Abstract:
Scale matters. When conducting research and writing, scholars upscale and downscale. So do the subjects of their work - we scale, they scale. Although scaling is an integrant part of research, we rarely reflect on scaling as a practice and what happens when we engage with it in scholarly work. The contributors aim to change this: they explore the pitfalls and potentials of scaling in an interdisciplinary dialogue. The volume brings together scholars from diverse fields, working on different geographical areas and time periods, to engage with scale-conscious questions regarding human sociality, culture, and evolution. With contributions by Nurit Bird-David, Robert L. Kelly, Charlotte Damm, Andreas Maier, Brian Codding, Elspeth Ready, Bram Tucker, Graeme Warren and others.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the song “Rock Island Lime”, which was performed by Robert Kelly Pace, a twenty-one-year-old convict, along with a group of inmates at Cummins Camp One, a unit of the Arkansas penal system. Their performance involved a closely patterned call-and-response, their voices dispersed in three- and sometimes four-part harmony. Between the choruses one of them imitated a train whistle. “Rock Island Line” began its journey in Little Rock, Arkansas, at the repair shops of the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad. Based on a traditional form and arising within a commercial setting, the song soon moved beyond this work site making new stops, shifting its contents, and streamlining its load. It migrated from a gospel quartet that the Arkansas prisoners performed to a rhythmic fable that Huddie Ledbetter created as he traveled with John Lomax as chauffeur, auto mechanic, and musical demonstrator. Eventually the song reached an incalculable number of players, singers, and listeners via skiffle, rock and roll, country, pop, and the folksong revival.

Morrison, Benedict. Complicating Articulation in Art Cinema. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780192894069.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Complicating Articulation in Art Cinema argues that art cinema, unlike classical film, draws attention to its disjointed, multi-parted form, but that criticism has too frequently sought to explain this complexity away by stitching the parts together in totalizing readings. This stitching together has often relied on the assumption that complicated character explains articulated form and that the solution to art cinema’s puzzles lies in interpreting each film as the expression of a focalizing character’s internal disturbance. This book challenges this assumption. It argues that the attempt to explain formal complexity through this character-centric approach reduces formal achievements and enigmatic characters to inadequate approximations of one another. Reference to character cannot fully tame unschematic and unpredictable combinations of—and collisions between—contradictory levels of narration, clashing styles, discontinuously edited shots, jarring allusions, dislocated genre signifiers, and intermedial elements. Through close analyses of films by Roberto Rossellini, Robert Bresson, Luis Buñuel, Terence Davies, Peter Greenaway, and Kelly Reichardt, Complicating Articulation in Art Cinema offers an ethics of criticism that suggests that the politics of art cinema’s eccentric form are limited by character-centred readings. Each of the featured films presents inarticulate or muted characters, whose emotional and intellectual lives are unknowable, further complicating the relationship between character and form. This book argues that, by acknowledging this resistance to interpretation, critics can think in new ways about art cinema’s interrogation of the possibilities of knowledge.

Frevel, Bernhard, and Thomas Heinicke, eds. Managing Corona. Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5771/9783748909323.

Full text
Abstract:
As a result of the Corona pandemic, far-reaching regulations and laws intervened in the shaping of people's lives, the economy and social life in 2020. A variety of legal, economic and sociological questions arise concerning the political-administrative crisis management of the Corona crisis. These concern, for example, fundamental aspects of the separation of powers and legal control by means of ordinances, or questions of public procurement law concerning the procurement of protected goods. In this work, researchers from the University of Police and Public Administration NRW analyze the corona management of the first months of the pandemic in Germany from an administrative science perspective. With contributions by Robert Arnold, Robert Becker, Susanne Benöhr-Laqueur, Felix Bode, Kerstin Brixius, Christian Endreß, Cornelia Fischer, Anne Frankewitsch, Bettina Franzke, Bernhard Frevel, Christoph Görisch, Stefanie Haumer, Thomas Heinicke, Judith Heße-Husain, Uta Hildebrandt, Frank Hofmann, Stefan Hollenberg, Emanuel John, Lutz C. Fraleigh, Sondra, ed. Dance Maps. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252039409.003.0013.

Full text
Abstract:
This section discusses Dance Maps, user-friendly maps that present simple structures for use as a guide for dance experiences. Designed for those who want to claim the dancer within, from the professional dancer to the novice, Dance Maps are performance templates not only for the studio but also for natural and architected environments. They are intended to help spark creative uses of transformational dance somatics. Several authors of this book provide examples, including a version of “Be a Stone” and “Be Spinach and Stone Butoh” mapped by Sondra Fraleigh; Back-to-Back exploration for Catherine Schaeffer’s “Motional Baggage”; Ecodances mapped by Alison East; a memory-based transformational Dance Map mapped by Kelly Ferris Lester; and a movement meditation mapped by Robert Bingham. These examples show how teachers of dance in somatic contexts can engage in community building through exploration of choreographic and improvisational structures based on Dance Maps.
