Abstract:

O estudo de caso tem sido um terreno contestado na investigação em ciências sociais porque utiliza abordagens diferentes, às vezes opostas. É uma das mais utilizadas metodologias de investigação qualitativa em pesquisa educacional. Contudo, os metodólogos não fazem consenso sobre a concepção e a realização desse método, dificultando a sua plena evolução. Este autor concentra sua atenção nas obras de três deles, Robert Yin, Sharan Merriam e Robert Stake, buscando captar perspectivas divergentes, convergentes e complementares. Abstract:

The name of Robert Estienne (1501–59), the great French humanist, printer and editor, as well as leading scholar in Latin and Greek studies, is associated with his exile from Catholic France to Calvinist Geneva around 1547. Ever since his departure, the question has been raised whether it was legitimate for the Royal Printer to leave Paris. Beyond the case of Estienne himself, who has come to be viewed as a symbol of religious persecution and a precursor of modern democracy, what is at stake is the complex relation of an intellectual to his society and his country, the writing of a national history filled with great and illustrious men, and the difficult duty of individual conscience.

Abstract:

Questions of life and death are primarily philosophical questions, as philosopher Robert Spaemann argues. Spaemann argues that “brain death” is philosophically unsatisfactory as a definition of death, and as the exclusive criterion for determining death, for two main reasons: first, because it attempts to annul the basic perceptions of the ordinary person in regard to death. Second, because the cause of life and unity in a living being cannot be reduced to the brain. This essay is an explication of Spaemann’s contribution to the “brain death” question, which consists in illuminating the philosophical issues at stake. Summary: This article presents Robert Spaemann’s philosophical case that “brain death” suffices neither as a definition of death nor as the sole criterion of death.

Abstract:

In French, the term reprise (revival) is polysemous to a high degree. Starting with a short redefinition of the term, our present concern is to make clear its historical evolution and to analyse the contexts in which theatre directors are using it today. Whether the motives for a revival be economic, emotional or aesthetical, the phenomenon becomes more and more important in the perspective of a globalization of the major theatrical productions. From Giorgio Strehler's seven revivals of Goldoni's Servant of Two Masters to the several versions in different languages of one performance by Robert Wilson or Robert Lepage, what is at stake in a revival has changed considerably: this is what this article will attempt to clarify.

Abstract:

The seminal study of race and Brazilian cinema is Robert Stam’s “Tropical Multiculturalism”. Since the publication of this groundbreaking book in 1997, there has been remarkably little effort by Brazilian film scholars or critics to deepen and build upon Stam’s central claims or extend his analysis to the 21st century. In this article I hope to reverse this trend and invigorate more discussion and study of racial politics and Brazilian film. To this end, I detail the ways that Brazilian cinema continues to be complicit with white supremacy, highlight and analyze some of the most notable antiracist Brazilian films that have been produced in recent years, and underscore what is at stake for Brazilian society if cultural workers, such as filmmakers, do not reverse course and begin taking on racism in a much more intentional and sustained way.Keywords: Robert Stam. Abstract:

As a research method, case studies are often used in qualitative research, but there is no agreement on research procedures. Case studies have been widely used in psychology, which is not only used in the context of research but it has different meanings. The purpose of this article is to provide a description of the case study as a research method, by providing an overview of the procedures for conducting research which includes when case studies can be used, research design, data collection, data validity, and data analysis. This article seeks to help emerging researchers in the field of psychology with several views from Robert Yin and Robert Stake. This article helps researchers to familiarize themselves with the procedures of qualitative research using case studies. A case study approach that is applied correctly can be a valuable method for conducting research, especially in the field of psychology as a means of developing theory, evaluating programs, developing interventions.

O artigo questiona duas tendências das pesquisas qualitativas rotuladas de "estudos de caso" no campo da educação: a primeira, considera qualquer investigação que focalize uma unidade um estudo de caso; a segunda supõe que, se o interesse pelo "caso" for devido à sua singularidade, não há como ou por que vinculá-lo à discussão corrente na área. Com o objetivo de contribuir para o enfrentamento desses problemas, o artigo busca examinar, na literatura sobre o tema, dois aspectos fundamentais para a discussão: a natureza dos estudos de caso e a questão da generalização ou da aplicabilidade do conhecimento, gerado por esse tipo de pesquisa, a outros contextos. Com base nas posições de dois dos mais reconhecidos especialistas em estudos de caso - Robert Yin e Robert Stake - são discutidos os critérios para avaliar se determinada pesquisa pode ou não ser classificada como um estudo de caso, bem como as alternativas à generalização de tipo estatístico oferecidas por aqueles autores.

O Estudo de Caso (EC) envolve um cenário conceitual divergente podendo ser utilizado em formas de pesquisa diversificadas no campo dos estudos organizacionais com respeito ao valor e à plausibilidade da aplicação desse método de investigação em Arranjos Produtivos Locais (APL). Neste ensaio teórico-metodológico, discutimos a interpelação conceitual do EC naturalista de Robert Stake em meio as suas possibilidades e limitações de uso, ilustradas por meio da análise do Arranjo Produtivo Local (APL) de Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC) e Economia Criativa do Estado de Pernambuco (Brasil), denominado Porto Digital. Ao migrar de uma abordagem fundamentada na lógica da explicação de perspectiva funcionalista de Yin (2005) para o tratamento de Stake (2005), essa visão de estudo de caso naturalista representa a oportunidade para o desenvolvimento de estudos interpretativos que possibilitam o incremento do conhecimento relacionado à ambientes de negócios cooperativos contemplando as novas TIC.

O artista norte-americano Robert Morris é conhecido sobretudo como escultor, mas sua obra abrange uma diversidade de meios, procedimentos e materiais, dentre os quais a dança. Morris esteve diretamente envolvido com grupos de dança entre o final da década de 1950 e meados da década de 1960, período em que participou do que foram talvez os dois mais importantes focos de pesquisa em dança, nos Estados Unidos, para a sua geração: as atividades que se desenvolveram em São Francisco, ao redor da professora e dançarina Ann Halprin, e as atividades que, em Nova York, resultaram da formação do grupo Judson Dance Theater. Nesse período, além de atuar como dançarino em trabalhos de outros artistas, Morris criou um pequeno mas significativo conjunto de trabalhos de dança. A tese toma esse conjunto como base para um estudo da obra do artista e procura vê- la, em grande parte, como desdobramento de experiências e questões surgidas no âmbito da dança, em diálogo com o seu concomitante envolvimento na pintura, no desenho e na escultura. Discutindo alguns dos pontos principais desse diálogo - como o reducionismo minimalista, os procedimentos de tarefa e instruções, a ênfase na temporalidade e na literalidade da ação corporal - e alguns de seus conceitos centrais - como estado de dança, forma vazia e anti-forma - , a tese se propõe a ampliar as possibilidades de análise e compreensão de um momento crucial não só para a formação e o curso subseqüente da obra de Morris, mas também para a constituição do campo ampliado da arte contemporânea.
The North American artist Robert Morris is known mostly as a sculptor, but his work encloses a diversity of means, procedures and materials among which dance. Morris was directly involved with dance groups between the end of the decade of 1950 until mid 1960, period in which he participated in what were maybe the two most important focuses of research in dance, in the United States, for his generation: the activities that were developed in San Francisco related to the professor and dancer Ann Halprin, and activities in New York City resulting from the formation of the group Judson Dance Theater. In this period, aside of acting as dancer in works from other artists, Morris created a small but significant set of dance works. The thesis considers this set as the basis for the study of the artist work and strives to see it, mainly, as a deployment of the experiences and questions arisen in the scope of dance, in dialogue with his concomitant involvement in painting, drawing and sculpture. Discussing some of the main points in this dialogue - as the minimalist reductionism, the procedures of tasks and instructions, the emphasis in the temporality and in the literality of the corporal action - and some of its central concepts - such as dance state, blank form and anti form - the thesis intends to extend the possibilities of analysis and comprehension of a crucial moment not only for the formation and the subsequent course of Morris work but also for the constitution of the expanded field of contemporary art.

Abstract:

We consider the problem of robustness, in particular that of robust stability. Such a problem is amenable to analysis by frequency domain techniques, and also using state space methods. Using some recent state space theory yielding the exact radius of the ball around a nominally stable system within which all additive perturbations retain stability, we show how control action may be implemented to increase the radius of this ball. We present further some material on how destabilizing perturbations may be constructed from solutions of Riccati equations, and how the above mentioned radii may be found with respect to an alternative norm to the one used above. Finally we give some remarks on the use of Lyapunov functions for systems.

Abstract:

The neo-Gramscian perspective, inspired by Robert Cox, has been in the forefront of developments in critical International Relations theory since the early-1980s. Derived from the historicist tradition in social science, including the work of Gramsci, Cox's method of historical structures - which comprise ideas. material capabilities, and institutions - challenged the positivism and trans-historical essentialisation of state power characteristic of traditional IR. Extending the method of historical structures to the understanding of the international system, Cox elaborated a triadic model of that system which comprised the mutual interactions between social forces engendered in production, forms of state, and world orders. This approach enabled Cox to develop a more sophisticated and comprehensive analysis of international change than that offered by the narrow state-centrism of traditionallR. Framing his approach within an interpretation of key ideas drawn from Gramsci's The Prison Notebooks, Cox created a space for the discussion of Marxist ideas in IR, previously largely resistant to Marxism. Cox, however, does not consider himself a Marxist and rejects important elements of Marxist theory. The critique of Cox and the neo-Gramscians that I develop in this thesis is based on a Marxist approach to social scientific explanation, and more specifically on the state capitalist perspective whose founder, Tony Cliff, conceived it as a return to classical Marxism, which the dominant versions of Marxism in the mid-twentieth century had, he argued, abandoned. The state capitalist perspective, developed as an attempt to understand the novel phenomenon of Stalinism in the USSR and its satellites, is mobilised throughout the thesis. Firstly against Cox's criticism that a focus on the fundamental relations of the mode of production leads to static and ahistorical analysis and, more widely, against his prioritisation of the role of ideas in shaping world orders. In particular, the Gramscian concept of hegemony, central to the neo-Gramscian perspective, IS criticised as providing an inadequate, and idealist, understanding of periods of relative social and political stability, which are explained instead by reference to the coercive aspects, broadly defined, of capitalism's dominant social relations. Coercion has been central to the imperialist structuring of the modern world system and, I argue, the concepts of imperialism and inter-imperialist rivalry retain their explanatory power even in what the neo-Gramscians refer to as the contemporary ·transnationalist' era

Abstract:

We present a framework for robust estimation of the configuration of an articulated robot using a large number of redundant proprioceptive sensors (encoders, gyros, accelerometers) distributed throughout the robot. Our method uses an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) to fuse the robot’s sensor measurements. The filter estimates the angle of each joint of the robot, enabling the accurate estimation of the robot’s kinematics even if not all modules report sensor readings. Additionally, a novel outlier detection method allows the the filter to be robust to corrupted accelerometer and gyro data.

Abstract:

Skin to skin transfer of cargo is a very challenging task. In a typical skin-to-skin transfer operation, the end-effector and the target are located on different ships and hence subjected to disturbances, which are not in phase. Hence, this transfer operation can be unstable unless the sea condition is properly accounted for. The cable robot should be designed for a versatile motion to track the target. NIST has proposed a dual-stage cable robot, each with six-degrees-of-freedom for this purpose. In this paper, the robust controller of the dual-stage cable robot with positive input constraints is developed which can assure robust tracking of the target in the presence of the disturbance due to the pitch, roll, and yaw motion of a ship, as well as a translation motion. Also, Pointwise optimization techniques are incorporated in order to generate feasible desired trajectories, which satisfy the input constraints. Simulations show the feasiblity of the proposed control method for the control of a dual-stage cable robot.

Abstract:

This paper explores the economic and political dimensions of post-Karimov state-building in Uzbekistan. It suggests that while Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s reform agenda has led to considerable economic reforms, the country’s political system, plagued with a myriad of authoritarian malpractices has largely remained untouched. In effect, Uzbekistan remains inherently authoritarian, with lack of a robust opposition and civil society. It concludes that the depth and sustainability of Uzbekistan’s economic reforms considerably depend on broader democratic reforms, including the fight against corruption and advancement of a vibrant civil society.

This SAE EDGE™ Research Report builds a comprehensive picture of the current state-of-the-art of human-robot applications, identifying key issues to unlock the technology’s potential.
