Abstract:
This study traces the career of Robert Francis Kelley and his influence on American-Russian Relations during the nonrecognition period (1917-1933). The focus of this examination is Kelley's role in formulating, implementing, and sustaining America's anti-communist policy developed and solidified during the 1920s and 1930s. Particular attention is given to the senate recognition hearing of 1924, Kelley's training of future diplomats (George Kennan, Charles Bohlen, et al.), and his contributions to the preparations leading to the United States' recognition of Russia in 1933. Using Kelley's papers and personal correspondence, this study shows the growth of a man and the evolution of a policy.

Abstract:
2019 - 2020
The aim of this work is to provide an overview of the Public History as an academic subject which tries to bring history and the historical method outside university classrooms. First, it discusses the essential stages of the institutionalization of Public History in United States in the 1970s. Then, it explores the various definitions which tried to give an identity to a discipline that is still in evolution, and analyses some of the main critiques moved against the idea of “doing history for” something or someone. Finally, it describes the spread of Public History worldwide and its recent arrival in Italy, where in 2016 the Italian Association of Public History was founded.

Murray, Craig. "Intellectuals in the Australian Press." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2005. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/16022/1/Craig_Murray_Thesis.pdf.

Abstract:
The notion of the 'public intellectual' has been a recurring discussion topic within sociology and the humanities for decades. Yet it has been largely neglected within media and cultural studies. Accordingly, few scholars have discussed in much depth how public intellectuals operate within the media and what functions this media role may facilitate. Intellectuals in the Australian Press is an exploration into this generally overlooked area of scholarship. It aims to provide three levels of insight into the topic. Firstly, the study looks closely at the appearance and the function of public intellectuals in the Australian press. It outlines how public intellectuals contribute to the newspapers and how newspapers contribute to Australian public intellectual life. Secondly, the thesis outlines and examines in detail three types of public intellectual in Australia. Specifically, it examines the journalist, the academic and the think tank researcher as types of intellectual who write regularly for Australia's newspapers. Thirdly, Intellectuals in the Australian Press delivers detailed intellectual biographies of three of Australia's most prominent press intellectuals, each of whom exemplifies one of these three categories. These commentators are The Australian's Paul Kelly, The Age's Robert Manne, and the Sydney Morning Herald's Gerard Henderson.

Kitaeff, Richard. "Communauté scientifique et ordre étatique : contribution à l'étude des rapports entre concept sociologique et théorie juridique : le cas français du droit de la recherche." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015AIXM1007.

Full text
Abstract:
Understood as a legal discipline, the right of research, relates to the regulation of scientific research between the opposite requirements of science and law. So we're talking through this legal construction of the object : "science", through the "law of research" to understand the patterns of emergence and functions - the development and regulation - of such a right being both caretaker and opponent to the learned institutions. The value and usefulness of the right of the research might be to show, through a legal analysis of scientific behavior, how does the right being understood as a technique works. Does the legal theory can understand a sociological object ? To answer to this, the concept of "scientific community", well known in sociology of science (see especially Robert K. Merton and the "normative structure" of science), will be analyzed according to the theory of the legal system of the Italian constitutional lawyer Santi Romano, in order to better understand the definition of the concept of the legal order.Eventually, it appears that the regulation operated by the state legal order upsets the independence of science, especially the academia sphere and is not always being able to ensure protection where the state should precisely safeguard and promote the quest for knowing. Is it therefore possible to devote a science released from his heteronomy versus the state ? This is the whole final proposal for the establishment of an authentic legal status for the Researcher and, especially, the resolution of scientific disputes by some sort of scientific Labour Court lessons

Dutcher, Katherine M. ""The Earth Nourishing Itself": Bodies and Theology in American Food Production Systems." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2009. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/pomona_theses/36.

Full text
Abstract:
The industrial food production system is a head-on collision of ecology, morality, and human health, and their respective bodies of earth, animal and human. This thesis is an attempt to grapple with that damage from a theological perspective. What would it mean for a theology to answer to the degradation of American soil that sustains nothing but oil-drenched monoculture? to the horrifying conditions under which we as a nation raise, feed, and slaughter the animals for our consumption? to the dizzying array of food-related diseases that now affect our country in staggering frequency, particularly among lower socioeconomic classes? And what would that theology look like in the real world? The first chapter of this thesis surveys the damage done to earth, animal and human bodies by the industrial food system. A discussion of corn, the backbone of the entire system, and its effects on the land leads into a discussion of corn-fed animals and the conditions under which they live. In the final section, some of the health effects directly traceable to eating industrial food are overviewed. The second chapter highlights and examines three groups of people who, often for theological reasons, are growing food in alternative ways: ways that not only do not harm bodies, but sustain them and help them to thrive. The third chapter is a set of theological reflections on the first two, in which I try to pin down some essential theological differences between the first two chapters, and bring in theologians who are helpful in this enterprise. The four theological points I discuss are taking bodies seriously, a panentheistic approach to the world, interrelatedness and the presence of complexity, and mutuality and relational power.

Stasko, Carly. "A Pedagogy of Holistic Media Literacy: Reflections on Culture Jamming as Transformative Learning and Healing." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/18109.

Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative study uses narrative inquiry (Connelly & Clandinin, 1988, 1990, 2001) and self-study to investigate ways to further understand and facilitate the integration of holistic philosophies of education with media literacy pedagogies. As founder and director of the Youth Media Literacy Project and a self-titled Imagitator (one who agitates imagination), I have spent over 10 years teaching media literacy in various high schools, universities, and community centres across North America. This study will focus on my own personal practical knowledge (Connelly & Clandinin, 1982) as a culture jammer, educator and cancer survivor to illustrate my original vision of a ‘holistic media literacy pedagogy’. This research reflects on the emergence and impact of holistic media literacy in my personal and professional life and also draws from relevant interdisciplinary literature to challenge and synthesize current insights and theories of media literacy, holistic education and culture jamming.
