts that this is a uniquely misogynist form of punishment, meted out by and against bodies and minds that have been colonized by objectification and self-objectification, becoming a grotesque platform to dehumanize women who land on the wrong side of the law and who live in bodies that menstruate.

Abstract:
The freeborn son of an enslaved father and a free mother, Cuff Roberts’s life would be changed forever by the Revolutionary War. He served a five-year tour as part of the Continental Army, including at the Battle of Yorktown. As a veteran returning to Rhode Island, however, Roberts was not free to move around the country he helped make free. American poor laws, dating back to the seventeenth century, empowered Overseer of the Poor William Larned to repeatedly banish Roberts back to the town of Roberts’s birth. Roberts’s life would be shaped in powerful ways by American poor laws. Roberts helped local overseers by housing a needy neighbor, but came into conflict with other overseers over where he could live. After qualifying for a veterans’ pension, Roberts tried to make the life he wanted for his family in spite of the poor laws.

Abstract:
We study the classic cake cutting problem from a mechanism design perspective, in particular focusing on deterministic mechanisms that are strategyproof and fair. We begin by looking at mechanisms that are non-wasteful and primarily show that for even the restricted class of piecewise constant valuations there exists no direct-revelation mechanism that is strategyproof and even approximately proportional. Subsequently, we remove the non-wasteful constraint and show another impossibility result stating that there is no strategyproof and approximately proportional direct-revelation mechanism that outputs contiguous allocations, again, for even the restricted class of piecewise constant valuations. In addition to the above results, we also present some negative results when considering an approximate notion of strategyproofness, show a connection between direct-revelation mechanisms and mechanisms in the Robertson-Webb model when agents have piecewise constant valuations, and finally also present a (minor) modification to the well-known Even-Paz algorithm that has better incentive-compatible properties for the cases when there are two or three agents.

Abstract:
Abstract It is nowadays well accepted that the steady state rheological behavior of drilling fluids must be modelled by at least three parameters. One of the most often used models is the yield power law, also referred as the Herschel-Bulkley model. Other models have been proposed like the one from Robertson-Stiff, while other industries have used other three-parameter models such as the one from Heinz-Casson. Some studies have been made to compare the degree of agreement between different rheological models and rheometer measurements but in most cases, already published works have only used mechanical rheometers that have a limited number of speeds and precision. For this paper, we have taken measurements with a scientific rheometer in well-controlled conditions of temperature and evaporation, and for relevant shear rates that are representative to normally encountered drilling operation conditions. Care has been made to minimize the effect of thixotropy on measurements, as the shear stress response of drilling fluids depends on its shear history. Measurements have been made at different temperatures, for various drilling fluid systems (both water and oil-based), and with variable levels of solid contents. Also, the shear rate reported by the rheometer itself, is corrected to account for the fact that the rheometer estimates the wall shear rate on the assumption that the tested fluid is Newtonian. A measure of proximity between the measurements and a rheological model is defined, thereby allowing the ranking of different rheological behavior model candidates. Based on the 469 rheograms of various drilling fluids that have been analyzed, it appears that the Heinz-Casson model describes most accurately the rheological behavior of the fluid samples, followed by the model of Carreau, Herschel-Bulkley and Robertson-Stiff, in decreasing order of fidelity.

Abstract:
The following article belongs to a PhD project whose main subject is "The urban vitality of neighborhoods of the fbeltway of the city of Córdoba: The case of the neighborhoods of the southwest area". We will try to make an approach to the concept of deteriorating urban environment on the basis of the book The Green City (La Ciudad verde, 2000) by the architect Roberto Fernández. From this text we will resort to the author's approach on the urban problematic, which may cause urban decay. We will apply this concepts to the case of study, giving shape to a first diagnosis of the neighborhood's situation.

Abstract:
Motion control accuracy of robotic manipulators affects the overall robotic system performance. When the end-effector grasps different payloads, the joint motion of robotic manipulators will vary depending on the different payload masses. Traditional controllers have the problem of not being able to compensate the payload variation effect. Model reference adaptive control has been proposed to address the above problem. This paper discusses the model reference adaptive control of robotic manipulators initially raised by Roberto Horowitz and its associated development by other authors. A case study for a hybrid controller, which is derived from the model reference adaptive control system, is presented. Very few recent papers can be found in the area of model reference adaptive control of robotic manipulators, and this study can provide a guideline for future research in the direction of model reference adaptive control for robotic arms.

Abstract:
Abstract The need to avoid environmental degradation caused by toxic chemicals during drilling fluid operations is one of the objectives of the oil and gas industry. In this work, a non-edible plant of Thevetia Peruviana oil was used as potential base oil for formulation of drilling mud because of its non-toxic and environmental friendly nature of the plant. Oil extraction from the Thevetia Peruviana seeds was done using soxhlet method of extraction with n-hexane as the solvent. The formulated oil-based mud was compared with the API standard based on the mud density, filter cake thickness, gel strength and filtration loss. Four rheological models were considered, namely: Bingham plastic model, Power law model, Herschel-Bulkley model and Robertson-Stiff model. The optimization process was performed with MATLAB program in order to select the rheological model that best describe the behavior of the mud. The results of this study show that the formulated oil-based mud exhibited a non-Newtonian fluid rheological behavior. The rheology test result showed that the gel strength (10 min.) had 9.5 (Ib/100ft2), filter loss had 4.3 (mil) in term of filter volume. The mud density had 7.34 (Ib/gal), electrical stability of 528.0 (150°F and filter cake thickness of 1mm. Optimization of the Thevetia Peruviana oil based mud showed that Herschel-Bulkley model has the best performance indicators with good R2 (0.994) and standard error (2.16).

Abstract:
The present study investigates an intensive comparison of flow regime maps for the verification of annular condensation flow of R134a checked by sight glasses at the inlet and outlet sections of a vertical smooth copper tube having inner diameter of 8.1 mm and a length of 500 mm. R134a and water are used as working fluids in the tube side and annular side of a double tube heat exchanger, respectively. The experimental apparatus are designed to capable of changing the different operating parameters such as mass flow rate, condensation temperature of refrigerant, cooling water temperature and mass flow rate of cooling water etc. and investigate their effect on heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops. Condensation experiments are performed at the mass flux of 456 kg m−2s−1, the saturation temperature is around 40°C, heat fluxes and average qualities are between 16.16–50.89 kW m−2 and 0.81–0.93 respectively. Considering Chen et al.’s annular flow theory on the heat transfer coefficients that are independent from tube orientation as long as annular flow exists along the tube length, experimental data belong to annular flow inside the test tube are plotted on the various flow regime maps and used in the flow regime identification correlations proposed for two-phase flow in horizontal and vertical tubes separately. In spite of their different operating conditions, Barnea et al., Hewitt and Robertson, Baker, Thome, Kattan et al., Chen et al.’s flow regime maps and Taitel and Dukler’s, Dobson’s, Akbar et al.’s, Breber et al.’s, Cavallini et al.’s, Soliman’s flow pattern correlations from literature are found to be predictive for the annular flow conditions in the test tube.

Full text
Abstract:
The so-called JKR theory of adhesion between elastic spheres in contact (Johnson, Kendall & Roberts 1971, Sperling 1964) has been widely used in micro-tribology. In this paper the theory is extended to solids of general shape and curvature. It is assumed that the area of contact is elliptical which turns out to be approximately true, though the eccentricity is different from that for non-adhesive contact. Closed form expressions are found for the variation with load of contact radius and displacement, as a function of the ratio of principal relative curvatures of the two bodies in contact. The pull-off force is found to decrease with increasing eccentricity from its value of 3πΔγR/2 in the case of contact of spheres of radius R.
